What is the recommended number of clients per Mac server? Also what are some recommended specs when purchasing an Apple machine that will have Mac OS X server installed? We have around 300 clients that need to be enroled on the Mac server. I want to know what is the recommended amount of clients a Mac server should contain. Also what are some recommended specs to make sure the server will flawlessly?

    Hello cpreasbeck,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.
    Transition Guide Xserve
    http://images.apple.com/xserve/pdf/L422277A_Xserve_Guide.pdf
On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.
    Regards,
    Jeff D.

  • What are some useful apps for school work on the iPad?

I am a middle school student and I need some apps to do school work on my iPad Mini. Do you know any?

Pages is a good word processor.  Other apps will depend on the subject matter...there are dozens of great math and science apps in the app store.  Which ones to get depend on exactly what courses you are taking.

  • What are some good apps for OS X?

I am always looking for reliable free apps for my mac. Here is a list of my top apps:
For watching a variety of video formats VLC is great www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
Keeping my browser safe is mcafee site advisor www.siteadvisor.com and also adblock https://extensions.apple.com/
To transfer files to and from my S4 mini Android file transfer www.android.com/filetransfer
To scan files when transferring information with pc's ClamXav www.clamxav.com
For working with excel is a format that is similar to traditional spreadsheet Neooffice www.neooffice.org
These are my top must have apps. Any comments or suggestions?

Hi Volker, seems you have a lot of questions! so I'll answer one by one
1)Macs can read and write Fat32 partitions, but it can only read NTFS partitions. There are several softwares that allow you to modify data on a NTFS partition.
2)Around 230Gb once you get some apps (office, adobe CS) and music in there.
3)Thunderbolt is a very recent technology, it can transfer video, sound, usb ports and more to an apple display for now, surely more devices will be developed for this port.
4)You need a device that is MAC compatible, but most of them are so that's not going to be a problem.
5)No, the macbook air doesn't have the ipad's dock connector.
6)SD and SDHC cards with no stated capacity limit.
    7)Yes!
8)As long as it's mac compatible it will work, 99% of modern printers are.
    9) Yes!
10)As of September the 1st 2011, the current mac version of Open Office is 3.3.0
11)AirPrint is for iOS devices such as the iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch, some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPrint
12)You need a internet connection (good bandwith) and an iTunes store account with a valid credit card registered to it. This way you can rent, buy and watch movies and series on demand on your Tv. More info here: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/apple_tv?mco=MTM3NTM1Nzk
Hope I was of any help!

There is none and one is not needed. Security is built into OS X.

  • Okay so im new to mac what are some good apps?

    Mozilla vs Safari?
    Useful widgets.
    Picture editing software
    Any plugins for photobooth?
Theres this one program this guy showed me its for wifi, but it has all the wifi spots in descending order i really liked that.
I want all freeware to lol...And any other stuff that you think i would like im up for too

    Mozilla vs Safari?
I like Safari. Mozilla works fine, but Safari is a bit more integrated. FYI, you can also download Camino which is an OS X native build from the wonderful people who made FireFox. Personally I have Safari, FireFox, Camino, and Internet Explorer... just in case. I only use Safari, though.
    Useful widgets.
I use Countdown Calendar, iStat Pro, and Scenario Poker regularly.
    Picture editing software?
I use LiveQuartz and/or Seashore. LiveQuartz is a bit more robust, but Seashore is light weight. Either will do anything that MS PhotoEditor or Paint will.
    Any plugins for photobooth?
Use iPhoto; its integration with OS X is priceless.
    OTHERS...
Make sure you get Stuffit Expander. Handy to have around.
I have WhatSize, which is a nifty way to see all the files on your system organized by file size. It's useful for tracking down duplicate or old files that you no longer need, which end up taking up lots of space.
Also get Flip4Mac, which will play Windows Media natively right in your Safari browser. No need to install Microsoft's Mac version of Media Player. Very slick for streaming. You don't even realize it's there.
Adobe Reader is nice to have around, but Preview (OS X's native image+PDF viewer) open PDFs much faster, so I installed Adobe but kept Preview as the default.
X Resource Graph is a non-Widget application that does pretty much anything that iStat Pro does. I have both, but keep iStat Pro in Dashboard all the time. I guess there's no reason to use both. I just haven't parted with XRG yet.
    MS Office.
    Google Earth is fun, too.
Oh yeah, and all these (Except for MS Office) are FREE
Hope this helps (Gold star, please!?) hehe.

Hey I'm trying to stream NFL games to my iPad but I can't find any apps that allow you to do that. I use comcast as a tv service if that helps.
