What are the best settings to use on the Sony Cybershot DSC HX1 for taking portrait type photos?

I have used the portrait setting on the SCN selection but always end up with fuzzy edges on my photos.  Are there manual settings that I can adjust that would correct this problem?  I have done every other techniqe that I can find to "stabilize" the camera and no matter how still I stand, I still end up with fuzzy edges.  Any ideas?

Hi bethstange,
Welcome to the Sony Community!
May I ask if this fuzziness show up when you're not using the Portrait mode? Portrait mode will give you an image with a blurred background while the subject is sharpened. We don't recommend this mode when taking group shots as the subject in the center of the image will be the only one in focus. For everyday shots, we recommend setting the drive mode to Intelligent Auto. This setting will automatically detect and adjust the shooting settings for you. No need to change the Scene modes for different scenarios.
We recommend using the SCN modes when you intend to shoot a certain type of scenario without changing the type of subject. An example would be setting the camera to shoot Landscapes, this setting will give you a wider depth of field than shooting portraits of people.
More information about the camera is available here.

  • What is the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc.  tiff? psd? 16bit? dpi?

What are the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc for editing?
Should I use tiff or psd?
    8bit or 16bit?
    How many dpi?

That will depend on the photometric resolution of your originals. For jpegs it would be a waste of space to convert them to a higher resolution than 8bit, but if your images actually have already more than 8bit, you will want to preserve this quality. Then he 16bit format will help to prevent color clipping.
Both tiff and psd will preserve the lossless workflow. With Photoshop as external editor I would use he psd format for better support of layers and transparency, e.g., when you want to create watermark files.
The dpi will only matter, when you export the file for printing.

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

  • What is the best modem to use in the UK with the airport extreme?

Hi I need to get a new modem having recently bought an airport extreme. What would be the best modem to get for use in the UK? Thanks

Even if a theoretical "best" modem might exist.....I think you would agree that it would be of little value if your provider did not support it in the event of connection difficulties.
The best modem to use would be one that your Internet Service Provider supplies or supports.
If your provider supports the Draytek Vigor 120, that product might be one to add to your "look" list.

  • What is the best stylus to use with the iPad Air?

I'm looking for a stylus to use for the iPad Air to use for sketching and just simple note taking And from the reviews I've read it sounded like the Adonit Jot Pro for 29.99 seemed like a good deal to use for the iPad Air. I'm also a worrywart about if it will harm the screen? So I'm looking for someone's review with their experience using "The Adonit Jot Pro on the iPad Air." Thanks so much For your time and review!

I've never had a problem with it. I like it a lot for writing. I like the very fine point. I don't know as it's a great stylus for sketching, though. I tend to do most of my sketching in the app Paper with their Pencil stylus.
When using any stylus, it's good practice to make sure there are no bits of grit on the screen before using. If they should become trapped between the stylus tip and the screen, you could get scratches.

  • Data Recover From Formatted Drive? What is the best program to use to get back Logic Projects and any other file type?

I was in the process of reorganising my hard drives so I could RAID them however I managed to corrupt one drive and had to format it which meant I lost all my Logic Files and some other files. I managed to save a lot of files (mainly video files) before I had to format the drive but I need a Data Recovery service that will not alter anything on the hard drive and will put all the formatted files (regardless of the type) back for me so I can get the rest of the ones I need.
    Thanks in advance.

    What about folders and such?
No. FS doesn't reconstruct folders. However, Data Rescue does, depending on how you use it. About the only thing in Data Rescue a Quick Scan ever seems to show you are files that are already live.
So that leaves you with a Deep Scan, or a Deleted Files scan. The first pass of a Deep Scan will attempt to retrieve folders and files, along with their original names. The second pass only looks for file patterns. Like recognizing a Photoshop .psd file. It will recover it, but give it a nonsense name. A Deleted Files scan only results in nonsense names of recognized file types; no folders.
What were you using File Salvage on? A hard drive?
Yes, though you can use it on a flash drive, or any other mounted drive.
At the moment it is estimating 289 hours remaining on a 1TB drive. Can it not go faster?
No, both of the software mentioned are slower than molasses in January. When you delete anything in Windows, its file table entry simply tagged as deleted. So to unerase them, the tag is removed. That's why it works to quickly and easily (assuming you haven't already overwritten the data to be recovered).
In OS X though, the whole idea of the underlying UNIX structure is all about security. It's not supposed to be easy to retrieve deleted items. When you delete items, their file table entries are erased. So the only way to find deleted items is to scour the entire drive for BOF (Beginning Of File) markers that don't have a matching starting block to anything that is in the file table.
Another question, half the drive was empty. Will it fly over that empty space or will it sieve through it incase there was some files stored on it?
If you use the Expert mode is FS, you can choose to do that:

  • What's the best program to use if I am trying to check for viruses/malware on my Mac?

I went to what looked like a normal website and got a warning that said "This site may harm your computer." I left the site right away, but now I'm wondering if there's some sort of program I should use to see if my Mac got any kind of virus or malware from the site.

Are you using the browser add-on "Web of Trust"? I use that and simply do not go to a website that it classifies as having a poor reputation (unless I do know the site).
Although I have had WOT installed in most of my browsers for a long time, I must say that I'm often disappointed with the results. Ratings can be entered by any registered users and there seem to be some "super users" who'd ratings count more than others, making it almost impossible for other users to overcome the rating by somebody who has a grudge against a particular web site. I also find sites that are simply a bit overaggressive in their advertising to be rated just as RED as one known to dispense malware. There doesn't seem to be any policing of the ratings, either.
I don't think I would ever not use it, but I do tend to double-check the results with something like Google Safe Browsing (which is probably what alerted the OP) if it's a place I really want to visit.  They seem to have a much better system for rating sites in real time and getting them cleaned up before taking them off the blacklist and give me a better explanation of what was found than do the WOT ratings which too often are not explained.
Again, I agree with you that being warned by WOT is better than no warning at all.

  • Whats the best anti virus software at the moment?

I need to install virus software on my laptop, can anyone help me out with the best one to use at the moment.

I was using kaspersky internet security 2010. But due to some reason or another it wasnt getting rid of a keylogger I had downloaded from somewhere. After installing Avast! antivirus it instantly got rid of it and I shortly uninstalled Kaspersky afterwards.
Not to mention its free, the reviews on cnet give it 4.8/5 stars

Exporting photos for UHDTV or Native 4K TV, what are the best settings ? (File: Quality File: Color Space, Image Sizing and resolution)   Or in other words; How can I get the smallest files but keep good quality for display on new UHDTV

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format?

I have researched and found out that the AAC format rules over the MP3 format as fas as sound quality goes with lossy formats. Example: AAC at 128 is better than MP3 at 160 as so forth. My questions are: What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format? Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format? Does the AAC format have VBR like the MP3 format? Is there other ripping software such as dbPoweramp and Exact Audio Copy that does a better job ripping cd's in the AAC format? Please help!

    mysteryroach wrote:

It is a matter of opinion, but I suggest 256 kb/s, CBR, and leave all other settings on automatic.
Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format?
Yes. Just put them in a playlist and burn.
Does the AAC format have VBR like the MP3 format?
Yes. You will see it as an option in the Import Settings.
Is there other ripping software such as dbPoweramp and Exact Audio Copy that does a better job ripping cd's in the AAC format?
EAC does a better job of correcting errors in damaged CDs, but for normal CDs iTunes does a fine job of ripping to AAC.

best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • What are the best settings to make a DVD?

    Hi!!!
I want to make a DVD. I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. My video uses a image (i havent chosen the width x height yet because i do not know what is the best for picture quality on DVD, any advice?). I also use text which is made by clicking on Add Titles in Premiere Pro. Also i have a mp3 which plays throughout. (There is actually no moving video, just an image still, and the text I add which changes every few seconds)
My question is: For optimal picture and sound quality on DVD, what are the best settings to begin the project with? (i.e. PAL? HD?, etc). Second question is: For optimal picture and sound quality on DVD, what settings should i have when exporting? (i.e. Format: MPEG2? MPEG2-DVD? H.264? ect,   Preset: 1440 x 1080i? PAL DV High Quality? etc)
Note: after exporting the file, i will send the master to a DVD duplicating company who will put the file onto DVD for me.
    Many, many thanks!

To give you just a bit more background, for DVD-Video (well, if it's burned, it's officially DVD-ROM, but you get the picture), the Transcoding will be done to MPEG-2. For the best Audio, I would stick with PCM/WAV, which will be slightly larger, but with better fidelity. Note that with BD, you have some other choices, but fewer for DVD-Video. Also, even though MPEG Audio was optional in PAL-land, it is falling out of favor. The two choices are DD AC3 (a flavor of MPEG), and PCM/WAV, which will give you the best Audio.
With Adobe Dynamic Link, you do not need to be too concerned with the Transcoding yet. In Encore, you can choose the parameters for the Transcoding, or leave it set to Automatic and Encore will calculate the space on the disc, and come up with a very good Transcode setting. If you decide that you want to do those settings yourself, please spend some time on the Internet reading about "bit-budgeting." There are also 3rd party Transcoders, that some feel are superior to those used in the Adobe products. There are several recommendations in this forum. Again, you will want to study bit-budgeting first.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • What are the best settings in Compressor?

I generally have two main needs:
    1) 16:9 films (c. 25 mins or shorter) with sound to be screened in museums/galleries. Not HD.
    2) The same but online, just to give a flavour of my work (but pointless if it loses too much quality).
What are my best Compressor options? The films take forever to compress and I often find QT won't read them, or they come up with no sound.
I am hoping for two failsafe recommendations!
    Thanks.

    1) It all depends on what method is used for playback; if it's a DVD player, use one of the DVD presets.  If it's played back from a computer hard drive, H.264 or an MPEG-2 Program Stream should work.'
    2) For online, check with the site hosting the video to see which of the many formats they can use.  Chances are H.264 will work there, too ... but always check first.
