What can i do?? Mac OS X Version 10.5.8

My wife has a vin macbook (13-inch) late 2007 with Mac OS X Version 10.5.8!!!!
But its really slow and i am trying to find out how i can make it faster?
Can i upgrade Mac OS X Version 10.5.8??
If yes which one should i choose?
Finally can i upgrade any hardware part(RAM), to make her mac faster?
Thank you!

First, increase the RAM to not less than 4GB.
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
iCloud system requirements:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
or Mountain Lion:

  • Can we upgare mac os x version from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6?

can we upgrade mac os x version from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 or higer version/

All pre-August 28, 2009 MacBooks with 1 GB of RAM support a minimum of 10.6.8, and can be upgraded to 10.6 via this store purchase:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Getting to 10.6.8 is covered by this tip, which should be read before you even install 10.6:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If you are interested in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, read this tip carefully:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
You do not need to purchase 10.5 to get to 10.6 or later.

  • How can i download Mac OS X version 10.7????

i started using an old macbook, but i cant download to newst updates unless i have Mac OS X version 10.7

What model is your MacBook/ To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The model 1,1 can not run Lion, all others can once you're running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from the Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • What can go wrong with old & new versions on same start up disk

I know Apple have recommended that you should partition your disk and run old and new versions on different sides.
With an imac, I'm thinking that I can't partition without wiping a whole load of stuff and I cant put in a new drive because it's all sealed.
By leaving my mac as it is and having both versions on the same start up, what is the worst that can happen? Will preference settings get confused?
Thanks for reading - hope you have an answer

I had both installed together for a while. I did this before Apple released the guide recommending how it should be done.
They were playing fine together for a while, then suddenly (and I am not sure what I did to trigger this) FCP7 just wouldn't open without generating Qmaster crash reports. I'm not sure what caused these, and I tried every geeky trick I knew to fix it. In the end I had to thoroughly wipe both off my system and I reverted to just 7.
I know from reading this forum that other people have experienced different results.

  • What can Xserve and Mac OS X Server do that Mac OS X and .mac cannot?

After repeatedly bumping up against internal and external hard drive storage limits (easy to do with photography and HD video) I am considering an Xserve for storage space and easy access to files. Some of the features of Leopard Server such as iCal Server, email, and IM sound interesting as well. However, I know nothing about server admin, so I am equally worried about 1) getting in over my head and 2) that an Xserve is overkill. Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

If your concern is storage I'm not sure what you think you'll gain from using an XServe.
The MacPros can handle more internal storage than the XServe, thanks to its four drive bays (vs. the XServe's three).
If you're planning to use the server as a network file store, that's fair enough, but don't think you can do live editing over the network - the throughput is going to be bottlenecked by your network and disk performance over the network is typically much less than local drive. It would be feasible to use it as an archive repository while running the current projects from the local disk, just don't try to edit HD video over the network.
A potentially better solution would be an XServe RAID rather than an XServe - the RAID offers up to 10TB of RAID protected storage which can be directly connected to your workstation, giving you the advantage of local file storage (viable for live editing) without the overhead of the network.
If you do opt for the server route bear in mind that all the other services (email, iCal, IM, etc.) are optional, and you can just ignore them until you're ready to deal with them.
