What cable i need to connect a TV? (Not LCD)

I need to record some video i have in idvd or imovie hd

It depends if your TV has phono, S-video or other types of connections ?
The Apple DVI to Video Adapter was designed specifically to allow MacBook Pro, Mac mini and Power Mac G5 systems users to connect from the DVI port to S-video or Composite video devices such as TVs, VCRs or overhead projectors with S-Video or RCA (Composite) connectors.

  • Please can someone tell me what cable I need to connect my Macbook Pro 15'' Retina display to a Yamakasi Catleap Monitor?

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook Pro 15'' Retina and I'm thinking of getting a Yamaksai Catleap Monitor, please can someone tell me the best way to connect this? Do I need a thunderbolt to DVI connector, or Thunderbolt to VGA? Im assuning the former would be superior! Please can someone advise?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Cheers,
    Guy

    Hello,
Some UK links... You can use any of the following to get the video signal out of the iMac and into a standard format:
    Mini DVI - DVI
    Mini DVI - VGA
    Mini DVI - Composite/S-Video.
The DVI will give you best quality, but VGA will be simpler. The DVI to HDMI connector is:
Buy a DVI to HDMI connector (link). Long HDMI cables are pretty expensive though.
Although HDMI can handle sound as neither DVI, MiniDVI nor VGA do you'll need to connect the sound separately. Simply connect the sound out on the iMac to the input on the TV using a cable like this:
    3.5mm to RCA.
If you use the miniDVI to VGA connector here's a long VGA cable (link).
All Macs since about 1999 have had +DVD Player+ installed. I'm not at my Mac right now to check Front Row in Leopard but Front Row in Tiger certainly played DVDs (but +DVD Player+ is a better, more flexible DVD Player).
    cheers

  • What cable is needed to connect a MBP to an external Display?

I've been browsing Apple Store for cables to connect my MBP to my Sony HDTV, which both has HDMI input and a VGA input, I'm very confused about what to choose. I don't want to buy something that I won't be able to use.

You want the MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable.  If you have a Thunderbolt port, the adapter plugs into that as well.

  • Just learning the guitar and want to know what cable I need to connect my guitar to my imac

I know this may seem a basic question but there are a lot of different ways to look at doing this.I am only just starting to learn so don't need any thing fancy.

you an try this cable, however most people find that the level is unacceptable without a preamp of some kind. in general some type of audio interface is required, something like any of these:

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

    Thank you LowLuster,
At the apple store they said I needed an esata to usb wire.  But looking at wires on line has been confusing.  Is sata the same as esata?  How do I know if I need a usb 3 or usb 2?

  • Can some one please tell me what leads i need to connect my mac book pro to my tv

Hi i have a mac book pro can someone tell me what leads i need to connect it to my tv
    thanks scott

If your TV has HDMI, and if your MBP is compatible with this adapter, I highly recommend:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er
It sends the audio out through the mini DisplayPort into the HDMI cable, but only if your computer has that capability.  On that page, scroll down and look for a comment titled "How you know if it is supported w/o guessing."

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
Thank everybody, especialy Zyriab, ne was the closest.
    High regards to everybody

Can you clarify whether you're using a MacBook Pro or a PowerBook?  Your post is ambiguous.  For good measure please tell us when it was purchased new.

  • What cable to buy to connect iPod to my stereo?

hello - i'm about to purchase iPod classic 120, and would like to know what cable i need to buy to be able to connect the iPod directly to my stereo + speakers, w/o having to run it through iTunes. i have an airport, and imagine there is a way to play the iPod through that. thanks in advance!

    Hello,
I found good old Radio Shack as well as Wal-Mart carries what you need.
It requires a cord with an 1/4 inch stereo male plug and the other end is a "y" out RCA male jacks. Try to get the cords with "Gold Ends" (end plugs are gold) they play cleaner. I use a 3 ft cord. (they come in variable lengths)
I have left a cord plugged into my stereo ( into an aux. input) all the time, so all I have to do is plug it in and play.
    Good luck

No, not until or if an adaptor becomes available.  See this thread.

  • What do i need to connect my mbp to a tv with a thunderbolt port?

I have an HDMI compatible (?) tv and my macbook pro has a thunderbolt port (instead of the minidisplay port) and i want to hook it up to my tv but i don't know how or what cables i need. thanks in advance!

Mini DisplayPort is the same as Thunderbolt, the two connectors are identical physically but the capabilities are different. Sellers typically have the Mini DisplayPort connector listed as such, so it is hard to find a Thunderbolt connector. But all you need is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. You also need the long HDMI cable, which you probably already have.
