What can be done to make 5-yr old iMac G4 usable
I know almost nothing about Macs and a friend who bought a secondhand iMac been asking me to help. The machine is very very slow and when Safari connects to the internet, it closes the browser when you try to upgrade Flash, download files, or even stream videos (youTube). From the net, I found steps on how to clear the cache & reset PRAM/NVRAM. I also followed steps to do File System Check which should find and fix errors accdg to what I read.
Nothing worked so my friend gave me the go ahead to reinstall everything & he has all the CDs. After the refresh, the login was faster, apps load faster but when I ran the File System Check it still wouldn't stop finding & returning this error:
"Invalid Leaf Record Count (5 instead of 0)"... I try again & again and was going nuts by this time so I stopped.
When I tried the internet, I was expecting Safari to have been installed but instead IE was there. And the internet connection was ok but I still cant youtube etc. Worse now after a month, my friend said even the internet connection has gone bonkers!
I am at the end of my skills/patience here. I'd appreciate if anyone has any good idea what else I can do to help my friends? Can RAM upgrade help? What is that error? Is it correct IE installed not Opera or Safari?

Mac OS X v 10.2.8 6R73
Processor: 800 MHz
RAM: 256 MB

First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussion forums!
You state he has all the CDs for the iMac. Are these the original disks that came with the computer? Make sure the disks are the original install disks that came with "that" computer or are full retail install disks for 10.2.8 and not machine specific to another Mac or upgrade disks.
How did you reinstall the operating system? Did you reinstall via an Archive & Install or an Erase & Install?
"Invalid Leaf Record Count" error is a serious disk error which I don't believe can be repaired by using fsck or Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" function. You will need a more robust repair utility such as third party Disk Warrior or Tech Tool for OS X. These are expensive though but worth the money for repairing the disk.
A complete erase and install can fix the problem most likely though if you don't care to lose data on the disk. An archive & install is most likely just carrying the disk error to the new install which is why you would need to repair it using Disk Warrior or doing an Erase & Install.
I'm not sure, from your description of the problem with your Safari and IE after the reinstall but I would definitely investigate downloading another browser anyways (after you fix the problems with the disk) that will work better on 10.2.8 for most sites. 10.2.8 is an old OS at this point and many websites have trouble with the browsers that it can use.

I quit and restart both Bridge and PS without success. I don not wish to reboot each time this happens.There's something weird happening on your computer. Bridge should constantly check the file system for changes, and new folders should appear quite soon after they are created. This suggests to me that either Bridge is broken on your computer, or the file system is misbehaving.
A quick fix for Bridge would be to update it to the latest version and/or reset preferences using Ctrl-click Bridge icon. That cures quite a lot of ills.
I have seen Windows Explorer behave strangely at times, when for example icons do not show up on the desktop until you refresh with F5. I have never found an explanation for this. However, if you are only seeing this behaviour in Bridge, then you can discount this.
The other thing which springs to mind is Bridge's problem with broken drives. Bridge builds a list of file system locations which it checks at regular intervals. If one of those locations has a problem, there is a knock-on effect. Maybe Bridge has stopped polling your folders for this reason.
I use a program called Sysinternals 'Process Monitor', which is now owned by Microsoft. It's a bit of a hacker's tool, and one of its jobs is to monitor file system activity by application. If you start it up and narrow activity down to File System and Bridge, you can see what Bridge is doing in real time. You should see it accessing a group of different locations every few seconds. Maybe one of those locations is very slow or inaccessible, and you might see it hang there.
If all that sounds a bit too technical, just have a look at the drives listed in "My Computer" and check they all work properly/promply. -
What can be done to make my capacitive stylus work on my iPad mini?
I have the Griffin Pencil Stylus (which is capacitive), and it will not work on my iPad mini. Sometimes by chance I can make a mark in a drawing app and if I do, I have to press really hard on the screen. It has never worked while putting in my passcode etc. It works fine with my iPhone 4S, but that is not the device I intended it for. Any ideas as to what's going on or if I can do anything to make the stylus work with the iPad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

However, those examples will print what?s written in the immediate code, with no apparent method (that I can) make into a variable. The ?Hello World? example that I find that has a main class is the ones that are failing. The ones that don?t have a main class will print.

Safari Version 7.0.5 (9537.77.4) very slow and frustrating. What can be done to make it faster?

7.0.5 is actually running faster here. Try troubleshooting ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If nothing above helped, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall. -
Number of System Log Errors Increasing During Nightly Backup - What Can Be Done?
Right now, I'm getting quite a number of warnings and errors with my nightly (wbadmin) backups to external USB drive using Windows 8.1 and the Spring Update. Fortunately, the VSS-integrated system image backups are still sound, but it seems as though
Windows 8.1 is becoming less and less aware and tolerant of them. That's not right!
With Windows 8.1 before the Spring Update I was seeing the warnings, but not the FilterManager errors. The update brought the errors.
Perhaps not too many Windows 8 users use wbadmin start backup -vssFull commands to do their backups, but I'm sure a lot of folks running Server 2012 do.
What can be done to make the backup process smoother and eliminate these warnings and errors?
Here's the specific list of warnings / errors I got from last night, which started at 2:00am and ran to 4:26am:
As usual, clicking the Event Log Online Help button yields: "We're sorry, but the page you requested could not be found. You can search on TechNet for more information." Microsoft, you know that needs to be fixed too, right?
The specific command I'm using, via the Task Scheduler, is:
wbadmin start backup -allCritial -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:G:\
For those who might suggest 3rd party backup, bear in mind I very much want the VSS integration that Windows Backup provides, and while wbadmin is producing backups that can actually be restored I can ignore these warnings and errors. But it would
be nice to not have them.
And yes, I've considered 3rd party backup solutions, but while wbadmin is producing VSS-integrated system image backups that can be restored from the Windows startup recovery environment I'd prefer those.

So I have an iphone and for some reason I don't know the password for my Apple ID so I can't download apps and I don't have the password to my email to change it and I don't know the secret questions , what can I do to make a new Apple ID ?
I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account. I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there. On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back. Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email. The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option? -

I've got to agree with Allan. It sounds like the hard drive is corrupt at least. It's possible it might be physically failing. Without backups, it's possible your data is already gone. You need a professional to help you.
If you do not have an Apple Store near you or simply don't have the time to spare, there are some things you can try, but you must understand that it's possible these things could make the chances of recovering your data worse than they already are. Perform the instructions to follow at your own risk!
First, you can try repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility. If that works, see if you can start up the machine. If you can, the very first thing you need to do is back up any data you don't want to lose. You may still need to take other steps, as your system may be damaged as well, but getting the data is the important part.
If Disk Utility cannot repair the problems, you can try DiskWarrior. It can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. However, it also increases the risk of destroying your data if it fails. If it works and you can start up the machine, do the same as I advised for following success with Disk Utility.
If repairs (with either) were successful, but the machine still won't start up, you can try reinstalling the system. Hold down command-R at startup and then just install right on top of the existing system. If all goes well, you'll be able to start up afterwards and can get your data backed up. If all goes badly, it'll further decrease the chances of getting your data back.
If neither can repair the damage, you're in bad shape. You will need a professional to help you, unless you are willing to lose all your data. -

CTS(change and tranport system) is build to manage all changes across system , it takes care of versioning as well.
Usually in production system you can do data loading and other data oriented activities.
If you need to work on object related changes, start from a dev system.

I bought over eBay, and discovered that the logicboard was changed...
Tried few times to restore, but same results.. sometimes the screen becomes completely red.
The display works fine, from time to time it starts correctly and I can activate the phone and play around.
I tried DFU, but I get the error 4013 in iTunes during the restore, then it switches to recovery mode and a further restore gets interrupted.
Is there any deeper way to completely wipe phone's firmware, to make sure there is absolutely no software issue?

what can be done to avoid getting the following error when trying to delete unused clips in Imovie 09 "the operation could not be completed. *** -[__NSArrayM insertObject:atIndex:]: object cannot be nil" I use to get these type of error messages when trying to delete unsused clips from a large event 60 minutes or longer, but now I get this message when trying to reduce a 4 minute event.
Also, does anyone know if there is a limit to the total amount of space that can be taken up by Projects in Imovie 09

It goes something like this...
Put your new drive in the enclosure. Use Disk Utility to format it, etc. I'd give it a slightly different name than the original. Let's say you have Old Disk and New Disk as your drive names. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Old Disk to New Disk. Now you should have an exact copy, which you can test by rebooting and holding down the Option key. Choose New Disk from the list and let it boot, make sure all is well.
Shut down and physically swap the drives. Take Old Disk and put it in the enclosure. Now your system has a new disk with a lot more space and you can reformat your old disk and just use it for large files or whatever. -

We are implementing a process that includes an Adobe Form. This form retrieves some information from our ERP and has some images that represent some executives signatures and companys logo. At runtime, this application seems right, but when you place the mouse over the images a Hand appears and a click is possible. If you click over it, a FileSystem PopUp appears and you can choose a new image. What can be done in our code in order to disable the Link/Hand/Popup action??

You can write a script to make it readonly .
Click on the image element .check the object properties.

hi, JNI function names are Java_Package_classname_functionname. But i have a package+classname itself crossing 32 characters. i need to have more than one native function in the same class. so linker cannot distinguish these names. any workarounds? t
