What can Java inside cell phone do?

hello,
i would like to know what can Java inside my cell phone do? can it:
1) run in a background
2) initiate a phone call
3) send an sms or receive an sms
4) can it control bluetooth and to what extend
what are things that java cannot do?
thank you very much!

Hi,
J2ME apps run in sandbox mode. Things can be done using various APIs. To
answer your specific questions:
1) depends on the host device implementation, this is not defined by JCP
2) AFAIK not (due to security). There might be an API however that allows you to
do this on certain devices.
3) Yeah, no problem. See http://java.sun.com/products/wma/
4) Depends on APIs provided by device manufacturer. JCP defined http://www.jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=82.
The things J2ME can not do are mostly features like accessing your phone
book, use built-in camera (unless APIs are provided), floating point math
operations, ...
Reading J2ME related JSRs from http://www.jcp.org/ will give you the overview
of what's defined and can be expected from all compliant phones. Other
features may or may not be implemented.
Hope this helps,
Peter

  • WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CELL PHONE AND TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP COMBO?

I’d like to see what everyone here thinks is the best CELL PHONE and TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP combination to own this year now that the CES show is coming to a close.  So post up what you think is the ideal combination from what has been announced.  Maybe, just maybe, Best Buy will listen and insure they carry the products we want.
    My vote goes to:
PHONE = Samsung Galaxy Note LTE (unlocked - carrier independent)
TABLET/ULTRABOOK/LAPTOP = Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 with Windows 8 and its’ IPS touch screen
(Posted this in the Cell Phone AND Tablet forums)

    Blackberry 9810
efficient keyboard for quick access to functions.  How many other phones have 26 quick keys to dial a number?
convenient one handed operation on the bus because it has a trackpad
great battery life with the slower processor
user replaceable battery.  You can change a battery for the cost of a good dinner.  Other phones have sealed batteries that force you to get a hair dry to rip the battery out.  Basically they force you to get a new phone....SCAM
durability..... seen too many cracked Apple screens.  Takes a lot of punishment without needing a THICK "bumper"
brightness.... notice how dim iPhone screens are on bus compared to other phones?
data compression.... doesn't  rack up my data plan.  Doesn't have Siri.  Blackberry uses 1/3 or 1/6 the data compared to other phones.  Very important, especially when travelling
BBM saves me money when texting with other international BBM users.
the 9810 sliding mechanism means the phone is compact when not used, but grows in size when needed
the 9810 keyboard does not shrink my viewing area when I'm typing
    Blackberry Playbook
plays flash websites.... i got tired of Apple forcing websites to create an App to work (scam)
fits in my purse and pocket
dual speakers without a dock..... it's amazing the audio quality
    stereo microphones
smart bezel where the frame is an added touchpad functionality
With the upcoming OS update next month, Blackberries can take remote control of the Playbook tablet.... HOT as the phone keyboard can be used as Playbook tablet keyboard and phone screen become a mouse!

  • What are these blue cell phones doing in my Safari feed reader?

I opened my RSS feed reader today and all I see are blue cell phones with a message that says, "Ever been travelling and lost your *%% Read more…"
I assume this is some kind of adware and I'd like to get rid of it. Any suggestions? Never had this kind of problem in Firefox on my PC.

    Same here.
It did go away when I trashed the plist file, so you may want to try that.
Or maybe not, because now it seems the news reader in Safari is going nuts. It is constantly picking up feeds I've already read and showing them as new. And a couple of the folders will not get rid of the numbers in parenthesis showing how many unread feeds are within it. I have one stuck at (68) with no new feeds within it.
All this is basically making the news reader in Safari worthless. Any good suggestions for an alternative?

  • Minor prob - with Java on Cell phone

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong area, please let me know. I purchased an LG8100 phone, and a SanDisk 1 gb memory card. I then downloaded songs to the memory card. On my phone, I selected the option of scanning the headset for any new songs, and usually the new songs will be picked up. However, last night when I added more songs, I got this message after the scan: java.lang.NullPointerException Code 932-B. I don't suppose someone could help me understand this? Please.

    From Google:

I had the same problem and then my phone wouldn't turn on at all (got the white telus screen and thats it) so they sent it out, considered it a DOA and gave me a new phone but now the music player won't read the music files i have on my miniSD even though they worked just fine on my old phone yet it will read and transfer pix no problem....it gives me an error everytime i try to play music of: java.lang.NullPointerException Code 932-B
i took it back to telus and they said it's my card but then why did it work in my old phone and why will it work for pix?
can anyone help me? it's great having an mp3 phone that won't play....i miss my music at the gym

okay so i finally decided to sit down with my phone and figure out what was going on with it and i'm sorta glad to say that after taking all 150 songs off my SDcard then putting them back on 4 at a time....i dunno where i get my patience from.....i found out that it had "issues" with 2 songs grrrr! but ya it still does the restarting thing....i guess it's a quirk that has to be lived with.
    Good luck!

  • What's a good cell phone from Cingular that integrates well with iSync

    Hello
I just purchased a Nokia 6102i from Cingular after their sales lady said the phone worked with iSync. I told her I didn't see the model listed on the Apple iSync supported phones web page, but she said not to worry. Well, the phone just arrived and when I tried to iSync it with my Address Book, I'm getting an iSync window saying: "This device is not supported by ISnyc."
No big deal, I'll just return the phone, but next attempt, I want to get a model from Cingular that works well with iSync. Can anyone advise me? Perhaps a Razor, but what I might really want is a smart phone.
    Appreciate any comments, thanks
    Craig

I can answer the last part of that question. I'm disappointed the Nokia 6102i will not transmit photos via bluetooth to my Mac. iSyncing addresses and calendar works like a champ, just not sending photos (and I suppose other files) from the phone. However, on my MBP, I can open up the Bluetooth File Exchange program and both get the 6102i pics, as well as send photos to the phone. So, not bad, there is a work around.

  • Connecting laptop to internet via cell phone

I heard i can use my cell phone to connect my laptop to the internet, i currently have a lg envy touch , with a 25 megabyte plan which would not be enough as I am wanting to get rid of current dsl plan and wanting to use my wireless plan as my only paid source of internet connection in my home.
I can upgrade plan to unlimited for 29.99 per month which is what i currently pay for my home dsl.  I was told by verizon rep i could use a smartphone ( droid/ droid incredible) to set up a wireless connection in which i could also use my ipod and nintendo dsi to connect to internet as well at the same time as the laptop.
So my thinking is i add another line to my 2100 minute family plan for additional monthly cost of 9.99 get the droid for 199.99 with the unlimited plan of 29.99 bringing my total monthly bill to 170.00 minus taxes. I currently only use about 900-1000 minutes but the savings of dropping minutes just doesnt seem worth it to me as I have children on my plan and their minutes will increase at some point and I would rather be locked in to a plan that gives me more than needed.
So I am wondering if others on this forum could give me their opinion/advise?
Does anyone else use the unlimited 29.99 plan as their only source of internet connection? and how fast/slow etc?
If it matters I will be using the internet connection in Pasadena Texas and mainly we use the internet for general searches on basic info, job searches, facebook,  ipod music, no gaming or anything complicated, just a typical basic internet family use.
    Thank you so much!
    Shannon

In addition to the unlimited $29.99 data plan, you would also need a $29.99 tethering plan, so it would cost you $60 a month - and the connection would not be as good as your DSL.  And we use our DSL to connect to a router and have several laptops and desktops using our DSL, which would not work with a tethered connection.  My advice - skip the tethering and keep the DSL.

  • What to do with old phone when Upgrading (NE2 plan) ?

I have an LG DARE that is 20 months old and still works perfectly - screen in excellent (non-scratched) shape; had had a "protector" on it ...
What do people do with these older phones? Is there a Market to sell them some place? Or do I just recycle via the VZN store?
    Thanks

You can donate your cell phone to Cell Phones for Soldiers.  Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to turn old cell phones into more than 12 million minutes of prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. The phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
Using a padded envelope, you can mail your unwanted cell phone to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence,  which collects and distributes working cell phones to victims of domestic violence so that they may call 911 for help in emergencies.
Phones For Life gives seniors a lifeline by providing them with a 911-capable working mobile phone, enabling them to call for emergency help should they suffer an accident or emergency.  Their drop-off locations are in a number of states, or you can donate your phone by mail.

  • Socket connection to a cell phone by using emulator

    Hi,
I have been studying on the client-server communication between my cell phone and the emulator.
I want to connect to my cell phone from emulator.
For this reason, I can get my cell phone ip with getLocalAddress() method by using an instance of ServerSocketConnection.
However, my cell phone ip changes constantly(once per second). Because I can't get the true ip of my cell phone at that time, I can't connect to my cell phone from emulator.
Is there anyone who knows what I must do?
    Thanks in advance.

How doesn't a cell phone have an IP?
Each cell phone has an IP.
This IP is generally assigned as private by some operators Whereas, some operators assign a public IP to cell phones.
I learned that my operator assigns public IP to cell phones and I wanna try to connect to my cell phone by giving IP address of it.
I can read the IP of my cell phone dynamically. But, my problem is that my cell phone IP changes constantly.
What should I do to make the ip address of cell phone static?
    Thanks.
