What are some of your favorite presets for lightroom? I havent found a b&w that I like yet, i guess its personal preference. Any suggestions would be great

- No b&w preset suits every image

Just saw this topic.
We use video a great deal in our campaigns. One of our best ones though was for an offering that the written word couldn't convey as quickly, succinctly, or visually even with graphics that a short commercial could do. We therefore created a simple video with professional VO work and blasted it out via email and social networks. The video clearly communicated our product and it's value to our prospects.
In return we got a enormous response of form submits from individuals wanting to download the products overview documentation. It is still one of our most watched videos.
We are now looking at adding in more value-add videos to go along with the current 'product information' stable to help generate more soft-sell opptys.
We are firm believers in using video. You can't just put anything out there and expect just because it is a video to do well. You must plan it carefully, think the messaging and value offered through just as much as any outbound offering. Time is still valuable and your prospects are always asking what's in it for me. Once they get something that they believe wastes their time, they will be more skeptical in the future regarding your videos or any messaging.
Keeping trust and relevance is essential to generating value with video.

What are some of your favorite packages / VIs?

After Hoovah gave me a link to his Variant Repository, I realized it was a very useful bit of code. This got me thinking: What are some other addins or libraries that people use, and why? Or maybe just one little VI that you find yourself using over and over.
To get it started, I have attached one such VI that will move a "pop-up" input window to your mouse location.

I made this vi several years ago and still use it all the time. We do lots of data logging here and the standard is a time stamp on column 1 and then data in columns 2-x.
The time stamp can be fed in or generated in the vi if the timestamp input is left disconnected.
It also takes a single dimension [DBL] array of measurements and file reference and converts the LV timestamp to OLE (Excel) time.
The thing I like about using it over other methods of writing a spreadsheet file, even XLR8, is since it uses file references the data file is locked so if you try to open it. You can still open it in Excel but only read only. This allowes LabView to still be able to write to the file when you are viewing it in Excel. I know you should not do that, but everybody here does it.

What are some of your favorite practices in GUI design?

I saw a conversation a few weeks ago about LVOOP vs Clusters for passing around data that I found fascinating - and quite informative. I thought I'd try to open up a discussion about GUI design and see what I could learn.
Edit: to give an example, I have found that I have taken an irrational dislike to tab controls. Instead, I use clusters with a few supporting VIs. Switching the "tab" will just make the proper cluster visible, and the others invisible. Set each cluster as a type def in the project and just edit that for when I need to change something. It lets me already have all of my control data bundled, and as a bonus sorts them automatically in Event structures.

I wouldn't go that far. I generally need to be more organized in my block diagram when using tabs, but that doesn't mean they are bad. Have a state in a state machine for updating each tab. Then when updating the UI look at which tab the user is on, and only update those UI elements.
There are other limitations to tabs that frustrate me, like .Net controls sometimes do weird things in tabs. And some times I would have too many tabs and it starts to add rows which get all kinds of confusing. In these cases I would hide the tabs and replicate the functionality with a single column listbox which changes the tab value. But at that point it would be just as easy to insert a different VI into a subpanel.

That's a very broad net you're casting.
I mean Flickr is flickr users favorite plugin, and those with Nik Collection may be fond of their Nik plugins...
Which plugin(s) you like / use really depends on the person and workflow.
I mean, I'm particularly fond of the plugins I've written, but that's because I understand how they work, they do what I want, and if ever I encounter a bug I fix it. But some people are not so fond of my plugins...
I have written over a 100 plugins, and use about 10% of them regularly, and about half of them not at all (the other 40% on an occasional basis).
In other words, plugins are a means to an end. If you have no desire for that end, you'll have no desire for the plugin that accomplishes it.
For example, TreeSyncPublisher is indispensible if you want to maintain an export tree external to Lightroom, but otherwise it may be useless. YMMV...
Perhaps a better question is:
"What are some good sources for plugins so I could peruse and find those that may help me get my job(s) done?"

I have been editing with Final Cut Express since 05 and I want to be able to do fancy visual effects I cannot do with Final Cut Express so I put it to you; what are some good visual effects programmes for the Mac? So I half answered my own question. FCE will respect the alpha channel in a PR 4444 file. But from the limited testing I was able to to, there doesn't seem to be a way to export it ( or other flavors of PR) as a PR sequence. It renders as AIC, which is fine. FWIW, it can always be exported as Pro Res via QT Conversion, but why bother?
However, I now have to say – despite what I said in my first post – that I'm not 100% percent certain that the all the codecs will be available by buying Motion. I'm like 95% sure, the more I think about it. But I have too much NLE and graphics "stuff" on my systems to test it conclusively.

I don't know of any that do exactly that, but I use Pinger. You can even make free wifi calls trough them. Call quality is as good, if not better, than Skype too.

What are some of your system temps?

Hey all.
Out of curiosity, I was wondering if you all could post your System temps and your CPU temps. I am running Folding @Home now 24/7 and I just want to compare some of yours with mine to make sure I am doing ok.
I just got a new case and installed an 80mm exhaust fan in the top center, another 80mm exhaust towards the top on the back of the case, a 120mm intake in the front panel, and have another 80mm intake in the center of the side panel.
Before I was Folding the idle temp for CPU was 109F. 42C.
Idle SYSTEM temp was 98F. 36C.
Now that I am Folding the CPU is always at full load so now my temps are always around 112F. 44C. for my SYSTEM and 125F. 51C. for the CPU.
BTW, this is with the FSB set to 143, 1.85V for CPU, and 2.7 V for Memory. The ambiant temp in the room varies between 68F. 20C. and 72F. 22C.
My main concern is when summer hits and the ambient temps go up to about 80F 26C.

I get the exact same TEMP with my volcano 9 but im not deaf.... lower the RPM to about 3500 with the pot. You dont need to run it at full blast, its way too loud. Just have a good air flow in the case and have it set to 3500 RPM.

I have a Windows machine and I bought Quicktime Pro and it works for the short .mov files my digital cameras create. I tried a bunch of "free" DVD conversion programs, including Videora for iPod with mixed results (I couldn't get Videora to work). Finally, I bought PQDVD for iPod (http://www.pqdvd.com). It was expensive when you compare it to free software ($39.95) BUT you can stick a DVD (that you own of course) in and press a couple of buttons and it makes a video file. The nicest part is it makes very small files (275MB average). It also does it twice to three times as fast as anything else I tried. The movies look and play great on the iPod (except you have to go all the way to the end to stop them, hmmm). So if I pay myself $10 an hour, I'll get my money back pretty quickly. In one night, I got 4 movies moved over to my iPod, no hassles.

Newbie to unix / what are some good books

Hello Unix world, i'm very new to the world of Unix. Just got a sunblade (with solaris 10), and i'm in the process of putting it on a x86 machine also.
What are some good books out there for someone like me? I took linux 101 in college, but thats about it. I''m looking for a book(s)
to take me from the position that i'm currently in (equivalent to my mom on windows), and put in into a position where i will be able to take a few Certifications(solaris 10).

On hands experience is always good, when it comes to books i'ld recommend any O'Reilly book, like their "UNIX in a nutshell", even if i haven't read it myself i suppose its good :-)

Always like to see peoples opinions about added plugins for logic pro.
WHAT ARE SOME GREAT PLUGINS WELL WORTH THE MONEY?
TYPE OF SOUND CAN BE SYNTHS/EFFECTS WHATEVER YOU LIKE.

i've stopped using external plugins cause it always ended up with some issues :
- plugins would have some bugs
- plugins would need to be updated all the time, and the new version would mess up with my songs
- automation would not work properly
- settings would not have been saved properly with the song ...
of course i'm exagerating but :
- logic already has plenty of plugins all sounding well and covering everything you need
- i don't master half of them yet
- there's always a way to achieve the same sound of an other plugin / technic, may it be less easy
- any of my songs could be opened with any Logic Pro 7 in the world
- i feel like plugins are the new video games. my friend don't play video game anymore, they download plugins and rave about the latest ones. i don't need plugins to get creative, and when i have an idea of a sound or a song, i've never thought "**** i need reaktor" or anything.

When trying to send a pdf for multiple digital signatures, it keeps erroring out. What are some reasons?

I am having trouble sending out a document for digital signatures for multiple people. I enter the signature fields and click on Distribute. It then allows me to choose the receiving parties. I click on <SEND> and it processes for a moment and then I receive the following two errors: "Failed to send" followed by "Form distribution is aborted". It was working for me earlier and isn't now. I am fairly new to Acrobat and especially Digital Signatures. What are some possible reasons I am getting this error?

I finally got the document to send out by unclicking the "Collect name & email from recipients to provide optimal tracking" button, however, the responses come in as anonymous, so it's not real helpful with tracking my responses. Plus, I don't know if I'll encounter problems with follow up. The normal tracking system allows me to resend a message to those who have not responded. Now I guess I would just resend the request to those I have determined have not signed. Still working through the bugs but I'll update what I know and figure out here. Perhaps I will come to a solid solution and give a better summary.
As of now, I am sending and receiving responses... but the recipients have to change the received file to save as it is coming to them as read-only. Seems like this should be a whole lot less complicated.
