What are Drivers (for XP OS) ?

Hello
I have heard that drivers are needed for the XP OS after it is installed?
Could someone tell me what their role is?
And how do i keep about knowing which driver/s to download?
Thanks

Hi - and welcome to the forums,
I don't want to assume you know a lot about computers, so pardon me for some overly simplistic answers to your inquiry.
Simply stated, you absolutely need those drivers! *Drivers are software bits and pieces which enable hardware to be recognized by the OS.* Without the proper drivers (think of them as translators) hardware devices such as RAM chips, processors, sound components, keyboards, video cards and displays, printers, etc. would not know what to do - nor - would the operating system (OS) know those hardware devices existed.
When installing BootCamp within the Mac OS enviro, BC contains all of the necessary drivers which allow Windows (XP or Vista) to see the Mac's native hardware devices. Using again the analogy of a translator - all of these devices and hardware parts must speak a common language - literally - such that they function properly together and with the machine's operating system.
As for knowing what to do during installation, if you stick with the standard Apple recommended order of BootCamp install business, you should be fine. Take the usual precautions when installing such system-invasive software:
1. BACK-UP existing files
2. Be certain your existing system is up-to-date with it's own software updates
3. Have all necessary install discs at hand
4. Consider putting the BootCamp partition on it's own harddrive. If you don't have that luxury, partition* your existing harddrive to accommodate the BootCamp XP environment.
*Be advised that partitioning your existing drive means wiping-off all of it's existing contents/data - hence the recommendation to do this on a new, blank, clean drive.
5. Be patient and don't panic - stick to the known rules and it will go smoothly.
One last piece of advice to you, these forums are an excellent source for help, advice, etc. Try to read through some posts regarding BootCamp, installing XP, etc. - merely as a source of general knowledge and confidence-building know-how.
Best of luck,
mike p

Do you happen to have an Android?  If so and depending on what version there is a great data usage analyse tool built-in.  See if you can go to Settings -> Data Usage  from there you can pick a current or previous billing cycle and then use the vertical sliders to select a date range and it will filter the usage data per app to show you exactly what app(s) were using data during that time frame.

  • Service/Database Accounts - NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER & NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT - what are they for?

    Hi Guys,
I’ve done a fair amount of research for this question but just cannot seem to find the answer to my question in simple, non-DBA, terms.
    Server 2008 R2
    SQL 2008 R2
There are 2 users in the system database logins (NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER, NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT) … what are they for? It appears that they
are accounts to run the corresponding Windows services but yet they cannot be selected from the list of available built-in accounts, local accounts or domain accounts.
Also, I am using a couple of domain user accounts to run the services, do I need to add them to the database? I changed the service accounts from NETWORK
SERVICE to the domain user accounts using the SQL Configuration Manger which is supposed to take care of managing the user group membership and registry changes but the domain accounts are not in the database …. The services appear to be running fine.
    Thanks

    In basic terms:
    As you say, in the SQL Server Database Engine there are two logins;
NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. The Database Engine runs in Windows as a Windows service named
MSSQLSERVER. The NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER login is used by the service to connect to the Database Engine. Basically, this is how it connects to itself. The SQL Server Agent runs as a Windows service named
    NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. The NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT
login is how the Windows process that is SQL Server Agent connects to the Database Engine to read the
msdb database to find out what it should do; and then do it. Both of these logins are members of the
sysadmin fixed server role, so they can do anything in the Database Engine. And they need to stay that way.
No, they can't be selected in the list of available built-in accounts, local accounts or domain accounts. This is because they are services, not accounts. They have a security identifier (SID) in Windows,
but Windows knows they aren't real users. Windows can authenticate them, but they don't have passwords that any human can use. If you run
lusrmgr.msc and look at the groups, you will see groups like
    SQLServerMSSQLUser$computername$MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER
is a member of the group.
As for the account that you used to run the services, this is complicated and has changed from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 and now again in SQL Server Code Named 'Denali'. The short answer is that
the account you specify will be used when a process tries to reach outside of the current Windows environment. But within the computer, there is a mix of authorization granted to the domain user, the service, and the Windows group
    SQLServerMSSQLUser$computername$MSSQLSERVER.
The good news is that SQL Server Configuration Manager figures out all the stuff you need when you change the accounts. If you are a glutton for punishment, you can get an idea for how complicated this
is by looking at the Denali documentation where I have tried to provide more specific information. (Note this is not the same as SQL Server 2008.) You can see it at:

  • What are attributes for a row?

What are attributes for a row?
Are these the column names associated with the row?

Attribute is the object-oriented term for an object's data holders. So attributes are analogous to columns in a table.
Of course, attribute also has a couple of non-OO meanings. So the answer to your question really depends upon context.

If you want a database username/password for every user that runs a report, you need to include un/pw in the command.
An option that you see quite often is that Reports use a general database user to run any report. In that case you can include the un/pw of this special user in the Key Map File:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17904_01/bi.1111/b32121/pbr_run013.htm#RSPUB23557
Of course, in that case you need an application in front of the call to the report to check if the user is allowed to run the report. This is how most web applications work anyway: there is one database user, and application users are maintained in the application itself.
Or you can use single sign on:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24269_01/doc.11120/e24479/pbr_sso002.htm#RSPUB23512

  • What are rule for adding names to photos?

what are rule for adding names to photos in iphoto?

Since your profile indicates you have a Mac, I am guessing you are asking how to add a face name using iPhoto on your Mac.
You would open the photo in iPhoto, click "Info" on the bottom, and then the "Faces" tab on the right.
Once you have added the face name in iPhoto on your Mac, once you sync the photo to your iPhone, the name will appear there as well.

  • What are solutions for a way-too-big database?

    Hi guys!
I'm a software developer and not very good in database designing. One day, I was asked something like this :
"For example, there is a company with a web application. One day, the database for that application is way too big, caused performance issues and others, what is the solution for that application database?"
At first, I thought that was about using multiple database with single app. But I don't know if I was right.
I want to ask that what are the solutions? If it's "multiple database" then what should I do? Using two connection to 2 database simutaneously?
    I appreciate any replies. Thanks!

Thanks Lubiez Jean-Val... for your links.
I've got some more advices like :
    - "transferring workload to another database using different techniques to copy the data from original db"
    - "redesign of the database"
So that means we use 2 different databases?Sometimes it is deemed desirable to keep only fairly recent data on the OLTP database, where the normal transaction activity happens, and replicate the data to another database that also contains historical data. This second database is used for heavy reporting tasks.
And "redesign"?As in, design it from scratch and do it right this time. Make sure all data relations are properly defined to Third Normal Form; make sure all data is typed properly (use DATE columns for dates, NUMBER columns for numbers, etc); make sure you have designed effective indexing; make sure you use the capabilities of the rdbms and do NOT just use it as a data dump.
    See http://www.amazon.com/Effective-Oracle-Design-Osborne-ORACLE/dp/0072230657/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301257486&sr=1-3
are they really good solutions?Like most everything else, "It depends"
It depends on if the proposed solutions are implemented properly and address the root problem. The root problem (or even perceived problem) hasn't yet been defined. You've just assumed that at some undefined point the database becomes "way-too-big" and will cause some sort of problem.
It's assumed that we don't have or can't use partitioning.
And why is that assumed? Yes, you have to have a version of Oracle that supports it, and it is an extra cost license. But like everything else, you and your management have to do a hard-nosed cost/benefit analysis. You may think you can't afford the cost of implementing partitioning, but it may be that you can't afford the expenses derived from NOT implementing it. I don't know what the case is for you, but you and your management should consider the factors instead of just rejecting in out of hand.

  • Why are drivers for older hp scanners not available?

I have an older HP scanner (5730c) that works perfectly [and I need it and use it all the time].  Now with the upgrade to Lion, it does not work with my Mac.  HP does not have a fix (e.g. new driver) for this problem.
Lucky me - HP is going down the tubes and I wont have to even consider buying another of their products!
HOWever: Auto manufacturers are required, by law, to maintain a supply of parts/components on their products for years after the model has been discontinued.
WHY does the computer bsns not have to do the same thing?  Some products that I have had in the past continued to work just fine long after the product/line has been "improved".  BUT parts and software were no longer available!
Is it not time that this problem is FIXED?  Not everyone has deep pockets to replace perfectly good products just to keep the industry happy.
Does ANYone know of a fix for my scanner??????

HP are hopeless at updating drivers for OSx.
I have a scanjet 3570 that works under windows, but has not worked under OSX since 10.4.11
As for printer at least Apple do write CUPS drivers for many devices including HP printers.
Halfcrak - There is a differing protocol for driver support in OSx as Apple do try to build in many MORE simple support drivers as standard and for a variety of gadgets, rather than relying on venders in the windows world.
This does lead to more reliable plug and play however may be at the expense of special features/functions offered by venders under Windows.
Suffice to say OSx still needs drivers to interface with printers. monitors, scanners USB devices etc.......
As for ios and Airprint compatible printers this assumes the drivers actually remain on the printer and communicating over email to send the print command.

  • What are requirements for Installation of Wireless Broadband

I am getting wireless broadband installed next week and wanted to know what network card I should purchase and how to install? Where can I go to find the info. Also do most towers already ahve a version installed?
    Thanks

    First, welcome to the discussions.
    You are getting Broadband Installed.
Wireless is determined by having a Wireless Router.
Most Internet Service Provider don't furnish a Wireless Router you will have to go out and purchase it seperatly.
Your Tower does have an Ethernet Card and will allow for direct plug in that will enable you to have the faster speed that you are after.
Normally Wireless connections are used for portables like laptops that are mobile and can be readly moved from one location to another with a minimum of problems.
It is not really necessary for you if you are working from a tower. You will not be moving your computer from room to room like with a LapTop.
If you decide however to make your system Wireless you only need purchase a Wireless Router to Ethernet Cable to your Internet Service Providers Modem.

Or, the CC needs to report a small balance each month. Current scores: July 7, 2015EQ: 622,   TU: 659,  EX:637I would also ask how long you have had each card? I would also suggest making a small purchase with the cards pretty much every month or at least every other month to show that you are 'interested' in their cards. And of course, keeping an eye towards getting the QuickSilver to be unsecured, and if you use it for expenses, it should be that way in time. For the unsecured cards, you could check to see if they have a CLI request button online, or maybe a chat option to ask for an increase.  I believe Cap1 is once every 6 months.  I do not have any experience or knowledge about asking for a CLI on a secured card, not sure if that's possible or not. Other than that, keep everything paid on time and your scores will rise over time, as mentioned. hth  ETA:  The benefit to getting larger CLIs is that it will help your utilization and that as you get larger CLIs, it will promote or suggest that other CCCs also offer you a larger CLI or in the case of a new card, a larger SL.  It will also happen as your scores increase. Also, Jackielee explained everything very well and I didnt mean to overwrite anything, just to supplement it.

  • K9N Neo-F v.3: what RAID drivers for the floppy?

I downloaded the drivers that are suppose to be for the floppy install during the windows XP setup (using f6).  I found these by using the MSI website and searching for drivers for my motherboard model.  It specifically says they are raid drivers for floppy disk.  After unzipping this file, it creates a main folder called WinXP.  There are two subfolders inside that called "sata_ide" and "sataraid".
now, from my experience windows has to see these drivers on the root of A:\ during installation.  Righ off the bat, I can tell this zip file is improperly formated to be used with a floppy for windows XP installation.  The files within the two subfolders are named the same, so you cant just place all of these drivers on the root drive without overwriting them.
So, I made 3 floppies.  On one floppy I followed the directions given on the site where I downloaded the zip file:  Unzip the file and copy all files to the floppy.  This meant sub folders and all.  I created another floppy with ONLY the sataraid drivers directly in the root of A:.  I created a third with only the sata_ide drivers directly on the root of A:
I created my striped array using 2 WD SATA II drives.  Status is healthy.  Upon installing windows, I hit f6 and inserted my floppy when prompted.  None of the floppies I created worked.  I even went the extra step and formatted and created partitions on each drive.  Still no dice.
I need to know EXACTLY how to create the driver disk for this motherboard.  Links to the drivers or any extra information is greatly appreciated.  Anyone with experience in this realm on this particular motherboard, Id like to hear from you.
Oddly enough, I was able to build a RAID/0 config using an LSI PCI Raid controller and two Ultra 320 SCSI Seagate Cheetahs.  Something I was told prior to that this motherboard would not be able to do.  Now here I am struggling using drivers given to me directly from MSI with HDD's the motherboard completely supports

  • Just ordered a T400s what about drivers for win7

Hi, Just ordered a T400s it will come with Vista business english 3 questions: i think i will upgrade with win 7 home premium (either dutch or english) and because the machine has 4GB of Ram i think it'l be wise to use 64 bit?? (use photoshop cs4, windows office, internet) Can i buy an upgrade and do a clean and fresh install? Are the new software and drivers for this machine with win 7 available yet?

If you just bought the Vista machine it is probably eligible for the Windows 7 Upgrade Program.
Yes I would recommend 64-bit to make use of all of your 4GB RAM. If you start with 32-bit VIsta, you must do a clean install. If you start from 64-bit Vista, you can do an upgrade or clean install, your choice.
Released Windows 7 drivers are already starting to appear on the support pages. The official schedule is "on or about October 22nd". Beta drivers have been available for a while.
