iPhone,
The first and second party is Apple (the maker of the device) and you (the customer who uses the device). Right now all the software on the iPhone is from Apple. A third party is anybody besides Apple and you. Most webapps are written by "third-parties", and you can create bookmarks to them.
In late February, there will be a System Developer's Kit which will allow writing third-party "native" applications that can be put on the iPhone will become possible. This link is to the announcement about the SDK:

Hope this helps,

  • What are Third Party Applications??

I just want to know what they are since i'm confused with them... They sound illegal but i've seen them in the apple store as alarm clocks.

ohhhh... Thnx so third party apps are every app apart from like 10apps made from apple??
    Yes.
then why would the alarm clock that i have need to say that it is a third party apps and needs to stay open for it to work?
It's probably saying that since it isn't an Apple application, it won't run in the background. However, with the latest update (iOS 4) it may be possible to find an alarm clock app that will be able to run in the background.

  • What are third party alternatives to Ovi Suite

I really like my Nokia E63 Smartphone, and Nokia PC Suite is usable, I'll say no more than that.
Unfortunately its replacement Nokia Ovi Suite, really is a dire application, appearing to have a UI designed by a child, and the coding done by someone committed to an asylum.
Harsh words, indeedy so, but this Ovi Suite really does bring out the worst in a person when to attempt to use it.
Enough has already been written about its short comings, so I won't waste time re-visiting...
My quest is for a suitable third part application that will do the business without the problems.
Searching around I've found two possibles, OxyCube which unfortunately just will not install its required bit on my phone, and MobilEdit which works reasonably well, but has a very dodgy .CSV import capability.
So my question here to the knowledgeable is:
Are there any other third party replacements for the Nokia offering?
    Thanks
    Ax

+1 from me on both looking for a third party app, and loathing the Nokia-as-the-centre-of-the-universe approach to coding.  Nokia 5800.
Had a torrid time with the OVI 3 update which simply doesn't do the sync'ing it promises to do, so rolled back to OVI 2 which gets stuck on insisting that I reinstall (a perfectly functioning) MS Outlook.
Since my Nokia phone is now next to useless through not giving me what I paid for, I'll also start looking at other brands.  Well done Nokia!

  • What are third party compatible DVD burners?

I can't seem to find a clear answer to this question: What is a "third party compatible" DVD burner that I can use with iMovie/iDVD?
I don't have an internal DVD burner, so I'm thinking of picking up an external one. Problem is, I don't know which ones will work. Is there a list somewhere?
Do I need a firewire burner or can I use USB 2.0?
    Thanks.

LaCie Firewire External DVD burners are good and they include Toast software.

  • What about third party apps that are duds?

I downloaded an app from the app store called Pimp My Screen and icon changer. It will not work. It was a paid app from the app store on my IPod 7.1. Does apple ever check to see if their products actually work? Rip off.

Try contacting iTunes support via the link at the bottom left.

You can also try deleting the app and then downloading it again.

  • How are the third party apps for the iPhone?

Being a long time Palm user, then moved to BlackBerry I watched the quality of third party apps really plummet due to a more restrictive development agreement.
Now considering an iPhone, I'm curious about how healthy the 3rd party app community is for iPhone, something I miss from my Palm days. From what I've heard, the development for iPhone applications is even more restrictive than for BlackBerries.
Anyone that wouldn't mind addressing one or all of these questions for me from their own experience, would be greatly appreciated.
    1) Do you use third party applications on your iPhone, or do you find the native Apple software to be sufficient?
    2) Are there alot of different choices for utilities, or do you find yourself pigeonholed to 1-2 programs.
    3) Would you say that the third party apps are "mature" that is stable, follow similar flow/integration with the phone and designed in an intuitive way?
Again thanks for anyone that chooses to help me with this. I was really disappointed with the apps available for the Blackberry. At $15-$25 dollars each, I was usually let down by the quality and selection and overall experience.

The native software is excellent and I also have apps to fill in for things not available as part of the out of the box iPhone.
    2) Are there alot of different choices for utilities, or do you find yourself pigeonholed to 1-2 programs.
If you go to the app store and browse, you'll find lots of different utilities. In some cases, there are a dozen different options that do the same basic thing and in other cases there are a couple.
    3) Would you say that the third party apps are "mature" that is stable, follow similar flow/integration with the phone and designed in an intuitive way?
Some apps are well done and others aren't. Since they are developed independently, there is variability. The apps I use most frequently seem pretty stable. It all depends on your needs.

  • What settings work in Health app without third party apps, iPhone 5s

IM looking my for the settings in health that work without third party apps on iPhone 5s.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "settings". Do you mean, what data can the Health app collect? It collects the data from the motion co-processor built into the phone. That could be cycling, steps or running.

  • My wireless earbuds work just fine, but some third-party apps play audio only through the iPod speaker even though the buds are properly connected.

My wireless earbuds work just fine, but some third-party apps play audio only through the iPod and iPhone speaker even though the buds are properly connected. Does anyone know why and is there a solution?

Assuming you are using Bluetooth headphones, do the apps have the option to use Bluetooth?
The app should have an option to select the speaker (or wired earphones) or the Bluetooth headphones.

  • Did latest iPhone update and now non of my third party apps work.  They open then close immediately.   I tried to restore but can't as my iphone wont sync with itunes now and I will loose my apps.  Also my largest app "Sat Nav" has gone.  Help ??

    Hi All
I have run into problems with my iPhone 4.  I hadn't done an update for a while so decided to get my itunes and iphone 4 up to date.  I downloaded all the latest versions.  However now non of my third party apps work and my largest one has vanished.  I try and open them and they flash up and then close again. I thought the easiest thing to do was to restore so I tried to syn my apps onto itunes so I wouldn't loose them.  However it won't let me sync the apps onto iTunes.  It ill allow me to syn the old version when I just started but since then I have bought a dozen other apps.  Can anyone help.  thanks

Well this won't work for me...
I had all of my apps and music stored in iTunes, I updated to the newest 9.2 iTunes and did a 4.0 update to my iPhone 3G all the while not noticing that EVERYTHING IN iTUNES was GONE. When I got done updating my iPhone it was late so i went to bed... Next day came back to sync everything and thats when I saw it was all gone...

did what the link said and NOW I have all my 6K+ MUSIC back but not ONE APP. The App's are completely gone from when you nav. to the location the link says... There isn't a mobile sync folder there...
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NEXT... Very Frustrated and MAD. I don't want to redownload all my apps manually. TO many to do it that way.

  • I purchased my iMac using the same (and only) Apple ID I use to purchase apps. Third-party apps update fine, but the apps that came with my iMac (iPhoto, iMovie, etc) bring up a message saying I have to log in with the account I used to purchase them.

I used my only Apple ID to purchase my iMac (Intel-based one).  I've never been able to update core apps that came with it.  I can update third party apps I've bought (like Coda), but when I try to update Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie and so on, a popup message appears saying "You have updates available for other accounts" and "Log in with the account you used to purchase this app in order to update it", or similar (see screenshot above).
The OS seems to get its updates fine - it's just the core apps from the App Store.
I've only ever had one Apple ID, so I have no idea what to do.  I went to ask the Genius bar at my local Apple store, and they couldn't help, and insisted that I must have purchased the iMac using a different account, but I definitely didn't.  There are a few posts on non-Apple forums of this happening to other people, so it must be a rare bug.
I'm a little concerned it may affect my ability to update from Lion to Mountian Lion.  Can anyone help?
    Dan

Have you done a Disk Repair and a Disk Permissions Repair?
If that doesn't resolve the problem I would suggest calling customer support about this issue as it is most likely on their (Apple's) end that the problem exists.

  • Formatting music from windows to a mac using third party app

i used a third party app so that i could download music from a pc onto my os x formatted ipod. initially it worked when i moved the music into my itunes library on my mac, but for some reason now a lot of the tracks won't play and my computer freezes if i press play on any track that originally was downloaded onto a pc. is there a way to identify where the songs came from and then delete then from the library without going through each one a seeing if it will play and then having to force quit itunes because it freezes?

From what I know, windows will not recognize the complicated data of a mac formatted device; hence not recognizing it. Macs can recognize a windows formated ipod though, so if you decide to reformat it on windows, then you can use it on both computers. If you dont though, looks like you are out of luck, sorry.
    Hope I helped.

  • Upgraded to iTunes 9.2 and iPhone 4 -- all of my third-party apps missing

I'm not exactly sure where the issue came from, but I somehow lost all of my apps as I upgraded to iTunes 9.2 and the iPhone 4 today. But I figured out what happened and *I have the solution*, which I'd like to share...
This occurred on June 24, 2010 (iPhone 4 launch day). The steps I took to upgrade to iTunes 9.2 and iPhone 4 were as such:
    1) I did a full sync and backup of my iPhone 3GS with iTunes 9.1.
    2) I upgraded iTunes 9.1.x.xx to iTunes 9.2.0.61 (the first version compatible with iPhone 4).
    3) I activated my new iPhone 4 and set it up based on my 3GS's back up data.
    4) When it was done setting up the iPhone 4, I noticed that all of the native apps and their app data were intact, but I was missing all of my third-party app store apps. Note that all the apps on my 3GS were obviously still intact.
    5) I noticed that I had zero apps in the iTunes library (at the top left under "Library"). Thus, with my 3GS plugged in, I right clicked on the iPhone in iTunes under "Devices" and selected "Transfer Purchases". This transferred all of the apps on my 3GS to the iTunes library.
    6) I plugged in my iPhone 4, and noticed that on the "Apps" tab under "Devices / iPhone name", the "Sync Apps" box was unchecked. So I checked it, and it gives you a scary message saying that all of the apps in the iTunes Library (which I had just populated in step 5) will overwrite the app data on your iPhone. I didn't have any app data on my iPhone 4, so I clicked "OK". All of the apps transferred from the iTunes Library to my iPhone 4 with all of the app data (game saves, etc) intact.
So that's my solution. I'm sure this must be happening to other people. My main piece of advice is: after upgrading to iTunes 9.2 and syncing your old phone for the last time, make sure you have apps in your App Library and "Sync Apps" is checked. If not, follow the steps above.
This same issue also happened to my friend, but he doesn't have his old iPhone 3GS to restore the app data from. If anyone has any suggestions as to how he can save his app data, please let me know. Thanks.
    Craig
