What causes ipod classic to freeze?

Hi,
We recently bought my Dad a new ipod classic. I got itunes set up on my Dad's windows laptop, imported some music (only about 40--50 tracks to start with) then synced to the new ipod. Synced quickly, then played back pefectly for about 10 minutes before freezing.
We couldn't access the internet at that exact moment, so we just thought it was a dud as it remained in the same frozen state for about 2 days, so my Dad sent it back and got a replacement.
So, 2nd ipod gets synced, plays back then freezes too. By this time my Dad is ready to smash it up, but we had the internet again so we found out about the reset procedure involving the Menu and Select buttons and this worked fine. However, it still happens pretty regularly on a nearly new ipod with only a small number of mp3s, so what could be causing it?
A lot of the mp3s he has are quite old and from different places, so my gut is that there are some corrupt files (an indication was that the track info was all over the place) causing it to freeze, but I don't really know what I'm talking about so this is a wild guess. If this is a likely cause, how can you find corrupt mp3s in order to fix/remove them?
Thanks in advance, wise people.

Try running these MP3 tracks though the MP3 Vaildator program that can be downloaded from the link below.

  • IPod Classic keeps freezing...what do I do?

My iPod Classic keeps freezing. It still plays music, but then the screen freezes and won't let me command the device until the backlight switches off. I noticed it's got a bit worse since I bought 'Bush' iPod speakers to play my music out loud through my iPod. What do I do? It's getting annoying.

    Hi Candyfornia,
I think you must restore your iPod (with iTunes) to solve your problem...

  • IPod classic 160GB freezing when plugged in

    Hi,
My new iPod classic started freezing when plugge in after the night, for example - it needs a restore, then works fine. Any ideas?
    Thank you for your help

Yikes!, it may means it is the iPod Classic firmware 2.0.4, that is hanging up the USB Host controller, which freezes your whole Computer.
Could be a partially updated firmware 2.0.4, (so kind of corrupted)
    Can you
    1. Open in finder <yourname>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/
    2. Remove the .ipsw and .ipsw.signature for the version you are wanting to drop, in this case, 2.0.4
    3. Open iTunes and in Preferences uncheck automatic check for updates.
    4. Connect iPod and select restore. It will ask you if you want to check for newer update. Select Yes. All files will be removed and it will have to resync the entire library but it worked.
PS: try and do this in Diskmode.

  • My iPod classic is freezing iTunes

    Hi,
My 160GB iPod Classic causes iTunes to freeze when I plug it in. I also cannot safely eject the iPod. Also, for some reason a lot of the iPod's memory is being taken up by something under the category of 'other'.
Here is some information from diagnostics mode:
    Retracts 0
    Reallocs 8
    Pending sectors 56
    Power on hours 18
    Start/Stops 1769
    Temp: current 33c
    Temp: min 12c
    Temp: max 54c
I got this ipod December last year, so it isn't that old. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?
    Thank you

See Corrupt iPod classic. for some general ideas. The "other" is likely to be the lost remnants of previous attempts to sync the device. The pendings are areas of the disc that won't read reliably. If they contain part of a song the iPod will skip to the next track once it cannot read the data, but if they contain part of a directory or the device's database then the iPod is likely to crash and iTunes will freeze when it tries to read data from it. A format or DFU restore may release all of the pending sectors and allow normal operation. given that the device is less than a year old you may want to check your warranty options while you still can.

  • My iPod classic will freeze during sync.

I have an 80gb ipod classic. Im using itunes on my imac and when i got to sync the ipod it starts then it freezes.  takes forever to load songs.. Mind you i have over 4,000 songs im trying to download... I still think it should sync a little faster. Anyone know what the issue is?

The sync cable must be connected to a USB port at the back of the iMac screen and not to those USB ports on the keyboard or USB portr hubs.
You iPod hardisk maybe having problem, do a Diskutility firstaid repair and run the Ipod disk diagnostic to check if the Realloc and Pending sectors numbers are not high.
    Good luck!

  • Why does my ipod classic keep freezing my itunes account

so i have had my ipod classic for a few years not and i love it. but lately i cannot plug it into itunes without it freezing my itunes all up. i have tried resetting it, ive re downloaded itunes and everything i try doesnt work. i dont know what to do. i really dont want to have to go buy a new one.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • My new ipod classic keeps freezing

I got it for christmas and have been looking after it. The screen and buttons consistantly freezes at least once a week. I don't know what triggers it besides that it only happens when I'm doing something with it. So it dosn't happen when it's in my pocket. The screen dosn't shut off or dim. When I plug it into itunes my computer registers that a usb device was plugged in with a sound effect but itunes dosn't communicate with it. The only way I found to fix it is to wait until the battery drains and then charge it again. It's a classic 160 gig. I don't know why it would be broken because I've never dropped it or bumped it and because it's only a month old it's very dissapointing.

    Hey jirioxy,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing multiple issues with your iPod classic. To troubleshoot, it may be helpful to run through the following assistant:

  • My ipod classic keeps freezing when I plug it in, why?

I have an ipod classic that I bought off of Amazon about month ago. When I first plugged it into my computer to put songs on it, it worked fine, but now whenever I plug it into my laptop it freezes. I have to let it die everytime and this is becoming ridiculous. I even tried closing out all other open windows on my computer so that iTunes is the only thing that's open and it still freezes. I am severely ****** off and I feel like I've wasted $250 dollars. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

    Hello Briannat1995,
It sounds like your iTunes application is becoming unresponsive when you plug your iPod Classic into your computer. I recommend trying the troubleshooting steps from the article named:
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • What causes ipod to go into disk mode

I have an older ipod nano and out of the blue for no reason the other day when i picked it up it said something about how i needed to use itunes to restore. When i plug the ipod into itunes in says something about corrupted files and the ipod needs to be restored to factory settings. Now, i have read a lot about ways to try to salvage this but resetting etc. and when i do this i get a check mark that says "okay to disconnect" and above it it says "disk mode" But what causes this in the first place? I never plugged it into a computer and ejected it improperly. One day it works fine and the next it doesnt and im going to have to lose all my music because of it! So again, what exactly causes this to happen? Is it something i may have done or just a flaw in the device?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

Yeah, I've had this happen to me too. Unfortuantely its just one f the many joys of owning an ipod/apple product. I'm not exatcly sure WHAT causes this to happen, but if you hold down the center and menu button down at the same time, the disk mode screen should turn off; and, depending if your ipod is charge or not, pressing the play/pause button should turn on your ipod on normaly.                  Hope this helped for being so late.

  • IPod Classic 120Gb freezes when connecting

I have a new iPod Classic 120 GB and about every other time when I connect to my PC to sync the iPod freezes. I have to reset the iPod in order to get it to work again. Is there a fix for this?

I have this same issue, it seemed to start with the last firmware upgrade. My 160 Classic is several months old. I sync at least once a day, usually at night. I listen to it in the car to and from work, listen to it all day at work, never any problems. I come home, plug it into my iMac and the iPod freezes. I reset it, it syncs just fine. Lather, rinse, repeat the following day. Maybe one day out of ten it will work, but almost always I have to reset it in order to sync. I've tried connecting the cable directly to the mac, to a hub, with and without the dock. Same story. I am at a loss.
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Ipod Classic 80gb Freezes on Apple Logo

I have an Ipod classic 80gb. When I plug my Ipod into my computer the Ipod freezes on the Apple logo on screen. The only way to get it back is to go into disk mode and then restore the ipod on itunes but it doesn't fix it permanently. As soon as I plug it back in or it resets it does the same thing. If i leave it unplugged for a while then it will come back on like a reset ipod asking to select language and it is then a factory reset ipod with nothing on it. When I plug it back in so i can upload songs it does the same thing again. Please help

The clicking sound is your iPod Hardisk, trying to retract and find the boot sector unsuccesfully.
Hopefully, you can do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as in this great post by tt2., it wont fix your problem, but let you know, how dire is your Hardisk health.
So only as a last resort, one way, to get the stuck Hardisk head free, is to bang the iPod on a rubber mouse pad, when you reset it, but do it at your own risk, some very lucky guys got it working again for the next 14 months, like myself.

  • Ipod classic 80G freezing on "big sync" after restoring

I recently restored my ipod due to issues and upon the big re-sync that happens the ipod freezes and sticks on one song. I try to stop the sync and ejecting and neither work it just causes my computer to freeze. Anyone have a solution or suggestion, I don't want to have to buy a new ipod because of this.

    Hi Borzon,
Take a look at these threads: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2388350&start=0&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2705627&tstart=30
I've been having the same problem too. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Apple Support, brought the iPod into the store, and even sent it to get repaired. The repair service said the problems could not be replicated, so I'm back at square one again. Hopefully we'll be able to figure this out!
