What Causes Print Size Distortion?

Why would images print significantly smaller than designed (I'm referring to the ruler size, NOT the screen size) when the pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop is set to square pixels and 300 dpi?  Does Premier or AE reset PhotoShop pixel dimenions on the sly in the Master Collection?
We have a summer intern designing business card size (3.5" x 2") inspiration cards on an old laptop that was used for video production with with the CS3 Master Collection and a CS4 Production Premium upgrade.
The 3.5 x 2.0 cards print out at about 3 3/8" by 1 15/16" on every one of the half dozen different printers we've tried them on, including FedEx Office locations and several different Lexmark office printers. Image size is 1050 px by 600 px, i.e., 3.5" by 2.0"
When we lay out a number of cards on an 8" x 11" sheet and save it as a pdf, and then open the pdf in Photoshop and measure the image sizes, each card clearly measures 3.5" by 2" but still prints in the distorted 3 3/8" by 1 15/16" size.
The smaller print problem persists if we save the images as tif, jpg or bmp.  Opening the files and resaving them in CS5.5 doesn't help the problem either.  It's a problem with both the CS3 and CS4 versions of Photoshop on that laptop.
The print dimensions are just off enough to make it look quirky and cause design issues.
It looks like something is forcing the pixels into a smaller rectangular shape but I don't know where else to look to try to fix it.
Any ideas?
Our CS5.5 Master Collection Photoshop is doing the same thing, only not as much.  I'd like to be able to print the cards close to actual size.  The problem persists for 5.5" x 8.5" bookcover designs too.

Thanks for your response.
I meant to mention that the printer dialog box is set to 100% and the problem persists when I print to a pdf as well as save to a pdf or tif or jpg.

  • Video with alpha channel causing frame size distortion

I have a lower-third which I built in AE. The content only occupies about 2/3 the width of the frame however I made sure I exported it at the full frame size as the rest of the video in my Premiere project. Also, I exported it as a quicktime movie with PNG settings to incl. the alpha channel.
When I import it into Premiere CS4, I drop it in on the Video 2 layer over Video 1 which is the main VT and in the preview, it all seems to be appearing as you'd expect. If I hit enter to start rendering, when it finishes I find that the lower third has been stretched the full width of the frame and additionally, Video 1 has been stretched too. I know there's an option in Preferences > General to default everything to the frame size of the sequence but having that tickbox on or off doesn't make any difference.
Does anyone have any ideas what's causing it?

Windows. Alas neither of those options worked. In the end, it was terribly convoluted but I had to export the footage from Premiere without a graphics, then import the video into After Effects and layer my comp over it - then export the final version from AE rather than Premiere. It seemed a very back-to-front way of doing things but if it works...

  • How do I set print size when printing from an IPhone or IPad?

I have an HP Deskjet 3520. Today (11/24/12) is the first time I tried to e-print with both an IPhone and IPad (both IOS 6.01).  I was able to print easily from both devices. I tried a document from the Notes app on the IPhone and a photo from both the IPhone and IPad. The problem is that I had no idea what the print size would be because there were no formatting options prior to the printing. I printed on letter size paper. Do I need an app for that or is there another solution?

Airprint will just default based on the printer options, and the file type. If you had a printer with a separate photo tray it would default to 4x6 or 5x7 if it is in the photo tray and you are printing a picture, most other files would use standard letter size.
The HP ePrint app is what you want for this, it is free in the app store. This will give you options to set the paper type and size.

  • Print size in Photoshop CC does not work after updating

Print size in Photoshop CC does not work after updating, it was working fine before but now when I click to go to print size either from the menu of right chicking when the hand tool is selected, the image just zooms right out until it is a tiny little box in the centre of the screen, no good what so ever, as I say it was working fine before the update.
I am using window 7 with 8 gb of ram and an I7 with a 1GB graphics card.
    Can anyone help please?
    thanks

Check the Image>Image Size and see what the print size is supposed to to be for the open document.
Also, resetting the photoshop cc preferences might fix it.

  • What causes this type of edge distortion?

I exaggerated it on this capture for visibility purposes, but even small amounts of this are annoying when trying to fine tune an image.  This distortion is not visible on import but reveals itself as I adjust the contrast between extreme light and dark.  In this case I am trying for a mostly silhouette, with a narrow range of highlights.  Basically I just want to know what causes it, and if there is a way of avoiding it.   It looks like an firmware error in writing the RAW data, but that is a wild guess.   This was taken with a Nikon D700, 105mm micro-nikkor VR lens & SB900 strobe.

This is a limitation of the fill light slider.

    Hi @dkp529,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are wondering what causes the ink cartridges to bleed inside the printer. I am happy to help!
Most likely this is a mechanical issue with the printer itself, especially if you have changed out the cartridges and the problem is persisting. • Print Size different than what is on screen

I use Elements 9 and print to an Epson 7900, when I have an image 12 1/2" x 18" the actual print size is coming out 12 1/4" x18 any suggestions, It's getting really frustrating......

Make sure the print resolution is the same as the image resolution. You can check in the Elements Editor: File à Print
In the print dialog check actual size.

  • Question about "Print Size"

I am confused and puzzled about "Print Size." First I select the Zoom Tool, then I click "Print Size" in the upper bar. I also have chosen View > Rulers.
What I don't understand is that one inch in the horizontal ruler actually is considerably longer than one inch on the vertical ruler.  I think this is distorting the appearance on my photos in the monitor as compared with the actual prints. The monitor version of my portrait, for example, looks fatter than the printed version. Why is this and why isn't a horizontal inch equal to a verical inch for viewing purposes.
Thank you very much for any help on this.
    Bob

Thank you very much. I changed my monitor to its native resolution and I think this solved the problem.  Bob

  • Document size and final print size

I am beginning a new aerial drawing in Illustrator CS4 on an 2009 imac, to be printed at 40x40". If the document is sized at 40x40, the computer slows down as detail accumulates. Since Illustrator is a vector-based application, can the document size be set smaller than the final print size, say at 20x20" or 10x10", to keep file size down and speed faster, without losing print quality?
    Thanks for any help!

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    without losing print quality?
Depends on the specific content of the file and what exactly you mean by 'setting the document size smaller.'
Better would be to try to discern what is causing the performance issue. Again, that comes down to what the content is.

  • In CC214 PS Why has adobe removed the "print Size Button"  And why have they made the Brush preview window so small you can't see the effects to accurately adjust them?

In CC214 PS Why has adobe removed the "print Size Button"  And why have they made the Brush preview window so small you can't see the effects to accurately adjust them?
These two things need to be remedied in their upgrades because It's become such a bother I've had to revert to older versions of PS.

Yea, and it's a pain to get to.  What was the rational for removing the print size button?   With the magnifying glass tool selected in older versions of Photoshop you would get a button that says "print size" right next to Actual pixels, Fit Screen, Fill Screen. Now I have to go out of my way and dig for it if I want to see the print size.  Of all the buttons you could have taken away, why not fill screen?  I never use that.
Besides the point I just downloaded the Oct Upgrade for PS and surprise! Nothing has changed and these are two big black eyes on newer versions of Photoshop.   The Brush preview window is  unchanged in CC but in CC2014 it's basically worthless.  If you apply a texture to a brush you can't properly see the scale of the texture, the spacing, scatter, etc...

  • Photoshop CS can't show the actual print size & other bugs...

Although I have set in preferences my display's exact dots per inch (which is 92.72) , the rulers in mm and the real print size of the document, when I click on view print size, the document is displayed much smaller than the actual size! I have also set the printer (a virtual pdf printer) in A1 to avoid a possible scaling of the print size. So the software has all the required information, but still it can't figure out the actual print size!  What do you guys think about that? I personally think that the developers couldn't figure out how to do a simple task either!  Even though I work on photoshop CS occasionally, I have found too many bugs to mention.  The most frustrating one, is that it suddenly stops responding to key shortcuts! Then I have to select everything from the menus or save, exit, restart and re-open the documents -now imagine being in the middle of a complicated task...  Another huge annoying bug: When I "Select All" in order to copy a layer, if that layer happens to have some parts surrounded with transparency, Photoshop destroys their position and the image overall, by arbitrarily centering those parts in the pasted frame!!!  Also, too often everything disappears temporarily if I pause for a second while I drag a selection rectangle etc. They haven't even made the cursor capable to move in a gray background without being invisible!  So much for a "professional" expensive application!  Note I have installed the available patches for this version. I know it's a bit old but as I said, I work occasionally and I don't wish to pay hundreds of euros almost each year for a new version upgrade while I'm not even happy with the previous one!   BTW, on this thread editor when I hit "enter" to start a new line, the cursor goes at the beginning of the document!  Now, are the Adobe's web developers drunk or what?  Sorry, I cannot stand too much of stupidity right now...

    New Document preset resolutions
    print resolution: 317,625 pixels/inch
    screen resolution: 92,719 pixels/inch
Hm, your readings seem to imply Photoshop thinks your screen resolution is just about 128 pixels / inch.  Not sure where it might be getting that number.
For what it's worth, on my Vista system I mocked up an image as you described above:  An image of 3614 x 3196 pixels at 317.632 pixels per inch.  My monitors display 100 ppi, and that's what I have set in the Edit - Preferences - Units & Rulers.
When I selected the zoom tool and clicked the [ Print Size ] button it zoomed to 31.48% and when I measured the display width with the ruler it came up 11-3/8", which is just about right.
HOWEVER...  When I right-clicked the image with the zoom tool active, and chose Print Size it came up 8-1/4", which just happens to be about the same amount smaller than proper size that you're seeing.  Sounds like a bona fide buglet in Photoshop CS.
I repeated the performance with Photoshop CS2.  It works fine in CS2 - the [ Print Size ] button and right-click context menu entry both put the image up the same (proper) size.

  • What causes BUFFER GETS and PHYSICAL READS in INSERT operation to be high?

    Hi All,
Am performing a huge number of INSERTs to a newly installed Oracle XE 10.2.0.1.0 on Windows. There is no SELECT statement running, but just INSERTs one after the other of 550,000 in count. When I monitor the SESSION I/O from Home > Administration > Database Monitor > Sessions, I see the following stats:
    BUFFER GETS = 1,550,560
    CONSISTENT GETS = 512,036
    PHYSICAL READS = 3,834
    BLOCK CHANGES = 1,034,232
The presence of 2 stats confuses. Though the operation is just INSERT in database for this session, why should there be BUFFER GETS of this magnitude and why should there by PHYSICAL READS. Aren't these parameters for read operations? The BLOCK CHANGES value is clear as there are huge writes and the writes change these many blocks. Can any kind soul explain me what causes there parameters to show high value?
The total columns in the display table are as follows (from the link mentioned above)
    1. Status
    2. SID
    3. Database Users
    4. Command
    5. Time
    6. Block Gets
    7. Consistent Gets
    8. Physical Reads
    9. Block Changes
    10. Consistent Changes
What does CONSISTENT GETS and CONSISTENT CHANGES mean in a typical INSERT operation? And does someone know which all tables are involved in getting these values?
    Thank,
    ...

The table just have 2 columns, both of which are varchar2 (500). No constraints, no indexes, neither foreign key references are in place. The total size of RAM in system is 1GB, and yes, there are other GUI's going on like Firefox browser, notepad and command terminals.
But, what does these other applications have to do with Oracle BUFFER GETS, PHYSICAL READS etc.? Awaiting your reply.Total RAM is 1GB. If you let XE decide how much RAM is to be allocated to buffers, on startup that needs to be shared with any/all other applications. Let's say that leaves us with, say 400M for the SGA + PGA.
PGA is used for internal stuff, such as sorting, which is also used in determing the layout of secondary facets such as indexes and uniqueness. Total PGA usage varies in size based on the number of connections and required operations.
And then there's the SGA. That needs to cover the space requirement for the data dictionary, any/all stored procedures and SQL statements being run, user security and so on. As well as the buffer blocks which represent the tablespace of the database. Since it is rare that the entire tablespace will fit into memory, stuff needs to be swapped in and out.
So - put too much space pressure on the poor operating system before starting the database, and the SGA may be squeezed. Put that space pressure on the system and you may enbd up with swapping or paging.
This is one of the reasons Oracle professionals will argue for dedicated machines to handle Oracle software.

  • How do i  change print size?

when printing a pdf i try to save paper by printing two sheets to a page . the result is large margins on both sides and in the middle and top and bottom with the print area reduced in size and the print so small it is very difficult to read. i can't work out how to reduce the size of the blank margins and hopefully increase the print size.
can you suggest a way around this?

    Hey,
This issue may be coming into play from a conflict of drivers.  What model HP printers do you have?
Some HP printers use PCL3 and are compatible with using multiple alternate drivers.  I would advise trying to use the HP Deskjet 9800 driver as a way to get past the driver conflict.  For information on how to use an alternate driver please click here.
Let me know if this helps,

  • How do you determine resolution for a given print size in LR?

CS3 displays image resolution for a given size. How do you determine what that resolution is in LR for a given print size, so you know whether you should upsize or downsize for optimum print resolution range?

The only way I know of is to work it out. LR and PS make assumptions that are often not ideal (although the differences may not be noticable). Different printers like different resolutions per inch. For example, I once had an Olympus Dye Sub printer that produced awful prints unless the file was exactly 314 ppi. Not 300, 314. 300ppi looked awful. 314 looked amazing. Many Canon inkjets prefer 300ppi files and most of the better Epson's prefer 360ppi. Lambda printer like 400ppi files.
So find out what the printer likes, and in LR enter that number into the printer dialog. I believe the LR engine interpolates the file based on this and the image size on paper you choose to produce a file of the best size.
Having said all that with most modern domestic and prosumer inkjets the difference is pretty negligable.
