What can be deleted

Hello everyone, I'm getting out of memory error when ever I try to do anything on fcp 4.5 h.d, I have many months of footage which some I have deleted recently.I am not sure which files at this point that I can delete safely without harming the files that I do want to keep. I don't mind having to re render if thats what I have to do. Thanks for all of your help
fcp4.5 h.d 750gb ram, 160 gig external hard drive.

As I said in my first post, it is rarely the amount of media in a project that causes memory issues.
An FCP project file is really a database with instructions on how to play the media: begin with this clip from here to here, dissolve to THAT piece of media from here to there, etc. You get the picture. In order to be effective, fcp has to keep all that information in active memory. If you've got 30 or 40 sequences in a show, especially on a marginal machine like a ibook, this can cause out of memory issues.
And all it takes is ONE cmyk image to sieze you up. Rather than delete media, make an archive copy of the project, AS OUTLINED ABOVE, and dump the old sequences.
And it's sometimes a good idea to open up the render manager and dump the renders and then re-render. Fewer things for that database to have to remember.

  • N97 What can I delete from C: in order to make spa...

I am using Nokia Messaging with my Gmail account but, due to low memory problems on C, I am obliged to delete my incoming mails almost every hour in order to make space. Problem is that I cannot delete on the phone without sync which means that the mails are also deleted on the server which is not ok if I want to keep some mails for further reference.
So, I have to find more space on C but what can I delete without affecting the normal operation of the phone ?
For instance, can I delete OVI store or APIBridge ?
It is time that Nokia issues a new firmware allowing a better use of the memory !!!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, first you could change messagememory - copy messages from C to E and delete them from C afterwards. Open the onboard browser and delete privacy data.  About messages - you will have to set up your mailaccount again on E - delet whats on C.
All apps as facebook, fring, nimbuzz etc can be installed at E. Install everything possible on E. - You could delete ovistore and use it through the webbrowser instead. - I think Carman does that.

  • Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space without compromising the integrity of the dvd

Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space?  I tried deleting the iMovie events and projects, but then the iDVD would no longer play because it said the movie contents or link was not available.  I was under the impression that once I saved the iDVD that the associated video was saved in that file, not a link to an iMovie event and project.  Can somebody help?  Now I have to find the original footage, re-edit it in iMovie, and start the whole iDVD process over because I deleted the iMovie project and events.

Hmmm, did you actually burn a DVD from the project?

What can I delete from what folders to A) get more space and B) speed up machine.  2009 Imac Intel based Leopard

If you start deleting things in hidden system folders, or in an /Library folder you may very well mess up something.
That is why I say limit what you delete to your User folder only and only those files you've put or created there.  Start messing with anything system or application related without know exactly what you are doing and you risk fubar'ing something.
There are in fact many places in the system areas that will appear to be redundant, but they are not so just because they have similar path or file names.
Also, how much free space do you have with just a freshly rebooted system?  If your system does not have much RAM (given the apps your normally run on it), it may be creating quite a bit of swap space.  That will be flushed out with a reboot, but if your system is RAM limited, then it will just grow back.  In such a case, more RAM would help.
Use Activity Monitor to look at your RAM and swap use over a few days of normal use - look particularly at the page outs, as that will tell you how much virtual memory is actually being used on the drive.  If page outs are high (thousands to 10's of thousands or more) your system is RAM limited, and your drive will be filling up with swap files.

  • What can I delete on my Macbook pro and how?

what prorams can I delete on my macbook pro and how? I heard could delete some preloaded programs on my macbook pro and I would like to know how? I know that I can move app from to the trash to uninstall them but what all preloaded apps can I delete. I tried to delete photo booth, sticky notes, address book and could not so what can I delete and how?

I wasn't aware that you couldn't delete those programs, what happens when you try? Is there some reason that you want to delete them? They don't take up hardly any hard drive space or RAM to use them and they are useful programs, I think. If you're trying to gain more hard drive space, that's not going to do it. If you don't want them in your dock, just drag them out to the desktop and they poof away.

  • My hard drive is TOO FULL - what can I delete ?

My 60 gb. hardrive is now down to 9 gb. and I was wondering what I can safely delete off of here that I don't need. I know the obvious - photos, itunes music & podcasts, etc. But I'm wondering about aliases, etc. or anything else that just hangs around on our machines that we don't need.
Somebody suggested diff. languages since I only speak English so I took those all out of my applications. Now I see that I get a scrambled up window in Appleworks when I've saved a document as Claris 4.0 and it opens it in Appleworks but it still opens. I DON'T want to delete ANYTHING that's going to cause me problems down the line!! I've saved all the languages I've deleted. Any ideas what I may have taken out of appleworks that causes that problem????
Looking forward to hearing from someone !!

You've taken action at the right time, many leave it too late.
You can use Monolingual (link) to remove unwanted languages.
I wouldn't recommend deleting things manually unless you know exactly what that file is, although you can use WhatSize (link) to find large files. Items like alias are so small on disk it's a relatively pointless exercise to spend much time looking for them.
You should consider a larger external firewire hard drive to allow you to store more data. You'll also be able to create duplicates of your valuable data.
    cheers

  • What can I delete to free up more disk space?

I have backed up on my time machine and have deleted all video and some books? but I still didn't free up very much room. when I check Get Info I have a capacity of 79.55 GB and have used 78.7 GB and have available 844.6 MB. I don't know what else I can safely delete?

How much space did the videos/books take up that you deleted? It's possible that the system hasn't recognized that the space they occupied is now free. A reset or complete shutdown will usually fix that.
If you are truly left with only 844 MB after deleting everything that you absolutely have to have on the drive then it might be time for a drive upgrade, but lets see if we can figure something else out first.
I see you said you deleted videos and books, so my next question is what files do you have that are taking up so much space?
Many files can be kep on an external drive for access when necessary, even iTunes music files (which for people like myself can take up a ridiculous amount of space.)
Let us know what sort of files/programs you're working with and we can go from there.

  • What can be deleted to make space

In system 10.4.11 what files can be deleted to make more space. For example can I delete the 0S9 system and OS9 Applications without any impact? I have already used the application to remove unwanted language supports. Any ideas most welcome.
    Thank you

can I delete the 0S9 system and OS9 Applications without any impact?
Yes, you can - assuming you don't need Classic anymore, and have versions of those applications updated for Tiger.

  • What can I delete from Extensions and System folder?

I just installed System 10.4 bundled with Classic Mode on my eMac. There seemed to be a lot of things that got installed that I won't need, such as: printer drivers, iChat, Quicken and World Book Encyclopedia. What can I safely delete from the Extensions folder that will not affect the operating system, keeping in that want to run on programs in Classic Mode? Is there anything else I can delete along these lines that will free up hard drive space? Is there anything I can safely delete from the System Folder?
I chose the Archive and install for installation. It says it created a "Previous System Folder". Can I delete this Previous System Folder to make it run faster?

A standard install loads you up with a pile of unneeded printer drivers, foreign fonts and foreign language support. Did you do the optional install that allows you to omit these space-eaters? If not, as this is a new install, you might consider reinstalling and exercising the optional or custom install options.
Back in the OS9 and earlier days when hard drives were tiny  and RAM was expensive, it was a real help to rid one's self of the extra unused extensions. They had "open" and easily understood file names making it a no-brainer to drag those extensions to an "unused extension" folder outside the System folder.
Of all the eMacs made there were only two basic logic board architectures. The first would accommodate up to 1 GB RAM and the second could handle a total of 2GB RAM. Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button to launch System Profiler.
In Profiler's first screen you can tell which architecture you have. The second line in OS 104 is "Machine Model" followed by a code:
code "PowerMac4,4" --the first architecture, with USB 1.1 and a max RAm of 1GB
code "PowerMac6,4 --that later and desirable USB 2.0 logic board that can do 2GB RAM.
If you have a 4,4 the RAM for that model is listed here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=146&type=Memory
"PC-133" RAM is preferred in 4,4 eMacs for best function.
The same vendor has RAM for the 6,4 here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=223&type=Memory
I've bought 90 percent of my RAM from this vendor for the last decade and can vouch for their product quality and customer service.
The point is that maxxing out your RAM is not expensive and saves you a lot of grief from deleting some file with a cryptic OSX name that the computer really needs.

  • What Can I delete?!

What Can I get rid of? I have deleted mail like everyone has said to but what looks unimportant from this picture that i can delete to get more space! Im really scared i might delete something important so if anyone can please help me it would be amazing!!

Now i have deleted one i went through my other back up and in the file highlighted which is the only one I opened so far all the files seem to be images if i have backed all my photos onto a external hard drive as well as putting this backup onto the hard drive would i be able to delete anything else?

  • Just did an Archive and Reinstall - what can I delete??

Hey!! I just reinstalled to 10.4.8 after all my issues with 10.4.10. I now have the "previous system" folder and I am wondering what I can safely delete.
It looks like there are two copies of all the mac software, but all my software is on the current os. So can I just trash that whole previous system folder? Or do I have to keep anything out of it?
Incidentally, the dude at the apple store did it, and he said he used a different disk for the OS I have now and I should install the Front Row application from my own disk at home. That's totally cool with me but what do you all think of that? And/or could I just drag it from that previous systems folder? Thanks for your help!!
    kathy

You may want to check for any items in the /Library/Applications Support/ folder for any specific folders you may want to transfer to the new installation. Otherwise, you can delete the PSF.

  • Just swept my disk.. what can i delete?? (PRIVATE VAR?)

my private-var-vm is 3.0gb full... what is it, can i delete it?

    what is it
    Virtual memory swapfiles.
    can i delete it?
No. Don't delete anything in /private/ except for the content of /private/tmp/ or /private/var/tmp/. If you want to delete files to make more space available, look at /Library/Printers/ and run Monolingual.

  • Previous systems folder -- what can i delete?

i had to archive my old system and now, in my hard drive, is the "previous systems" folder with the old library and whatnot.
i have moved my personal files (desktop, itunes, word files) into my new system and i'm wondering if i can just delete the entire "previous systems" folder -- or if there are things in there that i should be sure to transfer (like any program or application files), or if deleting that folder might cause any problems.
also, should i just delete the inner "previous system 1" folder (the only folder inside "previous systems") or can i delete the whole folder, prev systems? i don't think it was there before the archive so i assume i can delete it but i wasn't positive.
    help! thanks.

There are some things that might need moving: printer software that you added and so on. I suggest that you use the machine for a week or two and if you're content that all is working normally then you can trash it. That's what I did.
