What camcorder under $500 would you guys recommend?

I'm about to have a baby in the next week or so, and I'd like to get a camcorder!
What camcorder would you recommend to work well with the Mac lifestyle?
I have an iMac 21" + apple TV, and I don't really need HD or anything - just good wquality widescreen footage would be nice to watch on AppleTV once I'm done editing in iMovie.
Any suggestions?
// Martin

A miniDV tape cam will give you lossless quality video, as opposed to other formats that use high compression to store the video files. Definitely avoid any DVD cam, as DVD's are end products and they are not intended for editing purposes.
Since you seem to be new to moviemaking, you may also not know that you can get a free download of iMovie HD6, the previous version of iMovie and many will say the last, best iMovie made. It offers greater editing capabilities and a pro style timeline editing format, as opposed to iMovie 08, which is geared towards the You Tube style moviemaker and has a very different workflow.
If you do decide that HD6 offers more of what you want, you must only consider a miniDV cam with firewire, as iMovie HD6 will only capture from that format. Other format cams will require third party software, extra time and loss of quality in your final production, if you need to import non .dv files into HD6.
Having a tape cam also allows you to always safely keep your original footage, plus make a tape copy of your finished movie by exporting from iMovie HD6 back to your cam. Tapes are far more reliable long term storage media, if stored properly, than any DVD or hard drive will ever be.
Here's the link to the free HD6 download:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Here's a link to a camcorder review website to help you decide which way to go. Bear in mind that salespeople are going to direct you to what their store wants you to buy and with the glut of hard drive, flash memory and DVD cams out there, the best format, miniDV, is not getting its fair shake.

Good luck giving birth next week MARTIN - you must be the world's first!!!

what version of windows would you most recommend using?
XP Home, XP Professional, Vista Home, Vista Business?
I see that XP takes up 1.5GB versus Vista's 20GB. XP uses 128MB Ram versus vista 512MB.
It would seem like XP would run faster and take up less space... but is it the best choice? Thanks for the suggestions.

  • What Would You Guys Do?

I make this summer video type thing for my friends and family every year. This year I wanted to have something at the beginning to really make it cool so this is what I was thinking... I wanted to do a 1 shot opening set in high speed from getting up in the morning to getting to the lake we always go to... The difficult part of this is that I want to have the credits of the people who are in the movie appear on objects as I drive on the street like you see the street signs say a persons name with there picture, or I pick up a soda can and its not the brand name on there its a persons name and picture. So my basic question is how would you guys do this? I assume shake would be the best program for placing the text and pictures on the objects and making them look real, I'm just not as good with shake as I am with Final Cut Studio 2. I have only had shake for a little while now , and dont really know what the best way to do this would be.
Also i am using a camera that records on mini dv tape just so you guys know, I have heard some people say that changes the way you work with shake a bit.

Hmm I would suggest key framing a corner pin. Or if you want better results use tracking. Take a text node in the image section and then add a corner pin which is in the transform section. To keyframe it press the button with the key on it under the video. Once your done get and over node and put the text in the first input and the video in the second. If you look in the tutorial pdf you go with shake it will tell you how to do this with a tutorial replacing a bus sign. Hope that helped.

    Hi,
One of my client sells items from the lorry, so he wants his drivers to print invoices on the way. My question is what kind of printer would you use to print on a lorry? Any idea, experience?
    Thx in advance,

    Hi Laci,
There are quite a few mobile printers, for example HP does a range of battery powered Officejet printers which you could use on the go. For instance, check this out:

  • What kind of fragmentation would you park this under ?

    hi guys
    i am reading about
    alter table xxxx shrink command;
    on http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/10gdba/week15_10gdba.html
q1) do you consider this as a fragmentation ?
q2) if so, what kind of fragmentation does this falls under ?
q3) o`reilly oracle essential park this under segment fragmentation
but to me. it seems to be some kind "blocks fragmentation" which i believe, those empty spaces will be reuse again due to further insert or updates and those empty spaces will be coaleces during the reuse of the freespace as state in the oracle concept
<i>Released space may or may not be contiguous with the main area of free space in a
data block. Oracle coalesces the free space of a data block only when (1) an INSERT or
UPDATE statement attempts to use a block that contains enough free space to contain a
new row piece, and (2) the free space is fragmented so the row piece cannot be
inserted in a contiguous section of the block. </i>
hope to hear advices from you guys soon.
    Regards,
    Noob

    q1 no
q3 if it would qualify as fragmentation it is segment fragmentation.
    But it's not fragmentation.
The article is poor and shouldn't have been posted on Oracle's website.
The author fails to differentiate between freelist managed tablespaces and ASSM tablespaces. In the latter case fragmentation is no longer an issue.
Also the author states alter table move should move to a new tablespace and can't be executed online.
    Both are incorrect.
Finally the article omits one fundamental question: does suffering from Compulsive Reorganization Disorder solve fragmentation? Or is it just a waste of resources?

  • What software would you highly recommend?

Is there any particular software you truly recommend to purchase for your MAC Pro. I am open to any software you feel adds enjoyment, amusement, business, utilties etc.
I am new to the MAC and am not familar with software that people buy outside the stock software that came with the MAC Pro.

Do check for "Universal" versions of these softwares before buying.
The whole Intel Mac switch info page
I can recommend Enigmo2 as a fun 3D puzzle game.
Doom3 is excellent. Check for update after starting the game, quit and a website will be there to download.
Unreal Tournament 2004 gets a lot of use as it has so many levels, third party maps and mods.
You'll need to update at this site right away for bonus vehicles and patches. (Do Bookmark it as it's hard to find later) You want the "ut2004-macpatch3369-2.dmg.bz2" file.
Also bookmark and register at this site to download maps for UT2004. To install the maps, control click on the original UT2004 icon in your applications folder and "Show Package Contents". It's actually a folder with folders inside. Now when you download the maps, place like files extensions in their respective folders. For example .ut2 files go in the "Maps" folder.
    Quake4 is a good 3D game too.
X-Words Deluxe if you like playing "scrabble"
BurnAgain if you like to make it easy to do multiple burning sessions to a cd-r.
    Google Earth of course.
    HandBrake to rip DVD movies.
HardWare Monitor to keep tabs on your fan speeds and temps etc.
VisualHub to convert video to different formats easily. Especially WMV3 to something your Mac will play without installing Flip4Mac or Windows Media Player (don't do it, buggy and malware prone)
X-Bench to test the performance of your machine and compare others results.
    Azureus to Bit-torrent.
VLC to play just about any audio and video file, more formats to come all the time. No WM3 at this time. Just download and convert the file instead of watching it in your browser. Control click to select download linked file.
GL Image Browser is a neat program that will show every picture on your hard drive (or just a select folder) comes in handy to see everything, including the secret little DVD Player pictures of DVD movies you (or others) have been playing.
Little Snitch a outgoing firewall that Apple doesn't provide in Mac OS X. It's excellent at checking programs to see when they are transmitting over the internet, you can block or allow certain access options.
Rember is a GUI front end to the Memtest program. Memtest = Memory Test.
SnapZ Pro X is the ultimate screen record/capture utility.
AppleWorks is a pretty cheap, spreadsheet, drawing, painting, database, word processing and presentation package for $79 or so. Apple hasn't updated it in years, it will most likely have to run under Rosetta emulation on your Mac Pro as it's a PPC application. But if it runs I suggest getting it because your not going to find a deal like that anymore.
OfficeMac is available, but it's Microsoft and it's security prone as all heck. Several "security" updates this year alone. blah, let them go completely. Unless you absolutely have to exchange Office files with Win.
NeoOffice Has finally gone Aqua! It's a open source, free (almost for beta, to be totally free later of course) office program that's cross platform and very cool looking now. So get this puppy and ditch Microsofat for good!
Anti-virus Scratch it, unless your dealing with a lot of Win files and passing them on to other Win users. Then I suggest the free ClamXAv.
The world's best anti-virus software maker with nearly 100% malware detection doesn't make a Mac version. That's Kaspersky of course. If you should decide to run Windows on your Mac.
Parallels Workstation To run "Windows" in a window on Mac OS X. Performance is very good because of the new dual cores, but not as good as a native boot for 3D games.
Apple's BootCamp to create a Windows "partition" on your Mac OS X boot drive that you can install Windows on. Requires a reboot holding "option" to select Windows to boot from. Your Mac is now a PC. Grab that anti-virus.
Mac OS X Tiger: The Missing Manual is a in depth user guide to Mac OS X, teach you most all you need to know how to get around Mac OS X.
If your ready for Terminal, which is Apple's "command line" and unix. then search for "Unix Mac OS X" on Amazon and you'll see plenty of books.

    And of course

(just remember that none of these software's has been tested secure, so be careful. Never give your admin password to any program unless you completely trust and verified the source)
Backup Backup Backup Mac's are prone to drive failure and OS glitches too. So find yourself another drive and a copy of auto-cloning/auto-backup software like (search Apple) DejaVu. Need a universal version of course. This way you can boot from a cloned boot drive and repair or recover, or reverse clone if you get a OS glitch.
Well I could go on, but that should get you started in the world of Mac.
    Welcome by the way!!

  • Would you guys please release a 1.3 update for original Open?

    Dear developers at Mozilla.
ZTE and you guys have been kicking users like a football between each other in regard to an update to the original Open, with one party telling users to talk to the other in endless loop.
FFOS 1.1, as on the Open, is UNUSABLE, with constant warning of out of memory on 80% of the webpage, extreme sluggish, unresponsive operations. Granted, its not an expensive phone, but its still $70, a month's food for some people. I skipped icecreams to save $5 (and my tummy), spent $70 on your good name, and guess what I got?
We know a 1.3 update is doable, because xda people has already packed FFOS 2.1 *.img files for flashing of the original Open.
This is FFOS's future, none of the users would have purchased this thing if not for your brand, by kicking users back and forth and offers no real help whatsoever, you are tarnishing your own brand.
Just pay ONE competent developer an extra day from your no doubt extremely busy schedule to help people who spent money because they loved you guys. PLEASE. It doesn't even take you ONE day, and it helps thousands of people! Whats stopping you? ZTE doesn't, and you are our best hope!
If GPS or home button won't work, nobody give a damn about those, put a disclaimer on it, a few dysfunctional things is a million times better than this UNUSABLE plastic thing at the moment.
I already dug my own grave and purchased a Open C, which I imaging will be in the update graveyard sooner than I can finish typing this post. But at least It a nice phone that is usable!
I don't even dare to put my Open on ebay, because I cannot, in all honesty, tell people they are buying something thats remotely useful, I am ashamed FOR you, not Of you.
Apple has fanboys, google has money, all your have, is good name, which I tried my best to spread since 1998. Please, don't ruin it!
    Sincerely
    Chris

I tried, but fastboot kept giving me "waiting for devices".
Anyway, I sold the Open phone on ebay, and I clearly stated the sluggish performance of it so hopefully buyer won't be in for a shock of his life.
I am happy with the Open C now, I do worries what kind of update it will have down the road. 1.4, 2.0, etc. Still, at least 1.3 is very much usable, unlike 1.1 on the Open. Worst case scenario, I can sell it again next year for another $35 and get a flame or something.
I now just hope Mozilla carefully consider options available to help end users. I know they have to pick a partner from limited options, but do stand up a bit more to vendors, end users are your future, while vendors are all in it for money.

  • 528 x 312 video - what sort of project would you create ?

    Hi everyone,
I have a video, 528x312 are its dimensions.
I do not know what project settings to use, since this is a weird

do you choose the closest preset size and go with that ? ( I tried this, and had to scale the video, which resulted in fuzzy results )

  • Is it possible to rip itouch to pc? If not what 3rd party program would you recomend?

My pc crashed and i lost my music libary. now i have all music still on my itouch but not sure if i can rip off it.  so if theres a 3rd party program that can do this what one would you use?

To copy the settings and data to your new iTunes library try this:
Make sure your computer is still authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your iPod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in iTunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Would you guys price match THIS sale price?

    {removed per forum guidelines}
I have a Best Buy gift card and I'd rather buy it from your company than Sears.
But I know if I go in store to attempt a price match I'm going to get one snippy rep or another making a comment about how it's 'too much of a discount' like when I asked them to PM Wolfenstein: The New Order last week. Kmart had it for $20 in store, you guys had it at $60, even though I'm pretty sure MSRP has gone down to at least $40 by now on it.
Anyway, any ideas if you guys would match that Dual Shock 3 I linked above? It's priced currently at $15.65 from Sears.com and as of the time this thread is being created(3:17am EST 12/14/14) it is still in stock and available for shipping as well as in stock to buy at my closest Sears store.

    Hi CheapestGamer,
I'm sorry for our delay to your post. We're doing our best to reach everyone who has contacted us. I'm also sorry you weren't able to get your price match approved; unfortunately, it sounds like we made reasonable efforts to verify its availability at Sears, but we had to deny your request based on the information we were given. Still, I'm glad you were able to find the items you were looking for, even if they weren't purchased from us.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

Personally, on a blog I like a few how to's, information on the company and most importantly? Exposure of bugs and issues. If something in the product is broken then TELL US. If a patch comes out, TELL US.

  • What Illy CS4 book would you recommend for the beginner to grow with?

    Hello All,
I am looking for a good illustrator cs4 book for the beginner to grow with.
I have read reviews on amazon but thought I might ask the pros.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The instructions that ship with the program: The Help menu.
I know it's boring, but if you want to learn a new program, the most expedient way is to work through the provided manual, cover to cover. Don't just read it, actually perform the operations it describes.
Third-party books almost universally involve these downsides:
    They are expensive.
They are incomplete. They try to walk a fence-edge between rank beginner and intermediate user; between being merely a too-wordy reiteration of the Help files and next-level techniques for the more experienced user. The reason is obvious: the goal is to sell to as wide a range of users as possible. The result is often unsatisfying: They can't possibly include everything in the Help files, so they leave gaps for the beginner. But they feel compelled to appeal to beginners, so the experienced user has to weed through a bunch of entry-level bulk, just to get to the "juicy stuff" he's interested in. He pay's 100% price for about 15% of the content.
The are inefficient. They are full of unnecssary verbiage attempting to be clever, cute, hip, friendly, and thereby supposedly more "approachable." Most fail miserably at this, and the result is you have to read through endless passages of such original content as "this will knock your socks off" and "this is awesome" when what you really need is "just the facts, ma'am." The Help files fall under the stylistic guidelines of technical documentation: They adhere to "just-the-facts, ma'am."
They are short-lived. They go quickly out-of-date, which is one of the reasons why they are too expensive: They have to make their money quickly after release.
I'm not saying don't buy any. I have a small fortune's-worth myself, all but a dozen or so of which I wish I had never bought. With the money I wasted on them (plus interest), I could buy a new Honda Fury. I'm just saying do the included documentation--however painful--first. And keep doing it for new features when new versions are released. That will get you there the quickest, because it will lay the necessary foundations of overall interface scheme and basic object principles. Then, when you have that understanding, look only for books that are targeted toward an at-least intermediate level user. That way, your money will be spent, but it will be better-invested.
