What are some advantages of Snow Leopard over Tiger?

Is it worth my time to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard?  I use my computer primarily for word processing and movie editing.

Well you likely have 10.5 Leopard, as per your signature says.
Tiger was 10.4
Download the free MacTracker to find your machine and the latest operating system it can handle.
http://www.mactracker.ca/downloads/Mactracker_6.1.zip
If you really do have Tiger 10.4 (look under the Apple menu), then download from this link instead.
http://www.mactracker.ca/downloads/Mactracker_5.3.zip
You need a Intel based processor for Snow Leopard, and it strips out a lot of the PPC code you are not using and also has faster video drivers, so you'll see a performance increase. Most all the Leopard programs (universal binaries) should work in Snow Leopard because not a lot was changed.
Lion is a another problem, save that for your next hardware upgrade. It's a real problem case.

  • What Are Application Keywords in Snow Leopard?

I recently updated to Snow Leopard, and I've been trying out the expanded syntax coloring. However, I cannot find one example of code colored as an application keyword.
I set the color for application keywords to bright red so it would stand out. I have hundreds of AppleScripts to test, and I have opened about half of them. Not once was any code colored as an application keyword. There were classes, properties, enumerations, parameters, commands, etc., but no application keywords.
So, what are application keywords in Snow Leopard? I thought I knew, but now I have no idea.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Brett

Thanks for the info. The 10.6 changes documentation says:
*Syntax coloring for scripts now has much more detail: commands, parameters, classes, properties, and enumerated values all have their own category now, instead of sharing the “application keywords” category, and may be formatted differently depending on whether they come from an application or a scripting addition.*
Does that mean all application keywords are now in different categories? If so, why is there an application keywords option in the syntax coloring prefs?
    Thanks

  • Can't UInstal Snow Leopard over Tiger

Hello, I need some help installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook. I have Tiger installed 10.4.11 and have been having a lot of problems with it recently. The Apple store advised I buy the Snow Leopard Mac Box Set which I have done. I have made all the backup's on a separate hard drive, but now when I try and do the install it will not work. It runs for about 5 or 10 minutes and then comes up with the message "MAC OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click restart or restart your computer and try installing again". I have tried installing twice now with no luck, both times the same error. I have a total hard drive of 148.73GB and I have 64.41GB free.
Does any one have any ideas to help me
    Thankyou very much.

Launch Disk Utility & select your MB's hard drive from the list. In the bottom of the window you will see the *Partition Map Scheme* listed. Does it say "GUID Partition Table"? If not, you will have to reformat the drive for the installer to work.
Also make sure your MB can connect to the Internet during the early stages of the install process. If you use the default 'upgrade in place' method (which I recommend), the pre-install app will try to download certain updated info from Apple's servers & store that in the files it writes to the hard drive before the restart from the DVD that actually upgrades the OS.

  • Can I Install Snow Leopard over Tiger, without the Mac Box Set?

I've just spoken to an Apple advisor in Canada and he told me that I could buy the Snow Leopard CD and install it on my MacBook that has Tiger, and I wouldn't need to buy the Mac Box Set.  He said that since the Mac Box Set isn't available anymore Apple put the full software on the CD instead of just the upgrade.
However I get a contradictory information on the Apple website.
    What is true?

  • Snow leopard over tiger

can you go from tiger to snow leopard using the upgrade disk or do you need the full version

Yes you can upgrade 10.4 to 10.6 if your machine meets the specifications for 10.6.
The 10.6.3 disk is the full version, the upgrade installer package just removes 10.4 only and leaves your Applications and User accounts folders alone.
However you need to always backup your personal data off the machine via drag and drop methods to a external storage hard drive, then disconnect it before doing anything.
    Most commonly used backup methods
This way if the install upgrade goes bad, you can hold c (or option key) while booitng and erase the drive (Disk Utility) and install 10.6, (instead of upgrading 10.4 to 10.6 using the installer package)
This method erases all programs and user files though, why you need to backup your files off the machine first.

  • What are the advantages of NI-XNET over NI-CAN

Assuming that I'm only interested in CAN, are there specific advantages to going with NI-XNET over NI-CAN?

Olivier:  Thank you for the comments about the disclaimer in my recent post here.  While re-reading the post, I realized that I mis-stated one substantial fact, and that was the network speed.  I have worked with high speed CAN for so long I automatically stated 500 KBPS as the network speed I used to achieve the 95% bus loading.  However, in this case I meant and should have said 250 KBPS. It is possible to run J1939 CAN at 500 KBPS (I haven't tried it) but the SAE has not as of this writing adopted 500 KBPS as a bus speed for J1939.  As J1939 CAN frames are (to simply state it) merely CAN frames filled out to a full 8 byte data package (albeit with an extended 29 bit arbitration ID vs the standard 11 bit ID of high speed CAN) and having examined the information Olivier pointed out (almost 9 months ago) I have no doubt that the XNET cards can deliver the high performance required to achieve near 100 % bus loading at the higher network speeds.
    Now for more disclaimers:
I have exchanged emails and spoken with Olivier and others at NI at length about their CAN technology and have encouraged them to push the limits so those of us out in the field can continue to stay ahead of the competition using our favorite tool, LabVIEW.  I have received no compensation for my views on this matter.  For those of you that want to put my experience into perspective, I have worked with LabVIEW for 16 years & CAN for 5 years.  My compensation comes from being able to get the work I am given done on time and under budget (usually ahead of time) - and I couldn't do it without LabVIEW and the support provided by National Instruments application engineers and the members and contributors to these forums.   Thanks!

  • What are the advantages of forms10g developer suite over forms 6i

    Hi All,
Am new to this Oracle Forms-10g developer, so I would like to know what are the new features of 10g over 6i. What are the main differences between oracle versions like forms-6i, forms-9i and forms-10g developer suite.
I even wanted to know what exactly is this OC4J Instance Start.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Chandra Sekhar.

is the most ignorant answer I've ever seen on this forum. That's quite a horrible distinction to possess here. Frank, it's clear you took my post as a personal insult for a product you've worked on in a major way. That was not my intent, and for that, I apologize. I hope you will take most of my other posts here so far (the overwhelming majority of which are to answer questions for others instead of seek help for myself) into consideration.
I stand corrected on overlooking the enhancements related to the interfaces with Java.
There are perhaps a number of viewpoints to Chandra's question. Our users, who are focused on using the applications to do their job-- well, having the forms environment moved from client-server to the web is almost irrelevant to them, and losing client-server was no advantage. I guess I looked at it too narrowly from a pure Forms programmer's point-of-view. One of the things you describe as a new feature-- the ability to see GIFs in the builder, well since I saw ICOs in the builder in 6i, I just don't see an advantage as much as a change/fix to make it work like before.
Since I never looked hard at 9i release (which I admitted), perhaps I am ignorant to some new features. I went to OTN and looked up the 9.0.2 documentation, and didn't see what these 20+ features might be. If you would point me to a specific document, I would sincerely appreciate it.

  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of using PS/CS5 in 64bit over 32bit please?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using PS/CS5 in 64bit over 32bit please?

From a practical perspective, besides the 64 bit version being a bit faster at just about everything, limitations on document size are lifted in the 64 bit version.  Essentially, how much can do is limited only by how much RAM you have installed in your system.  You can do things like have larger documents, deeper history, etc. and have it all work quickly.
On the other hand, many 3rd party plug-ins, especially older ones, only provide 32 bit versions, which will only run in 32 bit Photoshop.
Both 32 and 64 bit versions are installed by default.  It's important to note that most of the preferences are separate between the two, so you can have two slightly different setups that might help with specialty operations you might need.  This gets pretty subtle, but for example I keep the 32 bit version configured with only 1 cache level, so all previews of high bit depth images are always composited in high bit depth.  This aids me with some aspects of astroimage processing.  It's slower, but more accurate.  By contrast I have more cache levels configured for my 64 bit version, so that's faster for general photography work.

Only the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

  • Trying to re-install Snow Leopard over Lion and Macbook Pro is beeping like a memory failure

I installed Lion on my work 15" MacBook Pro i7 to give it a go, and it's not working with the system we use for Active Directory login, so I need to roll back to Snow Leopard.
I don't have a Time Machine backup, but I have pulled all the data I need from the machine, and have wiped the hard disk ready to reinstall Snow Leopard.
I have a retail copy of Snow Leopard that I've recently used successfully for fresh installs on other machines, but now once I insert the DVD into this machine that's had Lion on it, it's not responding and just making alarming BEEP BEEP BEEP noises.
I googled that and it might be bad RAM (possible, but unlikely? the machine has been running very well up until now)
I've wiped the PRAM, but the instructions for wiping the SMC are a bit cryptic for these machines ...
Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this? A firmware issue of some sort?
Maybe the hidden EFI partition on the drive won't let you install Snow Leopard over a disk that's had Lion?

Might be some useful info here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1175934
" I used target disk mode to install Snow Leopard on its partition. I used a friends Macbook Pro, but I put my machine into target disk mode and ran the installer from his user account and optical drive. From a couple things I read online, it seems that Apple recommends putting the other machine in target disk mode and doing it the other way around. I guess some critical files might not have been installed? I also used a retail copy of Snow Leopard instead of my grey recovery disk, so that might be it too. "
"Your machine is newer than the retail copy of Snow Leopard. Use the restore disks it came with.
The installation will need to be done from your machine. You may need to do a net install, so look at "Remote Install Mac OS X" in Utilities."
I'm currently installing from the macbook firewired to the other machine as recommended so hopefully that might help

  • Need Icloud so what is best upgrade from snow leopard

I don't have icloud with Snow Leopard so what is best upgrade from snow leopard. Is there a better way to get Icloud?

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    MY CURRENT SOFTWARE:
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, with Adobe Bridge CS4
Apple Final Cut Studio 3 (includes Final Cut Pro 7)
    Apple iLife 2009 (includes iPhoto)
Recently, people in my hometown began planning an event of local historic significance. A group of elderly men who worked on a major industrial project (steel fabrication in a local shop) here are about to go on a bus trip to see some of their work. Most have never journeyed the hundreds of miles to see what became of their efforts. Some of these men are veterans of WW II and Korea, just to give you an idea of their age. The bus tour is expected to happen in mid-November.
Typically, I shoot photos in JPEG format and catalogue all photos in iPhoto 2009. However, for this occasion, given it is a once-in-a-lifetime event, I am seriously thinking about switching my Rebel over to RAW format. I want to approach this trip as a project with the end-product being archival quality storage of the images I capture. To catalogue the photos, I was seriously thinking about borrowing a few pages from Peter Krogh's book "Digital Asset Management for Photographers" (2009, 2nd Edition, O'Reilly Press). I recently had a chance to skim the book over, and noticed a chapter on how to structure a workflow using RAW-format photos using Adobe Bridge. I have briefly thought of purchasing Lightroom, but that's too rich for my bank account. Since I have the Rebel (given to me as a gift about 13 months ago), the MacBook Pro and Photoshop Elements with Bridge, some questions came to mind:
(1: I am considering either using Photoshop Elements 8 with bundled Bridge CS4 to handle the RAW files (and to possibly store them as DNG files) or upgrading to Photoshop Elements 11 to do the same. This would stretch my budget. Does Photoshop Elements 11 come bundled with Bridge anymore? If so, is it functional for what I want to do with it?
(2: Does anyone on this forum use Bridge to handle RAW files? If so, are there any online tutorials/demonstrations you would recommend?
(3: I assume it would be fairly easy to take all RAW files of photos shot on the trip, transfer them into Bridge CS4, and then convert them into JPEGs so they could be imported into a iPhoto library (now standing at over 46,000 photos). Are there any obstacles/possible problems in this transfer process I should look out for? (I would be worried about what would happen to the metadata)
(4: If I store the RAW photos from this trip as DNG files using Bridge, and if I subsequently purchase newer software such as the latest Lightroom or CS6, will I be able to open up this trip's archive in the newer software without loosing any metadata or organization?
(5: I have been viewing the photography tutorials on Lynda.com, including the titles taught by photographer Ben Long. Mr. Long did a title on the Digital Rebel T3i, which is very similar to my Rebel T3, as well as his "Shooting on the Road, from Gear to Workflow". Are there any other Lynda titles I should review while my account is still active?
(6: What's up with this Photoshop Elements / Premiere Elements bundle? Does anyone here use it? If so, what are the advantages over the Photoshop Elements upgrade?

An update on my Photoshop Elements experience. Adobe's DNG converter and Photoshop Elements' batch converter both worked like a charm. I was able to take the CR2 files from the Rebel, convert them to DNG, and then use PSE 8 to batch-convert them to JPEG. I impported the JPEGs into iPhoto 2009 with the date/time metadata intact.
I have yet to open any of the files in Adobe Camera RAW, but I want to do that after the New Year. I'm tied up with other work right now and don't have the time.

    Hello cpreasbeck,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.
    Transition Guide Xserve
    http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.

  • FM7.1 to FM10 : What are the advantages?

    Hello,
I have to use FrameMaker on Solaris, in a networked environment.
Currently I am using 7.1 and want to move to 10.
7.1 already has serious issues with importing pdf files.(http://forums.adobe.com/thread/891661?tstart=30)
You see I need to give some good reasons to my boss so as to convince him!
So 1st I want to know if there is a stable 10 ver. that works on Solaris.
2nd-ly it would be excellent if someone can say very briefly, what are the advantages/problems in ver 10 over 7.1 for Solaris environment.
Particularly looking out answers from the user "Error7103 "!
    Thanks in advance,
    DP

FrameMaker 8 supports Unicode too and is faster and more stable than FrameMaker 10.
Another question that has to be considered is:
    SoLarry?
Do you want to make any investments in the former Sun platforms now owned by Leisure Suit Larry Ellison?
If you are running Frame native on Solaris, you are running on SPARC workstations. Sun discontinued those over a year prior to the Oracle Assimilation. Since then, even the Solaris x86 workstations are gone. Oracle is out of the desktop biz, except for thin clients. If a seriously nasty security exploit appears for SparcStations, ORCL may not patch it promptly. As your hardware ages and fails, you may find yourself getting parts from eBay.
I suspect that the bottom line for this inquiry is that it's not likely to be a an FM7 to FM8 upgrade on Solaris, but a total platform migration to Windows. The label on that can reads: Worms: species, quantity and condition unknown.
