What can I do to speed up rendering?
THIS QUESTION. HAS. BEEN. ASKED. TO. DEATH. I KNOW
But the answers have become so common that someone like me who knows how to use AE but doesn't know about rendering does not understand the jargon
I rendered a clip using Trapcode Particular and some flux to create a particle trail, and behind that I had a clip of paticular running with some glow. This is it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fedcUIb1OIo
NOW, that render took about maybe 5 minutes? probably less I don't remember, but it was short.
I have renedered large clips in Pr and it takes at max maybe 15 - 30 minutes with tons of effects(short of warp stabalizer, and with every single clip having some type of Magic Bullet Looks effect). That took maybe about an hour for a 4 minute video.
I go into AE, and I create this. https://www.mediafire.com/?iqg25p7i62826iw
If you have Trapdcode, it should open, but since that's just an idea of what I have, hopefully I can explain whats in it.
I have one comp where there's 3D text that has ray traced 3D and been moved to have a kind of corner alignment
The next comp is THAT SAME ONE I JUST POSTED I just shifted it into this project/comp and took out all the backgrounds and other particles, now the only thing there is the "flame" particles. I also tracked that one to move throughout the first 30 seconds and then disappear
Next comp is an audio spectrum, duplicated and fliped so the audio at both ends is the starting frequency.
I precomped a lot of ****, but I cleared out what I didn't need and only have two comps left in the main composition.
Why is it this render is taking 28 hours? Nothing on earth ever took this long for me, and you're talking to the guy who warp stabalized a 2 hour film because he could.(EVEN THAT TOOK 6 HOURS, UNDERSTANDABLE)
What can I do to somehow reduce this time? I've already done the render as a quick time format thing, that reduced it to about 11 hours. But this clip is only 1:35 long.
whyyyyy

Yeah, you get what you asked for - you used one of the worst 3D raytracers on this planet without GPU acceleration and shutting it off makes all the difference. Really nothing unusual here. That is why people use plug-ins like Element 3D or Invigorator or in CC Cineware...

My Mac is slowing down. What can I do to speed it up?
My Mac is recently showing signs of slowness. What can I do to speed it up? It is MacBook Pro (Non-Retina) Early 2012.
First: check your hard disk's free space is between 1x and 2x your RAM. This is nedded for a good virtual memory operation.
Be sure the HD is OK (check SMART Status in System Profiler) and verify the volume in Disk Utility.
Download Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner and perform:
1)
- premission control
- scripts cleaning
- prebindigs rebuilding
Restart when asked.
2) restart MLCC and perform all & deep cache cleaning.
Restart
The computer should be slow but will become faster as much as you use it.
Be sure the HD is OK (check SMART Status in System Profiler) and verify the volume in Disk Utility.
Good Luck!!! -
Mac book pro is running very slow what can i do to speed it up?
mac book pro is running very slow what can i do to speed it up?
Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -

You could post in the notebook and Mac OS forums, look under the hood and diagnose the patient. Figure what you did or are doing. You can also relolad the OS and files from backup.

Restore your phone as new, not using ANY backup at all, and reset it up from scratch.

Boot-up slow, NetFlix streaming erratic, wifi will not automatically connect after putting computer in sleep mode, Studio One 2 glitches after running for a while. None of these problems existed until I upgraded to Mavericks.

What can I do about constant re-rendering? :(
Recently I have encountered a problem. Here's an example of what happens.
I import a file into final cut, drag into my time-line, render all and
begin cutting. Now... suppose I want to check my e-mail or switch to another
application for some reason. I switch to that other application and when I
switch back to final cut everything needs to be rendered again. I get that
red bar at the top of the time-line every single time I click away from final
cut. Even if I render then save it doesn't matter. If I leave final cut and come back it means i have to render all over again.
What can i do to solve this?
Is there anyone that can help?#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

In addition to deleting files, what can I do to speed up my MacBook?
Hello!
My MacBook Pro (mid-2010 w/ 16gb of memory and 250gb hard drive) has been running really slow. I know I need to delete a ton of files as my internal disk is near full. My questions are:
My system report says the majority of disk space is being taken up by "Other". What can I delete to whittle that down?
How can I use this EtreCheck report to improve my MacBook's performance?

Thank you!"etrecheck" is of no use for solving this problem.
For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
For ODS:
security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
For GP:
security execute-with-privileges /A*/GrandPerspective.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal. -
What can I do to speed up uploading a pdf file that needs to be exported into Word?
I have been trying to upload a 1 page pdf file for exportation into Word for the last couple of days. Every time I try to upload it into Adobe ExportPDF, the file just shows that it is still uploading and it does this for several hours (isn't finished after 12 hours).
I uploaded a much larger pdf document earlier this week (over 64 pages) for editing and it uploaded that book fairly quickly and converted it into Word without any problems.
Any suggestions on what the problem might be or what I could do to speed things up? I only need to be able to edit a couple of words near the top of the page. How large is the file? The size in pages is not important, what matters is the size in megabytes and your broadband speed.

What can I do to speed up my iPad?
My iPad is really slow. what can I do??
Diavonex wrote:
Double-click the Home button; hold Apps down (in the Task Bar) for a second or two until you see the minus sign. Tap and close all inactive Apps.
Yup. This trick works for me every time.
If you've updated to iOS 5.1, you can swipe four fingers up across the screen (instead of double-clicking the Home button) to reveal the task bar of active Apps (along the bottom of the screen). Then, as Diavonex wrote, just hold your finger down over one of the App icons until they all start shaking and a little red circle (with a white minus sign) appears in the top left corner of each. Tap the red circles one by one until all the Apps are gone. Now your iPad should run quicker. Do this every time you feel it's a bit sluggish. -

What should I do to speed up performance on my MacBook. Should I move my music or photos?
Well.....which MacBook? How much ram? Which version of OS X? How much free space on the hard drive? Need more info in order to offer any suggestions.

Had no problem with Firefox, when I upgraded to Firefox4, things started to be extremely sluggish and slow. Tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox, however, that really messed things up, could not start computer. After finally getting it to work again, things just work so slow and sluggish. What can I do to get it working as it did before?
You can upgrade your iMac's memory to as much as 6 GB. I recommend you get all you can afford. The 1 GB you have is not an abundant amount.
Purchase memory from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. Memory from other sources has been known to be unreliable. Installing it yourself is simple.
I want to add an external hard drive to save my work, and plan to use Time Machine; I do have Firewire. However since my system is a 10.5.8, will everything still work after I upgrade the operating systems, and is there a best way to do that? I want to start with the right external hard drive.
That's a good idea. All you need to do to make Time Machine work is to purchase an external hard disk drive and plug it in. Time Machine pretty much does the rest.
FireWire is preferable but USB is OK. Find an external hard disk of at least twice the capacity as your existing internal hard disk. OWC sells a large variety of external HDs.
Memory at 10 items 165.97GB available. What does this mean?
That is not memory, it is the amount of available storage remaining on your iMac's hard disk. 166 GB is a lot.
