I am new to Enterprise Portal.

Ans: As a EP administrator you have to take care of all all the issues regarding the:
1. Creation of Users, Groups, Roles.
2. Assigning the roles to the user.
3. Creating and managing the groups and assigning the users to grops.
4. Taking care of all the portal Object created. Checking of all the Portal related logs for insuring that all the portal services are working fine.
5. If there are some issues regarding the users data and there objects then you have to take care of that.
I guess you must be knowing that there are few roles that you need to have the full control of portal. You must these roles to manage all the administrative functions of the portal.
Ques 2. Also What are the activities of EP Administrator?
Ans: Well this question is more or less same as above. I cannot figure out what extra you want to know here. But also let me tell you about the KM related issues in Portal. There is one part of EP that is KM (Knowledge Management). This is related with the Knowledge sharing using the management of the documents and other resources which are stored in the server repository. By this functionality you can manage the document and can share your documents and relevant data with other.
One more thing is Collaboration, related to the collaboration of various members of the portal. Here you can configure IM (Instant Messsaging), Desktop Sharing, and various other features.

You do not have the latest firmware. The latest firmware is version 1.5.
You should upgrade. Make sure you have a current backup and then select "update firmware" from within RAID admin. It will then ask you for the location of the firmware update -- it should be in /Application/Utilities/Xserve RAID Update.

Role of a SAP Functional Consultant
What are the differences between a functional and business consultant?
The difference between Functional consultant and Business consultant are as follows:
1) A funcitonal consultant is able to configure the system unlike business consultant.
2) Functional consultant know more about business process unlike Business consultant.
3) A business consultant will bring business process knowledge and provide it to functional consultant who in turn used this knowledge to configure the system.
4) Functional consultant has more configuration knolwledge then Business consultant.
The responsibilities of a support consultant are:
- Primarily responsible for Handling tickets and application support to the endusers
- When an issue comes diagnose, analyse and solve the issue
- Responsible for any enhancements
- Writing functional specs and interacting with Abapers to develop any user exits
- Training the end users and preparing end user training material
For those who wished to know the role of a functional consultant. Below is one view:
A functional consultant evaluates the demands in talking with the customer's representatives, transforms the essence into an abstract and algorithmic business model. Hence, he identifies the use cases and transforms them into logical and technical views.
Then the main task starts: customizing the respective business area and making sure the system reacts in the manner according to the constraints of the requested use case.
The consultant documents the settings and prepares proper guidelines that allow other consultants to do further changes or repairs with due efforts.
The consultant takes care that proper training is given to the users and that the system is usable, performing appropriately and the business flow is complete and correct.
During go live he assists the technical staff by testing the behaviour of the system.
After go live he guarantees that the procedures remain usable and consistent in real live situation and proposes enhancements.
The main duty of a consultant is to transfer external know-how to the client. It is not manpower that counts but intelligence, understanding of processes, a feeling for defects and general a common sense.

What are the required permissions for Portal?

Assuming it's not top secret info, can anyone provide a link to, or list the permission requirements of OID with regard to running Portal? We are having serious headaches with permissions and would like some reference to the exact requirements.

Developer desigens the repository according to the business requirements in MDM Console.
Then in Import Manager imports the data into MDM Data Manager .
There in Datat Manager manages the data,cleanesing ,deduplication is done.
Now when time to send data to other Systems Developer does it with the help of MDM Syndicatior.
*MDM Admin
Admin creates the roles and users to access the MDM Repository and to perform theoperations in MDM Clients depending on the roles.

yes, there is preconfigured content (templates) in the portal.
Have a look at [SAP Help|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/5a/0338f80c0b11d7b84800047582c9f7/frameset.htm].
You'll find two entries in the left hand navigation: "Pre-configured Roles" and "Standard Portal Content".
The information is not that detailed but you might get a first impression.
Besides the standard portal content there are so called Business Packages, which provide pre-configured iViews, pages, worksets and roles for specific business processes / scenarios. You can find them [here in SDN|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/contentportfolio].

What are the installer(setups) I need to install for webcenter Portal

I use a 32bit laptop now and I want to start working on webcenter portal. What are the applications I need to install in order so I can successfully get my webcenter working. I already have installed Jdeveloper 11.1.1.6.0

This depends on what exactly you mean by 'my webcenter'.
If all you want is develop your own webcenter applications (using the WebCenter Framework), you might be good to go only with the webcenter jdev plug-in (see http://www.oracle.com/ocom/groups/public/@otn/documents/webcontent/156082.xml#oracle.webcenter.app). Your apps will be deployed to the integrated WLS. There will be two important missing pieces:
a) WebCenter Content as the document storage (requires also a database)
b) BPEL/BPM as the workflow engine
You might also want to install WebCenter Portal: Spaces, or deploy your apps to a separate WebCenter Portal server (running on its own Weblogic Server).
Optionally, you might also want to utilize other servers contained in the WebCenter Portal license such as Secure Enterprise Search for enterprise searching and/or Oracle Access Manager for enabling single sign-on between the above mentioned components.

WebLogic Portal, if Desktop enabled, it will render from Desktop->Portal->Books->Pages-->Portlets. You can get these information from WebLogic E-Docs.

Few of daily activities in which you as a Basis Consultant should involve are as below:
- Day to day system administrative issues raised by users e.g. User ID locked or new SAP ID creations etc.
- Daily watch on background batch jobs. If any job failed due to some reason, work on it to avoid such failure in future with the help of function consultant
- Watch on system performance
- Authorizations & Roles definitions & assignements depending upon requirement.
- System Backup depending upon business requirement
- Printer setup in SAP
- Watch on Print spool to avoid failures in SAP doccuments printing
- Watch on interfaces (IDoc/EDI etc), if any, with external system
Also talk to your earlier or senior Basis consultant to know more.
