What are my CMYK options ?.

I've recently received a small batch of calendars from a local commercial printers.  The colours are OK, but do not match the originals, especially the blue's.  I've had similar problems with greetings cards from a different printer.  The problem appears to be that I supply the original files in the RGB color space, but they print using CMYK.
I Raw process using Lightroom 4, with adjustments if necessary being made using Elements 10. To the best of my knowledge neither of these programs have the option of editing or saving in the CMYK color space.  For more accurate colours is my only option to purchase the full version of Photoshop (CS6 or CC), then convert and colour correct my images in CMYK mode before sending to the printers ?.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

I looked HP indigo up. It's a process that emulates traditional offset printing through electronic means. Wikipedia writes:
"The technology is based on HP ElectroInk, which uses small colour particles suspended in Imaging Oil (Isopar) that can be attracted or repelled by means of a voltage differential. The ink forms a very thin and smooth plastic layer on the paper surface. The fact that these particles are so small ensures that the printed image does not mask the underlying surface roughness/gloss of the paper, as can be possible with some toner-based processes, bringing Indigo printing closer in appearance to conventional offset lithography, whereby ink is actually absorbed into the paper."
This may explain why there isn't much difference in appearance of the actual printed image on different paper types. ERGO–Very little difference in the paper specific printer profiles–but it's still limited to the four inks CMYK gamut. Apparently HP Indigo printers have wide-gamut capability using six or more color inks similar to  wide-gamut inkjet printers, which none of the digital print houses seem to offer. Here's a paper that discusses this capability:
HP-Indigo Technology and its Application to Photo Printing
On page 3:
Beyond the four process colors
While HP indigo presses brings high quality with four process colors, spanning ISO 12647 color gamut and reaching the darkest colors, they can also utilize up to three additional colors.  Light Cyan and Light Magenta inks for photo-realistic imaging. The light inks reduce granularity, providing smoother images and tone transitions, and a true photo look and feel. The white ink can be used for special applications, such as printing on black papers. IndiChrome enable enhanced color gamut.

  • What Are Our Spreadsheet Options?

    Hi,
I don't want to shell out for Excel and / or Office (I just got iWork, in fact). What are my options for spreadsheets on Mac OS X? I could easily make do with Gnumeric. I'd prefer to avoid OpenOffice earlier than 2.0. X11-based apps are OK, if not ideal. Are there other options (besides Excel and OOo) I'm overlooking? I'd probably want to be able to import at least basic Excel sheets, e.g. Other than that, I just have a variety of odd-job, one-off kinds of spreadsheet needs.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Is that D'Oh!, á là Homer? I can relate…
Anyway, I found the latest pre-release of the Universal 2.0.2 (rc4, to be specific) and installed it. It's nice that X11 interactions (as in starting it for you) are handled, but I have a problem with all applications that run under X11—I get trapped there! The X11 stipple covers both of my monitors and -TAB is intercepted and does not allow you to switch to non-X11 applications. I can activate the screen saver by putting the mouse in the appropriate corner, and when I deactivate it, I can, for a brief moment, see the Mac desktop, but then the X11 desktop returns and no matter how quickly I click on the Mac windows, the X11 environment reappears.
So… How do you deal with this? Are there some X11 options (transparent / shared desktop, e.g.) that make it easier to use?
Separately, looking at this software (OOo) the lack of graphic refinement is quite stark and the applications look very crude by comparison! Now, I can live with this, but it really hits you how refined the Mac user interface has become over its two-plus decade life.
At the moment, I'm inclined to say that if X11 has to be part of the equation, then I'd really rather have Gnumerc!
    Thanks.

  • What are best output options in DVDSP for playback on VGA Computer Screen?

I understand that DVDs were designed to be viewed on TV sets - not computer monitors with much higher resolution than a TV set.
However .... I'm curious what the best output options are within DVDSP3 for playback on a standard 19" VGA computer screen 1024x768 and not necessarily on a TV screen. Any ideas?
Will DVDSP3 address playback on a standard VGA computer screen any better than iDVD6? .... or are they both very much the same?
    Here's my objective:
MiniDV>FCP HD >DVD SP3>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only (no TV involved).
    or...
MiniDV>iMovie6>iDVD6>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only.
    TIA
    SDMacuser

George - I'm not a web designer, so I'm probably not the best person to respond but here goes anyway (FWIW):
(anywhere from 10sec to 2min) for website visitors to play (but not download). There can be multiple audios per web page.
No problem. QuickTime. X-platform and you can set whether it's downloadable or not - but that's really moot, as anything on the web can be captured, especially with the 'analog loophole' such as WireTap or Audio Hi Jack.
I need a combination of buttons from very simple round (or square 20x20 pix) to a bar style with volume control, both with the option to change the color to fit my site.
Buttons are your business - nothing to do with playback functionality. They are usually just a link to a file - your site should be set up to play anything, by anything, that's clicked on… Flash, QT whatever
a player that runs from my site and not somebody else's.
So you're hosting? I'd hate to go down that path… what if your site takes off? What if it goes down? You'd never handle the bandwidth. IMO better to buy inexpensive (but competent) hosting for $10 or so per month and avoid the headaches, and expand the hosting service as and when required.
    See here for example:
    http://soundpropaganda.com/blog/loudness.html
I have QT files, not downloadable (well, supposedly) from text links (check the green "Here's" links). The link method (graphic, text, whatever) is your design, not part of the playback system.

  • Screensavers, what are all the options for?

I recently got and 2nd generation apple tv. I'm a little bit confused about the Screensavers list available under settings > Screen Saver > screen savers. I man there is a lists of Screensavers there: random, flip-up, floating, holiday mobile and so on. I though that these were different effects for showing the pictures; however I have selected some of them and the Screensaver is always the same, all the pictures slowly flying bottom up. So, can someone explain what are these for?
    Thanks!

Yeah, I have tried that. For everyone to know, my screensaver settings are as follows:
    Start after: 2 minutes
    Show during music: Yes
    Photos: my library
Screensavers: any, I have tried them all
After selecting any of them I have tried both, previewing and waiting until it shows, the result is always the same; photos flying slowly from the bottom to the top.

  • What Are My Data Options for Droid 2? What About Texts?

I'm looking over the available plans and I'm really confused.
I've had the same plan pretty much for the past 15 months but I started with a Blackberry. Now I have a Droid 2 and I REALLY need to find a way to shave off some money from this bill.
My bill is always $118 and change with never goes above $119.
I have 900 minutes, was gonna take it down to 450 but viewing my usage I have been around 431-445 the past 3 months. I also have $10 for texts which I hate, I thought there was a $5 text plan?
Insurance, yes, have to because I can't afford a landline and don't have a house to put it in anyway.
I tried to get out of my contract with Verizon when I first became really sick. They were having none of that. I have been sick since September 2010 (symptoms 3 years) and the doctors have been running tests to find out what's causing the problem.
The tricky part is I cannot work anymore, used up everything I had in savings, and even sold my car to have money to pay for medical bills. Now I'm stuck trying to get state health insurance and am without a place to live.
I don't have income from any source but a lot of debt.
I wish Verizon would work with me as even when I can't buy food, I make sure bills are paid because I need that phone on so I doctors can reach me.
I'm not sure how long I'll be unable to work and when I can not sure how long it will take to find work.
I asked them if they could take the Droid 2 back and let me have a regular phone with no data and they said "no, you'll have to pay full retail price for the phone". I believe that was over $500 (no mention of the $179.99 I paid for the broken Tours)
Now here is the back story which really **bleep** me off that they could have screwed me twice:
The only reason I have the Droid 2 is because when I upgraded after my 1st year with Verizon, I got a Blackberry Tour. That phone had so many problems I had to keep taking it in every month for a replacement. Verizon refused to exchange for a different Blackberry.
I even called RIM and they said they had "design" issues with the Tour and it's being taken off the market with the phone carriers, they said Verizon should be allowing you to get a replacement phone of same or lower cost (another Blackberry).
Well that never happened and I had to file an FCC complaint before corporate finally called to help me. I even told them the "NEW" Tour I paid for when I signed a new contract was refurbished because when I tried to send the info in for the rebate, I got an letter stating that particular phone already received it's rebate.
I should have stopped it right there, given them their used phone back and walked away but I'm thinking they are working with me and gave me the rebate ASAP, it will be OK.
WRONG!! 6 months into the contract with the **bleep**ty Tour not working and 6 replacements, they agree to give me another phone for $50. I said drop dead, no more money from me for your issue.
Then they said OK we'll give you a phone of the same value at no charge. So not knowing how the Bold was gonna work yet, I went with a Droid 2 as the Droid 1 had been out awhile and bugs worked out.
Now here is the real kicker in the whole story. After they mailed me the new Droid, I was online paying my bill and noticed Verizon re-set my contract start date from January 2010 to August 2010.
No one told me that and I couldn't get anyone to help fix that mess, they said you got a new phone, what else do you want?
What do you think happened about 2 months after I get the Droid 2??  Yes, Verizon changed the policy and replaced the Tours with the Blackberry Bold for no charge and no contract extension.
Had they told me that, I would have used my old Blackberry for 2 months and gotten the Bold and be closer to getting out of this stupid contract.
I don't know, they make it so hard for honest people who have hit hard times and dealt with bad phone after bad phone to just get a fair break.
I asked so what happens if I just want out of the contract and they said it would cost like $350. If I had $350 I wouldn't be typing this. I suppose I can fake my own death and get out of the contract that way. They make no concession for persons who become disabled and can no longer work. I don't know how long I'll be "disabled" or if I ever won't be "disabled" but I like to think things will get better.
Any ideads would be great. I did talk with someone at UCAN, they help people in CA get out of cell contracts when they have extrordinary circumstances and they gave me a number for a lady at Verizon.
I called that women for 4 months every single day, 4 times a day. She never answered her phone or called me back, ever!
So guess I work on becoming dead since that's my only option. I will never, ever, ever sign a cell contract as long as live, if I live.
I don't mean to sound like such a bitchy customer, I really feel I was screwed from the start of this contract and the screws keep coming!

Not sure why you posted this in the iPhone forum but sorry you're having such a difficult time. With that being said, unfortunately, VZW isn't obligated to assist you in difficult financial times although it would be great if they did. As far as you wanting to get into a non-smart phone to lessen your bill...you will have to look into alternative ways to obtain one if you want to avoid paying full retail. Do you have any friends with Verizon? Check and see if any of them have an old phone that they don't use. Lower your plan to less minutes and actively monitor your usage. Save non-essential personal calls until after 9:00 pm on weekdays if you're calling non-verizon customers. Even without a house phone it is not difficult to get by on a 450 min plan without going over your minutes. My mother did it for 5 years and never once went over her minutes nor did she have a landline phone to use. Text when possible to avoid using minutes. If you stay with the Droid then try to find texting apps or widgets that can help eliminate the need for a text plan. You can also check into services like Skype that can allow you to make free calls to other users...some of your friends may gladly subscribe to those services so that you can communicate and use less plan minutes. You should also talk to VZW to see what lower plan options you have.

  • Significant loss of picture quality in iMovie, what are my other options???

    Hello All,
I am new to the Mac world moving over from windows.
Hooking up my dv camcorder (non high-def) to my TV gives a pretty good picture.
If I use iMovie to import from my camcorder and then iDvd to burn a dvd and play the DVD the picture quality is significantly reduced (looks worse than VHS!).
I am reading that this is uncorrectable through any settings available in iMovie or iDVD. This to me is unfathomable!
Being a newbie in the Mac world I don't know what my other options are.
I read about iMovie HD and Final Cut Express but don't know how they position and can I achieve better picture quality preservation.
I want my camcorder picture quality better preserved. I’ve certainly gotten much better results on windows with various packages (but have little experience).
I came into the Mac world believing that this sort of thing is what Mac was great for so a bit surprised.
How do you folks get around such a significant picture quality loss???
My home movies through iMovie and iDVD look embarassing for circa 2009!

I convert my imported dv files to AIC at 1080p before editing.
There is a small quality drop using this approach, I find it acceptable but some others don't.
I have added an original dv movie clip, two exports in different formats of the same clip as prepared in imovie 09 and another of the same clip exported to back to dv as prepared in imovie 6, to a disc image of a DVD created in iDVD.
I don't feel the differences represent the differences some here are reporting they see themselves, see what you think

  • Alltel to Verizon and the Connect bundle? What are my phone options on this?

Hey guys! I've been reading around and I've found similar answers to my problem, but not the exact issue. Like most of you, I still have the Alltel contract(and it's staying that way) and it has a Connect plan for $19.99 on my line only. I'm wanting to upgrade to a new phone, but I'm not sure which Verizon phone will work with my plan. I'm not going to let them force me to upgrade, or I'm going straight to At&t down the road.
Now, the upgrade option on the site lists alot of phones that are compatible with my current plan, but the team members in the stores say I am required to upgrade to a Verizon contract, which is $30 more(again, I will not do this, nor will I tolerate corporate theft). Somehow I don't think this is true and the talking suits are just doing their usual slave routine for commission(instead of getting a real job).
    That's something else I won't tolerate! =)
What phones have you guys been able to activate on the $19.99 Alltel Connect plan? I currently have a Samsung Intensity. It's just a basic qwerty pad phone.

  • What are the kernel option required for udev in 2.6.28 kernel

    Hi All,
I just want to know the exact options that we need to enable in the
kernel configuration for the latest udev. Some options specified in
    http://webpages.charter.net/decibelshel … rimer.html is
not available ( or changed position ) in the 2.6.28 kernel.
I know that copying the existing config file from linux distro will do
it. But want to know about the exact kenel modules/support needed for
udev to get everything working. Please help.

    B wrote:
OK I was definitely not qualified to answer that question .
May I ask what you are trying to do exactly?
If you are rebuilding your own kernel you might as well check the documentation in the kernel building utilities (gconfig, qconfig, xconfig, ...). Granted, it takes longer, but you get to know your way around. Also, I don't think those options are specific to 2.6.28 either - it would surprise me if they get altered so frequently you'd need to inquire about a specific kernel version.
I am using the kernel 2.6.28. Thats why I specified the kernel version as 2.6.28. Yes, those options are generic to latest version of 2.6 kernel. But things were changed from 2.6.13 kernel and again as per the comment from kay sievers, it again going to change in next version.
Yeah, SIGNALFD only in the next, the to be released version
    http://www.spinics.net/lists/hotplug/msg02162.html
I am just searching to find out the kernel configuration options to get the udev working. The udev primer is for 2.6.13 and I know there are lots of changes in newer version of kernel/udev. I know how to build kernel and I like menuconfig than the GUI utilities.
    Thanks for all the answers/comments.
