What causes internal hard drive to lock?
I had a coworker with a problem over the weekend. He has a 2.2 GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro from around 2011, running OS X 10.10.0. He had an issue where his Finder was not responding. He force-quite the Finder and was unable to get it to relaunch, so he restarted his computer. Upon doing so a series of dialog boxes appeared, requesting that he reset his password but not actually allowing him to do so. That's when he brought it to me. I was able to create a bootable Yosemite installer on a thumb drive and boot the computer, and tried using Disk Utility to unlock the drive. Disk Utility reported 18.9 MB free space remaining on his 750 GB hard drive. I ran Repair Permissions twice and that seemed to report no problems after the second time. Attempted to restart and no change, still asking to reset password. I could not seem to get the computer to boot up in Target Disk mode, unless it no longer displays any visual indication on the screen that this is working. (I was not going to drop $30 on a Thunderbolt cable unless I was sure I would be able to do something with it!) I next installed the OS on another thumb drive and used that to boot his machine. Entering his admin password allowed me to unlock his hard drive. When I did Get Info on the drive, the system reported 599 GB free. I restarted his computer using his internal HD as the startup dick and everything was fine. I'm mystified as to what actually went wrong here. Seems like a virtual-memory problem gone horribly awry. Is this a case of just shutting down at the wrong time? Could this have somehow been prevented?

Installation appeared to go well and I ran an extended hardware test with no issues found. However, the drive is listed at 5.46 TB (would be nice) and I get an input/output error when attempting to partition. I can initiate an erase, but after the time I would suspect it would take to erase the drive, I get an input/output error - it seems to appear after the first 750 GB of the '5.5 TB' was erased. At all times, the drive is not recognized when I attempt to install OS X from original discs.
I suspect the 6.0 GB/s transfer capacity of the hard drive is not compatible with the MacBook Pro. The drive came with 4 jumper pins but no jumper and no label diagram to set a slower transfer rate. I called Seagate, Newegg, OWC, and Apple, but no one has compatibility info for my MacBook Pro. To them, it appears I am running the first tests of this new technology with an 'older' MacBook Pro.
My MBP has had no issues - I'd like to keep her going with the optimum internal hard drive capacity, but don't necessarily want to set up a test bench in my house (though my kids would enjoy destroying it) and pay several shipping and restocking fees to test new hard drives.
The original drive had a 1.5 GB/s transfer rate. Does anyone know the maximum transfer rate compatible with a 2007 MacBook Pro? 3.0 GB/s? 1.5 GB/s? Thank you.No spinning hard drive will transfer data faster then 60-80MB a second. The XT models have a flash storage area that is used when reading and writing data that can make it Appear faster in some situations. That flash memory if only 8 or 16GBs in side, I forget which one.
The drie is rated to work on 6GB SATA bus but it certainly can not transfer data that fast. It should be backword compatible to work on slower buses.
Your drive is 750GBs in size. Not wure where you are getting this 5.5TB (that is 5.5 Tera Bytes which is 5500 Giga Bytes. Your drive is under 1TB)
What are you using to partition the drive? Disk Utilities from the original install DVD?
You need to install on your old drive, Update it from the Apple Website then clone it to the new drive. The version of OSX you are using may not function correctly with that large of a drive. Or get yourself a copy of Snow Leopard, retail disk for $29 from Apple, and do all the partitioning and installing with that version od OSX. -
I move folders from my internal hard drive twice to an external hard drive. Now I believe Lr does not know how to find my photos. What can I do to get this cleared up.
Jim has a very good suggestion. There are many factors at work here:
1) How are you connecting the external drive to the computer?
2) How big are files (329 x 1MB is not the same as 329 x 25MB)?
3) What is your computer specification?
4) Do you have any power saving settings on (in particular something that would send the computer/hard drives to sleep)? -

What option has the faster GB/s?Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

What internal hard drive can I get with 2007 Mac Pro?

I own a Mac Pro that I purchased sometime Early 2007 and I want to add an additional internal hard drive. I am a little confused as to what my options are after visiting the Apple online store. It seems they do not have a choice for 1 TB drives for my machine. I do know that my current drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s (SATA II) 500-GB (16 MB cache buffer) Hard Drive.
I was wondering if I could add a 1 TB drive or do I need to stay with 500 GB size drive? Also, do I need to stick with 16 MB cache buffer or could I go with the 32 MB cache buffer size? If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. Normally, I would just think I could get any drive that uses a SATA II standard.

is it too hot?If you are replacing the drive because the existing one is faulty, that's one thing. If you just want more space, you should take advantage of having a decently fast and relatively small capacity drive in there now (instead of a huge drive). Get an external FireWire drive and off-load most of your user data there. Make your internal drive dedicated to mostly your OS and app files, with plenty of free space. That setup will make your iMac run more efficiently. I won't go into more detail, because I'm not answered your specific question... You can post back with any questions, if interested...
To answer your questions...
You should be able to use any SATA 3.5-inch drive internally, but you should probably keep it at or under 1TB. The main concerns are power usage and heat dissipation. A drive like the WD Caviar Green would be ideal in terms of power and heat, but they do have slower (or variable) spin rate. I have one as an external drive (750GB) and it is amazingly quiet and cool. If I had to replace the internal drive because the current drive failed, I'd put it inside. I'll trade a bit of pure performance for the efficiency (including low noise), and these drives are more advanced with higher data density and larger cache, so the trade-off from slower spin rate may not be so bad.
You can check your current drive's model number (which is shown in System Profiler) to get the specs online. The stock drive in my old +Late 2006+ iMac is a 7200 RPM drive. The Caviar Black is a 7200 RPM drive, with a newer design. So if you want to use a Caviar Black in there, I think it would be OK. -

My ITunes Library is on an external hard drive, however, the internal hard drive on my laptop crashed, requireing a complete re-format and re-installation of Windows XP--When I re-install Itunes, what do I need to do to make sure I do not lose all of the content on the two iphones I have, and to re-associate the library with Itunes ( i know how to change the path) but I am fearful that somehow the library link will be broken since the old Itunes installation is gone, and who knows what else might go awry.

I live in India. I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012). My Macbook crashed 3 days ago. Apple said the internal hard disk needed replacement. They gave me two options.

I have decided to go with option 2, because option 1. is not feasible for me!

How do i find out what is backed up to my internal hard drive
i backed up all my movies to an external hard drive to save space on my macbook air but when looking at the storeage space i see that there is still alot of space taken up from backups. I have time machine set up so my macbook backups to my external hard drive, i need to see what all is backed up on my internal hard drive so i can edit what is important and what isnt. So how do i find out what is backed up on my internal hard drive.

There are way too many photos on my internal hard drive. I have older libraries, and newer libraires in iPhoto and Aperture 2. What is the best way to find and reduce the number of duplicate photos/libraries before upgrading to Aperture 3?

I would probably wait for the merge function of the latest version before merging. Be sure to verify every merge.
Merge Libraries, then from within Aperture move images to referenced on external hard drives.

I have 21,000 photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive. What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager -
Why won't my Intel iMac boot up, either from the internal hard drive or the DVD drive? It just displays a light grey screen, without any other icons, etc. The fact that it won't boot from the original system DVD is what baffles me the most. Any ideas? If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.

If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.
