What card should my friend start with?

My friend has been an Authorized User on my Capital Ome card for a nearly 10 months with perfect payment history and a 0% UTL. But that's all the credit she has. She wants to get one credit card on her own just to build her credit profile, but she leaves for the Air Force in a couple month so she definitely doesn't need anything fancy (her words).
I suggested one with no Annual Fee (she agrees) with simple rewards. I suggested to her Chase Freedom, Discover It, or AmEx Everyday. What do you guys (and gals) think? Does she have a chance with these cards?

she leaves for the Air Force in a couple monthWhether or not they have any products of use to her right now she should join NFCU while she's eligible. As for a specific card, it will probably all depend on what she qualifies for at this point. If she can't get approved for unsecured then she may need to follow the standard suggestion of secured and/or a credit union with more lax approval criteria. ray8806 wrote:
Oops, btw, according to Credit Karma FAKO, her credit score with Equifax and Transunion is 733.Unfortunately, those VantageScores really don't mean anything unless she's applying with a creditor that uses VantageScore 3.0 for their decision. Even then, it's never just about score.

  • What tools should I get started with?

    Hi,
    I wish to get started and create a simple standalone Java program which connects to my SQL Server 2000 database. Which tools would be the easiest to start with, and can you point me to the correct forum and any tutorials which might help me out?

    So I click the UPDATE button

  • Which program(s) in 2014 should a teenager start with for their first site?

    My 14-year-old daughter wants to make her first website. She is artistic and is familar with Photoshop and makes Youtube videos using iMovie. She has a Bamboo tablet and draws including with Manga Studio.
    Should she start with something like Word Press (or....) and later learn.....
    Dreamweaver? Or Muse? Or both? or...
    I have seen one comment that Dreamweaver is for developers, and Muse for Designers. Then there are the "extras" like Edge Animate.
    Although it is all very exciting, it seems to be a bit hard judging where to start. She intuitively picked up something like iMovie and apart from a bit of Scratch, has never really done anything on coding. Like kids her age, she tends to be intuitive about picking up things like Photoshop. But she would also probably want some "cool" stuff on the website sooner than later.
    Any help much appreciated!

    3. Learn html/css (Jon and osgood) - in what way?
    HTML and css are the base code languages of the web. HTML is the structure (foundation/bones) of a page. It's a fairly simple language to learn...
    <!doctype html>
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <title>This is a page</title>
    </head>
    <body>Hi there!</body>
    </html>
    The above is  an html page, it could be on any website. The page only says "Hi there", but it's a page and it includes all the necessary pieces that browsers require to render it for the viewer in front of their computer.
    Learning how to add more information to that base skeleton is what I mean. There are tons of tutorial sites, books, you name it that go through the ins and outs of html available all over the place.
    CSS works by styling the html of a page (the bold below)...
    <!doctype html>
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <style>
    body {background-color:red; font-size:30px;}
    </style>
    <title>This is a page</title>
    </head>
    <body>Hi there!</body>
    </html>
    That particular css tells the browser to make the page's background red and the "Hi there" text 30 pixels tall. There's tons of different ways to affect every single piece of html using css. Learning how css interacts with html is a huge part of web design.
    A couple of good "basics" tutorials...

  • What's the downside of starting with Logic Express?

    I'm moving up from Garageband, and I record on a Macbook Pro with a Presonus Firepod interface.
    I'm trying to decide whether to start with Express or Logic Studio. I think that Express will suit my needs fine, but at any rate, it seems like there's no downside as Express is $199 and the upgrade to Studio is $299. So even if I start with Express and decide I need Studio, it won't cost me any more than the full version of Studio anyway ($499).
    Does anyone have an opinion?

    Honestly, I think your original question answers itself. You are right on target in your thoughts. You can buy LE8 now and, if you decide to upgrade later, you can upgrade for a price that wouldn't cost you more than the original purchase of Logic Studio. I just purchased the upgrade from LE7, and the reason why I used LE instead of Logic Pro is that I refuse to use software with dongles. By adding external plugins and instruments, I was able to do pretty much what a Logic Pro user could do in my position (the extra features such as HDM support were unnecessary to me). Now, though, with what Logic Studio offers, I decided that $300 was a pretty sweet upgrade. Still, I could do a lot with LE7. LE 8, of course, is much, much better.
    So, jump in to Logic Express 8 and see if it does what you want. One things for sure, though, and that is LE8 is a serious DAW out of the box for an incredible price.

  • Where can I purchase an upgraded GPU for my PM G5? What card should I get?

    I don't know much about Macs but I need to purchase an upgraded video card for somebody in our graphic design department.
    Can I purchase an upgraded video card directly through Apple or is there another preferred vendor somebody here can recommend?
    I read that the ATI 4870 is likely the best video card available for the Mac at this point in time, can somebody confirm this or tell me what else I should opt for?
    Thanks in advance!
    P.S. I don't see anywhere on the Apple website where I can actually purchase a GPU...can somebody please provide a link?

    Hello again, The hatter.
    Although OP does specifically mention ATI 4870, and although Apple sells ATI 4870, it seems to me that the Apple 4870 product page
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A
    does NOT assure OP of compatibility with his Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 (Original) from August 2006.
      http://support.apple.com/kb/SP30
    I am not knowledgeable in these specifics. Perhaps you know the answer to these questions.
    (1) Can the ATI 4870 work with OP's August 2006 QuadCore MacPro, or does he need some different upgrade-video card?
    (2) Should OP be looking for a ATI Radeon X1900 XT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (or equivalents) rather than ATI 4870 to upgrade his August 2006 QuadCore MacPro's video card?

  • What hazards should I watch for with X.3.9?

    Just got my powerbook back with a new hard disk. Apple returned it with X.3.9 pre-installed. I'm hesitant to leave it with x.3.9. Before definitely deciding to zero-format and start over with X.3.8 I was thinking about test driving X.3.9 for a few days.
    What X.3.9 specific bugs/problems should I look for?
    They also updated my
    iTunes to 6.0.2
    Quicktime to 7.0.4
    Safari to 1.3.2 (and keyboard shortcuts already seem to be broken)
    Mail to 1.3.11
    I know there were reports that made me decide to stick at X.3.8 but Google search and a search of this forum don't jog my memory as to why. I'm not planning to update to Tiger.

    Kappy, I know one must consider the universe of potential complainaints and not just who does the complaining. Nonetheless, I've always been one to let others work out the bugs. If I have no reason to update I sit tight. I discovered like 3 or 4 years after OS 9 was released that Apple was finally saying it was compatible with 604e chips (originally they said it wasn't). OS 8.6 worked well so I still use it in my PM7300.
    Also, when I walked in the door of the Apple store yesterday the tech I know was shocked another disk failed. I mistyped when I wrote it's the 3rd disk in the powerbook, I meant to say it was the 3rd one that failed in the powerbook. I'm now on disk 4 since last May when the original one failed. That's why Apple rushed the repair for me. I know these hard disk issues are bizzare.
    In contrast, my PowerMac's original disk lasted 6.5 years.
    I'm fanatical about maintenance. That's why I lost no data with this disk failure (or when my PM7300's died). The last OS X update horror story I personally experienced was when Software Updater installed old security patches over the X.3.8 combo; Apple Care confirmed that the installed patches shouldn't have been recommended by Software Updater. I did a clean (i.e. zero format install of the X.3.8 combo and ilife updates) and the OS was solid. It would still be in use if certain OEM drives weren't... less than reliable?
    Before that I was one of those people who's modem was toasted by X.3.4-X.3.6. Before that I had a powerbook that always tested fine for hardware and couldn't go 5 mins without crashing. One of the hard disks that died in my current powerbook lasted less than 24 hours. It upped and died when I zero formatted it. "Stressing it" with the erasure saved me the tons of trouble of restoring my data before it would have died anyway.
    Personally, I think you are over-reacting
    Once bit twice shy. Ever since the Apple Genius suggested it, I find doing the zero erase makes it far easier to determine a problem is hardware related and not just an OS gone bad.
    I would give what you have a chance before you remove it.
    I am trying out the X.3.9 that's installed. I might even keep itunes 6 if I go back to X.3.8: I've been using itunes 4.7. Safari OTOH is really annoying with it's broken/"improved" shortcuts. I'm just trying to get a handle on what sort of problems to be on the look for.
    I appreciate your insights on how it's working for you. Tiger's out of my budget so I'll be sticking with Panther.

  • WHAT CARD SHOULD I GIVE A SHOT NEXT?

    hello guys still very new and in rebuilding my credit and i have made some decent progress over the past 6 months....i've managed to remove all but two of my past baddies, they are a pain but still trying i currently have two cards one cap1 platinum secured and one credit one,...they are only a couple months old but there reporting gave me a decent bump...scores are still pretty low....i am still looking for another card to apply for,both ck and cs both recommend cap1 qs1 and discover it...not sure which would be my best shot or is there another option... current scores are eq 538 tu 509 ex  531.....any advice would be great...i currently have about 8 inq per ca if that matters, thanks guys!!

    My scores are in the mid 550s/560s.  I applied for the Discover Student Chrome last month (my scores were about 15 points higher - took a hit with inq and new accts).  I was declined but they offered me their secured card, which I snatched up.  I really love their cash back program and got the double cash back for the year. I also wanted to be "in" with them.  I have heard a lot of success stories of their card graduating at a year as well.  That was important to me.  I had my Cap One secured card and a Platinum which I just PCd to a Quicksilver last month.  I had the secured card for over 3 years.  Some have had Cap One give them unsecured CLI on it, but I never did.  I knew it wouldn't graduate so I finaly closed it two days ago.  Yesterday I checked the Cap One prequal site and it did not give me anything.  CK said my chances were poor.  I have received a handful of cards in the last month and I really wanted all inquiries and cards to age together so I cold app'd for the Quicksilver One and was approved. I definitely agree that you should check their pre-qual site.  If nothing comes up, you could wait until you have had the secured card for 6 months.  That will improve your chances of getting approved for an unsecured card with them. Good luck!!

  • What I should get to start developing j2me

    Hello. I was wondering if somebody could tell me what they think is the best software development environment for j2me on a mac with osx 10.4? I'm looking for free software so whatever that entails. I will also be testing my midlets across a wide variety of phone manufacturers.

    I suggest you install Apache Tomcat server for your JSPs and servlets. Then, put your database configuration information in the appropriate tomcat *.xml file. Read up on JDBC to determine how to communicate with your database.
    I suggest your first project be MVC design as follows:
    presentation layer: JSP/JSTL. They display data from request scope, and submit user input back to the controller servlet. They dont contain business or database logic.
    control layer: A single servlet that takes in all submits from JSP pages, calls business logic (passing user data to it as necessary). Puts data retrieved from business logic in request scope. Dispatches to the appropriate JSP page. Does not contain/generate presentation logic, business logic, or database logic.
    business layer: Java objects that take in request from the control layer, calls database layer for database data, does any additional processing of the data (if any), passes it to the control layer. Does not contain logic from other layers.
    database layer: takes requests from business layer, gets data from database via sql. Does not contain logic from other layers. Only layer that deals with sql.
    After you know the above very well, you can look into frameworks such as Spring.

  • Can I use one purchase of Acrobat on more than one computer? I work on a desk top, lap top, and netbook.  Do I have to purchase multiple copies or what?  (PS -- If I start with a free trial download, how long can it be used for?)

    How many times can I use Acrobat Pro on my three compters -- the desk top, lap top, the net book.  Do I have to make multiple purchases?

    Hi markala,
    As per the End User License Agreement a single purchase of retail license for Acrobat is good for 2 computers.
    If you want to install it on 3 machines you need to procure a volume license.

  • What Credit Cards Should I Apply For?

    Hi there, My Ch7 was discharged 4/15/15. I have applied for a First Premier Card (approved at $700) & Target (declined) and that is it. What cards should I apply for? Trying to rebuild and not sure how to go about it. Any advice is very much appreciated. All accounts are showing as closed on credit reports except for student loans.  Transunion is 558/ Equifax is 575

    Hello, My BK7 was discharged in late March. I just applied for Express and New York & Co store cards using this link http://www.doctorofcredit.com/shopping-cart-trick-get-credit-cards-without-the-hard-pull/ This link contains a list of retail cards you can get with a SOFT PULL!! Just go to the retail site, put items in your cart, go to checkout.  If a card invitation pops up, click on it and be sure to use the same address that's on your credit report. The application only asks for the last 4 of your SS.  Since I recently moved, I entered my old address and immediately after approval called customer service to update my address and find out the credit limit.  Each account has a $250 limit. I think this  is a good way to avoid secured cards or worse yet, cards like 1st Premier and Credit One with outrageous rates.  My cards will arrive any day now! With proper usage of these accounts and my student loans reporting good payment history, I expect to receive unsecured offers in a few months.

  • How to start with JMS?

    Hi All
    I am new to JMS, i know about java basic stuff....
    what do i need to start with JMS? i mean.. what software/applications/servers?
    I have J2SDK 1.4.2_03,
    what concepts should i know as pre-requisites... ?
    Thanx..

    I was in your situation a few months ago and chose OpenJMS
    http://openjms.sourceforge.net
    Dead easy to get up and running. If you want to use it with Tomcat, make sure that neither openjms or tomcat are installed beneath a subdirectory with spaces. (This causes problems with RMI).
    In order to test your JMS installation you'll need a tool like Hermes for browsing queues. This was a bit more difficult to get running but the help docs were excellent.

  • What book should I read to learn J2ee!!

    i find that j2ee turorial is a hell of mess!!there's not enough real sample code out there,definition is vague,is there any one who can tell me which book should i turn to or in what way should i familiarize myself with J2ee
    thanks!

    thanks,english is my second language,my native is
    chinese,so there may be errors!!No errors really. It's a little irritating to the eyes when there are no spaces after the comma or full stop. It's almost similar to writingasentencewithoutspacesinitthatmaynotbeintendedtoirritatesomeonebutitdoeseventually.
    is there any book which concentrate on real project?It depends on what your real project is going to use. You can start by looking at the introductory J2EE text and decide which part of J2EE you want to start with. Servlets and JSP are usually the easiest to start with.
