What causes periodic slowing down ?- (cured with reboot)

Hello, all! I'm loving my older Mac mini, but noticed a strange phenomenon - it sometimes gets really slow, cured by rebooting. I used the Activity monitor, and when it is slow, 90% of the CPU power is used by "system" I noticed an application named Twainbridge was using a lot of power, quit that, and that sped things up a lot, but it still progresses to extremely slow. Any thoughts? I have removed some programs. Checking permissions and disk space is OK (24gig free) When it runs great, it's fast and wonderful, and when it's slow, restarting cures it. Any utilities/fixes? Thanks

It depends on the scanner and the software, but generally twainbridge only runs when it is called by the host software or connected hardware. A bit of trial and error might be in order in terms of simply leaving the scanner disconnected and checking to see if you suffer the performance issues. If not, then that should work just fine as a solution, though it suggests the software may not be entirely compatible with the version of MacOS.
It's also possible that the hardware or software vendors have newer drivers and/or software available which may behave a little better.
Also a possibility which has worked for some users with less than ideally compatible devices and software is to set up a separate account on the system to log in to and use just for those specific things, allowing the main account to remain unblemished by performance hits and potential stability issues.

Are the lines like psychedelic herringbone?  If yes, I had that happen once, it was something serious, like the
Logic board. The good news is that it was fixed without any loss of data on the hard drive. Take it in to have Apple look at it ASAP.  I took it to TekServe at the time, they are very nice about preserving your data and user library when possible.

  • Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
    OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
    6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files.  The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen.  The system has slowed down to almost a standstill.  Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze.  I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times.   The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running.  When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete.  The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge.  It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed.  Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
    Good luck,

  • Help! Flashvars causing browser slow down

    Hi All,
I have a very simple .swf file that is causing some kind of
slow down or memory leak. It is effecting the browser its self as
moving the mouse cursor around or selecting text becomes sluggish.
Within the .swf, the stage is only 1px by 1px. It is meant to
fit the size of the html element its embedded in. Once the .swf
loads it adjusts its stage to the new dimensions. It then draws a
rectangle movie clip to fit the new size.
Once the rectangle is drawn the .swf then draws 50 circles of
varying size to animate as a snow effect. I wasn't having any slow
down until I added this snow effect in. However let me explain in
the next paragraph that the snow is not the real culprit.
The rectangles fill, stroke, and corner radius. Can all be
set by variables sent to the swf. by the Flashvars attribute of
object, and embed. Once they are retrieved by the .swf they are
processed by a conditional statement I wrote. If one of the
attributes isn't set they are set to a default. The code is
    attached below.
Heres how I know the snow effect isn't the culprit. If I
don't pass the .swf any Flashvars attribute and just let it use the
defaults for styleObj in the .swf. The effect runs fine. If I do
try to pass it Flashvars the slow down occurs. Is there an issue
    with my conditional statements?
I have tried embedding using the SwfObject.js Class and using
standard HTML tags. Both display the same issue if Flashvars are
passed there's a slowdown if not its fine.
If anyone could help with this, or shoot me some links with
info I would be eternally grateful. I can also provide the source
files if you want to take a look at it.
I have uploaded a test page so you can see the problem in
    http://www.callmekev.com/client/test/

    Hey kglad,
Thanks for all your help. I had the issue posted on 2 other
forums and you are the only response I have got. I was unaware of
the data-type functions you had listed. After some further testing
I found that they had the same effect as using the - operator like
    I had been doing.
I did find a solution however. I took the variables as they
were coming in from the Flashvars attribute and saved them in new
flash only variables as numbers. Then I assigned the Flashvars
variables a value of null. I think the .swf was continully going
back to the html variables causing the slow down and this gave it
its on set to look at.
    You can check the new
    test its a lot smoother.

  • Large Photoshop file has caused system slow down.

I have Dual 2.0Ghz G5 which has worked very well since I got it last Spring. Just recently however I've had some slow downs. There are a number of things that I've noticed such as more frequent spinning beachball and font redraw issues.
These issued started since I was working one a massive Photoshop file. I was doing work on a Trade Show booth which eventually resulted in a 10Gb Photoshop file! I realized I probably should have taken steps to reduce the size of the file but that's neither here nor there. Despite the size of the file I was still quite impressed with the performance of my machine. That said, I've found the general performance of the machine since working on this file to be diminished.
I've done all of the typical maintenace items such as repairing disk and permissions via Disk Utility, clearing caches and running Maintenance scripts using Cache Out X, MacJanitor and Tiger Cache Cleaner, but still the performance of my machine has taken a hit.
It's only since this has happened that I've started launching Activity Monitor to try and determine if there is something obvious going on which is hogging resources or not. This for me has raised questions of what is "Normal" for some common tasks. Presently kernal_task is using under 5% of my CPU with 50 threads running which seems like a reasonable number. But it is also using almost 110Mb of RAM and 1.35Gb of Virtual Memory. Both of those numbers seem quite high to me, but I admit that I never looked at them before so I have no gage as to whether these numbers can be considered normal or not.
By all measures the machine still performs pretty good, but as I use this machine every day I know that it's not the same as it was prior to working on that large file. Is there something else related to Photoshop, temporary files, application caches or anything like that, that I should take a look at?
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Dual 2.0Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Troy,
First I would try using a separate HD for the scratch disk.As PS tries to read and write,it has to compete with the OS as it tries to hit its swop files. If Version Cue is on, turn it off.Get rid of any virus checking apps.Check your Ram.If you haven't allowed Tiger to run its cron scripts on a regular basis, and only do periodic maintenance, I would take the time to do an Archive and Install, or even wipe the HD,zero it and install tiger again. This I realize is a drastic measure, time
consuming, and a pain. But if your whole system is slowing down?? Or if you get a new drive set it up to be your primary drive first and test your system on it before moving any of your PS files over from the old HD.Use the old HD as scratch disk
Have you included the use of other utilies to check your HD? Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro.No Norton utilities allowed.Hope this helps as there are a lot of places to look for the problem.

  • What causes a slow mouse/cursor response on a fast machine?

I have a system that has always displayed poor cursor redraw performance with certain adobe applications.   All rendering and other effects are fast, but basic mouse selections and button knobs are extremely unresponsive.   I have searched and searched and can not seem to find out what causes the mouse cursor speed issues.   Does anyone have any ideas as to why my mouse would slow for such basic Interface interactions?    Do I need to change my hardware, settings, displays, BIOS, etc?
Any insight into what the mouse redraw/refresh is called in terms of computing would help me search for a solution.  And if you have a solution as to why my mouse cursor acts drunk and sluggish when interacting with the Adobe UI's in premiere and after effects and sometimes Photoshop I would greatly appreciate the help.
Thank You.  I attached a screen shot of a very basic selection interaction that is dog slow.  The selection box redraws like there is a lag in some process associated with the square box overlay.

Your answer is in this part of your specs:
    > (driving two 30 inch dell monitors)
It takes a long time to draw and redraw the pixels to the screen(s) with such large monitors.
We can mitigate this by making some changes in how our UI is drawn to the screen, and such changes are a rather high priority for use to work on for the near future.

  • CSA 5.1 causes significal slow down on windows 2000 server

We have recently installed CSA 5.1 and agents on a bunch of windows servers. All the shims and enabled and only the default policy agents for windows is enabled.
Applications which does FTP and moves files from one folder to another etc are taking significal slow down.
Processes that used to complete 3 minutes are now taking more than 30 minutes to complete. All the polcies and rules are in test mode.
Should we fine tune the rules first on disable couple of shims first to see what is the cause of this slow down. If we turn off CSA, processes run as normal.

One thing you can try is removing the host from all groups. It will still be a member of the group.
If that doesn't fix performance, remove all policies from the group (and attach them to another group to keep the rules in effect for other hosts) and see if that helps.
This should tell you if it's the agent and\or shim causing the problem, or if a rule is doing it.
Don't forget to move the policies back to the group when you are done.

  • Upgrade to Leopard causing internet slow down?

I just upgraded my G5 PowerMac from Tiger to Leopard. The Mac is plugged via ethernet directly into a NetGear router so I can also access internet wirelessly from my MacBookPro. Since the OS upgrade on my tower, I've noticed marked slow down in internet connectivity: web pages load really slowly and Mail takes forever to pull in my mail. Could Leopard be the culprit? Have run a speed test and results show that I'm getting what I'm paying for in terms of up/download speed, but wait times are ridiculous! Help!

If you look really carefully, you see me alternately scratching my head and hitting it against the wall . I'm almost clueless. I'm going to assume that your Internet access is via WiFi, right? If so, the only thing I can come up with is that when you mirror the display there's some kind of electrical interference that gets thrown up. (And I'll cheerfully admit that I could easily be totally wrong!) If I'm correct though, it is possible that switching your WiFi channel, selecting Internet robustness in the WiFi settings, or moving your notebook as far away from the display as possible might work.

  • Slow down loads with ios 5.1

I have an iPad2 and iPhone4, Is anyone experiencing slower down loads speeds for Apps and Music under iOS 5.1?

The app is called Speed Test. I think that is what Diavonex is referring to. I have the app. I don't know that is absolutely reliable either or all that accurate. It is however, a starting point.
I think you just might experiencing what a lot of users are seeing - an overload on all of the Apple servers. With the new iOS to download and all of the apps that now need to be updated - things were a little sluggish for me for a couple of days. My download speeds for the app store seem pretty good now.
Have you even tried restarting or resetting your iPad to see if that helps?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Slowing down samples with pitch change

I'm looking for the easiest way to slow down a sample within Logic and have the pitch change as well.
For example, my sample is two bars of jazz piano at 140 bpm, I'd really like to take it down to
115-118 bpm and have the tempo change affect the pitch so it's lower and more suited to hip hop.
I use ReCycle, and so far I've tried two ways. I've tried loading the REX file directly from the browser and slowing down the master tempo, but it just stretched my sample out and kept the pitch the same.
I also tried loading the samples to the ESX24 and then adjusting the tempo, with the same effect....
Any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sed,
Use this one, in the *sample editor window*, with the correct sample/audio file in it of course:
Then pick *'classic mode' OR free mode* (both do exactly what you describe) and 'complex' algorithm. You can pick any setting in the Tempo or Pitch fields - they are linked. Click '*process an paste*' and you're done.

  • Work manger: what happens to slowed down executions

    Hi,
does anybody know of a deeper documentation of Weblogic's work manager?
I'm especially interested in how WL handles those requests for executions, that have to slow down in order to meet the scheduling guideline (let's say a fair-share strategy).
Does WL just defer some of the client requests? If so, when does the transaction start?
What happens, if the queue for waiting client requests is growing for a long time (does WL reject requests at some time - when)?.
The edocs (Understanding Work Managers, http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/config_wls/self_tuned.html#wp1063790) do not cover those questions.
    Cheers,
    Holger

Does WL just defer some of the client requests? If so, when does the transaction start?WebLogic will put request in execute queue and wait until execute thread available to start the request processing.
What happens, if the queue for waiting client requests is growing for a long time (does WL reject requests at some time - when)?.
Execute queue will start rejecting request only after it reaches threshold. Threshold can be configured using "Shared Capacity For Work Managers" parameter. Default value is 65536.

  • Periods of inactivity causes a slow down

    hi all..
we have a websphere 6.1 server and a java application which is a multi thread rmi server (a product from an external supplier), residing on the same aix machine, using the same jdk (NOT jvm off course) , and both are connected to oracle.
we have noticed that periods of inactivity in our web application causes a slowdown in performance once they used again, for example you do an operation in the web application go for lunch, do the same thing the suffer a slow performance. lately while the scanning the log of the rmi server, we have noticed that it too has the same issue, after periods (which could be minutes even) the same operation could take 2 times more. our supplier suggested that it might have something to do with swapping/paging the application , but i'm not sure, we first thought the websphere performs some sort of resources clean-ups, but the rmi application has no such thing (not using even a connection pool), so i was thinking that maybe oracle has something to do with it.
is there anyway to monitor such a thing, the memory paging, and oracle connections?

    i the following test:
i create a small servlet under websphere which opened a connection (using jdbc ,no data source) ,executed a query and returned forward only result set , i ran thought the result set, (extracting only one field) and closed the connection, the measured in code the time it took for each action (connection to oracle, execute the statment and itirating the results)
the first time, the itirating thought the query took 800 ms, but subseqient actions (just placing refresh on the page which caused the servlet to do it again) only took half the time.
i waited 10 minutes and did it again, this time connecting to oracle took 5 seconds! (instead 80-100 ms it usually took including the first time) but the query look preformed ok).
i waited 10 more minutes and then did it again, this time it preformed ok, i pressed again but this time the loop itself took 1.2 seconds!, what can i learn from that?
