Hi!
You can see what is using your Macbook CPU power in "Activity monitor" app. Frequently CPU usage depends on your installed applications.

  • What causes ad-hoc to run with bad plan and its resolution

One of our Company Application funcnalities uses the ad-hoc query that returns top first row from the result sets .There has been several times since this ad-hoc query ran with a bad
execution in last 8 months .There is no specifice time and date or day when this query run with bad execution plan ,however whenever this query ran with a bad execution plan on SQL ,that happed always early in the morning , before 6am .The setting of database
parameterization is set to forced .There is SQL maintenance reindexing job that runs each night at 2am that changes the recovedry model of our production database from Full to simple and changing back from simple to full after the reindexing operation .That
causes the SQL plans to flush each night .The next day morning , when the application ad-hoc query runs on SQL first time , SQL generates a new plan for that query . Some strange reason , SQL genarates a good plan for that ad-hoc query most of the times ,but
sometime this query picks up a bad plan .Whenever it happen, the application function becomes exetremly slow and it seems that the rest of the fuctionalities work fine meantime .
Our application vender is aware of this issue and this issue will be fixed in the application next release .Developer is converting the ad-hoc query into stored procedure to fix this
issue .Application new relase will not available for next 2-3 months ,meantime we still have to deal with the ad-hoc query bad execution plan issue . Usually ,when the ad-hoc query run with the bad execution plan , I retrieve the query bad plan and just remove
the plan for that particular query from cache .Once the bad plan is removed from cache , the perfomance gets back to normal .
As my understanding, this issue is related to parameter sniffing .but anyone thinks there are other factors responsible for this issue such as the network problem , the resource intensive
report ran or something else .
Has anyone have step by step troubleshooting steps that could help me with my investigation and what areas
do I need to look into in order to investigate what could caused the ad-hoc query to pick up bad plan ?
Any help will be apprecited .
    Daizy

When we upgraded our Production Database to SQL server 2008R2 enterprise Edition. We ran into the transaction log file to grow too large during the reindexing job activities at night .To prevent the transaction log file to grow big , we had decided to change
the recovery model of database from FULL to Simple before the reindexing job starts and the recovery model of Database is changed from Simple to Full after the reindexing job finishes . We also have the differential backup job setup right after the recovery
model change back to full so the transaction log backup chain does not break.
The transaction log chain breaks when you set the recovery to simple.
Yes, if you take a diff backup, you can apply transaction logs from that point
if the diff backup is good. If the diff backup is bad, you will lose all updates after you set recovery to simple. And, yes, when you hardware starts to deteoriate, you should not be surprise that the last backup is not good.
Again, please stop setting recovery to simple, unless you have a very relaxed RPO in your SLA. Use bulk-logged recovery instead.
By the way, you do take a t-log backup before you change the recovery mode, don't you?
Changing the database recovery model does flush the SQL plans for specific Database. Please review this linkhttp://sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/steveh/archive/2010/09/02/changing-recovery-model-removes-plans-from-procedure-cache-for-a-database.aspx
Hmmm. I don't have the time to verify this right now. Anyway, reindexing is good enough to flush the cache of most plans.
I have pretty much all required info regarding this query , but what other areas or investigation do I need to do for the query parameter sniffing issue ?
Have you researched what values the initial plan is sniffed for?
As Erland said  adding space in query ,I don?t know adding space means just add additional space in the query so it hashes a different values .Please advice .
Obviously, you need access to the application code. The other alternative is to set up an early morning job that runs after this first execution and which forces a recompilation; either by evicting this specific plan or more brutally runs sp_recompile on
one of the tables in the query.

  • What to do if computer runs slowly

My iMac is about 3 years old. I am running OS x 10.6.8.  I have a ADSL 2+ internet connection and use an airport extreme as I also have a MacBook pro. My computer is slow. I've been told to use disk utility to repair disk permission once a onth. Anything else I should do?

    Hi allan,
Sorry for the delay - have been away. My MacBook Pro is only 6 months old and I mainly use that for surfing the web, Facebook etc so I must admit I don't put it under the pressure I expect of my iMac. I do all my photo and video editing on the iMac.
With the iMac, I make a point of not having too many applications open at any one time - iCal is always running, Mail and usually Safari.
I guess if I really think about it, most of my angst comes when I am using Word for Mac and Excel - I get the little coloured wheel while it thinks about it a lot and sometimes I have to force quit Word. I have to fess up here - the edition I am using is the very first one for OS X - just looking at the About Word info now (Yup, Word X for Mac Release 1  - 1993). You'll probably advise me to spend a few bucks and get the latest version!!!!   Grateful for your thought.s

  • What to do when Firefox runs slowly and hangups. Running on two PCs -- Windows XP & Windows 8.

Firefox has been working great on both PCs until the last week or so. If it was just running poorly on the PC with Windows XP, I wouldn't be so concerned. But it's running just as poorly on a new laptop with Windows 8. It seems to hang up if I have more than 3 tabs open at once or if I click a link within a site, the new tab opening hangs up. Frustrating! Can anyone offer some advice?

Please see help article [[Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix]]

Chrome and IE9 start up instantly. This is a 64 bit windows 7 pro Dell

After further testing I am convinced that it is the flash plugin that is causing the issue. I should have known. But why? How on earth can flash have anything to do with USB?

  • Script running slowly...

    Hi there!
The alert message "A script in this movie is causing Flash
Player to run slowly. If it continues to play your computer may
become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?" is really
    driving me mad.
    Everything was going well.
It happened suddenly when I published my movie for about the
hundreth time just after adding a script.
I tried to re-publish with the new script removed and I still
    got the same message!
I verified all the scripts my movie contains and there's no
    error in the scripting
(at least as Check syntax tells me...)
In the publishing window, I can see the whole movie playing
very quickly without a stop even if each concerned keyframe has a
    stop(); in it.
If I abort the script, the movie continues to run and at the
end of the graphical display of the frames, I can see a lot of
"ghost" frames (about twenty) and the panel indicates a preload of
    about 3 000 000 frames !!!!!
If I don't abort the script, the graphical display and the
Preload quantity is normal (about 270 frames).
Does anybody has an idea of what is happening?
    Many thanks for your help.

    Thanks for replying!
    Sorry for the delay...
I'm an old man and I was sick these days...
The script I added is very simple and clean: it loads arrays
to populate a new ComboBox and a Listener to drive this ComboBox.
    Nothing very special here.
The Movie contains 23 ComboBoxes with similar scripts.
All of the ComboBoxes are set invisible by default and some
of them are called on demand depending the Frame in which we work.
    Very simple... indeed!
Remark: despite the warning, if I DON'T abort the script
everything is working fine and operations are flashy. The Movie
becomes erratic if I abort the script and then nothing is working
Problem is the warning doesn't indicate WHICH script is
    involved and it is annoying.
Using the Debugger is very complex for me and doesn't do an

  • CFFORM script running slowly

I've been working on an extranet app that would allow a
vendor to update multiple purchase order records in a single screen
without having to click to open each record and save individually.
I show a whole list of POs with 4 fields per PO, and then lines for
each item on the PO with 3 fields per line. The user updates any or
all fields and then clicks Save, and I process the whole form. This
is being done in CF8 using an HTML CFFORM.
The problem I'm having seems to be when I pass a certain
number of records on the page--I get one of those "a script is
causing your page to run slowly" messages, in both IE and Firefox.
I eliminated my own Javascripts as a possible cause, leaving the
Javascripts generated by the CFFORM. Sure enough, I changed the
form to a regular HTML form and the script error went away. But
that means I will have to go back and code my own validation
    routines and calendar controls.
Is there a known limit to how many CFINPUT elements can
efficiently run on a page? Any workarounds for a CFFORM with
hundreds of elements? I realize there are other ways to accomplish
this, but I'd like to know for this one in particular if it simply
    can't be done.

    Thanks for replying!

  • Is xml causing the site to load slowly?

    Hi there,
Basically I have been struggling with my 1st flash webiste, just about bodged it together, but it is loading terribly slowly.
    http://www.siobhannolan.co.uk/tester/
Having consulted someone on this site, I reduced the xml loading and optimised all the jpegs, which made a lil difference, but its still horribly slow.
I've had a bit of trouble with the dynamic buttons too, when I added a second line of text they would overlap the btn below, to counter this I added blank xml nodes between the problem buttons, which sort of sorted the issue (although when you click on one of these a second time they load the wrong page), I read somewhere that unnessasary xml code can slow down a webite, plus my freind whos site it is keeps getting the old "some code in the site is causing your computer to run slowly" msg (her internets slower than mine.
I'm also wondering if the amount of images in the swfs is slowing it down (some of the swfs are coming in at more than 4mb) - was I wrong to ditch the dynamic loading? or is there another way to compress the swfs?
Any help will as ever be graciously recieved, kind regards and fingers crossed D.

Are you facing this issue on both wired and wireless computer ?
Try to change different wireless channels and then check.

    Hi,
Some "movies' are actually Flash files.
This means the Flash App will play them (possibly in a browser in some cases).
Depending where this item is and how it is playing it may be effected by other things
A web page can include javascript.
Apple uses javascript here to help with creating the posting box, the Edit options, Adding pics/smilies and the like.
Sometimes the javascript can be what is called a runaway process and gets sort of stuck in an endless loop.
If it is a free standing item then it might be triggered by AppleScript on the Mac. (or be modified in some way)
Again if the Script (normally written with a upper case S) is not perfect it can cause problems.
