  • What are your favorite backup apps?

I am looking for a simple to use backup app. I have never used a backup app with windows or Mac's before so just looking for something simple and effective. I have looked around and saw that Intego had one backup program but they mostly have security apps. So I did not know if it was worth it. Thanks for the feedback in advance! Oh, just so you know I do not have a external harddrive right now and was wondering how safe it really is using programs that upload to the net.

I have read many reviews on exteral harddrives and I think I found one. Does anyone have any feedback, or what do you think?
Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB 3.5" External Hard Drive and here is a link.

  • What are your favorite U.S. cities to travel to?

Can't speak for Chicago, but my favourite city to either live in or visit since I've been in the US is Seattle - by far. Always something going on, great food. And football (Sounders!)

I am heading to Chicago tomorrow to visit friends and the countdown is in full swing...I've only been to Chicago when it was freeeeezing, so I am very much looking forward to spending time on the water this time around! My mom is a flight attendant, so I've grown up traveling around the U.S., and so far, I'd say my two favorite cities (aside from Austin, where I live) are Chicago (even in the snow it was absolutely amazing) and San Diego. Nothing like the energy of a metropolitan city or the calmness of the beach. What are your favorite U.S. cities to travel to?PS. If you have any "must-do" recommendations while I'm in Chi-Town, I'm all ears! =)

  • What's your favorite iPad app?

I'm just wondering what your favorite iPad app and why? I don't have a favorite yet because I haven't got my iPad yet! I have downloaded tons of apps so I will add my favorite as soon as I know. I would love to hear from others what their favorite app is and "why" is optional.
    SG

i can't decide between these three:
_*iTeleport for iPad*_, because it lets me remote control any of my Macs from anywhere in the house.
StreamToMe, because i can watch my movies and tv shows anywhere in the house.
eyeTV, because it lets me watch tv anywhere in the house.

  • What are your favorite apps/new features you like after the 2.0 upgrade?

I discovered one feature by mistake, after finally getting my iPhone going again! I pressed the top button and home button at the same time once and saw a white flash on the screen! It turns out it works like a print screen button!! Very cool! Whatever you see on your iPhone, you can save directly to your photos, just press those two buttons simultaneously once until it flashes! If you guys already knew about this, I apologize. Please post any other favorite new features or apps here!! Thanks.

Well the update worked fine for me and one thing I love is that I can access the app store using the Edge network & not just via wi-fi. but if i can access the app store over the edge network then why not allow users to access the itunes store over the edge network as well? either way i'm happy. also, i liked the fact that when i tested the "locate me" feature in maps that the iphone prompted me for permission. that's a great security feature so that other ppl can't try to access your phone remotely or something and try to determine your location w/o your permission.

  • What are your favorite apps?

I just got the iPhone 3G S Friday and this is my 1st iPhone. Can't believe how many apps there are. I just wanted to know what everyones favorite apps are.

I've deleted more apps than I have kept. Just download and try 'em on for a bit. It doesn't take long to try them out. It's part of the fun of the iphone.
Some of my favs that I've kept and use regularly are flashlight, bump, iWant, Urbanspoon, ihandy level, soduku, and pandora.
My kids grab my phone and play FS5 Hockey, tap tap and reversi.

  • What's your favorite FREE app?

So far, I've only downloaded free apps, and those which were the most highly-rated. Here's my casual "top 10" listing ... there are SO many good ones, but I really love the first three. I was blown away by ABC Player the first time I booted it up ... it's gorgeous! These apps really make the iPad standout ... I'd rather use these apps more than those on my desktop because they're so much "prettier"!
    1) ABC Player
    2) Yahoo! Entertainment
    3) USA Today
    4) NPR (National Public Radio)
    5) eBay
    6) WeatherBug
    7) Kindle for iPad
    8) IMDb
    9) Kayak
    10) Marvel Comics

Wanted to tell you about a great FREE sticky notes app I found yesterday morning. It's called ABCNotes. I'm a notes app junkie and it seems like I've bought most of the notes and sticky notes apps in the App Store over the last 2 years. But this is the best little sticky notes I've found. Don't know how long it will be FREE but I highly recommend it. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
I agree on most of the same free apps you've listed, especiallyWeatherBug, Kindle and NetFlix. (Oops, NetFlix was not on your list, but on the list of the other poster.)

  • What are your favorite sound libraries?

I picked up Garritan Personal Orchestra and I think it’s great. I also just got a Scarbee Bass from Native Instruments which is very cool. But I’m also looking at the Trilian Bass too. So, what’s the best bass?…drums?…guitar?…piano?…etc.
I’m doing mostly reggae and I like a very clean dub sound. A Sly & Robbie library would be nice!
    Thanks :o)

  • What's your favorite web app?

I'm looking for good web apps to put on my home screen.

If you are in Boston, Cambridge, New York or San Francisco you might find http://i.zami.com handy. It's an irreverent Yellow Pages by and for iPhone users with a novel way of listings stores by street. Also a nifty directory of the recent Macworld Expo.

  • What are your favorite JavaFX 2.0 books?

Assume you wanted to take an academic approach to learning JavaFX 2.0 from its fundamentals up to more advanced topics. Which books are available that you would choose to learn from? Please do not include online tutorials or books that have not yet been released.
    Thanks.

JavaFX 2.0 by Example is the only published book I know of http://www.apress.com/9781430242574, I have not read it, so I don't know about it's quality. The title would not seem to apply to "take an academic approach to learning JavaFX 2.0 from its fundamentals up to more advanced topics".
I know you don't want unreleased books mentioned, but still . . . Pro JavaFX 2.0 platform is probably the most promising and closest to what you are looking for http://www.apress.com/9781430268727 (due to be released next month). You may be able to get an early release electronic copy for review if you contact one of the authors (author blog here: http://learnjavafx.typepad.com/weblog/).

  • What are your favorite external harddrives?

Am buying a backup drive, and am trying to decide which one is best.
Anyone using the newertech v3? Do you like it?
    Or, OWC Elite Pro?
    Thanks

I've recently bought an external hard drive for my iMac and have done lots of research on it.
My choice came down to [Western Digital My Book Studio (WDH1Q10000N)|http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VZCEU8/103-8905802-9945460?i e=UTF8&tag=amfitedirectf-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B000VZCEU8] - this is a 1 TB drive at 7200 RPM, SATA/300 with triple interface options - USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800!
WD made this model specifically for Macs, the drive is even HFS+ (Apple) formatted. I've also seen this drive being sold in Apple retail stores!
The main purchase decision in my case was the three interface option - as FW800 gives you the best possible speed! I've tested out the drive by hooking it up to USB, and FW800 in order to measure the performance ratio - the speed at FW800 was blasting fast, compared to snail USB speed... Another important issue for me was the automated power saving feature (e.g. drive turns off automatically as you power down the computer). In addition, this drive is dead quiet, you almost cannot hear it working!
However you'll need to update its firmware (just download and run a small software from WD site) before you use it with Leopard - other than that, no other cons for the product... I've had this drive for the last couple of months and I'm more than happy with it!
The runner up in mu decision was [1 TB LaCie Big Disk Extreme|http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T9B46G/103-8905802-9945460?ie=UTF8 &tag=amfitedirectf-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=B000T9B46G] drive. LaCie compares with WD drive feature wise, however I didn't go for it due to a slightly higher price and it was not aesthetically pleasing as WD (which is a very much subjective opinion)... But more importantly WD extends 5 year warranty for its drive compared to 3 year warranty on LaCie product...

  • What are your top 3 favorite AIR Native Extensions? (any OS)

What are your top 3 favorite AIR Native Extensions?
    OS is irrelevant.

From looking at most of the threads posted in these forums, people generally come here seeking help with issues they are having while developing an AIR application, hence the name of this community, "Adobe AIR Development". If your question isnt answered within 3 days that doesn't appear to be seeking help with an issue or potential bug, doesn't mean that AIR is dead. People are using this forum everyday as indicated by there being new or active threads everyday. Most questions that people answer or have interest in, are related to iOS and Android development.

  • What is your favorite note taking app for handwriting to text?

What is your favorite note taking app for handwriting to text?

I use WritePad - feel it does a good job. However, I must admit that I didn't try any others... at the time, it had the best reviews of any handwriting recognition app (in fact, as I recall, it might have been the only one to do recognition).

  • What's your favorite of styling hyperlinks?

    Hi,
what's your favorite way of styling hyperlinks?
Right now I've colored mine C=100 M=100 Y=0 Y=0 and made them underlined. I feel the underlining is a bit too harsh on my overall design. Then again if I don't underline them, how are people suppose to know they're links?
Spelling out URLs is just not an option. Unless I use TinyURL? They say their links will last forever but who knows for sure?

That is a question about cultural expectations -- I can't answer that confidently.  The check mark that so often is used in US software to signal 'OK' (as in the spelling checking function where I edit this message) signals 'Error' to me -- and when it is shown in green (as Borland Software did at one point, and as Adobe does here) it signals both 'Error' and 'OK', and produces a kind of 'pulling-both-ways' effect that isn't too pleasant -- to me. I'm not sure I can come up with something that works for you.
The dialog bubbles may work -- though to me the carry overtones of a footnote or an endnote. But they pretty clearly seem to signal 'more info elsewhere', and that's definitely a step in the right direction.
I would be looking for something like a bent arrow -- perhaps Unicode U+21AA (↪), or perhaps something similar with a double arrow (Unicode U+21D2, ⇒), except I'd like it to have a similar curve at the left, half suggesting a 'click here to go elsewhere'. (Wingdings 3, character code 0xCA, is close.) But I could probably go for 0x58 in WIngdings 3, rotate it 90 degrees to the right, and perhaps tweak the small box into two smaller boxes of unequal size, suggesting movement.
Or perhaps just something that suggest a 'click here' -- some of the simpler designs in Altemus Bursts, or Altemus Pinwheel or Altemus Stars might work.
I would like something that tempted the reader into testing, and so encourage learning-by-doing. That would be helped by a similar symbol going the other way to indicate the 'back' of a web browser.  Arrows help here -- they show a direction. Other designs -- bursts -- won't be a easily understood: what would be a reverse burst?.And what symbol would be used at the target end of the dialog bubbles to suggest 'go back'? (Added: perhaps a quad or square signalling 'end'?)
Arrows seem safer. Even guillemets might work, as long they won't be misread as quotes of some kind. Guillemets in a circle? There are some such glyphs like that in Wingdings. The standard 'fast forward' and 'fast backward'  glyphs (in Webdings, say) may also work.
Actually ... this is the kind of problem I'd might want to suggest for a small project for a class for typeface designers.

  • What's your favorite?

What's your favorite Screen Capture program and why? I'm looking around and need some opinions.

I use the Grab application in the Applications/Utilities folder.
The keyboard commands in the Finder work as well:
    Shift-Command-3 - Save picture of screen as a file;
    Control-Shift-Command-3 - Copy picture of screen to the clipboard;
    Shift-Command-4 - Save picture of selected area as a file;
    Control-Shift-Command-4 - Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard;
but I can never remember those keyboard shortcuts and have assigned a keyboard shortcut to call up the Grab application, that does all those and more (e.g., Capture Window; Capture Timed screen).
