What can Lightroom do that Photoshop 5 cannot do?

I already purchased Photoshop 5 and have started trying to learn how to use it. In the box I found a discount certificate for Lightroom. I expected Photoshop to be comprehensive enough that it would include Elements, Lightroom, etc. Is this not the case?

There is a lot of overlap between Lightroom and Bridge+Photoshop.
If you need common access (i.e. you work on photos as a team), I'd suggest Bridge+Photoshop, if edits are done by one person, you may prefer Lightroom's local catalog.
Both have the same core develop features (as provided by Adobe Camera Raw), but Lightroom has some value added, and some people prefer Bridge...
There are many threads (and a tutorial by J.Kost) comparing the two workflows, but I've no links for you.
PS - some of my favorite Lr features (not in Photoshop) are:
* edit history
* before/after compare
* publishing
* plugins

You don't mention anything about the music files on your computer that were used to copy into iTunes. If you have moved those files to a different location on you PC you will get that error message from iTunes. This is because iTunes will look for the music files in the original location that they came from on your PC when they were copied. If this is the case you have to tell iTunes to look in the new location for the music files or move the music files back to the original location.

  • What can Lightroom do for me that Photoshop and Bridge can't?

I've been using Creative Suite Design Pro since CS2 (now on CS4).  Lately I've been getting more into photography and have started hearing and reading about Lightroom.  Does Lightroom have features that Photoshop Extended and Bridge in CS don't?  Can it do things for me that I can't already do in CS?  Bottom line - what makes it worth the purchase price?             Thanks, Mary

If you are comparing Lightroom to Photoshop CS specifically, the biggest difference you are going to see is the Lightroom capabilities compared to what Camera Raw in Photoshop CS will do.  Lightroom has all the features of the latest Camera Raw.  As far as Photoshop itself is concerned, I haven't used CS4, but the big feature that I saw an improved in CS3 was the Photoemerge feature.  It works so much better, and I understand it is even better in CS4.  I'm sure there are many other improvements in the latest version of Photoshop, but I have decided to wait for the next version before I upgrade.

  • What can Aperature do that I can't get elsewhere?

I'm looking through the specs on Aperature.. and for the life of me, I can't seem to get my head around what the product offers that the combination of iPhoto and Photoshop can't handle.
iPhoto organizes, does simple red-eye correction, and can print a book. Photoshop handles the heavy lifting, retouching, image control... Why do I need this product? What am I missing?
The only thing I see is that I can move between Aperature and Photoshop easier than with iPhoto. And I'd have greater control over book design. Is that it? iPhoto handles RAW images. Am I wrong?

You're missing the point. Aperture is about speeding up a professional photographer's workflow (quote from apple.com/aperture):
"Featuring a RAW-focused workflow, Aperture makes RAW as easy as JPEG, letting you import, edit, catalog, organize, retouch, publish, and archive your images more effectively and efficiently than ever before. From capture to output, you work directly with your RAW files, never having to first convert them into another format before viewing, adjusting, organizing, or printing them"
Key is it's faster to do this whole process. If you watch the videos, they all have something in common -- LOTS of images (say, 1000 a day), that have to be compared, and reduced to somewhere between 10 (for an SI article) and 100 (for a wedding photographer), very quickly. Retouching (photo editing) is part of things, but certainly it's not the focus of things.
The ability to group photos into stacks and find the best shots (out of 8 or 10) I'm finding quite useful. While I primarily do landscape (and as a hobby), I often take a similar shot 10 times at different shutter speeds, apertures, and exposures (a little bracketing), so I can find one that captures what I want, exactly. Aperture lets me find that shot quite quickly. Then, at the moment, I am doing most of my editing work in Photoshop, because I understand how to do that better, and because I have some tools (Nik Sharpener Pro, and Noise Ninja, specifically), which do things much better than Aperture can, and because I like the ability to later "tinker" with the levels, curves, and saturation layers I've created. Oh, and I use masks. Lots. I LOVE masks. But this is all really the high-end core Photoshop feature set, and really stuff used for fine art photographers, more than wedding/sports folks. So I still use 2 tools. But I like aperture for rating, tagging, and organizing. I've used iView Media Pro (paid for it), and Bridge, but I like Aperture better, already. And I know it will improve.

  • IWeb had a password protected site capability. Now what can I use that gives me an equivalent functionality?

    Greetings All,
I took over the web site for a club using iWeb. This worked great for several years (2009 to June 30, 2012). I still use iWeb today (minus the password protected members only portion). We have a need for a members only section of the website that is password protected. I put our records, roster, financial notes, members visual directory, etc behind this password protected site. I used iWeb and it was very easy. I have not had this functionality since July 1, 2012 with the demise of mobile me. This is very important to our club and I want to know what other product I can use to make a website with password protection? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

As Roger has already stated, this password protection needs to be set up on your server directly with the loss of this function with the demise of MobileMe.
There is another alternative however and that would be to re-build/transfer your site to one of the Content Management Systems, such as Joomla, Drupal or WordPress.org if your web host offers this facility.  Most good web hosts will allow you to install the CMS's on your server and some have one click installation available.
It is very easy to set up password protected parts of your site using a Content Management System such as Joomla, because it is linked to a database that you need to link to.  If you install it manually on your host, then you need to set up the database too and then link together, but most now have one click install, where the database is set up for you automatically - not as much flexibility like this over a manual install, but you can set up protected areas of the site and allow memebers to join and set up parts of the site that only members can get to. You can also set up different grades of membership too, so some can see some parts and others not.
If your site is in need to a revamp then consider this, otherwise stick with iWeb and just set up password protection directly on your server.

  • Not really using my iPad.  What can it do that my iTouch can't do?

I wanted an ipad desperately as soon as the first one was intruduced.  I finally got an iPad 2 in December.  I'm an Apple fanatic.  Surprisingly, I have hardly used it.  I use my 4 year old iTouch throughout every day as a PDA, alarm clock, to check emails, keep contacts, track my instrument practices, play games with relatives out of state.  But I find that most of my info doesn't go back and firth from my iTouch to my ipad.  The iPad is bigger and doesn't fit in my pocket or purse, so it gets forgotten for weeks at a time.  (I use my Kindle for bedtime reading because it doesn't have backlighting.) My iPad2 cost over $700 and it is sitting there.  Any suggestions on how I can put it to work?
The biggest help would be how to use both and have all the info be shared.  For example, I use an app to geep track of guitar practices on my iTouch, I have the same app on my ipad, but the data doesn't carry over.  I signed up for iCloud, but it is not helping.
I use WiFi but not the 3G because I don't pay for the extra data plan.

iCloud wouldn't be compatible with your iPod as it requires IOS 5. I was in the exact opposite situation. As soon as I got my iPad I sold my iTouch.
I find it much more useful for email, gaming, reading, productivity (documents, budgeting, music/video creation, photos..), mirroring is really useful for presentations and also showing things to others in the house etc.
I'm guessing you don't have an iPhone, that took the place of my iPod. When i'm out of wifi range I use tethering as I didn't feel the need for an extra 3G plan either.
More info on your needs or what you hope to accomplish would help.

You go to https://iforgot.apple.com/appleid if you don't remember the ID.
If you know the ID but not the password, you go to https://iforgot.apple.com and reset it.
If you can't do either of those, you call Apple and speak to someone in account security.

  • Whats the advantage of using Lightroom vs just Photoshop itself?

I heard Lightroom is Adobe's photo specialty program? What can it do that Photoshop can't do?

    Read the
    b Lightroom
    and
    b Aperture
forums to help understand what this new
    i killer app
category can do for digital photographers. Another good source of understanding is the Aperture tutorial videos at Apple's website. By perusing the videos you can get an idea of what these new
    i killer apps
    can do.
They are not direct competitors to PS, nor are they simply complementary apps to PS,
b they are in a different application space entirely.
Of course there is overlap among the apps. PS as the world's premier image editing app can accomplish (albeit relatively very slowly) most of the things Aperture or LR can do. Similarly, limited editing is available in AP/LR, or either app will open an image in an external editor like PSE with a single keystroke sequence if necessary. However for many photogs 90+% of pix are fully edited in Aperture without needing to enter PS.
Most photogs can suffice very well with inexpensive Photoshop Elements v6 plus either Aperture v2.1 or Lightroom v1.4, Aperture being the superior app on strong Mac hardware. LR runs pretty well on lesser boxes and also runs on PCs which Aperture does not.
Many PSCS users do use the Adobe Bridge/PSCS/Camera RAW app combo to address the Aperture/Lightroom space, but Bridge/PSCS/CR is a far inferior solution from a workflow speed standpoint for DSLR photogs. Generally folks doing so are PSCS-experienced pros either doing very low volume (the real benefit of Aperture/Lightroom shows up as volume increases, with Aperture IMO superior) or simply reluctant to change. Note that although many pro DSLR photogs often do shoot in batches of 500+, by "as volume increases" I mean batch DSLR captures in a 50+ volume, not
i "processing a very, very large number of files"
    or
    i "thousands of files. ."
See below regarding v2 which you probably should wait for, but I strongly recommend that every DSLR photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD
b Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5
(Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Have the CD and proper hardware configured prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
Aperture version is now at v2.1, and a new version of the Luna/Long tutorial is available for preorder:
b Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2
(Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008). I have not reviewed the v2 tutorial but I have preordered it from Amazon.com.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture/Lightroom usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial IMO is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category. Even if you settle on LR for reasons of lesser hardware working the tutorial CD is the way to learn the concepts of this new killer-app category.
I personally have found that as my own hardware has evolved (Aperture is a terrible hardware hog), and as my Aperture skills continue to evolve, I use Aperture for more and more of my workflow. I find the primary limitations being (a) my own skillset (after thousands of hours with Photoshop I tend to fall back to old PS solutions even when other apps are far superior) and (b) hardware limitations. My own usage evolved from G4 Powerbook to Macbook Pro to (recently) a loaded Mac Pro.
One thing I am quite sure about is the value of Aperture/LR workflows for most (some PS experts will of course always prefer the slower, expensive full-service app that they are already very familiar with) DSLR photogs. The specifics of how each individual evolves his/her own workflow will vary.

  • What Can FCE HD 3.5 Do That Premiere or Vegas Can't?

    Hello,
With iMovie '08 not offering you much control (no timeline), the next piece of software up the Apple ladder appears to be Final Cut Express HD 3.5. But at £199 I'd be interested to know, what can it do that PC alternatives such as Adobe Premiere Elements and Sony Vegas Movie Studio can't? Both of these applications are £60, making Final Cut Express more than 3 times as expensive!!! Can it really offer you more than 3 times the amount of control? What's so good about it?
I'd be interested to hear from experienced people

    Reuben,
I just recently switched to FCE after using Sony Vegas Movie Studio for a few years. I do my video editing on the family computer which we replaced with a Mac and I needed new video software.
Movie Studio (at least the version I was using, v4 ?) limited me to 3 video tracks and 3 audio tracks. FCE allows up to 99 video and audio tracks. I've never used anywhere near that many, but my most recent project used 4 video tracks, it would have been more difficult to do it in Movie Studio. There's 12 compositing modes for blending the video layers, in MS I don't remember being able to select the mode, it was just a straight blend (depending on opacity).
I find the control of motion events (pan, zoom, etc.) to be much finer in FCE than MS. I can drag objects by the mouse, or type in the exact numbers. These motion events can have many control points or keyframes along a path, and unlike MS, the path can be curved.
Although I haven't used it yet, I understand the color correction tools are much better than in MS or any comparable software.
FCE includes Soundtrack for doing Foley effects, background sounds, and music, as well as LiveType which includes some pretty cool text effects and titles.
As far as being 3 times the amount of control, you would probably be the only judge of that for your circumstances. I do mostly home videos and the like, but a lot of higher end production and broadcast stuff is done on Final Cut Pro and I like being comfortable with the interface if I ever need to go that way.

Downloaded IOS 7 and now I do not have a dictionary in iBook.  This is very frustrating.  What can be done to fix this issue?

I've got to agree with Allan. It sounds like the hard drive is corrupt at least. It's possible it might be physically failing. Without backups, it's possible your data is already gone. You need a professional to help you.
If you do not have an Apple Store near you or simply don't have the time to spare, there are some things you can try, but you must understand that it's possible these things could make the chances of recovering your data worse than they already are. Perform the instructions to follow at your own risk!
First, you can try repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility. If that works, see if you can start up the machine. If you can, the very first thing you need to do is back up any data you don't want to lose. You may still need to take other steps, as your system may be damaged as well, but getting the data is the important part.
If Disk Utility cannot repair the problems, you can try DiskWarrior. It can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. However, it also increases the risk of destroying your data if it fails. If it works and you can start up the machine, do the same as I advised for following success with Disk Utility.
If repairs (with either) were successful, but the machine still won't start up, you can try reinstalling the system. Hold down command-R at startup and then just install right on top of the existing system. If all goes well, you'll be able to start up afterwards and can get your data backed up. If all goes badly, it'll further decrease the chances of getting your data back.
If neither can repair the damage, you're in bad shape. You will need a professional to help you, unless you are willing to lose all your data.

I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

  • What can I use as Microsoft office

What can I use that is similar to Microsoft office for iPad?

There are a number of apps that are compatible with Office documents. As Simon said, Apple makes iOS versions of their own iWork apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) that can be purchased separately. There are also 3rd party combined suites that cost less than the separate Apple apps. Ones often recommended include Documents 2 Go,  Quickoffice and Office2 HD.
If you want access to the actual Microsoft Office applications and can accept needing a network connection whenever you want to use the apps, a server-based solution such as CloudOn might be an option for you.
You'll find a number of other threads on the subject if you want to look for additional information and opinions.
    Regards.
