What causes Spontaneous Rebooting in XP?

What causes this? I have a KT3- Ultra and every so often the monitor just goes black and the system reboots. Very annoying.

go system/advanced/start recover/settings/untick auto reboot on error
this will give you a blue screen and some thing to work with

  • Clean XP SP3, Boot Camp 2.1, Everquest II causes spontaneous reboot

    Hello all,
I have a small Boot Camp partition that has XP and Everquest II on it with an October 2006 MacBook Pro C2D (FW800, ATI graphics). That's its sole purpose for existing. Unfortunately, the computer spontaneously reboots a short time after starting the EQ2 client.
I just did a completely clean Windows XP SP3 install (using MSDN XP SP3 32-bit Professional), installed Boot Camp 2.0 and Apple Updated to 2.1, and Windows Updated about a dozen items. I ran the EQ2 client and again, after about 3-4 minutes, the computer reboots.
I would love to get this thing to run reliably. I only use it a few times a year (when traveling overnight, etc.) but it is a great way to while away the time. I would welcome any suggestions, please.
(I tried a Vista 64-bit install but that didn't seem to have many Boot Camp drivers, and I couldn't get the wireless or several other things running.)
    Cheers!

I have the same exact model MBP as you, and from research on the internet all others with the same problem have the same aswell. I honestly believe there is an issue with the ATI graphics on the MBP C2D Merom laptops and EverQuest. I doubt a hardware issue but most likely a driver issue. At one point I used to run EQ2 fine. But, for the past year or so I have had constant reboots when I enter the game.
My most recent attempt actually was ok for the first few minutes but the moment I began to cast a spell it locked and rebooted. I thought it was just EQ2 and the drivers but I also tested EQ1 and I can play that game fine all day long with only one problem. When it starts to rain in the game that results in an automatic lock and reboot otherwise fine. Since you cant turn off the rain that result is not good either. I have not had issues with any other game...LOTRO, EVE, QuakeWars....etc...
A friend who has had several nvidia based mbp's has yet to have one reboot.
I have tried every single driver version I can find and none seem to work. I hope to one day play EQ2 again but, not going to go out of upgrade cycle and buy a new MBP with Nvidia graphics just for that...
Sorry to say I dont have a fix for you but letting you know you are not alone...I and others have the same issue with the same model as you but no fix in sight

  • LTE causing spontaneous reboot?

My AT&T iphone 5 started spontaneously rebooting in the middle of many different tasks. It got to the point where it would just reboot to Apple screen over and over. I restored from an older backup, tried running it with only the barest essential apps and it was still spontaneously rebooting. I turned off LTE and since then it's been fine. Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hi Samantha Ross,
I would recommend that you try restoring your iPhone and forego restoring from the backup in order to isolate the issue as either a software or hardware issue:

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

  • HELP Lightroom 5.6 Spontaneously Reboots Computer

Lightroom 5.6 is installed on a new computer running Windows 8.1 and all drivers and software are up to date.  All other software is running fine including InDesign which has been used heavily for 5-6 hours without problems.  I imported my existing photos into a new catalog in a freshly installed Lightroom 5.6.  After Import, with minimal previews generated on all 11,400 images, I tried generating 1:1 previews on a small group of images and the computer spontaneously (no pause, no blue screen) just rebooted without any warning.  After the reboot I tried to start Lightroom again, received a message saying; “error in previews and Lightroom needs to close”.  Kept receiving this same message each time when starting Lightroom again and was unable to open Lightroom.  Uninstalled Lightroom and ran CCleaner to clear registry entries, cleared all Lightroom preferences and rebooted computer and then re-installed Lightroom.  Thinking that there may be some sort of error in the existing catalog I decided to start a new catalog and re-imported all images again.
(I have subsequently concluded that the error is in the Preview files. Apparently when Lightroom closes in a spontaneous reboot the preview files are corrupted hence the message I received. When the reboots happen during 1:1 preview creation I can successfully restart Lightroom if I first delete the Preview folder.)
After importing all images into the re-installed Lightroom tried creating 1:1 previews and experienced the same spontaneous reboot of the computer.  Thinking that there might have been some kind of error in the downloaded software, I downloaded a new copy of Lightroom 5.6 and re-installed the software (have done this twice now).  Again Lightroom spontaneously rebooted the computer when attempting to create 1:1 previews.  Uninstalled and reinstalled Lightroom in the manner previously described above.  After re-importing all images I decided NOT to create previews this time.  But as I was selecting an image in Library to show large, Lightroom spontaneously rebooted again; however this time I was able to restart Lightroom without receiving an error message.  After restarting Lightroom as I tried to select a new image in Library the computer once again spontaneously rebooted.
At this point I have uninstalled and re-installed Lightroom 5.6 eight times.  Each time I have carefully searched the computer to make sure that all vestiges of the previous installation have been deleted by using CCleaner, deleting ALL Lightroom folders and searching the registry to make sure that there was nothing left of the prior Lightroom installation.  I also deleted the catalog and all presets.  So at this point I am at a loss as to what my next step should be.
    Any suggestions?  Thank you.
Background: I started using Lightroom when Adobe purchased RAWshooter and upgraded all their uses to Lightroom version 1. So I have used every version through Lightroom 5.6. I have Lightroom installed on three other computers and they all run without an issue. This is the first time in all the years I have been using light that I have encountered any problem.

    Thanks for the responses.
I have already installed HWMonitor when dj_page suggested it may be due to overheating yesterday.
Tried to insert a print sceeen but file was too big.
The CPU package is running at 62°C
the 4 cores vary from 61,62,64,54
I don't know if this is hot or normal.
Once I get into Lightroom I have no way of telling what the temps are as the second I generate a 1:1 preview the computer reboots.
All three case fans and CPU fan are running.
Don't know what else I can check.
The case is a mid-tower Antec with lots of space and well designed ventilation.
Currently I'm using the Intel graphics display built into the motherboard. Have a new graphics card coming because I suspect that the added load of the video onto the CPU may be causing the issue. What do you all think?

  • Help! Spontaneous reboots on iMac w. 10.7.5

    Hi,
So I have this mid-2007 iMac, purchased new, never any problems, swapped out the (still working) original hard-drive for a bigger, faster one last year. Here's the hardware overview:
       Model Name:    iMac
      Model Identifier:    iMac7,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:    2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
      L2 Cache:    4 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
      Bus Speed:    800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:    IM71.007A.B03
      SMC Version (system):    1.20f4
      Serial Number (system):    W87****X86
The system started out on Leopard, I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Lion as those came out, with all incremental OS updates regularly downloaded and installed.
Last night, I let it install 10.7.5. Since this morning, thus far I have experienced 3 completely spontaneous reboots of the system. Good thing I save my work every few minutes ;-).
The kernel boot log helpfully reports that "Previous Shutdown Cause: 0" - which I've looked up to indicate a power failure; however, I'm on a stable circuit with surge protection, and there are no signs of power issues with the other devices on this circuit (desklight, printer, powered speaker). The log also shows these entries for SMC:
    Sep 26 19:20:19 localhost kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    Sep 26 19:20:19 localhost kernel[0]: SMC::smcReadKeyAction ERROR $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
Sep 26 19:20:19 localhost kernel[0]: SMC::smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap == NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
Which I assume are due to the fact that after the latest self-reboot, I reset SMC according to Apple support guidelines. I have also followed the guidelines for resetting PRAM/NVRAM. Yet the problem persists.
Has my iMac's power unit spontaneously decided to take a dump at exactly the same time I installed this latest OS update? What else can I do to diagnose and above all fix the issue? Maybe roll back to LKGC?  Any ideas appreciated!
On a sidenote, I am also seeing the "indexing not working" issue reported by other 10.7.5 users.
    Thanks, -oliver
    <Edited by Host>

Update from OP: I was close to swapping out the power unit in this iMac, but decided to first try an upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Since the update, five days ago, the system has been up and running and remains stable. The persistent spontaneous reboots due to "Shutdown Cause: 0" have no longer occurred. This would seem to indicate that my power unit is indeed a-ok, and that the shutdowns were being cause by an incompatibility between the hardware in this iMac and the 10.7.5 upgrade which was previously installed...

  • Spontaneous reboots G5

More and more often I experience spontaneous reboots on my G5.
The computer works fine, apart from this problem, but it seems to have become slower lately.
Disk utility shows no problems - should I invest in DiscWarrior to see if it can find any problems?
I am running Time Capsule with the computer - can that cause the trouble?
    Any other suggestions?

  • Spontaneous reboots?

My Droid Turbo 64 is only a week or 2 old, and reboots spontaneously. Does anyone know why this happens? This morning it rebooted 5 times in the hour it took me to get ready for work. I would hate to have to return to the store and reload all my apps, pics, etc..

We don't want you to have to return your phone either, sshhaazz. Has it been this way since day one? Can you recall if any new apps have been added that may cause the reboot? Please try the phone in Safe Mode to see if it still reboots and let me know what happens. http://vz.to/12bThaX

  • Locked Phone spontaneously reboots after 1.1.1 update

I have a "normal" iPhone that I updated last night with the 1.1.1 software update. (By "normal" I mean that I hadn't hacked the phone at all). After the update, I downloaded a single song from the WiFi iTunes store and attempted to play the song. The phone spontaneously rebooted. After the reboot I was able to play the newly purchased song.
This morning the phone won't stop spontaneously rebooting. Typically happens when texting and using the keyboard, but has also happened at other times.
I reset the phone and this didn't seem to help at all.
Not sure where to go next - help?!?!?!

Mine has been doing the same thing. I have yet to figure out what's causing it, and I'm taking it in to my local Apple store tomorrow evening to have one of the Geniuses look at it.
Besides that issue, the phone part of the phone isn't exactly working as intended: it lights up while near my ear to talk, yet when I pull it away to push a button while still on the phone (like speaker, contacts, etc), the phone goes black, is unresponsive to touching the screen, and pushing the home button does nothing whatsoever. I can still talk with the person on the other end of the line, but I am having to reset the phone by pushing both buttons in order to hang up...this issue started before this last update, and I've tried being patient with it, but now with the random turning off and sticking on the logo screen, I've decided it's time to have it looked at.
If I find out what's going on with the sticking on the logo and randomly turning off, I will let you know on here so you can get yours back in working order. =)

  • IPad won't power off and tends to spontaneously reboot

When I try to power off my iPad (pressing the sleep button then sliding the "slide to power off" slider), it displays the wait progress indicator, goes black just briefly, then the silver Apple boot up logo appears as the device reboots which results in the device remaining on.
Worse yet, the device tends to frequently spontaneously reboot, often when the home screen is displayed and not performing any user operation.
I really don't want to restore the iPad as this results in metadata loss for thousands of audio files (Apple really needs to address this inadequacy and provide a Time Machine back up option for us users who choose to manually manage files on iOS). Is a device restore my only recourse?

It sounds like something is crashing your iPad resulting in this spontaneous reboot. Without knowing what you're running or if you've done anything unusual to your iPad, it's hard to say. There is a remote possibility that it's hardware related, but I would go the software route first. The only way to find the culprit, without completely restoring (which I would actually recommend here) is to one by one delete program apps and see if the problem ceases.
If you completely restore and the problem disappears, then it was software related. If you backed up your iPad before restoring, you should be able to restore it from the backup thus retaining any data you had stored previously. Of course, this would also reinstall the offending app that was causing this behavior in the first place, but at least you'd know it is software and not hardware related which obviates a visit to your local Apple Store.

  • PM8M3-V H spontaneously reboots

    Hello,
I'm having problems with the following:
Motherboard:  PM8M3-V H (3x PCI slots) - cannot find H/W version or serial number
    BIOS:               W7211VMS V3.1 060906 18:12:27
    CPU:                Pentium D 945 SL9QQ 3.4ghz
    RAM:                2gb, 2x1gb PC2700 (DDR333), CL=2.5, 2.5V
                            (Crucial CT12864Z335.16TFY) (Micron Tech. 16VDDT12864AY335F2)
    PSU:                Trust PowerMaster 14888,  570W
                           +3.3V    32A, 360W
                           +5V       30A, 360W

                           -12V      1.0A, 12W
    VGA:               Onboard
The PC randomly and spontaneously reboots under moderate CPU load, such as running a SpyBot S&R scan.  This occurs when running Windows XP and also in Windows XP PE booted from Hirens Boot CD v15.2.
Note: This is not a Blue Screen of Death followed by a reboot, it just reboots without warning.
Memory errors are sometimes found when running Memtest86 v4.20, but other times it can run four or more complete passes without any errors.
While trying to locate the problem, I have replaced:
    *  The CPU (Was a Celeron 3ghz CPU)
    *  The current RAM is from a know working system, in total I've to installed 3 different sets of RAM, also tried running with a single DIMM
    *  The hard disk (Used to be IDE, now its SATA)
    *  The onboard graphic card with a generic GeForce2 MX64 AGP card
    *  The PSU with 400W one.
I've tried to systematically adjust some of the DRAM settings, such as the speed and CAS Latency with no improvement.
I've also tried booting, directly after clearing the CMOS (Default settings), and with the 'Optimised' settings without success.
So far I've spent about 4 days trying to solve this issue.  I'm about ready to throw out the mobo.
    Thanks, Sean

Cheap PSU = Badly designed + poor quality components used from the cheapest manufacturer + a low life expectancy under any load as it will deteriorate quickly = within a 3 month period of use its dropped by 25% on all its rails and it starts to have very violent voltage ripple that causes damage and very unstable operation
to avoid problems like this GET A QUALITY UNIT like i already suggested (Corsair and Seasonic are amongst the best PSU's out there) as the ones you have are very cheap units from what looks like mass manufactured PC's that they make to just barely power the components for its expected life plus 6-12months and no more (maybe got a 1-3 years warranty and they expect it to be useless and broken down within a few months after its ran out as they do that to make sure you have to buy another one!) so don't use ones you pulled out old PC's from manufacturers unless its got a OCZ, Coolermaster, Corsair or Seasonic PSU as the ones they use are useless Generic ones that are glorified paperweights!
Please stop testing cheap and nasty PSU's as its not going to be of any help thank you!

What causes TV screen to freeze but sound continue on TV when using Air Play from I Phone 4?

First try rebooting ATV and router. Beyond that, it's probably something within the network, typically interference.
To get a report of the network go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC). Look for signal strength and noise.
    If on wifi try ethernet.

  • What caused the iBook problem?

I'm writing this for my wife, as she's unable to use her iBook for more than a few minutes before it locks up.
I'm serving in the military overseas. My wife and I both use Apple products to chat, email, etc. When I spoke to her yesterday, she was frantic. Her iBook G4 apparently started making a strange noise and then stopped working altogether.
I asked her what she had tried, and she explained that she spent over an hour on the phone with Apple support (I knew AppleCare might come in handy). The first support person she spoke with was, for lack of a better term, an idiot. This was confirmed by the third support person she spoke with. I'll explain later.
The problem was that when she tapped her spacebar to wake up the computer, it didn't wake up completely. She got a grey screen, Apple logo, and that was it. I told her to be patient, that maybe it was reseting after an update (that was before I knew about the 10.4.6 update being available).
    Her computer auto-updates every Monday.
I had her turn off the computer by holding down the power button. I then had her disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. I did this on a hunch (just in case the computer had a heat problem). She reconnected the power cord, pressed the power button, and it was back up and running - for about 5 minutes.
Then the computer began making a not-so-funny noise again, and the spinning-beach-ball-of-death reared it's ugly head and wouldn't go away.
The first support person had her use the install/boot disk that came with the computer. That was Panther. We're using Tiger. Bad idea.
When the boot/install disk did not appear to be working, the first support person had her abort, and she was prompted with little phrases like "are you sure you want to quit, doing so now may damage your files" or something like that.
He just had her keep clicking "OK" and eventually got tired of talking to her and told her the hard drive was bad and that she was SOL.
The second support person was apparently too busy to troubleshoot any further and cut directly to "sorry, you're SOL".
The third support person was a little more helpful in that he talked her through connecting the iBook to her G5 PowerPC iMac to attempt pulling the files over to the iMac (she had already resigned herself to the fact that the iBook hard drive was on it's last leg).
She had asked the first support person about doing this and he said that if the files were corrupt on the iBook, they might corrupt the iMac, and that it was a bad idea. Not a very bright guy, considering the files would be copied to a folder, and wouldn't overwrite the iMac's system files.
She started to transfer files and the iBook froze again. She repeated the steps I had her do earlier, managed to get a CD in the the drive, copied a few folder successfully to the CD, checked the CD to see if the files were there (success!) but then the iBook died before she could get the CD out. She's working on holding down the track pad button while rebooting to see if it'll spit out the CD as I type this.
So, in addition to wanting to know how to resolve the problem, I'd like to know what caused it.
What caused so many people to have alleged hard-drive problems within a day or two of each other?
    Is this Apple's first virus?
Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?
Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?
Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?
Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far?
My wife has been using Mac's for over 9 years. I've only been using them for 2 years. Up until now, I've had a lot of confidence in Apple to be a solid platform, even if not the fastest platform. This experience is not inspiring me to purchase another Apple computer.

Her files probably won't fit on a CD; unless she has less then 700Mb.
    1."Is this Apple's first virus?"
    Negative
    2. "Is this the work of a disgruntled Apple employee working in the updates department?"
No, I don't think so. Apple tries these out to try and avoid problems with their updates. Things happen that are not expected. They wouldn't put anything out unless they thought it was ready.
    3. "Is this an evil Apple plot to force us to by MacBook Pro's that won't run Virtual PC?"
First off, look at #1 and think about what platform is notorious for virus problems (Mac has had not had any virus out breaks so far). There have been some "malware/macro" software that was meant to mess with Apple Computers. The most recent that was was over exaggerated was nothing special; MacWorld worked pretty hard to get it to effect their machine. As long as you know what you are downloading and where you are getting it from, you should have no problem.
If you want VPC to work on a MacBook Pro; don't look to Apple. You should talk to Microsoft's Mac Department because Apple announced the Universal Binary switch a long time ago (with developer help) so that software companies could make the switch easier. If anyone is to blame; its Microsoft [they are busy working out their problems with Vista; I am guessing it will be awhile before you see VPC for MBP;) ]
"Will running the 10.4.6 hurt or help the situation?"
My opinion would to just reinstall Mac OS X after backing up the hard drive. That would probably fix your problem. Once OS X is installed; update the software.
"Why is there such inconsistency in Apple support and aren't they supposed to log their trouble-shooting steps performed thus far"
Once in a while Apple's personnel may make human errors. The second one you talked to may have seen her work-up and just reiterated what was said. They have resources we don't, but they can't really go beyond them because they can't see the product, and they are just call support. You may have to send it in.
So in 9 years, you have had this one problem. We can't really tell you what is wrong with the computer because we can't see it ourselves; we can only give suggestions/ideas. Tell them her story, explaining her situation (military etc) and then see if they can help. She may want to bring it into her local Apple Store/Reseller. She can make a reservation on the website or at the store. She can get better feedback in person.
    Just some of my thoughts,
    Jon
