What are permissions

Hey all,
Every so often i repair permissions on my computer, like i should... And most of the time it fixes those little bugs which can ruin your life. Good! then that works, it does what it should! now here's my question, who knows what the text you get when you repair permissions mean (see text below); What are all those r w - and so on? Does anyone know, and can anyone explain to me the message i got below?
Thanks to everyone for the great amount of help i can find here
Best to all
Charles

  • What are high and low values in sharepoint 2013 user permissions?

    So I hit this api:
    http://win-a3q7ml82p8f/sharepoint_site/_api/web/roledefinitions/
And got the different high and low values. But I am not clear with what they mean:
    For eg:
    High: 176, Low: 138612833
    and
    High: 176, Low: 138612801
So for different values of Low how does it change the permissions?
For 176 its binary is 10110000. So looking at this table here: http://www.dctmcontent.com/sharepoint/Articles/Permissions%20and%20Mask%20Values.aspx
I can understand that 176 would mean the following set of permissions:
    DeleteVersions
    OpenItems
    ApproveItems
But what's confusing me is, that user has OpenItems permissions but not ViewListItems permission? Am I wrong in understanding this?
Also how does the value of Low change the overall user permissions?
Note: I looked at this answer: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/9d6df168-e8f5-4323-8c34-0646c03eff68/rest-api-what-are-high-and-low-in-effectivebasepermissions-and-getusereffectivepermissions?forum=sharepointdevelopment
But honestly I cant understand what that means. Can someone help please?

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

  • What are default group permissions supposed to look like?

I'm struggling with permissions under Leopard (I understand many others are as well). My quick and dirty question is: what are the default user & group ID numbers for a fresh leopard client install?
I've only done archive & installs lately so no longer have a test bed to compare from. Currently on one machine user id and group id (GID) are BOTH 501. I think Leopard has moved the default user IDs to 1000 (on up) and the default group ID to 20 (staff).
When moving files between machines at one installation the group is coming across as "Unknown" from a Leopard server. Trying to Get Info on these files and unlocking the padlock in Get Info window will crash the Finder!! So I guess i'd like to change the group IDs so they're consistent on all machines. Didn't have this problem with Tiger.
    Thanks for any help!
    -MD

OK, so followed the instructions in <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307128> and things were fine until i updated to 10.5.2. Now if I choose Get Info on a file in any external drive there is no longer a padlock under Sharing & Permissions. It only says "You can read and write" and that's it. No list of owner (Me), groups, everyone. they're not even listed anymore and the padlock is GONE!
ls -l in Terminal gets me lists like
    drwxr-xr-x 6 steve _steve 204 Dec 8 2004 Hüsker Dü
    and ls -ln returns:
    drwxr-xr-x 6 501 501 204 Dec 8 2004 Hüsker Dü
    i don't think i like the 501 501 thing. i'd prefer 501 20 .
anything i should be aware of before changing the group across the board to 20? (i'd also like to change the user folder from 501 501 to 501 20). should i use the dscl command, i used to try to get out of this mess before, somehow?
Permissions under 10.5 has sadly become a real mess! reminds me of 10.0 days...

  • What are "Disk Permissions" ?

I have a MacPro (and a MacBook). When I was having a problem with something earlier in the week I called Apple Care, and, among other things, I was instructed to click the "Repair Disk Permissions" in Disk Utility. I was surprised when the operation took almost ten minutes, and it looked like thousands of lines of stuff went scrolling by.
(BTW, I did a "Migration Assitant" from a Mac Mini when I started up this Pro; maybe that had something to do with it?)
I'm new to the MacOS, and still learning my way around the underpinnings (well, the surface of the underpinnings...) so I am not familiar with "Disk Permissions."
So, pray tell: what ARE "Disk Permissions," and what happens when I repair them? What does "Verify Disk Permissions" do?
Any sources you can steer me to, I'll be glad to follow thing links.
    Thanks,
    --PS

Verify Disk Permissions just checks the disk permissions without fixing them. I always just use Repair Disk Permissions.
"Permissions" on files and folders define who is able to access and modify what on the computer. It's one of the reasons Mac OS X is more secure than Windows, and it protects the typical user from taking action that will damage the overall system.
This article explains what Repair Disk Permissions does.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
It is a good maintenance step to take about once every month, and after a major update or software installation.

What Are The Minimum Permissions In Order An User To Be Able To Access User Profile Data With JavaScript And REST API.?
In the User Profile -> Permissions there is only the option for "Full Control".

    Hi Nikolay,
Thanks for posting your issue, you need to set permissions on User Profiles = Read. Kindly find the below mentioned URLs to get the code and more details on this.

What are all the ACLs being removed in permissions repair? The last repair a few days ago removed gazillions of them, but the're back and being removed again. This makes "permissions repair" last about half an hour.
So what is an ACL, anyway?

  • What are the access permissions on Site Contents?

    Hello
I don't want outsiders accessing Site Contents.
What are the access permissions? Can anyone see that page?
    Mel
    Mel

Go to Site Settings -> Users and Permissions -> Site Permissions -> In the ribbon select Permission levels. Here you can see different permission levels like Read, Contribute etc.
You can create a permission level by clicking on Add a permission level. Select the permissions you want to give the users. "Make sure to not give the permission "View Application Pages  -  View forms, views, and application pages. Enumerate
    lists."
Now you can create a SharePoint group and associate this permission level to that group. Finally add those users to this group and they won't have access to Site Contents.

  • If my hard drive disappears and is no longer running what are my options?

this is a last resort. Dropped the MBP. it wouldn't boot up. wouldn't boot in any mode, did the resets in order. safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation. It finally booted off the install DVD. Hard drive icon there. Did an archive and install. I did all the disk util prior to  archive and install. permissions and disk checked out ok.
Attached a USB external. started backing things up manually. SU came up and i did the combo update to 10.5.8
Restarted MBP and the drive died, not even getting to login screen, onlly endless spinning at startup screen identical to problem after dropping it. installed Leopard on external. tried to set startup disk from internal. icon not there as if drive did not exist.
After HD crash, ran diskutil in verbose mode, device not present when i used the name,
note: this is the second external drive. i did the combo update on the external and it also died. couldn't see the icon. booted into single user mode. device no found. Again, safe mode failed to work as did all the disk util recommendation.
at this time, the external is leopard 10.5, no update, firefox running with adobe flash update.
    1. SU combo update, never again. use the one from the Apple website in all future updates.
    2. physical inspection of inside revealed no loose connections, broken cables or wires.
    3. dropped the MBP on the side of the optical drive which i had to repair and reinstall. works fine now. PRAM battery in good order.
    4. looked at every discussion from every forum on here with varying results, all dead ends.
if the drive isn't spinning or responding, is it dead or frozen? is $99 for diskwarrior the next step? Will it even see the internal drive, since no other freeware or shareware recovery apps have been able to see the internal HD.
what are my options? i had no backups made, i have no firewire cable or drive, i didn't know about time machine, i absolutely must have the drive restored, or the data.

    diskwarrior manual:
To build a graph for the directory of a disk, all of the following must be true:
1)The disk must appear on the desktop.
2)The disk must be an HFS (Mac OS Standard) or HFS Plus disk (Mac OS Extended).
3)The disk must be locally attached.
4)There must not be any detected hardware problems with the disk.
disk does not appear on HD. therefore i have to assume there is physical damage to internal drive, pull it
install a new one and send the old one to data recovery.
this here concludes today's discussion on "*** were you thinking when you didn't have a back up"
also, investing in Firewire drives and cables is selling out to proprietary mandates that Apple thought up as one more way to tie up its users to Apple theology. reason one i have refused to put the money out for it.
    guess the man wins.

  • What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

You want to allow someone to open your document and fill out the form (in the fields you have created), but not change or edit the form, right? Here's the answer - assuming you are using Acrobat Pro and someone will be opening the PDF using at least Acrobat Reader 9 and up:
Tools > Protection > Encrypt < Encrypt with Password
Answer YES to change the security.
    A new window opens:
Do NOT select Document Open (or that will require a password to open the document.)
Select: Permissions (Check the box next to "Restrict editing and printing of the document.")
Change the following 2 settings from the drop-down box:
              Printing Allowed: Select High Resolution
Changes Allowed: Select Commenting, filling in form fields, and signing signature fields
Leave selected: "Enable text access for screen reader devices for the visually impaired"
Change Permissions Password (insert a strong password)
Leave all other settings alone in "Options"
              OK - OK
Re-enter the Permissions Password (the one you entered above)
              OK - OK
Save the PDF to apply the security [notice that (SECURED0 will appear after the document title]

What are the minimum requirements to successfully Synchronize a SharePoint 2010 Calendar or Task List with Outlook 2010?
SharePoint permission levels required for the user profile?
Does the user need top level permissions on the SharePoint site?
What other minimum requirements must be met for Outlook 2010 to synchronize successfully with SharePoint 2010?
    TheDrape

    Hi,
To synchronize these libraries and lists, you must have Outlook 2010 installed on your client computer and you must have Collaborate permission to the library or list.
You don’t need any permissions for the user profile.
I provide you a link about synchronizing SharePoint 2010 content with Outlook 2010 for your reference:

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?

The PDF/A-1 standard does not specify how compression is performed. What are the permitted compression techniques for PDF/A-1?
The information I have gathered (not sure if all are true)
    LZW should not be used
    JPEG2000 may not be used
Few say, JPEG can be used but its a lossy compression. (PDF standard clearly states lossy compression can't be used)
Also, how to figure out whether a particular file is PDF/A-1a or PDF/A-1b and what kind of compressions are used in that file?
    Thanks in advance.

For better or worse, ISO specifications are written in a language from a parallel universe.    After dealing with ISO standards for a while, you learn what specific words really mean. I should know - I am chair of the ISO PDF/X task force and co-chair of the PDF/VT task force.
The word should does not specify a requirement. PDF/A does not prohibit lossy compression.
JPEG is always a lossy compression. There is a mode of JPEG2000 compression that is indeed lossless. Note that JPEG and JPEG2000 are totally different compression schemes. (I believe that PDF/A-1 as well as PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, based on older versions of the PDF specification do not permit JPEG2000. PDF/A-2 based on ISO32000-1 and PDF/X-4 based on PDF 1.6 do allow for JPEG2000.)
    ZIP compression is lossless.

  • What are Firefox's timeout for loading pages and images

On a website I'm developing I'm experiencing problems with images occasionally only partially loading. I'm trying to prove the problem is caused by my hosting company's server terminating resource requests prematurely . To this end, I created a test pages that has several very large images embedded. I navigate to the page and see how many images fully load.
However I need to ensure that Firefox is not influencing the test. I.e. firefox is not giving up on the images if they are taking too long to load.
    So my questions are:
    1) What are the various parameters that firefox uses to abandon downloads of images etc? And does it depend on the number of images on the pages, tabs open, number of domains simultaneously accessing, etc
    2) Can I change the settings in about:config so firefox will wait a very long time for resources and only stop when the server stops sending stuff.
    3) Does firefox log anything so I can tell if firefox has given up the server has given up. (I noticed for the bad images, Firebug says "Image corrupt or truncated")
    Thanks.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, maybe after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.
    See [[Firewalls]] and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls
