What are hidden home and net network drives?

I have 2 icons on my desktop called net and home, both have a size of zero both are partially greyed out. They stay on the desktop regardless of whether or not I'm actually connected to a network. I found them using tinkertool and setting 'show hidden and system files' and going to finder preferences and selecting 'connected servers'. I can't disconnect from them. I was wondering what they are for.

Turn off the display of hidden files/folders and they should disappear from view. They are used by the OS, not the user.

  • Hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 / Lion Problem

Updated to Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion and got this "problem":
The hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 (unlike in 10.6 Snow Leopard).
Normally these network drives are hidden (in Finder and other Apps) - but Adobe Bridge CS5 is showing them, despite "show hidden files" is unchecked in Adobe Bridge.
Not a dramatic "bug", but it also shouldn't be a big problem for Adobe Bridge engineers to solve this. My first question to the Adobe Support was answered like: "we don't know what Apple did change, so we cannot do anything". Hmmm, are you serious?
I tried to resolve that problem by myself but failed. So, if an Adobe engineer is reading this post: perhaps Adobe Bridge is ignoring the automounter master map (that was my approach to resolve it):
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master                    # Use directory service
    /net           -hosts                 -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home                                        auto_home       -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers               -fstab
    /-                              -static
You cannot do anything to these folders, so it is not a serious issue, but, I mean, did someone at Adobe check compatibiliy with 10.7 and ignored this issue? If so, are there an other issues ignored?
But I guess, the compatibilty update for Bridge CS5 for Lion is Bridge CS6 - to be fair: I also have to say, that in general Bridge is running okay on Mac OS X 10.7.2 (but could be better, as always;)

    Hi Curt Y,
thanks for your answer! Yes you' re right, I forgot to mention that ... before I posted here, I sent a bug report via the Apple Bug Report webpage about the issue ... of course, here are 2 parties involved.
I had a similiar problem once and I got a meesage back from Apple: "that it is a 3rd party problem, sorry" (it was about color management).
I am just a user and I often feel very strange about Apple's (topsecret) communication behaviour ... Whatever, what do I know about software engineering? - Right.
Maybe someone on this forum has an idea, because I'm afraid, thus it is not a serious bug, no one would take care about it in the next time (during my research I found an older post here on the forum about the same problem ...).
    thanks for help in advance,

"Memory" in this case means RAM, the working space for the processor in the iPad. It is different from storage space, the latter being what is referred to by the "32GB", "64GB" etc. specification.

  • How can I hide the "home" and "net" volumes in mountain lion

I have a MacBook Pro that I updated to Mt. Lion.  The home and net volumes are now visible in the Finder at the root level.  They contain 0 bytes of data.  How can I make them invisible?

Sometimes it takes me a while to remember this stuff. The issue is that these invisible folders are actually symlinks and not real folders. They behave differently. Here's something that used to work and may still:
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder:
    cd /
    nano .hidden
Press RETURN after each line. In the editor listing enter, one line each, home and net. CTRL+O to save the file. Now log out and log back in or restart. The files should be invisible.
Beyond this requires downloading the XTools in order to use one developer tool not included with OS X.

  • Windows 8.1 Photos app doesn't display photos from Home Server V1 network drive

I have my photos stored on a Home Server V1 network drive (\\homeserver\photos) and I have added the drive to the Pictures library. When I open the library in desktop Explorer I can see all the photos
and my Photos live tile shows photos from the network drive. When I open the Photos app I can see all the folders. However, when I open a folder I get the message 'There are no files or folders in this view.'
    Any help is appreciated.
I am running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Adding another voice to this - I hit exactly the same issue myself yesterday.  I haven't got the device with me now, but as the original poster says:
I have \\server\photos mapped to my p:\ drive in Windows 8.1, and this is in my pictures library.
The p:\ drive has many (100s) subfolders, which I can browse using Windows explorer and desktop apps like Picasa.
When I start the "photos" app, I see all my folders (each with a thumbnail picture), but when I click into a folder I just get the "There are no files or folders in this view".
It's probably worth saying that as this is Home Server v1, I had a bit of fun and games to get permissions right to access the share:
I log into Windows 8.1 (on a Surface Pro 3) using my Microsoft account
I've mapped the home server photo drive to "P:\" on my SP3; when I did this I provided the admin user ID and password for the home server and told windows to remember the credentials.
I added p:\ to my pictures library in Windows 8.1 on the SP3.
FWIW - I use a similar mechanism to add music from my home server to my music library, but the XBox Music app seems to be able to see individual tracks OK.
    Any ideas?

  • What are the uploads and downloads speeds

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?

what are the upload and download speeds of the time capsule?
If you are asking about Internet download and upload speeds, this is limited by your service plan with your Internet provider.
It might be something like 10 Mbps download and 2 Mpbs upload, for example. That's because on most home plans, the download speeds are typically much faster than the upload speeds....unless you opt for a business type connection at significantly higher cost.
The Time Capsule is capable of much faster speeds than your service provider can ever deliver, so the bottleneck on your network will always be the Internet connection...not the Time Capsule.

  • Weird home and net devices

I recently have these two new devices they are located at /home and /net yet there's nothing in them. I tried doing a scan on the two devices and on the computer and my antivirus said there was nothing detected. They don't appear to have any files inside the home and net devices and they only appear in two applications so far.
home and net appear in my antivirus, Protectmac. They also appear in Adobe bridge. They don't appear while I normally browse the finder the devices never appeared in Protectmac before.
Does anyone know where they came from? Are they dangerous?
I have screenshots of the devices in both protectmac and Adobe Bridge.

    Hello thanks,
Uninstalling Protectmac removed the home device, Adobe Bridge which came with Photoshop Elements still shows that net device.
Adobe photoshop 4.0 is the only full installation I can think of because it's outdated software.
I was also curios about Folding@home because I just got a PS3 however I never got it installed I made it as far as the second screen of the installation wizard and realized it was pointless to go through the installation so that program was never installed from what I see and I didn't find any traces of it either.
Those were the only two actions I can remember doing recently with my mac. That's why I keep assuming it's a software glitch.

  • What are the pros and cons re using an intel iMac vs MacPro with LP8?

I'm considering getting a new intel Mac in the near future (presuming a new MacPro will be released in the near future - maybe at the same time as Leopard). I compose largely for film and television and I am composing largely using a combination of loops, software instruments and some recorded live performance. I usually sync to a low res quicktime movie.
I do like the idea of a simple and uncluttered work environment with an iMac, added to which there's also a degree of portability with the iMac however the MacPro is obviously more powerful. I'm not sure how much the difference in power between the two computers would affect me.
Would I be compromising myself much if I went for the iMac over the MacPro? What are the pros and cons of the iMac vs the MacPro in relation to Logic Pro 8?

In the world large-scale music composition using samples, loops, etc (especially for film) your two biggest needs are RAM and HD speed/access. The imac looses big time in this department (as a single computer at least) as it can only be upgraded to 4gb ram, and only holds one internal HD, and also lacks any PCI expansion for DSP cards, audio interfaces, etc.
In generalyou want to separate your data vs applications as much as possible, to ensure both can be accessed quickly and easily by the computer. So its best to have your system software / applications on one internal HD, and your logic data (samples, audio recordings, loops) on another drive(s). You can do this with an iMac via USB, FW800, & FW400, but depending on how big your projects get, how many USB and FW drives / interfaces you use, and how much data you need to stream, you could overload the buss on the imac (not sure if it has multiple busses or not). Plus speed wise, internal SATA are much faster than external drives, and the mac pro with its 4 internal slots seems like a great choice for speed and flexibility.
However, if you dont find yourself doing large scale projects, then you might be better off going with an imac. We just purchased one for my father and it runs great! It blows the socks off of my Dual 2.5 G5 tower in terms of CPU speed! If you run into problems running things from the imac, you could always add a mac-mini down the road to stream sample libs, as a Logic node, etc, which seems to be a much more cost effective solution.
I hope this was helpful, but I probably just made the decision harder . In fact, if I were to start over today, I dont know if I'd go with a MacPro, or an iMac / mac mini combination. they both seem to have their advantages / disadvantages.
    Best of luck!

  • Query as Web Services!!! What are its uses and why do we need it?

What are its uses and why do we need it.. if other tools like Dashboard and crystal reports and Webi can connect to universe and create reports and Analytics...

    Hello  Rajsan Madhavarajan
Query as a Web Service (QaaWS) is a SAP Business Objects (BOBJ)  client-side tool that allows users to create and publish Web Services that can be made available over the Web.  Once these web services are created and published,  they can be consumed like any other standard Web Service in software applications including Xcelsius and Crystal Reports.   But first we have to understand what exactly is a Web Service.
    Web Service
A Web Service is a software system that supports  interoperable interaction over a network from one computer or machine to another but is more commonly defined as a client and a server communicating data over the Web using the HTTP Protocol. Using Web Services along with Business Objects allows a live connection of data to be used in applications such as Xcelsius and Crystal Reports through a semantic layer called a Universe.
Query as a Web Service (QaaWS)
The two main components in QaaWS are the Client Tool and the Server.  The QaaWS Client Tool gives the end user an easy to use wizard that allows them to create Universe queries and publish them as Web Services.  Once the QaaWS is published, any user can securely access the data that the Web Service contains as long as they have access to that server. Have a look on  image below that shows the information flow to and from the server via the client.
    Advantages to QaaWS:
Very easy to use and intuitive interface Familiar look and feel for people who have used Web Intelligence
Leverages existing Business Objects Universes Shares metadata with Web Intelligence, Desktop Intelligence and Crystal Reports
    Maintains Business Objects Enterprise Security
Allows live data feeds to be incorporated into Xcelsius Dashboards and Crystal Reports

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages to cookies?

Ok, so I am required to interview some expert for a Final in college. I choose to do my final on cookies throughout the different browsers. The downside is that it is nearly impossible to get a one-on-one interview from an expert in this field. This is my next option. So here are my questions, and I greatly appreciate the help.
    1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of cookies?
    2. Where are the cookies stored, and is it possible for someone to access that information?
    3. You hear horror stories of hackers accessing the different cookies saved on a person's computer, and from there gradually piecing together enough information about that person, to hack into nearly every account they have. How probable is this? What safeguards can a person take against this happening?
Once again, thank you for any help received.

I attended uni back in the 70's, and as I recall we had to do some actual research for our term papers - like from books in the library, and needed to "document" our research in a footnote for each page.
I guess times have changed a bit since then I guess - anecdotal evidence is permissible now?

An SSD is always a faster storage solution. A regular hard drive will almost ALWAYS be the bottleneck in a system, because it's the only part in a computer that has physical, moving parts. The SSD has no moving parts, so there's much less latency when reading and writing. That particular SSD is designed with professionals in mind, meaning that it will right at home rendering video in Final Cut. Hope that helps!

  • I currently have a Macbook pro 10.6.8 and i'm interested software upgrade What are the advantages and disadvantages for upgrading my software.

Ok... the only reason why i want to uprade my software is because of StarCraft 2. For those that don't know, Heart of the Swarm is coming out this March. I've been eagerly waiting for this expansion. I just read that SC2 HOTS will not be able to support any software below lion. I currently have 10.6.8 and i was wondering what are the disadvantages and advantages (aside from being able to play this expansion) of upgrading my software? Are there any draw backs, etc.

Go all the way to Mountain Lion if you can...
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
    But...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
    Also, get more RAM...
You can use this Link to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.7. What are the steps and do I also need to pay for 10.5 and 10.6 along the way?

Hi. I wannt to upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.7.
What are the steps and do I also need to pay for 10.5 and 10.6 along the way?
According to the 10.7 lion page on 'store' it says that you need 10.6 to use it does this mean I'm going to have to do 3 upgrades?
    Thanks

    Why do yoy want Lion/10.7???
Anyway, if your Mac meets the requirements you can skip 10.5.x, and even 10.6.x if you can afford to erase all your data.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

I'm usually good at backing up my photos and documents, but the last 2 months of pictures and videos are on there and not backed up anywhere. I'm heartbroken.

"What are the odds that my hard drive will be salvageable?"
Very very good, it's all sealed and only a large electrical surge or dropping it while running could do some damage.
Take it and use a SATA to USB adapter you can get online for $12-$40 and hook it right up to the new Mac and use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer files.
OR you can access the drive directly and on a PC with MacDrive installed.
However the Mac itself is likley a goner.
