What camera do I need?

I want to be able to plug my camera into my computer and transfer my home movies to a DVD.
I have an iMac running OS X 10.3.9 and iMovie 4.
I bought a Sony DCR HC21, thinking it would work. It does not.
Help, please?

Welcome to iMovie Discussions..
It's not really the brand that's important, but the model. (The Sony brand, for instance, makes many, many compatible camcorders, but the models which use "microMV" tape - instead of "miniDV" or "Digital-8" tape - are NOT compatible with iMovie, because they encode the signals differently on that kind of tape. Similarly, their mini-DVD camcorders are NOT compatible with iMovie.) Oh: hard disc camcorders, like the JVC 'Everio', are NOT compatible with iMovie.
Almost all brands of camcorders - Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Samsung, JVC - are generally compatible, as long as they use "miniDV" tape. In Europe (..e.g; Spain..) some camcorders will NOT be able to import edited movies back from iMovie and onto a tape in the cam, as some have their DV IN disabled, so that they can be sold more cheaply than the ones with DV OUT and IN. So most will send video and audio OUT to iMovie, but cheaper ones may not be able to receive it back IN from iMovie.
The important thing is to look online, using Google, to discover the capabilities of any particular model which you see offered for sale. If it doesn't have a specific model name or number, then avoid it ..as poor descriptions like "JVC camcorder" don't tell you anything about that model ..it could be anything!
On the other hand, if the description says "JVC GR-D270" you could look that up with Google, and find, for example, this rather poor description (..although it does include the phrases "..Firewire, S-Video, USB (for photos), and composite video out connections.." and "..MiniDV recording format.."

It depends on what Mac you have and what version of iMovie. You may need to use Firewire.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • What kind of video camera do I need to be able to import to

I do not know what kind of video camera I need to have to import to iPhoto. My parents have a VHS camcorder. Can I use that one? Do i need to have a digital camcorder?

    Hi Katrina,
    welcome to thsi forum
    to throw in some €cents...:
    * mini-dv, nothing else
    * with the "big" brands (Sony, Canon, ...) you stay save
    * go to a shop and make some "hands on experience"... Panasonic for example is VERY small for some hands...
    * ask for a firewire-cable, 4/6pin to connect camera with your Mac (no, usb DOESN'T work)
    * that camera doesn't need any effects...- you will add this in iMovie..., so a very basic one is good enough
    * get a second battery and a tripod ;-))
    * follow any other advice given you here in this forum
and, besides, no, vhs camcorder don't work with iM....

  • Equium A210 171 What info do i need before i use the recovery disk?

    Hi,
I have 1 recovery disk that came with my equium, haven't used it before.
On the back of the recovery disk envelope it says "insert the first disk"
I'm assuming there should be a second?
Also what info will i need to provide during the install process? like serial number?
All i have is a black and white sticker that's on the side of the box it came in, but that was so long ago.
I'm having lots of issues with windows installer not running and many others,
Windows updates won't work either and i've tried to fix those but a clean reinstall of the os was recommended.
Now at this point nothing will install because windows installer won't work.
So i think i wil lhave to attempt a clean install, but i'm not even sure the cd drive will work.
I have gotten a great run out of this laptop, bit slow for my needs today but over all great product, bought in 2007.
With a clean os and 4 gigs of ram this thing could last for years more, can't afford a new one right now.
I have really tried to avoid using a recovery disk in the past, as i've never had any serious issues till now.
    Thanks

Im wondering why you get such disk together with your notebook why? Because I did not get the recovery disk but I had to create one using the Toshiba Recovery disk creator software
But my notebook is newer than your A210 this might be the reason why you got such disk
I created a recovery disk and I needed two DVD disks I think these depends on the image file size
    > Also what info will i need to provide during the install process? like serial number?
This is not needed because your system was already activated.
But I recommend to backup your personal data because the recovery disk would format the whole HDD and you would lose the files.
PS: recommend reading the other threads in the Product recovery forum!

  • What software do I need to manage my itunes on my HP laptop

What software do I need on my HP laptop to be able to go into itunes and manage my phone, as far as pictures, and calendar, and such?

To start off with, you will need to download iTunes. Make sure that you download the correct version, Windows, and if you have 32-bit or 64-bit. Pictures taken with the iPhone are imported to the computer via Scanner and Camera Wizard in Windows, or can also be copied via Windows Explorer in Computer. Photos are then synced to the computer via iTunes by selecting a folder on the computer that contains photos and they are copied to the computer.
Calendar has to be handled by a supported application. That can be Outlook 2003 or 2007. Other choices include using Google calendar, MobileMe,etc. The latter allow for OTA syncing of calendar. Contacts require a supported application as well, those include Outlook 2003 or 2007, or Windows Address book in Vista, or Windows Mail in Windows 7. You also have the option as above for Google or MobileMe.
Information about what you might want to use is found on the Apple website and descibes the supported applications.

  • Newbie question: What accesories do I need ...

    Hi there,
I'm in a phase of buying the iPod Color (60GB) and want to use it as follows:
    - Connect it to my PC to synchronize (via iTunes/Photoshop Elements 3.0) with various kinds of sources (music, photos, podcasts, music store) & recharge (preferably using a dock)
    - Connect it to my Audio/TV equipment for slideshows and/or listening & charging
    - Connect it to my car audio
    - At times (vacation) be able to use (part of the) disk as a backup device for my digital camera (Canon G5) whilst on the road.
    My questions:
    - Am I asking too much?
    - If not what exactly do I need to buy next to the iPod color bundle itself to realize the functionality listed above without having to carry around with all sorts of cables and docks between PC/Car/TV-Audio? (I want a comfortable solution in which the iPod is the only "mobile" part)
I know this sounds pretty trivial but I find it pretty confusing to compose the correct bundle on the iStore (Netherlands) which led me to put forward this question in this forum.
    Hoping for some good advise.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your reply.
I definitely need a case based on the feedback I got. Seems the iPods case is easy to be scratched. (BTW: Any recommendations?)
Furthermore I have the following list:
    - Seems I need 2 docks, one for the PC and one for the TV/Audio.
    - Next to this I need an additional AV-cable and Monster Audio Cable to connect one of the docks to the Audio/TV
    - I need a power supply + cable (which one?) to be able to charge the iPod whilst on the "Audio/TV-dock?.
    - I need an FM transmitter (which one do you advise?) for in-car usage (I don't have a cassette player anymore so the cassette-adapter is no option). Any experience on the quality, is it better than normal broadcasts?
    - I need an iPod camera connector so I can connect it with my camera via an USB cable.
    Guess that's about it, right?
@arrowsparrow: The dutch translation is readable though not really correct. I get the idea but it is a bit too literal. If I didn't have the English text for reference it would be hard to understand parts of it. I think you can do a better job yourself once you took the dutch-course :>)
I just took a vacation (west coast of France)a few weeks ago so I won't be going again in short time.

  • Video/audio out to HDTV-what leads do I need?

    Hi,
I've got the iMac most recently released (just before the Intel one just announced). Basically, I've got some HD content on here which I can play with VLC media player, and I own a HDTV. I want to mirror what's on my iMacs screen on the HDTV, and I want it so I don't really lose any quality (i.e. it will still be high def on the screen). Also I want the sound to go out to my Amp.
My HDTV has a HDMI and Component ports, so what lead do I need from the iMac to the HDTV, and what lead do i need to get sound to my Amp (presumably from the headphone socket?!). As I don't have a VGA port on my TV, would the Apple VGA Display adapter be necessary, and then buy a VGA-HDMI/Component so it works (if one's available).
I'd really appreciate any help on the matter. Also would it look as good on my TV as it does on the iMac?

    Hello James,
you want the same thing as I do. Here is what you need:
If your iMac is one without built in camera (ie. one of the first series) you want to try a Mini-VGA to DVI Adapter which can be bought at apple. You then need an DVI to HDMI adapter which is available in any given bigger department store that sells HDTV sets.
If your iMac is one with built-in camera I think the output already is a Mini-DVI, so I would guess there is an adapter from Mini-DVI to HDMI. Check with your local Apple dealer. They should know.
But: Your TV has to be able to handle the resolutions of your iMac. I tried the same with my Panasonic Beamer (but via component) - no luck. Best I get is a distorted picture in 640 x 400 (which is not exactly what we need here). The "Monitor" control panel lets you chose from many different ones, but none of them matched my beamer and I haven't found a way to add new resolution.
So: If there's somebody that can help here - get the tips on!
The better your TV matches/handles the iMac video signal the better will the picture quality be. An example: Let's say your TV is a real HDTV with 1920 x 1080 (lucky bas**ard!) then you may set the resolution to this in the monitor control panel (this resolution does exist) and you may enjoy LOTR extended version in full shiny brightness (if you have an HDTV copy of the movie
    See ya,

  • What RAM do I need and where can I get it from?

    Hi all,
I know this is probably a simple question, but I just want to make sure I don't mess up my computer! I have an old school DV iMac, and bought the Mac OS X upgrade not too long after it came out (which is rather a while ago now!), but couldn't install it became I don't have enough RAM. And I obviously have just put it off and off. Now I'm at uni, and want the computer to work as well as it can for my mum, because she's even worse than me when it comes to computers. So, anyway, I need RAM. What type do I need and where can I get it from fairly cheaply? And how much would you recommend I get? My friend says he knows how to put it in, so all okay there hopefully/
    My computer's details:
    Processor info: PowerPC G3
    Machine speed: 400MHz
    OS: 9.2.2
    Built-in memory: 64MB
I remember being able to get more details than this from somewhere on the computer, but I can't remember where...I haven't used it for 6 months or something, and am obviously getting forgetful.
Hope someone can help. If you need to know anything else, tell me where to get the info from and I will tell you!
    Cheers,
    Fran
DV iMac   Mac OS 9.2.x   It's lime green...ooh...

    Hi,
I just bought some RAM from Crucial.
If you go to www.crucial.com/uk and follow the Crucial Memory Advisor Tool, you should be able to find the RAM for your Mac.
1 GB sticks are pretty good value at the moment (they've even gone down a few pounds since I bought mine a week ago) and if you enter this code (found it on aonther thread here) you might get a couple of pounds knocked off the total: CUSTOMPC
There's also places like Kingston & Cancom to try, as well as Misco.co.uk. But Crucial select the recommended RAM for your Mac.
Also, when you think you've found the right RAM and want to buy it, try the Apple agent chat, and double-check with them.
    Hope this is useful.

  • What cameras  are compatible with the camera connection kit

what cameras are compatible with the camera connection kit and ipad2

I also recently bought the camera kit and found that it worked fine as long as you don't format the SD card using PC. Once I re-formatted using my camera I could once again upload my photos. that was until I switched formats to Adobe RAW, it seemed unable to upload again. So I switched to S RAW and that worked fine. Sometimes my kit won't upload photos but I find that by just re-inserting the card it works fine.
Haven't tried video yet, but I recently learned that the devices are quit sensitive to the "Format"(that needs to be FAT32, or exFAT- but in this instance it needs to be formatted by a Mac).
    Good luck

  • Problems running basic text in aftereffects faster than 19fps... what exactly do I need?

OK, so I finaly upgraded my computer into the mild 21st century, and to my disapointment, I cannot seem to run anything as smoothly as I had thought.
These are the specs for my computer...
    ASUS m5a99x EVO motherboard
    8 gigs ddr3 1600 ram
    NVIDIA 9800gt 1 gig ddr3 gpu
AMD Phenom II x4 B50 Processor at 3.2ghz (IE its an AMD athlon II 450 X3 3.2ghz with its fourth core unlocked (of which i have had no problems with thus far, as it seems to be very stable)
    150 gig 7200 sata 2 harddrive (OLD)
200 gig 5400 sata 2 hard drive (OLD AS SH*T)
    300ghz portable usb2 hd (7200) (2 years old)
Basicly, I cant seem to run even basic text in after effects faster than 19 FPS.
I've tried to change the resolution to half, and even a fourth, and that didnt work at all, infact it made it run about 1 frame worse.
I tried changing the Open gl texture memory, raising and lowering, but to no avail, Ive changed the ram usage in after effects to use 2 gigs per core, then one gig, then turned off multiframe rendering alltogether, and nothing.
I feel like ive tried everything in my power.
Now the Imacs at my school, they run the program smooth as hell... and they arent that much better, spec wise than my computer.
Even my friends Imac can run it smooth, and he only has an I5 cpu at 2.4ghz, which is fine and my understanding of cpus is that those are better proccessors, but its not that much better, and even still, why would that be neccesary just to run text scrolling accross the screen?
Even more so, why would changing the resolution not have any effect?
What exactly do I need to run after effects smoothly for a basic text scroll at say, 720P?
I need to know what to upgrade, soon I plan to get cs6 and I would like to have a computer that can edit basic HD properly.
What I realy dont get is that I know people with laptops that are running AE smoothly and these are much worse than the specs on my machine, some even with only 4 gigs of ram...
Is there something wrong, do I have some sort of frame limiter thats capping at 19 fps? is there some sort of memory leak?
Any help would be much apreciated.
Now the only thing I can think of thats holding me back is the crappy hard drives, every thing else seems like it should at least run text on after effects at 30 fps.

thanks, that at least is enough to get me started, lol I have a deadline tomorrow and have been burning a lot of time on just trying to get this to run smooth.
BTW, I am running the project off of the portable, I switched from the old, but faster harddrive that was sata2 to the portable given I thought that might increase the speed, which it didnt.
what I might do is crack the case and just plug it straight into the computer, though I am hesitant to do so as if I were going to do that, I might as well just purchase a usb 3.0 one and do that so i can get sata 3 out of it, since those cases dont exactly just snap back together.
When I say basic text, I mean layered text, just word after word in order. I honestly dont have any plugins that I know of, (if I had the money for them I would have spent it on a better computer probably) so what I have is what came with the master collection.
And when I say 19 FPS I mean spacebar...
NOW I KNOW, that Im not garunteed 30 fps when running the preview, but when I use the mac, it previews fine... and i just looked up my CPU in comparison to the I5 in the IMAC that I was refering to, and mine is actualy faster according to some benchmarks, granted its not faster than the vast majority of I5s and I7s, but the particular ones in the computers I was refering to, mine is actualy faster over all, so I figure its not a CPU thing (unless its a -our software only works right on INTEL- thing).
Now as far as the 3d camera, yes I am using it, but even when I run the text without a camera function (ie the thing that you have in your comp) or any sort of 3d layering it runs just as slow.
The Audio might be a problem, I used to have a soundcard, but that died about a year ago so I have been using onboard sound (realtek HD something) which truly sucks in comparison to a proper sound card, but I cant imagine the IMACs have anything better, I mean the sound from the Imac kinda sucks alltogether, dosent even have any sort of virtual surround... But a driver issue it could be, realtek is kind of ghetto in that regard.
I will try some of the tips above (the open gl and the preview output and such), and thank you very much.
    *EDIT*
OK, so with the preview output, I have computer monitor only? is that what you ment?
    *EDIT*
OK, so I did the OpenGL thing, removed it, and for a brief few secconds, it started to run at a mix of 25 to 30 fps, then, when I went to play it again, it was back at 19.

  • What resolution do I need in an external monitor for my 15" G4 Powerbook?

Hello mac friends this is my first post I really hope someone can help me out. I need to get an external monitor for my 15 powerbook g4 1.67 w/ 64 mb graphics card. I can not find any monitor on the market whos' native resolution matches that of my g4 (1280x854). Do I need to match the native res? I ideally would like a widescreen b/w 20 and 23", though I am not crazy about the apple displays (mainly the $). I am trying to figure out what native res I need to be looking for in an external monitor, etc. Anyone who can advise would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks- Jon
    PowerBook G4 15inch 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   low res, 1.5gb ram

The fact that you don't need to match the native resolution disguises a great and valuable feature: Your PowerBook can drive monitors higher than its native resolution. Check the specifications for your PowerBook to see how high it can go. (There's a Specifications link at the top of this page.)
For example, my PowerBook G4 native resolution is also 1280x854 like yours. I bought a 20" Apple Cinema Display which is 1680x1050. Is that a problem? No, it's GREAT. Because I didn't just double my screen space, the external more than doubled it thanks to the ability of the PowerBook video card to go beyond the native resolution. My PowerBook's specs say I could run a monitor up to 2048 by 1536 pixels. (Many Windows laptops have the same capability.)
You can go to any computer store and buy just about any monitor that has a DVI or VGA port on it, that is within the resolution range for your PowerBook, and it will work. Dell, Samsung, NEC, etc. should all be OK if you want to save money. DVI is better and plugs in directly, but if you buy VGA, you will need to use the VGA-DVI adapter that came with your PowerBook.
