What are symptoms of dead or dying battery?

Besides date & time (which have been fine), what are the other symptoms of a battery that is dying?
I'm still on my quest to find whatever might be causing or contributing to occasional system freezes. At this stage, I will rule out nothing.
Thanks!

Thanks, Cornelius.
I'll check the battery as you suggested.
My system (10.4.11) has been freezing every couple of days over the past few months. No error message, such as for a kernel panic; it just freezes, forcing a restart. Since first reporting it here, I've followed the suggestions to (and not necessarily in this order):
Repair permissions
Run Applejack
Run Disk Warrior
Restarted in Safe Mode
Run the Apple Extended Hardware Test
Removed all third-party software (most recently Norton Anti-Virus) and any software that automatically loaded on startup or login.
Wiped (zeroed the data) and reformatted the drive
Run MemTest
I've run some of those tests more than once.
The only peripherals are:
- Two external drives and a Digidesign audio interface on Firewire
- A cable modem and router on Ethernet
- A printer and an iLok dongle on USB (in addition to monitor and keyboard/mouse)
The freezes have occurred even when the the computer was idle, with anywhere from 0 to 10% CPU activity.
Everything seems to behave properly.
Any other ideas?

  • What are symptoms of flash memory degradation

    I have a 2011 Macbook Air with 250GB of flash memory.
    I have since Yosemite been experiencing significant slowness in typing into both Numbers and Pages documents.  Like over a second per character at times.
    - I have suspected iCloud (I do open the documents on my iphone 6 and keep the application in a non terminated state).
    - I have suspected new releases of Numbers, of Pages, and of OSX with Yosemite.
    - I have also suspected not having enough Flash memory to support the applications
    Recently (today) I removed the Flash Drive, and installed an OWC 480GB drive.   Since the reinstallation, both Numbers and Pages have not shown any slowness when typing (I will update this after I get a couple more days of experience).   In fact, the whole systems seems quicker.   I am concluding
    1.  The available storage on the old flash (<10%) slowed the system down; or
    2.  The original Flash, after three years of daily use, had degraded to a point of producing the symptoms of slowness.
    Has anyone else experienced degradation in software (notably Pages and Numbers) and has found a solution?

    Once you installed the new SSD, did you clone your existing drive or start with a fresh OS X installation?  If it was a fresh install, then you simply will not be able to determine what caused the performance increase back to normal.  If, however, you cloned the drive, then I would suspect that it was the fact that you had so little space left on the drive.
    If I reached the point of 10% or less available storage (25GB in your case) I would expect to start seeing degradation of performance on any hard drive.  Actually, it all depends on what size files you typically deal with.  If you commonly store (or update) large media files to your SSD then less than 25 GB available space is a significant limitation that makes the file system's job or preventing significant fragmentation impossible.
    Also, one issue that many users do not understand is the repercussions of upgrading your iCloud storage.  If you do so, please realize that iCloud will attempt to store all of your iCloud data to your MacBook Air's SSD even if it completely fills the drive.  This has been the downfall of may users that don;t realize this.

  • HT1510 What are signs of needing a new battery for an iPod Shuffle 2nd generation?

    I have an iPod Shuffle 2nd Generation that is about 4 years old.  Sometimes it won't turn on, charge, and even not show up on my computer when it's plugged into it.  I put it on the charging dock and sometimes the light won't even come on showing that it's charging.  Could that be the battery or the iPod itself??
    I hope someone can help me!!  I am severely lost without my music!!!!!!
    Thanks!

    Did it previously work properly and reliably with this computer?  If it did, and it does not now, and nothing else has changed, such as connecting new USB devices to the computer, or using the shuffle through a USB hub (instead of connecting it to a direct USB port on the computer), then it may be a problem with the battery.  A 2nd gen shuffle would actually be about 5 or 6 years old at this point.
    If you have connected new USB devices to the computer recently, as a test, you may want to try shutting down (powering off) the computer and disconnecting all USB devices (including any hub), except standard keyboard and mouse (if used).  Then start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.  Is there any difference?
    If this is a new computer, it may be something else.  Please post back...

  • Better battery comparison - what are your thoughts.

    Most people are judging their battery usage by times of day. I want comparisons by usage. Go to settings/general/usage and it will tell you the usage since "time since last full charge". What are your times....Mine are for today since I charged overnight.
    Usage 3:12 hours
    Standby 7:59 hours
    Batter percent 46%
    Most of my usage has been twitter or email. A little bit of game usage.
    (yes I realize there are other threads of battery comparison but they are all comparing how much batter they have during times of day but that is dumb because there is no telling what you have been doing with your phone.)

    Hi there, i have recently bought a new iphone 3GS and i'm seeing the same resaults for my battery and i own a 3G as well which my wife now uses and ive noticed that after upgrading to 3.0 its battery was depleting a bit faster then when it was on 2.2.1.
    I logged my 3GS and i got in one day
    Usage : 6 hourr/ using wifi most of the day, internet use, mail, ipod, SMS, and watched about 40 minutes of video.
    Standby: 12 hours
    after all that it died and shut off.
    I've tried draining the battery twice now to condtition my battery and i saw about a 7 percent jump each time so maybe that is working. I was getting about 4 and half hours hours before i conditioned and then about 5:45 mins and then about 6 hours.
    I do remember last year when 2.0 came out my 3G had terrible battery life, very similar to what i'm seeing with my 3GS, and 2.0 was fixed with a firmware, so i only hope that the first firmwre will address this issue.
    Or apple could just tell us the truth that the new phone has worse battery life then last yeasr model.
    I did a percentage stat of life i was getting by 1 percent and i found that for each percent that depleted i got about 3 minutes and 45 seconds. If i was on 3G and surfing or checking email, i was getting about 2 minutes and 34 seconds, i literally could watch my battery depleted like i was driving a hemi and watching the gas gauge go down. So if apple claims that your supposed to get about 9 hours of regular usage on wifi or just playing movies and music and games, and 5 hours of usage on 3G, there must have some sorda super model we all dont have!!!!?????

    Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
    I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
    For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
    When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
    Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
    Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
    Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

  • What are the best external backup battery choices for the iPod Touch 4G?

    Hello,
    I am so disappointed with the battery life on my iPod Touch 4G, even when I turn off location services and notifications and put it in airplane mode.
    As such, I realize that I am going to have to get an external backup battery, even though I don't like the idea of carrying around yet another item.
    What are the best choices out there, especially any ultra-portable (aka small and non-bulky) ones?  I came across this Juice Pack Air - iPod Touch 4G Case, which seems like the perfect solution, but it is on back order and seems to have been so for a good amount of time.  Who knows when it will be in stock again.
    TIA for any and all help!

  • What are dead locks in BW

    hI,
       What are dead locks in BW

    Hi ,
    The concept of dead lock is as similar as in Oracle. If Process P1 is using resource A (locked by P1)) and waiting for B and Process P2is using resouce B(locked by P2) and waiting for resouceA. This creates dead lock as both can not proceed further.
    In BW deadlock usually occur in delta load. As, far as my observance deadlock usually occurs during processing of update rules. This may be because more than one package will be processing same record as in delta load, data moves from changelog of below level to next level.

  • Dead-code elimination--what are all the rules?

    This article http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/library/j-jtp12214/ has an entire section on dead-code elimination (DCE).
    Does anyone know what all the criteria are by which the hotspot JIT compiler can determine that code is "dead"?
    One obvious criteria is if the code will never get executed. I think that the canonical example is code like this:
           static final boolean debug = false;
           static void someMethod() {
                   if (debug) {
           }Here, the compiler (javac as well as hotspot's JIT) can determine that someMethod has nothing inside it that could ever get executed, so it can be turned into an empty method.
    If you look at that developerworks link above, he gives an even more interesting example for how hotspot's JIT can make sophisticated DCE based on inlining.
    What I want to know is what are all the criteria that hotspot can use to decide that code is dead. Code that is never executed is always correct. But can it make more liberal decisions as to what counts as dead code?
    Consider this code:
         int[] foo = new int[1000];
         int bar = foo.length;
         // don't use foo again, but do use barA smart compiler could recognize that the array declaration and allocation is actually useless, and simply do
         int bar = 1000;(Thank you Brian for this example.)

    What are the rules? Naturally, the only definitive answer can be given can be given by the HotSpot JIT.
    That's not a very satifying answer, but it's true. The server JIT, like most compilers, has been taught hundreds and hundreds simplifying transformations that, in part, enable dead code elimination. Enumerating the criteria is a nearly impossible task.
    But, your specific example is an interesting case.
    int[] foo = new int[1000];
    int bar = foo.length;For simplicity, I assume foo and bar are locals to a method, and in this case, the 6.0 HotSpot Server JIT will recognize that foo is unchanged before the initialization of bar, and effectively change it to:
    int[] foo = new int[1000];
    int bar = 1000;The JIT can't get rid of the allocation of the new array without a more advanced optimization called Escape Analysis, which attempts to determine the dynamic scope of objects. Of course, if these two lines comprise the whole method, then the analysis is fairly trivial.
    Any intervening code will make the analysis more complex:
    int[] foo = new int[1000];
    baz(foo);
    int bar = foo.length;
    qux(foo);The calls sites will preclude your desired optimization, unless the called methods baz and qux can be inlined and analyzed. The code in baz can neither modify foo nor allow it to escape, and qux can not allow it to escape.
    HotSpot's implementation of escape analysis is not quite yet complete, but should be available relatively soon.

    Hi,
    I asssume it's a laptop!
    1st I would run it right down & then do a full recharge, then run it down again + a full recharge..
    Check that you do not have any apps running in the background, reset PRAM..
    When all's done I usually run a movie & time how long the battery lasts..if after that & no joy call Apple Help..

  • What are the symptoms of a failing fusion drive?

    My 2012 iMac with a 3 TB fusion drive is suddenly behaving erratically.  What are the symptoms of a failing fusion drive?
    I'm experiencing random freeze, sluggish performance, and long boot ups with an occasional universal "NO" icon at boot.
    I have AppleCare for this unit that expires next December.  Should I bring it in?  These problems happened right after a hard crash that came out of the blue.  I can get the machine to work, but it seems if I do anything "heavy duty," it freezes and reboots.
    I did a "verify disk" on this drive in the disk utility and it said something like "fusion drive is missing one disk," then it rebooted spontaneously.  I did another verify, and the second time it passed.

  • I overcharged my ipad 2 battery for about 3 hours. what are the consequences, i overcharged my ipad 2 battery for about 3 hours. what are the consequences

    i overcharged my ipad 2 battery for about 3 hours. what are the consequences? and there are these tiny fibers and dust that enters insideipad screen. how will i clean them. .please help

    Relax, you cannot "over" charge it.  The built in charging protection ensures it will not overcharge the battery or do any damage leaving it plugged in.  Many folks (myself included) leave our iPads and iPhones plugged in overnight, all night, so they are charged and read for use the next day.

  • Symptoms of a dying battery

    Have you ever wonder the how to know if your MacBook is in a risk of a hazarous battery?
    I have found a symptom of a dying battery.
    1.- The Magsafe's LED is changing every second from orange (cahrging) to green (charged)
    2.- The battery indicator on the system menu also changes from Charged to 99% every second
    Do you know more Symptoms? That could be a good help to other users.
    I have a small video, but I do not know how to post it here Sorry

    MacBook Pro 17" 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I would directly contact Apple.
    Do not use the computer like that for long, also do not leave the computer along with the power cable pluged and the battery at the same time, it could burn.
    Check that the battery does not look "fatter" or open.
