What are timecode breaks and why do they happen?

I am trying to capture a tape from a Canon GL2, and it has tons of TC breaks. I have read the previous posts on TC breaks and I think I know how to work around them, but I don't quite understand what they are and why they happen. Does it mean the tape is bad? Or did something go wrong when I recorded the footage with the camera? How do I avoid them in the future?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Everything Jerry sais, plus...
Best practice for this issue comes down the the shooter.
- Get in the habit of always rolling 5 sec. of tape before action starts and 5 seconds of tape after action ends.
- Try not to turn the camera off.
- Try not to do 'searches' on tapes that are being recorded on.
- If the camera is turned off, or you need to search back into the tape, make sure you do NOT roll past the end of the last recorded frame...preferable stop a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and begin recording there.
- If your camera is capable of generating Bars, try to record 10 seconds of bars in between scene or location changes...gives you an identifier and room to roll into already recorded TC.
-if you have to pop the tape out of the camera at any point, follow the above listed practice of cueing up to a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and start recording there to pick up continous timecode.
-try not to use 'free-run' timecode. It will make editing an absolute nightmare.

  • What are smart mailboxes and why do i need both smart and "normal" ones?

What are smart mailboxes and why do I need both smart and "normal" mailboxes?

    Hi Kingoftypos,
Thanks for that clarification. So, now it appears that the ultimate purpose of a Smart Mailbox is to point to all emails that meet the criteria in a single place, so if they are spread among several mailboxes, you will be able to see them all together. Here is an article from Apple that describes it:
A Smart Mailbox displays in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, so you don’t have to move messages between mailboxes. The messages displayed by a Smart Mailbox are based on criteria you define, and are automatically updated to include new messages that match your criteria. For example, you might create a Smart Mailbox that displays all messages found in all mailboxes from a specific sender.
If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.
So, adam, I would think that, if you had mail going to a lot of different places, and wanted to be able to see a particular set of those in a single place, you would use a smart mailbox. Maybe use the rules to direct your mail to different places to start with, but a smart mailbox to bring a set of common ones all together into a single smart mailbox?
Maybe you have Rules move your Amazon mail to an Amazon folder and your Apple mail to an Apple folder, but then you have a Smart Mailbox that contains any mail that has the word "Receipt" in the Subject line?
    Just a thought....
    Cheers,

  • What are Layers? And why do I need them?

WHAT ARE LAYERS? AND WHY DO I NEED THEM?
Layers are an essential part of Photoshop. With Layers you can separate pictures or design elements from each other, as if they are stacked on pieces of glass. With all elements separate, you can move or change them independent of each other.
Layers are used for many tasks, including improving your images' color or tone; merging two or more images in one Photoshop file; and creating Web designs and animations.

After creating the mask and applying adjustment, you can also adjust and change layer mask using selection tools or, the most common way, using brush tools.
To have a more accurate preview of what are you doing, Alt + click on the layer mask thumbnail to show the mask in the image area.
At this point, you will have a layer mask on your screen in large view, so it is easy to fine tune it, but you wont see how that affects your image.
To seean  instant preview how changes on layer mask affects the adjustments, use New Window for (name of your image) from Window > Arrange.

  • Query as Web Services!!! What are its uses and why do we need it?

What are its uses and why do we need it.. if other tools like Dashboard and crystal reports and Webi can connect to universe and create reports and Analytics...

    Hello  Rajsan Madhavarajan
Query as a Web Service (QaaWS) is a SAP Business Objects (BOBJ)  client-side tool that allows users to create and publish Web Services that can be made available over the Web.  Once these web services are created and published,  they can be consumed like any other standard Web Service in software applications including Xcelsius and Crystal Reports.   But first we have to understand what exactly is a Web Service.
    Web Service
A Web Service is a software system that supports  interoperable interaction over a network from one computer or machine to another but is more commonly defined as a client and a server communicating data over the Web using the HTTP Protocol. Using Web Services along with Business Objects allows a live connection of data to be used in applications such as Xcelsius and Crystal Reports through a semantic layer called a Universe.
Query as a Web Service (QaaWS)
The two main components in QaaWS are the Client Tool and the Server.  The QaaWS Client Tool gives the end user an easy to use wizard that allows them to create Universe queries and publish them as Web Services.  Once the QaaWS is published, any user can securely access the data that the Web Service contains as long as they have access to that server. Have a look on  image below that shows the information flow to and from the server via the client.
    Advantages to QaaWS:
Very easy to use and intuitive interface Familiar look and feel for people who have used Web Intelligence
Leverages existing Business Objects Universes Shares metadata with Web Intelligence, Desktop Intelligence and Crystal Reports
    Maintains Business Objects Enterprise Security
Allows live data feeds to be incorporated into Xcelsius Dashboards and Crystal Reports

I updated my iphone (G3) and all the apps are now gone!  What can I do and why did this happen?

Did you perform the update on a computer other than the one you normally sync to? Were the apps in the iTunes library on your computer BEFORE you performed the update?

  • What are setup tables and why do you need to run it

    Hello Gurus,
I know the steps for setting up the LO cockpit exactors.
My question is what are the parameters that you feed into the Setup table filling screen --- like the doc numbers, start date and end date.
Why do we have to run the setup tables?
If I give the start date for setup table run for SD as 08/24/06 and end time Nill and others parameters blank, then would the set up job run for ever. Is this how you set it up in production environment.
Does setup mean, bringing the data from application table to extraction structructure?

  • What are stray points and where do they come from?

    Just curious.
    CS3
    XP2.
I recently made a drawing incorporating some elements from Inventor (PDFd and placed). After finishing filling in the details, I drew a marquee around the entire drawing and noticed dimensions of the drawing where 10x what it should have been.  I zoomed out and and saw two pairs of points. one pair right, one left, were showing as selected. I tried selecting just the points and could not. After re-selecting only my drawing, they would show up.  Its like they were grouped but not.
Anyway, going to select/ object/ stray points and deleting them solved it.
What are they and where did they come from?  Obviously Illustrator recognizes they can be there because of the built-in menu allowance.

Stray points can occur in a multitude of ways. They occur much more frequently in Illustrator than other drawing programs because of its basic selection interface.
However, some programs' exports intentionally place stray points at opposite corners of the page bounds in order to convey those bounds to the importing program. (I often see this in imported DXFs.) That sounds like the kind of situation you are describing.

  • What are mapping services and why they use so much cellular data?

I previously had an iphone 5 and my monthly cellular data consumption was about 250MB.
I recently switched to an iphone 5S and the cellular data usage is about 250MB per week!
I try to monitor and reduce the usage but the mapping services in system services is always very high!
What is this? Can I reduce it?

    Mapping Services ( story ) :
In April 2011, iPhone and iPad users were surprised to discover that, not only was their device keeping track of where they’d been, it also was storing very detailed location information in a plain-text file on the phone.  The data was derived by the cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots the devices encountered, and was added anonymously to a crowdsourced database.
Apple later said the devices were keeping more information than intended due to a bug, and issued a patch that reduced the amount of data. But, because it was used to improve and speed up location services, the practice continued.
And now, in iOS 7, Apple has added a tool that lets you see what your iPhone knows about where you go.
If you’ve got an iPhone 4S or later running iOS 7, follow these steps:
    1. Go to Settings, then Privacy > Location Services.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the list of apps that use Location Services (and feel free to marvel at how many apps do!). Tap System Services.
    3. Tap on Frequent Locations, then scroll down and look at History. You’ll see at least one city there, more if you travel.
    4. Tap a city. You’ll see a list of locations you’ve visited in the city.
    5. Tap a location. You’ll see a list of the dates and times you visited that location.
Why in the world would Apple collect this kind of detail about your movements? It does so to enable features like Next Destination, found in the Notification Center, which is the screen you see when you swipe down from the top of the iOS display. Next Destination looks at your travel patterns and offers information about how long it will take to get to the next place you typically visit during the day.
If having all this location data collected by your iPhone makes you nervous, you can turn it off at Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Frequent Locations. Note that it is turned on by default, so if you don’t want your phone logging your whereabouts, you’ll need to turn it off.
The Next Destination feature is similar to one found in Google Now, which uses location and your habits to offer up useful information without your asking for it. Google Now is found in the Google Search app on both Android and iOS. On Android, you can add a Google Now widget to your home screen to make the feature more accessible.
In fact, Google collects similar information about you – and in greater detail -  if you use its location-based products. Google stores your location data on the Internet, and you can see it on any Web browser.
Make sure you’re logged into your Google account – say, through Gmail – and then go to google.com/locationhistory. You’ll see a map showing location visits for today, but click the Dashboard link at the top of the page and you’ll see this:
To turn this off, click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Location History page and choose History Settings. Then, click Disable and Save. There’s also a History Management link that lets you delete history items that have already been collected.
Location services are really an integral part of a ton of iOS apps, using the internal GPS system to add Instagram photos to a map, checkin with FourSquare or Facebook, or let your friends know where you are with one of many “on my way” apps, like Glympse or Twist.
If you’re battery is dying, however, the location services are the first thing you should turn off, as they suck up a lot of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch’s power needs, what with their background data sending and receiving and such.
Here’s how to turn them off.
Tap your Settings app to launch it, and then tap on Privacy. You’ll be able to turn the toggles OFF for any specific app that has privileges to access your GPS location by scrolling through the list and tapping them all. I do this on a fairly regular basis for both privacy and battery savings. I figure that with less apps accessing my location, the less battery power in total is being used for that function.
If you want to turn off Location Services completely, then simply tap the main toggle at the top to OFF, and you’ll stop using them. This will keep your apps that need it, like Maps or Compass, from knowing where you are, but the battery will thank you.
Follow the above steps to turn off Location Services :

  • Routers: What Are Jumbo Frames and why do I need them?

Some routers' specs specifically mention that they handle jumbo frames (with a number like 9K). I have a network with 2 iphones, two ipads, 4 computers, two networked Blu-Ray players, and 3 computers, all of which are operating simultaneously a lot of the time.
Some other companies seem to be using the fact that they support jumbo frames as part of their selling points. How do they help?
I asked Cisco Chat support about the RVS4000 and whether it supported them on both the WAN and the LAN. They said not on the WAN. They also said "
It appears under the L2 Switch tab you can input a Max Frame type.....
I don't see anything that actually says jumbo frames but I believe you can put in a value.....
after the device is setup you can navigate to the L2 Switch option and it has a Max Frame value"
I'm not sure whether this router supports jumbo frames or not. I have a short list of wired gigabit routers that I'm considering for purchase and the RVS4000 is on the list.
I need to learn more about this topic so any help or pointers to stuff to read would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for the info. I read virtually all of it. The Jumbo Frames thing sounds very tricky - and possibly detrimental. I'll have to see if Time Warner Roadrunner supports them and at what sizes. Other than for really big file transfers between machines on my network (which I don't do that often) it sounds like jumbo frames isn't going to do much for me.
It also looks like the RVS4000 is not what I want. The smallnetbuilder review was a very useful one-although it's 4 yrs old, it's still likely mostly valid.
I do some gaming at times and it sounded like the adjusting of frame sizes until all the devices in the path are the same can cause unacceptable latency. Now it seems that no matter which gigabit router I choose, I need to be sure I get one where I can disable the major frames process, and maybe enable it when I want to do hard drive backups across the network. Welcome to the gigabit ethernet world I guess.
The RV220W sounds like a nice machine, but is a lot more machine than I think I need for my network. I read a very detailed review of it on Amazon at:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A2BBGBR6ARRJQO/ref=cm_pdp_rev_more?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview#R2SCJUQOKY7EN
It also sounds like it's more complex to set up than I would like to tackle. I'm a retired electrical engineer but definitely not a skilled IT person, so plug and play simplicity is important. I understand just enough to get in trouble.
Thanks again for the links. Much appreciated.

  • Could you please tell me what are Firefox Aliases and why do have 9 of them?

In my applications folder Firefox Alias keeps appearing, I now have 9 of them. Could you please tell me what they are? Also, when I go to open a new tab the screen fills with boxes of sites I have been to previously. I do not like this, how do I stop that from happening?
    Thanks

Aliases are the same as shortcuts. You can remove the aliases without hurting anything.

I lost all of my contact with yesterdays update.  Where are they and why did this happen?

What update? There was nothing released yesterday relating to iCloud.
Where have you lost your contacts from? Your computer, your phone, iCloud.com?
If they are no longer in any of those places, you'll need to restore them from your most recent backup.

  • HT5085 I have found that at least 3 music videos that I had previously purchased are not available in my I-tunes music video list.  I paid for them over a year ago, why are they not accessible, and why did they just disappear from my lists?

I have found that at least 3 music videos that I had previously purchased are not available in my I-tunes music video list.  I paid for them over a year ago, why are they not accessible, and why did they just disappear from my lists?

Have you deleted anything from your iTunes library ? Have you checked to see if they are still on your computer, but not listed in your iTunes library ?
If not then do they show in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for redownloading ? If they don't show there and others do and they are still in your country's store, then check to see if they are hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
If they are no longer in your store for redownloading (or you aren't in a country where music videos can be redownloaded) then you will need to copy them back from your backup of your library/downloads.
