What Can Logic Pro 8 Do that LP 7 Can't?

My question is... What will I be able to do with LogisStudio/Logic Pro 8 ( besides getting rid of the XSkey ), that I can't already do with Logic Pro 7?
Is it really worth the upgrade of $199.00 to have a different GUI & no need for an XS key?

It seems to have fixed a number of long-standing bugs. For instance, bouncing a track almost always ended up with a little glitch at the beginning of the bounced file. That's fixed.
I've had my end-of-song marker move mysteriously for no reason at all. That seems to have been fixed.
Waveburner actually can now burn CDs and you can use MatchEQ and multi-pressor with it. I believe a lot of people had trouble with it before.
There is a 33 page "What's new in Logic Pro 8" PDF here:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/NewFeatures_in_Logic_Pro8.pdf
You should take a look at that. Not everything there is something you can't currently do - some of it is simplified workflow - but there are a fair number of new, but little features.

  • Can Logic Pro work with soundfont (sf2) files?

Just curious. I have Garageband and the DLS Music Player has no way to change banks or presets for downloaded sf2 files except by sending a "program change" event from a midi controller. Can logic pro do that? I.e., if I load an sf2 file, can it use different banks and presets within that sf2 file, or is it limited to only the very first of each like Garageband?

Oh, I see, you don't have Logic yet - well, what I meant was that, once you've got your sf2 files into the EXS, just have a track for each different sound (open up an EXS24 on each track). If you need to use a lot of tracks, you can use Logic's 'Bounce in Place' feature, which instantly creates an audio file for you from the software instrument region you've created for any particular sound, so you don't need to think about banks of presets or program changes etc..
Logic comes with a vast array of software instruments and presets for them, along with a huge number of loops, if that's your thing - you may well find that good quality sounds that you want are already there and you won't need to use soundfont files anyway. If you've been using Garageband and want to take your work further, Logic is probably the next, well, logical step.

  • Can logic pro read sound fonts?

I am currently trying to use Garageband and have reached a couple of cripling limitations.
    1) the orchestra instruments I need are not supported (oboe d'amore and baritone oboe)
    2) there are free sound fonts available which contain good samples of these instruments but Garageband can only read the FIRST instrument from a sound font?  Which basically (in my opinion) means it cannot read a sound font.
Can Logic Pro read soundfonts correctly?  Can I use all the instruments from a sound font using Logic Pro?

    jimka_2001 wrote:
When you say "can convert sound fonts"  do you mean just the first instrument in the sound font, or all of the instruments in a single sound font?
All of the instruments get converted into single patches located inside a folder. Only one set of samples from the soundfont exist, but each patch from the soundfont is available as a single entity. In other words, you don't select the soundfont and have individual patches available within the SF, each patch is loaded as a separate instrument.
Which makes me think... are you sure that Garageband isn't doing this?

  • Is there a version of Logic Pro X that can be installed on a Mac Book Pro with OS X Version 10.7.5 ?

Is there a version of Logic Pro X that can be installed on a Mac Book Pro with OS X Version 10.7.5 ?

No.. Logic Pro X requires 10.8.4 or later....
To Purchase and install Mountain Lion these days.. you must buy a download content code from Apple directly... It is no longer available directly via the Mac App Store as an item you can select and buy...
If you are in the US then this link will help you...

  • How many times can Logic Pro 9 be installed on different machines?

I'm getting a new computer and wondered if I could reinstall Logic on the new computer without purchasing it again.
    Thanks!

    garfen,
No. You still need to initially install using the DVDs you purchased.
You can pick up a DVD drive for $30 from Amazon (Their basic drive which works very well) or borrow one..and install from that..
    Or
You can use Remote Disk if you still have your original Mac that had a DVD drive built in..
    Or..
Use your old Mac (or a friends) to create DMG (disk images)..from your DVDs..  save them to an ext drive and install from those images... (This is the method I used)
Once the next major version of Logic Pro is released (whenever that may be) this situation will likely be resolved as there will probably be only one way to purchase Logic Pro and that will be downloading via the App Store but for now, we do have this unfortunate situation... where the App Store and DVD versions are actually two different products still... Logic Pro and Logic Studio respectively... and are not interchangeable in regards to your situation.

  • Can logic pro 9 be upgraded if i have the Express version?

    HI,
Can logic pro 9 be upgraded if i have the Express version?
because when i try to do it, ask me for my Logic Studio SNr. and i just copy my Logic Express SNr. and doesn't work !
    Is that normal?

I'm not sure I understand the wording of your question.
If you mean "Can I upgrade Logic Express 9 to Logic Pro 9?" the answer is yes, you can.
When you get the upgrade, if you already had LE9 installed on your system, the installer will already know your existing serial number, and it will be asking you for your new serial number of the upgrade. If you are trying to put in your old serial number here, this won't work, it's the serial number of the upgrade it's asking for.
If you are having serial number issues and believe you are using the correct serial numbers, then you'll need to contact Apple for help.

The installer for Logic Pro 8 has a bug which keeps it from operating in Lion or Mt. Lion.  Use the program Pacifist to install it.

  • Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Have you set up any security on the Mac Connection Sharing?
Sorry but I don't use that so I'm not familiar with the settings.
But if you haven't setup and security the iPhone might not mind but I know most Windows computers do not like to connect to Open WiFi. and make sure it is WPA or WPA2.
Then again it may be a setting in the connection sharing like some type of MAC filtering or it may simply be that Mac OS X connection sharing only allows one connection at a time. Try disconnecting your phone and then connect the PC.
As to Linc's response about Windows.
Windows basically does care about connecting to open, unsecured, WiFi. But it will normally pop up a windows asking "Are myou sure you want to connect to this open network". And a simple click on yes will get you connected and an IP address.
So this is clearly a Mac OS X problem.

Is your MacBook compatible with Mavericks? Open  > About this Mac > More Info, and you will see the MacBook model you have got. Then, check in this site if it's supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
If your Mac is not compatible, OS X 10.7.5 is the most recent version for your Mac. Also, copy the whole message you see when you open the Mavericks installer

  • I lost my Logic Pro box and disc, I can't find my serial number. What should I do?

I lost my Logic Pro box and disc, after it upgraded to 9.1.4, it asked me about serial number, but I lost it...
I can't find my serial number. What should I do? (I baught it last year.)

    Hey Rickstertw,
I think there are two ways to do this.  Open Logic Pro, then in the menu tab, click on Logic Pro in the upper left hand corner, then choose About Logic Pro.  Another window will come up, and you should be able to see the serial number just below your name under "Licensed to" - that is, presuming this is a licensed to you copy!  :-)
If for some reason it doesn't come up there and you registered the product with Apple, then call the support number and if you can verify your information with them, they should be able to give it to you.
    Regards
    Joyce

  • [Logic Pro X] 13" Macbook Air - Can handle?

    Hello everyone!
For the last couple of weeks, I'm just going crazy about my computer, which I have been using for music production / composing. But I have to tell you that I'm really fed up with this. So, I want to get an upgrade of my life. To Macbook!
So, I have been reading forums, watching videos etc. about Macbook Air. Which, to be honest, a dream come true for me, because I am constantly going out of country and travelling because my fiancée is from another country. Air is lightweight, slim, and what I need.
But there is a problem that I am constantly thinking about, which is that I have a low budged and can't afford a buffed up Macbook Pro.
I won't push the Logic so hard, I will use like 8-10 Tracks. Not so heavyweight plug-ins. With her, I am making jazzy sounds, so, not so CPU-Pushing things.
So, I have like 2 options:
    A - i7 Processor / 4GB Ram
    B - i5 Processor / 8GB Ram
Either, I will use them for the same purpose. But the thing is, which one would perform better for my needs?
Or the bigger question... Will there be any problem for me with Logic for the fields I use that I've stated above?
    Can It handle my needs?
    Thanks in advance!

What follows is simply a personal opinion.. and so others may disagree....
A Macbook Air, while very good for the purpose it is designed for... (A light. efficient, portable notebook type device) it is not really suitable for use with a very resource demanding application such as Logic Pro... You could use it, yes...... but depending on how complex your arrangements are... number of tracks.. type of plugins.. number of audio tracks and so on.. you would likely soon run into it's limitations...
I would suggest you put your money into a Macbook Pro via Apple's Refurb store... (Same warranty etc.. as new but usually about 20-30% cheaper).... get as fast a i7 as you can... along with 16GB of Ram....  and you should be much better off..
The following site is extremely useful at tracking down which refurb units are available in your country.....
    https://www.refurb.me/us/
Note: I haven't bought a full priced Apple product in a loog time.. having bough my last 9 Macs, iPads and other sundry things like Airport Extremes..  via the refurb store and frankly, you would never know they were refurbed... as Apple pay really good attention to detail and testing of such units before reselling them.. plus, as i said earlier.. you have the exact same warranties as new models along with whatever Applecare you may choose to buy too... For me it's a no brainer to buy refurb.. if the gear is available.

  • Can Logic Pro and Logic Express coexist on the same computer?

    Hi all,
I'm a fairly new user to logic. I started with Logic Express to test the water with it before committing to the Logic Pro. I decided I like it enough and have since purchased the Logic Pro upgrade.
My machine is a MacBook. This machine travels with me, so I am rather concerned about having to maintain a dongle when I am on the move.
Ideally, I would like to have both Logic Express and Logic Pro coexist on the same machine. That way, when I can reserve the use of Logic Pro for when I am in a stable environment but still be able to use Logic Express when moving around. Granted this would be with reduced functionality, but the peace of mind is worth that to me.
So does anyone here know if this is possible and can direct me to some instructions on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks!!
    Darth Vanva

I'd LOVE to be able to enable two simultaneous instances of Logic to accomplish what I want, but AFAIK that's an impossibility (unless a guru-whiz-type like Justin has some ideas on this...).
    OK, here's the deal...
I have 6 gigs of RAM now. While using Logic I can access up to 3G for samples. If I could somehow run another copy of Logic on the same computer (acting solely as a host for additional plugs, not for sequencing) then I'd gladly buy 2 more gigs of RAM so that the second instance of Logic could address 3G more. I'd still have 2G left for system headroom.
And there would be an additional (if not hypothetical) benefit to doing this...
Right now I can run stand-alone instruments outside of Logic (accessed via IAC) in an effort to overcome the 3G limit. But take GPO for example: I can only run 1 instance of it. And, there is no provision for saving any edits or custom made instrument sets in the stand-alone version. So not only would I be limited to 8 individual instrument slots in the lone GPO player, I wouldn't be able to save any custom programming. So much for recall... And of course, EXS is not a stand-alone plug so there's no way I could use it outside of Logic.
BUT... if I had this second instance of Logic running and treating it as a plug-in host, I'd be able to run multiple copies of plugs (just like I'm used to) and never have to deal with any stand-alone players. And of course by saving its song file I thus save all of my custom programming.
So yeah, it would be fantastic if I could run a second instance of Logic on the same computer. Theoretically.

  • Can logic pro 8 projects be read on logic express 8?

I've posted this on the logic pro forum but thought should post it here too:
So a few weeks ago I went to teach a short one day course in Logic Express 8.... except I've only used Logic Pro 8.....mmmm
Anyway, with all my projects carefully prepared (without space designers or any non- Express 8 plug-ins) I copied my workshop projects onto the students computers only to find that the .logic file was missing. Eek! The iMacs we were using had Logic express 8 (not pro) on them but for some reason the .logic file was now replaced by a folder - which we figured out was actually the opened package of the logic pro file:
The folder was always called Lgdoc containing two files: display state & document data
I've managed to replicate this behaviour on my powerbook which has not got logic 8 installed on it.
Has anyone else come across this? Has anyone opened a logic pro 8 project in Logic express 8 successfully?
Is there a way to re-pack a file whose contents are being shown?
    Thanks
    Rounik

Ok thanks, so I shouldn't have any problem I guess finish the project with logic9. Do u know by any chance if I can have both 8 and 9 running on my Mac?

  • Can logic pro 9 read logic pro X projects?

I have Logic pro X on my macbook at home, but I have to work with projects that can be also modified and edited in Logic Pro 9 (at the studios in the University), is it possible to save projects in Logic X to be compatible to Logic 9?
    Thanks for the help

    No
Logic Pro X can import and convert Logic Pro 9 projects.. but not the other way around.
You can however, export tracks from Logic Pro X, as audio 'stems' and then load those in to Logic Pro 9.

  • Can Logic Pro 9 Be re-used?

I got logic pro in sept. 2011 and I haven't really used it...Can I resell it?

If you originally purchased Logic Pro 9 from the App Store, then according to the App Store Agreement/License you can install it on any number of Computers you own (or have exclusive use of) simply by going to the App Store application, select the Purchased tab and download/install Logic Pro from there.
Note: You must sign into the App store using the original Apple ID account information that you used to purchase Logic Pro 9 in the first place... to be able to redownload Logic Pro on your new computer for free.
If you originally purchased Logic Pro as part of a physical Boxed set (Logic Studio for example ) then your license agreement allows you to install Logic on two different computers (One Desktop and One Laptop) but you may only run Logic Pro on one computer at any one time. You will also need your original Serial numbers for the original version of Logic Pro you bought plus any upgrade serial numbers (say for the Boxed upgrade set from Logic 8 to Logic 9) in order to install Logic Pro on a new computer.
Note: You will not be able to download the full version of Logic Pro 9 from the App store if you originally bought the Boxed set version.. If you try to do so you will have to pay for Logic Pro again in order to suceed. However...Once you have installed Logic Pro 9 from the DVDs you can then use the App Store/Update feature to update Logic Pro 9 to the latest version for free as normal..
