I'm trying to purchase a song in iTunes and it asks me for the answers to my sercurity question, which I've forgottten as my account was set up a while ago. When I press the link to send the reset details for my security questions, to my email address it comes up with a page saying email sent, check your inbox. I check my inbox and nothing shows up. However, when I make changes to my acount, e.g. change my house address, it will send that email and I will recieve it. What can I do?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of doing so include going to support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.
Setting up a rescue email requires correctly answering two of the questions.

They are going to your Rescue email address, which is not the same as your Apple ID address. It is whatever you set it to be when you set up the account. You can contact Apple's Account Security Team as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699

-If you established a rescue email address, there will be a link on the "Passwords & Security" page of id.apple.com. Clicking the link will send the reset to your rescue email address (NOTE: This is not the same address as your Apple ID email)
-If there is no link on the page, then you didn't establish a rescue email address. Contact AppleCare at 800.694.7466 (If you are in the US), and ask for account security. You will need to answer some questions to verify your identity, AND you will need access to a computer to generate a temporary support pin.

If your device is signed into an old ID of yours that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID. If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.) Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID). Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library). When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was. You won't be able to change your rescue email address until you can answer your questions, if you can't remember your answers and don't have access to that email account then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
