What are pdf attachments?

I have a pdf I created. I'm trying to reduce the file size... something I do quite often (by just going to Document > Reduce File Size). However, in this instance, I'm getting the following message: "This PDF file contains attachments. PDF Optimizer will not process the attachments. You'll need to open each attachment and run this command to process all files."
I did not attach anything to the document, so it must mean something that I'm not understanding. I created the file using QuarkXPress 7. I just imported images (vector mostly, but a few bitmapped images). I have never had this issue before, so I'm not sure what to do about it. Oh... and if I just hit "OK" it does reduce the size slightly... from 7 mb to 6.7. Normally it will go down to less than 1 mb.

PS I'm using Acrobat 9 Professional

Well, I was facing same kind of problem but the trick works for me as well. Thanks
to you guys.

  • Why are PDF attachments are showing up on the body of emails, instead of as actual attachments?

PDF attachments are showing up in the body of my emails rather than as attachments. I need to be able to open them in other programs, eg notability, mad can't do that if they're not real attachments. On my other devices they're showing up at regular attachments.

When a PDF that has only one page is attached to an email the Mail app will display the conte tents of the PDF in the body of the email. But the PDF is still an attachment. Tap on the PDF to open in iBooks or forward it to your computer to open it there. Again, the one page PDF will display the contents of the single page but the PDF is still an attachment and can be used like any other attachment.
When a PDF that has more than one page is attached to an email the Mail app only displays the icon for an attachment.

  • What are these attachments ?

    Hi,
one of my users send email with MAIL 3.5 latest version using IMAP.
When he sends an attachment like a word document, SOMETIMES Mail makes a second attachment automatically which is an html page (blabla.htm) and sends it with the attachment.
For example the user attaches a word document hello.doc and sends the email with ONE attachment. The receiver tho gets 2 attachments, hello.dec and hello.htm.
How can I switch that off? Its annoying.
Sometimes Mail though doesnt do that. Today i got 2 mails from that person who swears he made both mails by clicking "new message". One with 5 word documents all ok and one with 6 word documents, and, 6 silly htm files again.
Any ideas what is going on?
    Any help appreciated
    Thanks

    Hi there.
Sorry but my problem really isnt solved yet.
In fact its kindof getting worse.
First Mail sent all attachment as "double". Then I completely removed the Mail folder and preferences and completely redefined the IMAP account. I made sure composing is set to TEXT. (The only choices are TEXT and Rich TEXT).
Now its better but I still cannot figure out why its doing what its doing.
In fact, I couldnt believe my own eyes so I made detailed screenshots for you all HERE:
Note that the email adresses and filenames have been obscured on purpose in these screenshots.

TEST888 - I send ONE ps.doc word file and what arrives is ps.doc AND a ATT7747144.txt ?? (Composing is set to PLAIN TEXT in OSX Mail).
    it gets better
TEST8881 - a test with 2 attachments this time. IN THE LIST OSX mail says it only has one attachment? What? And what arrives seems correct. Why no .txt attachment this time??? This is not consistent.
TEST8882 - a word and an excel file, this one worked.
I made these three tests withing 10 secs of eachother and didnt change the settings during the tests!
HELP! What is going on? Anyone pleeeeease?

  • Since switching from Chrome, I can't print .pdf attachments directly from my gmail. Please help.

It used to be (in Chrome) that I could view a .pdf attachment in gmail and from there print. Now in Firefox, when I view a .pdf attachment the print option is there and the print dialogue box comes up when I click it, but once I hit "OK" nothing comes out of the printer. I can print emails and other items, so it's not a printer connectivity problem or a problem with the print setup in Firefox. The only items affected are .pdf attachments in my gmail account. I've tried switching .pdf readers and turning off Protected Mode in Adobe. Please help!

I'm unable to email PDF attachments, this has started in the last 2 weeks - any clues why as other file types are sending?

    Greetings,
That is rather strange. Attachments are attachments.  The big difference between what will send and what won't is usually either who you are sending it to (wrong email address) or how big the attachment is (most email providers have a limit to the total message size between 10 MB and 20 MB).
-- What happens when you say you are "unable to email PDF attachments"?  What error message do you get?
-- Are you sending these emails using the Mail program?
-- What is the file size of the PDF you are trying to send?
-- What happens if you compress the PDF before you email it (Highlight the PDF on the desktop and then go to File > Compress) ?
-- What happens if you send the PDF to yourself?
    Cheers.

  • PDF attachments are trying to open in Microsoft Publisher

Why are my PDF attachments trying to open in Microsoft Publisher.  I click on the attachement, Publisher opens up with a File Conversion windown opening as well.  It will not open.  I have to save the file, then open Adobe Acrobat, then open the file.  It just started doing this a few weeks ago.  Anyone know what the problem is??

I'm not sure how the issue would have started, but it sounds like you need to change your file associations so that your computer knows what program to use to open a file with a .pdf extension. Assuming you have a Windows system, below are the directions for fixing this problem (copied from the Microsoft support website):
To change which program starts when you double-click a file, follow these steps:
Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button, and then click Explore.
Click a folder that contains a file of the type that you want Windows to open in a program that you select.
Right-click the file and, depending on the programs installed on your computer, complete one of the following steps:
Click Open With to choose the program that you want.
Point to Open With, and then click Choose Program to choose the program that you want.
The Open With dialog box is displayed. Use one of the following methods to select the program that you want to use for this file type:
In the Programs list, click the program that you want to use.
Click Browse, locate and then click the program that you want to use, and then click Open.
Click Look for the appropriate program on the Web to browse the Internet for the program that you want to use.
Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box if it is not selected.
    Click OK.
Let me know if you need more help.

  • PC Clients are unable to see or open PDF attachments

I have seen an increase in my clients unable to open or see my pdf attachments. I work as a professional designer and rely on pdf email proofing. I am careful to click on the "widows friendly attachments" option and yet I'm still getting about 30% of my clients emailing back unable to open my files or saying I've not added the attachment when actually I have. Has anyone else seen and increase in this problem and know how I might go about solving this problem?

I have heard of this problem but I don't know if there was a definitive fix or not. Some answers have been re-installing the 10.4.7 combo updater. Another solution has been to make sure you are sending plain text messages. If you are responding to a previous message, it may pick up a different format.
Some e-mail servers, such as AOL and Compuserve, have a very difficult time extracting e-mail attachments.
I have done quite a bit of work with e-mail formats. I would really like to see what these attachment problems look like. I will turn on my e-mail in my profile. If you want to send me an e-mail that you know contains an unreadable attachment, I might be able to find out why.

  • I have OSX Maverick on an iMac using Outlook e-mail.  PDF attachments are included in the e-mail  as the whole document rather than just the PDF icon.  How can i have just the PDF icon as an attachment?

In Outlook my PDF attachments appear as whole documents and not just the PDF icon.  How can I have attachments included as PDF icons and not the documents?

For your own viewing, you can of course control-click on the attachment and select "View as Icon".
For others' viewing, it depends upon their email reader.  To ensure that attachments are not displayed expicitly you can put them all in a zip file (via control click and "Compress") then attaching them, or you can use third party stuff like Attachment Tamer.

  • What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?

The PDF/A-1 standard does not specify how compression is performed. What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?
The information I have gathered (not sure if all are true)
    LZW should not be used
    JPEG2000 may not be used
Few say, JPEG can be used but its a lossy compression. (PDF standard clearly states lossy compression can't be used)
Also, how to figure out whether a particular file is PDF/A-1a or PDF/A-1b and what kind of compressions are used in that file?
    Thanks in advance.

For better or worse, ISO specifications are written in a language from a parallel universe.    After dealing with ISO standards for a while, you learn what specific words really mean. I should know - I am chair of the ISO PDF/X task force and co-chair of the PDF/VT task force.
The word should does not specify a requirement. PDF/A does not prohibit lossy compression.
JPEG is always a lossy compression. There is a mode of JPEG2000 compression that is indeed lossless. Note that JPEG and JPEG2000 are totally different compression schemes. (I believe that PDF/A-1 as well as PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, based on older versions of the PDF specification do not permit JPEG2000. PDF/A-2 based on ISO32000-1 and PDF/X-4 based on PDF 1.6 do allow for JPEG2000.)
    ZIP compression is lossless.

I recently purchased an Iphone 6plus and I am receiving pdf attachments that are shown as winmail.dat attachments on the iphone. When I check the same e-mail on my macbook pro the attachment is a pdf and I can open it. Why is this happening?

I had this problem too after i upgdatd to OS X Mavericks... only the songs on my iphone 5s that i purchased from itunes would play.
i read something about it being a syncing issue. when you plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable, the person said to switch from automatic syncing of itunes to the "manual" option. mine was already set to manual so i wasn't sure anything would work. BUT, when i plugged my phone into my computer, it started to sync all of my music on my phone again (top of itunes bar where song playing/time is listed said "now syncing 123/534 songs to x's iphone"). once that was completed, i checked the music app on my iphone and everything was back to normal!
so, i would suggest setting your music syncing settings to manual if you haven't tried that yet!
    hope this helps!

  • PDF attachments are blank.

I have been composing and sending emails with pdf attachments for years through my gmail account with no problems...in the last few days, my customers are all complaining that the pdf files are blank.  All the pages send, but they have nothing on them.  I have been double checking before hitting send, and everything is fine.  I go to my sent items and the pdf's are indeed blank.  It is quite frustrating.

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

What are the new terms for renewal of payment for converting pdf to word?

    Hi joannep59572680,
The terms haven't changed recently. ExportPDF subscriptions renew annually, unless your turn off Auto Renewal before your renewal date.
Do you have a specific concern about your subscription?
