What are we worth?

I am posing this question for two reasons. I am curious to
see what a CF
developer is worth to a company and also because I might be
switching dev
jobs to another company that is going to switch from ASP to
CF and would
like to know what I should be asking for to keep in line with
fair market.
So, where is everyone from and what do they make? (Employed
professionals
only, please.)
I am in Ann Arbor, MI and I am making $50k with full
benefits.

Agreed, $50K is too low.
And you don't necessarily have to be in a major center to
pull in a good buck (though it certainly doesn't hurt). A lot
depends on the company in question. I work for a mid-sized bank (so
they've got a few bucks), and though we're two hours outside of any
real population center, the compensation is most agreeable.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:
    Leopard system requirements:

But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

What version are you on now ? If you are on 5.1.0 then the update to 5.1.1 is very small - from here :
Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase
If you are on an earlier iOS version then you will get the intermediate updates as well e.g.

  • What are these two powerbooks worth roughly?

I have a 15" 1.67 low res power book, here are some basic stats
1gb memory, 80 gb hd, 10.5.7. MS office, then all standard.
Excellent condition. No issues whatsover, great screen.
And a customer wants to trade some of my labor for this one
    15" 1.5 power book
512 mb ram, 80 gb, I think its running leopard, has MS office, needs charger (no big deal, can get one on ebay)
Im thinking about taking the labor trade (for a couple hundred off the bill), and selling both on ebay or maybe craigslist. Then getting a high res (maybe 17") or maybe macbook pro.
Anyone been paying attention to what they're worth? Are the High res models that much better? Should I get a Pro?
    Thanks

The high-res models are better in that they are the last ones Apple made and have all the bugs and such worked out of them. Also, the screen resolution is a huge PLUS.
I got a 15-inch 1.5GHz on eBay and after doing some tests, realized I'd have more space with the high-res 1.67GHz model and improved specs like faster RAM and a Double-Layer SuperDrive.
So, I did get that 1.67GHz model and sold the 1.5GHz to my friend.
Of course, I've since upgraded to a MacBook Pro unibody (Late 2008). It's all up to you and based on your, one, needs and work, and two, your budget. You can even get an older MacBook Pro which would be a huge bump over your PowerBook G4.

  • VOTE FOR YOUR BEST ADDED PLUGIN.   WHAT ARE SOME PLUGINS WELL WORTH THE $$

Always like to see peoples opinions about added plugins for logic pro.
WHAT ARE SOME GREAT PLUGINS WELL WORTH THE MONEY?
TYPE OF SOUND CAN BE SYNTHS/EFFECTS WHATEVER YOU LIKE.

i've stopped using external plugins cause it always ended up with some issues :
    - plugins would have some bugs
    - plugins would need to be updated all the time, and the new version would mess up with my songs
    - automation would not work properly
    - settings would not have been saved properly with the song ...
of course i'm exagerating but :
    - logic already has plenty of plugins all sounding well and covering everything you need
    - i don't master half of them yet
    - there's always a way to achieve the same sound of an other plugin / technic, may it be less easy
    - any of my songs could be opened with any Logic Pro 7 in the world
    - i feel like plugins are the new video games. my friend don't play video game anymore, they download plugins and rave about the latest ones. i don't need plugins to get creative, and when i have an idea of a sound or a song, i've never thought "**** i need reaktor" or anything.
    just my two cents !

  • I'm so screwed....What are my options?

My iPhone fell out of my pocket tonight and almost completely flushed down the toilet....I got it out and now it's buried inside a bowl of rice inside a ziploc baggie BUT....
There are no other phones available right now. It's only been a few hours but I feel sooo lost without it. Its my alarm clock, I listen to it to fall asleep at night, and actually...I'm on vacation and I'm now without my contacts or anything.
What are my options? I'm not a rule breaker so I don't want to get a unlocked one...too scared of "the man". LOL
    Any other ideas out there?
    WWYD?

Is there an AT&T store around? AT&T will sell you a new, standard, bottom of the barrel cell phone for $40.00 that you can return for a full refund within 30 days (plus, there's no activation fee). Apparently, AT&T has a plan in place for those that are without a cell phone b/c of repair issues. I'd just let them know that Apple is currently fixing your iPhone and that they're out of stock and could not give you a loaner iPhone while yours is being repaired. It's worth a shot. Plus, if you're a good customer (been with them for a while, always pay your bill on time, etc.), they should help you out... Hope this helps .

  • My iPhone was stolen and I have contacted the police who are using the meid number to locate.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?

My iPhone was stolen.  I used Find My iPhone app to lock it and display a message.  The phone has not connected to the internet to locate it.  I contacted the police and they have taken my meid number.  How does this work and what are my chances of getting the phone back?  Are there other ways the theif can use it.  I was told once they put in a new sim card and use it, whatever software the police have, it will show up.

Honestly? In the US (I can't speak to other countries, though I doubt it works much differently in a lot of the world) The police took your report and filed it either in their computers or, on paper. They will now not think of this again. The only time it will cross anyones mind is if, in the course of entering information into evidence about items recovered or seized at a crime scene, the serial number of an iPhone that was found/seized happens to match yours, in which case you will be contacted.
The police in the US can and will do nothing to 'blok' the phone and it's not worth their time to try and locate it unless you know for a fact that it was stolen by a big time drug lord, master criminal, or some other such prime target and they can get a court order to track the location of the phone in order to locate this individual for your own purposes.  If they do that, they'll probably keep him under surveilance for a year or so before they act.
Basically, the police don't care about your phone. If they find it, they will give it back to you. They are not, however, going to go looking for it. They have better things to do.
I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • IPhone 3G - thinking of getting one but... what are the potential issues?

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 3G because:
    1. I've been writing iPhone apps with a friend of mine (already have two in the app store) and I think I'm probably the only iPhone developer in the world who doesn't actually own an iPhone himself. My friend and partner in this venture has worked extra time doing actual testing on her original iPhone (and we've had other beta testers too), but there is only so much I can do in the simulator. I can't develop multi-touch or accelerometer features without my own device. And I feel I shouldn't put the entire hardware testing burden on her.
    2. I like the iPhone browser and the ability to use apps and a lot of other aspects of the iPhone.
    3. I live in Japan, and switching from my AU cell phone to the iPhone is actually a bargain here. There is no money down, and the payment plans start at like $25/month to a max of about $68/month. So it's actually cheaper here than in the U.S. Even adding in the $10-$15 extra charge for 24 months until the phone itself is paid off, it's no more expensive than my current cell phone. And I can keep my current phone number.
So it would seem to be a no-brainer. I should just walk over to my nearest Softbank store and get one, right?
The only thing holding me back is this - every time (and I mean every single time with no exaggeration) that I have ever purchased an Apple portable device, including every single one of my many MacBooks and MacBook Pros over the years and the iPod nano 3G I bought last year, have had problems that needed immediate care and replacement or servicing and, in the case of the iPod 3G that awful "tilted LCD" problem that after 3 exchanges I had to have the consumer affairs office in Tokyo arrange with Apple for me to get a refund on.
I love the systems, I am using my MacBook Pro right now as I write this message (already been repaired twice and the trackpad is acting funny again - glad I have AppleCare), but I dread the mental stress of dealing with getting my new out-of-the-box Apple products fixed. I feel they have quality checking problems with certain of the product lines.
I just know that there is going to be something really annoyingly wrong with the iPhone 3G as soon as I turn it on - like obviously dead pixels, or a tilted LCD like with the iPod nano 3G, or some weird color discolorations, or something loose and jiggly like with my MBP battery cover or ... I don't know... something. It's just happened too often with me to not be wary.
So my question is this. If the Softbank store lets me turn on and check out the iPhone before buying it, what are the things I should look out for?
Are there common, well-known issues with the iPhone 3G that I can check for, similar to the tilted screen issue on the iPod nano 3G?
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
I would like to get an iPhone. I just want one with no problems out-of-the-box.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    doug

But if it is something more subtle like "the colors seem wrong" or "the screen is not set straight" it will take more arguing. And I can't stand arguing about stuff like that just to get a good phone.
So... What were the problems you had with your phone?
Well the only reason I got the IPhones was because it was a birthday gift,And the first phone I got was the 16G in white so when we got home My screen was jumping so I said okay maybe if I power my phone off and than cut it back on maybe it will started to work a little better,While it didn't I just made thing worse My screen was only jumping it wouldn't come back on after that,So I was so mad cause we had to drive a 138 miles to get my phone and than my cousin came over and she have the same phone I had just got.But her phone look like she had it for some years the white on the back of the phone had turned a off white.
So we had to drive other 138 miles there and back for me to get other phone and when I made it to the Apple store I didn't know you suppose to call and make appt before you come up there about your phone. So I'm standing up there telling them that I just came yesterday and drove a 138 miles here and back and I just had to turn around and do it again today. So they went on and seen me and ask me what was going on with my phone. So I told them as they can see it was not coming on no more.
So they exchange my IPhone and I didn't get the same color due to how my cousin white IPhone was looking like,So I got a black IPhone instead.
So the new phone I got was working so good and than about two weeks later my phone would blink on and off and it would freeze on you during call's are anything. So you already know what I had to do again I had to drive other 138 miles there and back and I was not happy about that at all.So this time before I went I made appt that morning to come and they told me to come around 200pm but for me to try to be there at least ten minutes early. So I made it there around 145pm they didn't get to me still around 315pm.So when they final call me to go talk to someone about what's going on with my phone. They ask me for my receipt and I let them know I didn't have it cause they didn't give it to me cause yale told me I didn't need it cause yale was going to send it to my email address.
So they went to try to look up my email address,That took them other 30 minutes to find it,But they finial found it in there system. So they went on and exchange my phone again with no problem at all.
So this phone I got was doing so good, I really thought my trouble was all over still I saw a black line running down my screen of my phone. So I had to get on the phone with apple again so I can make other appt for the 3rd time,So I can go up there and bring this phone so they can look at it,Cause I thought maybe I was seening something are it suppose to be on my phone and I didn't know,But to come to find out it didn't suppose to be on my phone so they had to replaces my phone for the 3rd time.
So I bent haveing this phone That I got now about 3 months now and I got to tell you I went through **** and back to get this phone and it's really doing good really love the phone so much I'm so glade that I didn't give up on this phone because I was haveing so much bad luck with getting a IPhone I was about to give up but I am so glade that I kept trying. It really is a great phone to have it have so much on this phone I love it.I just hope I don't have no more problem down the line cause I don't want to go through this again.
I feel were you are coming from cause I wouldn't want nobody to go through what I went through try to getting my phone.
But I'M telling you,it might be worth you going through this at the end..The TV on this phone is so unbelievable I'M telling you,you going to love it.Before I go to sleep at night I listen to my i pod on my IPhone and I love it that's how I go to sleep at night are I might watch a movie that I have on my phone at night. It's a great phone to have all the way around I give it a ten.
And other thing you said you don't like to arguing sometime you just have to do that.you and me have so much in common cause I don't like that my self,I feel like why should I have to raise my voices to get my point a cross that's just crazy to me.
So how long do yale have to exchange something were you stay.

  • What are the system requirements to develop ipad apps?

So I'm in the Apple store with $10k burning a hole in my pocket. I am a windows developer and now want to start developing mobile apps for the ipad and iphone that will go as far as magazines with video.
But no-one has a clue what system I need. The only thing they will say is...anything that runs snow leopard.
Well, that's a bit of an issue. I need something with some obvious horsepower in ram and on the harddisk. Since apple manages memory and code differently than a windows machine, I have no idea what to buy. Do I need a dual processor or not?
So I'm in the store and I register online to the ios sdk, because they are quoting a readme document that details the full system requirements. But it's nowhere to be found. I am then told that I have to download the whole sdk to get access to this readme document. Funny, but I haven't bought the system yet to download it to.....chicken and egg, right?
So can someone out there please tell me how much it's going to cost to get into the game, to create the magazines with video content, similar to National Geographic? I don't want to buy some cheap leopard machine only to find out that I can't upgrade the memory or that I have to get a different machine because what I bought was inadequate for my applications, because it wasn't fast enough to process etc....
To develop a magazine with video and photo content, similar to National Geographic, what system do I need to purchase, and what are the exact specs on memory and processors etc....
    thanks!

I know nothing about iOS; however, the best machine, IMO, would be the new 27" i7 iMac. Get 3rd-party RAM to go to 16 GB, and get the video card update. Whether or not you want an SSD is a personal choice. For me, it's not worth the cost, just get a 2 TB internal HD. That's all the hand-holding I can offer.

  • What are the main causes of slowdown (long term)?

I've had my MacBook for about 3½ years now, and it's starting to slow down. (Hardware specs are in sig.)
Yup, I know it's normal. It's happened with every computer I've owned, regardless of platform.
*_WHAT I CURRENTLY DO ABOUT IT_*
I routinely run Maintenance (http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/maintenance.html), a free app that—yep, you guessed it!—performs maintenance on your Mac. It uses a mix of maintenance scripts that are built-in to OS X (OS X runs them silently, but this allows them to be run on demand), and some of its own methods for cleaning a Mac to keep it running smoothly.
I've found that Maintenance does help—I definitely recommend it!—but the older my MacBook has become, it seems the less Maintenance can do to mitigate the slowdown that comes with age.
    *_MY CURRENT BELIEF_*
I don't think it's because the hardware is old by today's standards, because in my experience if you reformat any machine it will operate significantly faster, even after restoring all of the software that was removed by the format.
I've become increasingly suspicious about the hard drive's free space's effect on a system's performance. I've always known that it has a noticeable effect—less swap space for virtual memory—but I'm beginning to wonder if the effect of a mostly-full hard drive is much more than I have previously imagined. Just a feeling.
    *_MY QUESTIONS_*
*#1: What are the leading causes of slowdown (long term)?*
*#2: What are the solutions to each of the above problems?*
    • acknowledging that there may not be a solution to every problem, and
    • some solutions may solve a problem “more completely” than others

    • I was under the impression that Disk Utility's “Repair Disk” would fix all non-permissions-related errors (other than physical damage, obviously). If they can be fixed by a backup-reformat-restore, then I take it they are software (filesystem) based problems. If so, why can't software solve the problem without a reformat?
Disk utility can and does repair permissions and basic disk errors. However it does not rebuild directory data.
    • How exactly do directory structure errors happen, and what other consequences do they have (if any)?
The article on alsofts website should help
    What is directory damage?
It is worth noting that in the future when Mac OS X support the ZFS disk format directory damage will be a thing of the past.
    however as you said
Yep, I'm at 11.2% free disk space. Thanks for the info!
I think this is your main issue. Try moving your itunes and movie to an external drive then see how your mac performs.
Also a good way to reclaim some space is to delete all the language localisations you dont use. It is amazing that iWeb alone can install a few 100megs of foreign language templates that you will never use.
I used to use Mike Bombich's delocalizer to do this but that app is not longer available so I use monolingual now.
edit, as you have macbook you are lucky in that it is really straightforward to install a bigger internal hard drive.
You can now get 5000GB 2.5 inch sata hard drives. You could take out the old drive hook that up to a usb to sata cable, install a bigger hard drive. then connnect the usb cable to your mac. Then boot from your Leopard Disk then use disk utility clone your old drive onto your new drive.

  • What are you supposed to do instead of Adobe flash when you hit a site that requires it while using iphone?

New to iphone and first time using the web I get a message that I can't view a page because Apple blocks Adobe Flash. There seems to be some big story behind this, but what are you supposed to do to view those sites? Sorry if there is an obvious answer somewhere but I'm muddling my way through all of this!
    Thanks,

Nothing unless they have an HTML only option you can click on the bottom of the page. However a page that requires flash only is most likely that of a company or business with heavy marketing content. Most websites with useful content either don't base their entire homepage on flash or have a mobile version for smartphones. So if you're visiting company or movie websites just do it on your computer. Apple and now adobe considers that the battery hit for flash animations is not worth it for phones. Most flash content is pure advertising rubbish anyway. I always install Adblock on all my browsers and barely see any flash except for videos and websites where the flash is not advertising.

  • What are the specs of the audio output in iMovie?

Using  iMovie on iPad2, what are the audio specs for the final movie output options (HD1080p, HD720p, etc.)?  Does my 16/44 WAV or ALAC audio remain as, or is it converted?

I don't have the new iPad, so I can't say if it saves up to 1080P.
But I would assume when you save to the camera roll it will save it as 1080 video.
On the iPhone 4, and older iPad it saves a 720 video, but that is the source it gets.
But I can answer about the audio.
IMovie iOS will encode the audio and video in the same format the device records.
So it will save the video as H264, and embed audio as AAC.
    These are compressed formats.
You do lose some quality in the final output.
I find this is minimal, and well worth the loss for the ability to edit on the go.
    Hope that helps.

  • Buying New Phone but Contract  can't yet what are my options???

Okay I dropped my phone in some water and had to find a replacement it is a razor but being it was given to me there are issues with it... The phone changes settings on its own and I can't access VM called Verizon and they can't help with changing it and the one that is in the phone is unknown. Talke with Verizon and then Tech Support and they did nothing and said they have no way to know what it is did a master reset and so on.
So here is my question being the contract the phone is under does not allow new phones till December and I can't extend the contract being it is a business phone what are my options? From what I learned buying just a phone from Verizon is a costly one, and if you buy one from an online source the two I got where prepay only and not able to be used on an existing contract.
If I take my replacement used phone to a Verizon Store can they get the Pin number out of? I know they are there to sell you a new phone and want you to extend your contract . The cost of a "NEW" Phone is in the hundereds of dollars when you get it for next to nothing when you sign a contract.
Is there any good place I can get a "New Phone and reactivate it as a replacement and know what the pins are being the one I have now though used Verizon can't not hop[ena dn since it turns off the ringer now and then I miss calls and get vms I can get.
Any suggestions or just go and buy a new phone whatever the best cost is and be done with this???
ANy information on what I can do seems that Verzion can only help so far via the phone and going to a store from what I have experienced and heard is requiring an contract extension and then you get a new phone for a better price. Which again I can not do.
Just looking for some good information on wat the options are???
    MikeMich

Thanks, Looks like I am stuck with the current phone even though no one at Verizon can assist me in getting the pin for the vm feature. As for ebay I contacted 2 sellers that stated their phones were good to be used on Contract the first one I got I called attempted to activate it and they told me it could only be used as a "PrePaid" Phone. I had to return it and the seller want me to end the transaction as if his listing was valid even though it stated could be used on a existing contract. Being he was also in Michigan I got it within a few days but then had to return it. Seems many list their phones like this but when you contact them and ask they kind of side step it and the auction ends. This seller had good feedback maybe because some don't leave any because of the same issue. I looked at whast the phones are listed at an 300 + unless you sign an additional  2 years which I can't do being it is a company phone and paying twice is also not worth it using it as a prepaid phone for 6 months...
Looks like they got you anyway so I will just have to continue getting vms and no access and hope the phone lasts until they can get new ones...
Sad fact is there should be a better way to get a replacement phone. Since I don't know any Verizon Dealers when I had another carrier the guy was great he would do anything including rebuild a doa phone with parts he collected as people upgrade but at Verizon they just want you to "upgrade" and "extend" the contract Which I am not the admin person to make that decision
Guess you have to know someone and I don't...
Such is life these days...At least for me....
