What are your thoughts on the new Mavericks upgrade?

I currently have Snow Leopard - just upgraded to that in the not so recent pass because needed to do that in order to be able to view photos with my new Canon camera.  I did upgrade to the iTunes 11.0.1 when I saw the flashing popup list it as a software upgrade, even though all I use it for is to convert songs from Garage band to aiff files and to import podcasts from the internet.  Thought I would need it possibly in the future.  As long as it didn't mess me up with the above, I was okay with it.  However, I did not like having to relearn how to handle playlists.  As you can see I operate on what you probably would call an elementary, basic level and don't like things that would some how "mess up" what I have finally gotten used to.  Is Mavericks going to be like Windows upgraded OS systems which always seem to drop support for older software it previously supported?  I had hoped that going to Apple from Windows would save me from that for longer periods of time.
An additional problem I have just encountered is that suddenly I can no longer access my bank account online.  Was told that the possible reason for this was that Apple has not kept up with upgrading its security, and, therefore, the bank would not consider it safe anymore.  Thoughts??????  [I finally was able to work around this issue by downloading Firefox and using that successfully.]
Would appreciate any comments.

you said it brother   !!!
This ***** big time...
what was  more natural that look for music with cover flow, the same way you look for LP in a store or CD at home. Steve Jobs shown that in a presentation !!!! IF I RECALL.

  • What are your opinion on the new mac pro

I feel while radical its too limiting thereby loosing fuctionality. But I also knw how the iSheeps would follow their iSheperd blindly. There making this kind of thunderbolt for everything the norm. I also know that the PC companies brought this on themselves they failed to innovate followed intel and nvidia to blindly with there xeons and quadro. The 3 major pc makers market professional workstations that you would probaly sell ur kidney to get one we have the z820 while very powerful its just 2 xpensive. Let's take for example the imac is the best bang for d buck most beautiful all in one if hp had used say a normal 3770k and a gtx 680m 4gb dat would have brought the price of the z1 down drastically. Let's say d average joe wants to be an editor, compositor, colorist. if u goole pc workstations hp z820 and dell T7600 would pop up but they are dam so xpensive hp consumer PCs are garbage. If there is onething apple knows the average pro does not want to be bothered with specs. I think the pc industry brought this on themselves. Wat of the smaller custom builder they focused so much on gaming big megatron design like cases with all the talk of FPS is every thing. My only prayer is that asus, msi gigabyte should stand up aganist apple and start releasing sexier designs, unless I fear even adobe is not safe cos most editors would gradually drfit back to FCPX sad wen inferior products triumphs a superior one. Pls drop ur thoughts also ur opnions as editors in your location the general trend. I hate to be locked in a garden where I am told this is what I need. I love choices.

The 2 biggest problems with the new Mac Pro are the complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion and the Proprietary GPU modules. What happens when those Fire Pro cards are EOL and new GPU's are available. Will Apple go to any of the GPU manufacturers and get newer modules manufactured. Considering the applications that are moving to GPU processing, that was really a very bad idea simply because of the Minimum order quantity Apple will have to make to run another module. Apple will not be able to pull from the general video card supply which means they will be solely responsible for any production numbers required to manufacture to begin with. I personally expect this to be a major limitation as time goes on.
The complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion really was bad idea and not ready for prime time. TB2 has the total bandwidth of a PCI-E Gen 2 5x. That is the entire pipe available to pump any video output data, high performance storage, I/O devices, and any number of devices available as time goes on especially video cards. Those trying to GPU process through that pipe are going to find that latency is way to much a problem to get that done. If Lightpeak was out and had the bandwidth of PCi-E Gen 2 or Gen 3 16X then I would say great. There is just to small a pipe and to much device moderation at the TB controller to do this now. The major problem that will develop from this later is when Lightpeak is out for the PC and devices start moving there. Where will Apple be with the Mac Pro when it's entire expansion is legacy in 1 to 2 years. As a final note Thunderbolt 2 is just Thunderbolt 1 with 1 bidirectional channel in stead of 2 unidirectional. This is not a major improvement over the original.
The final consideration though not a major problem yet is the limit to 6 Core Xeons. This is likely due to the heat the 8 Core Xeons generate combined with a centralized cooling design. One of the major reasons to get a Dual Xeon is the 8 Core CPU options. Without that then there really is far less reason to get a Dual Xeon over a single 6 core and eventually 8 core workstation. This is a sacrifice that will reveal more later than now.
Considering the Mac Pro is meant to be the flagship platform for Apple's Pro market, there are really way to many limitations on this one to compete with the PC equivalents. There is only so much OSX will add to any system.

It sounds like it might be the Airport-related kernel panics that I and some others have had. Mine were fixed completely by a logic board replacement.
To narrow the problem down, I found that I could test by downloading large files, many at a time, and get a kernel panic while on Airport, usually within a few minutes, always within an hour. Downloading the same large files while connected via Ethernet wouldn't result in a kernel panic. I could stay online for 24 hours on Ethernet, keeping the computer active by loading pages with webcams (that automatically refresh periodically) without ever getting a kernel panic, while I couldn't connect via Airport for anywhere near that length of time without getting a kernel panic. So I was as certain as one can be that the problem was caused by Airport.
After doing some basic troubleshooting (resetting the PMU, repairing permissions) and even an erase and reinstall of Mac OS X, I called AppleCare with this information and described what I had tested. I would recommend doing the same to narrow down the problem and, if it's the same Airport-related kernel panic issue I had, arrange for a repair.

  • Better battery comparison - what are your thoughts.

Most people are judging their battery usage by times of day. I want comparisons by usage. Go to settings/general/usage and it will tell you the usage since "time since last full charge". What are your times....Mine are for today since I charged overnight.
    Usage 3:12 hours
    Standby 7:59 hours
    Batter percent 46%
Most of my usage has been twitter or email. A little bit of game usage.
(yes I realize there are other threads of battery comparison but they are all comparing how much batter they have during times of day but that is dumb because there is no telling what you have been doing with your phone.)

Hi there, i have recently bought a new iphone 3GS and i'm seeing the same resaults for my battery and i own a 3G as well which my wife now uses and ive noticed that after upgrading to 3.0 its battery was depleting a bit faster then when it was on 2.2.1.
I logged my 3GS and i got in one day
Usage : 6 hourr/ using wifi most of the day, internet use, mail, ipod, SMS, and watched about 40 minutes of video.
    Standby: 12 hours
after all that it died and shut off.
I've tried draining the battery twice now to condtition my battery and i saw about a 7 percent jump each time so maybe that is working. I was getting about 4 and half hours hours before i conditioned and then about 5:45 mins and then about 6 hours.
I do remember last year when 2.0 came out my 3G had terrible battery life, very similar to what i'm seeing with my 3GS, and 2.0 was fixed with a firmware, so i only hope that the first firmwre will address this issue.
Or apple could just tell us the truth that the new phone has worse battery life then last yeasr model.
I did a percentage stat of life i was getting by 1 percent and i found that for each percent that depleted i got about 3 minutes and 45 seconds. If i was on 3G and surfing or checking email, i was getting about 2 minutes and 34 seconds, i literally could watch my battery depleted like i was driving a hemi and watching the gas gauge go down. So if apple claims that your supposed to get about 9 hours of regular usage on wifi or just playing movies and music and games, and 5 hours of usage on 3G, there must have some sorda super model we all dont have!!!!?????

  • What are irresistible features of the new OS X Mavericks

OS X Mavericks, I was definitely impressed with the smooth transistion I had while upgrading from Mountain Lion, still looking around.
What are the best features in this new OS that helps you with your "Productivity", "Easy of Use" or "Functionality" ?

Here are the major differences between Mavericks and Mountain Lion:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/

  • What are your top three favorite new features in 8?

First off, let me say that I am blown away with this update. It really has almost everything I could have hoped for. Bug fixes, workflow improvements galore, not a bunch of new plug ins but great improvements on the old ones, and I personally love the new look. Job well done apple. Three features that will revolutionize the way I work:
    1. Key command for hiding plug ins. Some plugs take a ton of time for the graphics to load, that used to be really annoying.
    2. Key command for disabling control surfaces. I am always needing to switch from using my control surface as a mixer controller to using it to quickly automate some CC on a MIDI track. This makes it very quick and easy.
    3. Delay Designer. I just got into this one, absolutely amazing. Those melodic patterns really got me excited. This completely obliterates any other delay I've ever seen feature wise, and the interface is great. I used to use Ohmboyz as my go to for complex delays, but Delay Designer blows it away from what I can tell. The compressor improvements are very nice as well!

    1. Mainstage - Even though I probably won't use Logic for live performance much, I love how simple, clean, and intuitive the interface looks. I will probably use this when composing as it seems to be one of the easiest ways to route drum pads, create keyboard layers, etc. really quickly, and the interface is very inviting.
    2. Delay designer looks really fun. I remember spending 30 minutes once in Sonar trying to get the stupid delay to do a really simple thing. I finally gave up and layered the audio data to make my own delay because it didn't give me enough control to make it happen in the plugin. It looks like I could have just drawn it into the Delay Designer and been done with it.
    3. Import from Garageband - Not a new feature, but I love using Garageband as a musical notepad when all I want to do is create something simple or jot down an idea. In this period, I don't need all the features of Logic, but I will eventually, and then I just open it up in Logic and get more advanced.

  • I want to use 2 monitors with my mbp, what are thoughts, I do web development and require another screen.  I want to pretty much use my mbp as a desktop at home and attach 2 external monitors, what are your thoughts

I use Adobe tools, photoshop, dreamweaver etc.  I  am constantly playing music and run out of space for viewing what I build on one screen.  What can you recommend I do to solve the issue?  The mac cinema is nice and all but still just one giant display.  2 monitors would be great but can my laptop handle it if I add an external video card via usb 2.0?  Help! My laptop has 384MB DDR3 SDRAM shared video memory, plus AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics with 512MB GDDR5 video memory.
    What are my options?

i've been looking for a while as well and either this (http://www.amazon.com/Matrox-D2G-DP2D-MIF-DualHead2Go-Digital-ME/dp/B0080K6WIG) seems to be the only thing that will make it work.
i'm about to buy one and will chime back in when it comes and i have it set up...
belkin makes a hub (http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U055/) but the display port doesn't double up as you'd expect unless they are thunderbolt (i believe - check other threads)...

  • Your thoughts on the new ABAP editor

I am interested to know other people's opinions on the new ABAP Editor and Debugger. I just started to use the new editor and I am kind of dissapointed:
    - the code completion feature is a far cry from the Java editor. It shows only one element in the code completion list based on a strange rule (I think it is first in the alphabetical order, and then based on the previously selected item)
    - it does not provide code completion for types
    - the code completion stays on for a short period of time, after that it dissapears. Is there a key combination that can launch the code completion on demand?

    Hello Tiberiu,
With the new Editor, you can launch the code completion with the combination "Ctrl + Space".
    Regards,
    Walter

  • What are pros and cons of new OSX upgrade?

Have you upgraded to the newest OSX for desktops--free download at the Mac App Store?  I'd like to know if there's any downside/problems with the upgrade before I download it.  I've seen some of the pros, as described in a recent email blast from Apple< [email protected], but I'd like to know what you think about.  Are you using the new upgrade?  What do you like and dislike about it?  If you've decided NOT to download the upgrade, why not?
    Thanks!!

    NOPE!
    [email protected],
    Email link, not a website.
Are you using the new upgrade?
    NOPE!
If you've decided NOT to download the upgrade, why not?
I usually do not upgrade until v2 or 3 is released.  Also, not all of my 3rd party apps are compatible w/Maverick yet.
    Thanks!!
    marilyn
I am not one that jumps out the frying pan into the fire just because it's free and/or "new".  I don't fix what ain't broken.  I am still learning & enjoying ML.  I am not in the mood to learn a new OS just yet.

  • Where are iBooks stored on the new Mavericks OS?

I was trying to find where Apple is storing the iBooks on Mavericks.  I knew where it was before Mavericks.  I download a lot of books and pdfs from the Internet that I manually add to iBooks and I would like to know where they are being stored.  I am trying to get my wife's mac with the same books and mine.  Right now it is missing a few.  It would be easier to just find where they are stored and copy them than for me to go to all ot these websites and redownload everything.

Creating an OS X-style "alias" is not enough. I haven't tried the following solution (and I won't do it myself as my HDD is big enough, sorry), but the correct way to do this kind of jobs on OS X is to create a "symlink", or "symbolic link", which is a UNIX-style alias (read more about it on Wikipedia if you'd like to). To put it short, you type/paste the following commands into Terminal.app, one at a time (you will be making changes to your system files and you will be prompted for your admin password, which is pretty dangerous if you don't understand the mechanisms—remember to quit iBooks.app first, make backups, and be prepared for any damages):
    sudo mv "~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks" "/Volumes/EXTERNAL DRIVE/PATH TO IBOOKS FOLDER";
    sudo ln -s "/Volumes/EXTERNAL DRIVE/PATH TO IBOOKS" "~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks";
You should change "EXTERNAL DRIVE" to the name of your drive, and replace "PATH TO IBOOKS" with the path you want to store iBooks documents on your external drive. For instance, replacing "PATH TO IBOOKS" with "iBooks" simply creates a directory named "iBooks" under the root directory of your external drive with the iBooks data. Note that after doing this you won't be able to properly use iBooks without connecting the external drive.
This might or might not work, but I hope this helps.
(If this doesn't work, recover to the original state by quitting iBooks.app first, and type/paste the following into Terminal (you might again be prompted for your admin password):
    sudo rm -rf "~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks";
    sudo mv "/Volumes/EXTERNAL DRIVE/PATH TO IBOOKS FOLDER" "~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks";
This will most likely recover your original working state of iBooks.)

  • Cash back Card what are your thoughts.

I wanted to get some feedback of what my next reward card should be.  I was interested in either a chase freedom or a Discover.   I also did some research on the amex blue preferred.  I dont like the option of salle mae. I just wanted 1 last good reward card and this will probably be a while before  get.  I wanted to know which is hard to get.  I am thinking the discover card is the hardest.

Between Freedom and Discover, go for Discover. They are much better with CLIs and APR reductions etc vs Chase. The reward categories during the year are less specific than Freedom's (Freedom often does just Lowe's or just Amazon; Discover is less restrictive). You get a free FICO with Discover. They also have a great Discover Deals mall with high percentages off on many websites. Pretty much comparing the two on their own I feel Discover blows Freedom out of the water. Freedom you are pretty unlikely to see much CLI growth with and you will never see an APR reduction.thats good to know thank because generally my overall spending is food, gas and some retail not a lot. once and a while i do a auto repair purchase. I originally wanted a chase freedom but now that i am looking at my spending habits and what i use my card for it might not be a good fit for me and my lifestyle. The only i might consider is the amex blue preferred. The Blue Cash Preferred is a great option if you spend enough to justify the fee. 6% on groceries is pretty difficult to beat.  yeIts funny how any card was my goal when  i started and i always wanted a chase freedom but i cant keep up with the categories.  now im like i only use my card for gas and groceries and back to school auto repairs, and utility bills ! LOL. Thank you for the insight

  • What are your impressions of "multi-tasking"?

If you have iOS4 and a capable device, you should have multi-tasking and opened apps appearing in the task bar. Newer app versions are able to run in the background. In my opinion, when I close most apps (by pressing the home button), I want them to close completely, not run in the background. Aside from being a privacy issue, apps in the task bar may use battery power or if truly in a suspended mode, they still take up memory or process capability. In order to really shut them down, two additional home button clicks and then two more screen strokes are required. Not very efficient and probably leading to an earlier home button failure. Why not have some kind of screen command (tap or swipe combination?) to simultaneously shut down all apps in the task bar? The bar itself is useless if you have used many apps in the course of a day. To find what you're looking for, you have to scroll through a long parade of icons. It's a lot easier to just tap the icon where you know it is sitting in the nice folder you created. I don't get it. I realize the bar can be used for switching open apps, but this is really not that big of a deal for the vast majority of apps. Furthermore, there should be an option to enable or disable multi-tasking globally as well as for individual apps. Now that would be an improvement.
    What are your thoughts?

I havent done any kind of multitasking on my ipod touch, im waiting to upgrade my software to the newer one. However, I couldnt agree more with that of pressing the home button many times to perform basic function to switch apps or enable the multitasking ability. I think palm adapted a better design of software than apple ever did with their IOS 4. Palm's webOS can handle full multitasking--something the iPhone can't do. Palm uses what it calls "a deck of cards model" for managing multitasking: You can view each of your open applications at once, shuffle them any way you choose, and then discard the ones you want to close. All of this is done with intuitive gestures that mimic handling a physical deck of cards. Apps remains live, even when minimized into the card view, so changes can continue to happen in real-time, even if you've moved on to another activity.
I had the time to experience a bit of a palm web os software on an AT&T store and my impression on that software is done more elegantly than apple multitasking home pressing button system.
P.S to NYtroutbum: you should definitely present that idea to apple by its feedback product page. Let's hope it listens.

Isn't replacing your iPad Apple "officially" acting on it?

What model hard drives are they putting in the new Mac Pro's? I need to purchase a second drive in anticipation of a 2.8 I'm ordering and I want to get the same brand and model.

Mine came with the Seagate ST3320820AS_P; however, WDs are also in the mix. And don't forget that the BTO options allow increasing drive size; those may be different makes as well.
