What are best ways to free up space?

I am still having problems in iDVD. I have created a movie in Final Cut Express HD. I am able to create a DVD in iDVD. I have burned a copy of half of my movie. Ever since I burned this I am getting messages saying "not enough free disk space." I realize that I need more space and I have about 400 Gig's free in a Lacie external hard drive. I was told to free up space by moving my start up drive to the Lacie. Or possibly just moving other things there. I am not sure what to move to my external hard drive or how to do that. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate them. thanks
Zach Schuler

I keep my operating system on one drive and my media on other drives. So, how large is your boot drive and how much free space is currently on it? Next, find the files in your home directory (this will be non-system files) and start to move them to the LaCie drive. The problem will be with iLife files: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and so on, They will continue to look for your media in the "default" location. You can change this, here is one example:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
Once you have your media copied (just drag & drop) and "re-connected" you can delete it off the boot drive thereby freeing up all that space.

I can't update my iphone with the 6.0 because I don't have enough memory. Whats the best way to free up space? I have already deleted some pictures and music..

Delete whatever files you don't need anymore and transfer data to an external hard drive. You can download and run OmniDiskSweeper. This application shows you all the files on your harddrive and what files are taking up the most space, just open the application and run it on your hardrive.

  • Privacy Question: What are Best Ways to Protect My Literary Pseudonym?

    Hey Everyone,
I am an author embarking on the long process of reinventing myself--changing from a crime writer to a "literary writer"--for reasons that are too boring and stupid to explain. The nature of publishing these days is such that I will have to create a pseudonym, and submit my work as if I'm a total unknown--even at the agent level because, trust me, if a publisher asks an agent for my real identity the agent will give it. Therefore, it's crucial to me that no tech savvy assistant can simply check my IP address and go--"Hey, it's old so-and-so!" I don't want to use a "front." I could go through a lawyer, but that would be cumbersome and expensive.
I will be getting a separate "burner" phone for this venture, and of course use a P.O. Box rather than my home address. I still have to figure out the best way of getting a separate tax ID that won't be automatically linked to me--whether by a DBA or a corporate subsid.
I'm not worried about security of my actual computer.
    My initial questions are:
Will I be able to send emails from my home network and still remain pseudonymous?
Will I have to use an entirely separate computer for Mr. Pseudonym?
Will Tor be of any use here? (I tried it out and found it slowed my MacBook to a crawl.)
Can you recommend a forum where I might get expert advice on this? (The advice available from writers' orgs assumes your agent will know who you are--not what I need.)
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

The new plastics really don't have the discoloration problem, so you don't actually need palm rest protection. Any dirt can be taken care of with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I use only a silicone keyboard cover by Carapace to protect my macbook. I type so much that the letters often wear off my keys, and this will prevent that, as well as dust entering through the keyboard or, God forbid, any spilled liquid. The macbook heat vents are in the back, so my macbook does not overheat with the keyboard cover in place.

  • Best way to free disk space/memory?

Need to free up disk space/memory in order to back-up my iPhone 4 before switching to the iPhone 6. More PC than Mac, where do I look, and what is safe to delete from my computer? I don't know what is using all the space.

    Hi ..

Just so you are aware, your Mac must be running v10.6.8 or later to backup an iPhone 4 and syncing an iPhone 6 > Apple - iPhone 6 - Technical Specifications

  • Best Way to Free Up Space

I have an external hard drive with several hundred gigs available, and my computer itself only has 1 or 2. I want to open up some space but I don't know what files I should move. I still want to be able to use it without the hard drive, so like nothing that is essential for running my computer.
    Thanks

    Cornelius,
"Fools rush in..." something this fool is frequently guilty of to be sure.
My initial thought here was to just clarify the circumstances under which Apple would keep the hard drive, and then I got off on a tangent, as I am often prone to do, wanting to give the OP another option to consider.
My feeling is with a user replaceable item, the genius bar would replace the hard drive for no charge, just as it would install RAM for someone who wasn't comfortable doing it himself or herself. The only charge would be for the hard drive itself. Under these circumstances, I don't think there would be any reason for Apple to keep the old hard drive. The genius could also format the new drive and clone the old one to it.
One thing I'm also wondering--would the OP have enough room now to download something like Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper and see what is really eating up the space?
    http://www.derlien.com/
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
It's conceivable that there might be a big file of U-Tube videos or something like that which could safely be transferred to the external and free up a significant amount of space. Of course the genius could also see what is taking up the space and would be able to identify what is safe to move to the external.
My sense of it is that the OP is feeling a bit overwhelmed at this point, so getting help at the Apple Store as you suggested may be the best thing to do.

  • Whats the best way to transfer all my pic and vid files from Mac Air to back up drive to free up space on hard disk?

whats the best way to transfer all my pic and vid files from Mac Air to back up drive to free up space on hard disk?

Get a third drive if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, set it not to exclude that drive, and drag the files to it. If you're moving an iTunes or iPhoto library, launch the application with the Option key held down and choose the moved library.

  • What is the best way to free up memory easily?

what is the best way to free up memory easily? I have a fairly typical makeup of iTunes music, iMovie, iPhoto files, which is best to attack?
    Thanks

If you're talking Hard Drive space, you'll want to start just by deleting the largest of files. Try removing movies first, as they're usually in the Gigs of data, since they contain video and audio. If you're storing original photos those can be as large as 8mb/each photo, and if you've taken hundreds, they add up quickly. Try saving them as smaller sizes, or deleting unwanted photos, and lastly, songs do take up space, but depending on the quality, duration and file type will be anywhere from 30kb to 10mb.
Try removing some unneccesary applications too! Please let me know if I solved your question by using the buttons below, or reply to this thread if you need additional assistance.

Import photos to your computer, then delete the copies that reside on the phone. Also remove apps you no longer use.

How do I clean up mail in my icloud?  I have already deleted old mail (from all my e-mail accounts) on all devices, and emptied the junk & deleted files, but it still shows that I am at max on my icloud. What do I do to free up space? (photos & apps do not take up that much room).  When I go to manage storage on any device & it will display how much room each program or app is using, it still shows that my e-mail is taking up the most room.  Is there a way to actually log on to the icloud server to manage what it stored there?  If so, how do I do it?  Also, on a related subject,  why does my mail not sync accross all devices?   ie. when I delete an email on one device, why do I still see it on all my other devices?  How can I change this?
I have an iphone5, ipad2, ipod 4th gen, ipod 3rd gen, all running on my same apple id - but I have a PC not a Mac home computer - is this part of the problem?  Looking to upgrade to a Mac sometime this year...

I do have the Time Capsule and spoke to Apple Care here in Sydney about it yesterday.  They told me my mail is not backed up there unless I create a special folder. I just tried ringing them again but Apple Care is closed today...
Mail is backed up automatically. If you make backups automatically, open Mail application and then, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities). You will access to the Time Machine interface, and you will be able to see all your mails of all the backups you have, and you will be able to restore them. It means that your mails are backed up onto the Time Capsule

  • I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?

I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?  I get an "X" when trying to copy to the "automatically add to itunes" folder on the 2nd computer.

ok... so i i just made sure all my music is all together in 1 folder and i am going to trash my old music folder that is in the itunes folder... and follow your directions - let itunes start w/new library and bring my music in. Well, last little hurdle/question. I noticed that the place where my itunes library is - on an external drive doesnt have much space left on it. The place where i gathered all my music together in order to start fresh - is a different external drive and has LOTS of free space on it.
SO... i now would like to just keep all that freshly compiled clean music right where it is but in advanced preferences I want to point to that new folder on the drive that has so much more space. So... should i delete the old music then go into itunes with a blank library and change the folder in preferences - quit and go back in and then follow your steps to loading my music? If i change the setting of where itunes looks for the music - that doesn't wipe out the old stuff... it just mixes it all up together right? I dont want that!!
i promise this is the last question - i would love to fix this problem tonight and just be DONE!
Thanks in advance for your patience and knowledge!!

  • Just bought macbook air; had macbook macbook with Tiger software. What is best way to upload photos to icloud on old computer without upgrading it's software? thanks.

just bought a macbook air upgrading from old macbook with Tiger software; what is best way to take photos from old backbook to icloud so I can see them or download on the new air; Have an external harddrive backup. photo library is too large to transfer directly.thanks.

Memory size has nothing to do with it. I can open my 60GB iPhoto library with only 8GB RAM. Perhaps you have an incompatible version of iPhoto under Tiger with iPhoto under ML.
As to downloading different photos from iCloud, you would do the same if you ...
    * open iPhoto under Tiger
    * dump the photos individually in to a folder on your external hard drive
    * shut down everything on the old MacBook
    * connect the external hard drive to new MacBook
    * open iPhoto on new MacBook
    * import the photos in the folder on the external hard drive directly in to the new iPhoto
IOW, you need not use iCloud (even if you could, which you cannot) to swap photos as you propose.
If you are at a loss for space on your external hard drive for whatever reason (perhaps that external hard drive is a full Time Machine partition), I recommend that you buy another external hard drive just for your photos.

  • One headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

one headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

First of all, I'd recomend resetting the iPod. Do this by pressing the 'Menu' and 'Center" buttons for 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears.
If this doesn't work, then it sounds like a hardware fault.
To identify the issue, if you have one, try plugging the iPod into a speaker through the dock. If this works, then the issue is with the headphone jack. If not then the logic board is dead.  If the iPod is less than a year old, then it can be repaired by Apple for free. Just book an appointment for the Genius bar.
If not then, you could see about sending it to an iPod Repair Company, such as my own. A replacement headphone jack would cost £30.00 in the UK, including next day delivery. Other companies you could try would beUKiPodRepairs, but we guarantee to beat any quote that you get.
    Hope that this helps,

  • Wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

I need to wipe my hard drive clean except for the OS whats the best way?

From Kappy (note: with this method, you will need to update to the present OS version using the appropriate Combo Update from Apple Downloads.)
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities (Installer menu if using Panther or Jaguar) menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • What are the ways in data transfer

    Hi Experts,
What are the ways to transfer data from SAP R/3 to SAP BW and SAP BW to SAP APO DP?
    Can anyone help me please.
    Regards
    Suvi

    Hello,
I can only help on part of your questions, since I'm not familar with R/3 data uploading ...
If you want to download data from BW infocube to APO DP:
1)For CVCs, you can just use /sapapo/mc62, input POS name, click 'Create Characteristic Combinations'.
Then select an option except 'Create manually'.
In the 'Data Source' area, select load data from 'InfoProvider'.
Then you can load CVCs from infocube to APO system for generation.
2)For transactional data (key figure values), you can use /sapapo/tscube.
Just fill in the source cube's name, version, and tagert planning area's name, version.
Key figure assignment and characteristic assignment are also necessary.
Specify other options as to your requirement, and you can download transactional data from BW to DP.
    Best Regards,
    Ada

  • I want to connect a Mac mini to a Samsung 40", Whats the best way to do this?

I want to connect a Mac mini to a Samsung 40" LED tv to use as the monitor, whats the best way of doing this?

Understand that there is one HDMI port on your TV that is specifically designated for PC connectivity. The order that the TV or Mini are powered on may determine your results. For your specific TV model, check buyer reviews on Amazon or elsewhere that can include optimum TV/Computer settings adjustment for improved viewing results.
