What causes the spinning wheel to appear all of time with my mac mini
I've had my mac mini for a few years and within the last several months I constantly get the spinning wheel and a longer delay between actions. I even upgraded my internet connectivity speed. Any suggestions?

How do I get the camera on my Dell Monitor to work with my Mac Mini?
ow do I get the camera on my Dell Monitor to work with my Mac Mini?
If the camera registers itself as a standard UVC compliant Cameras (UVC = USB Video Class) then the Mac will recognise and use it with nothing else needed as the Mac has a built-in UVC driver. If it does not act as a UVC type device then you could look at the following third-party drivers.
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/
http://www.ioxperts.com/dcam.html
I have seen some reports suggesting that at least some Dell monitor models will act as UVC compatible webcams and should 'just work'. -

What causes the spinning rainbow ball?
My MacBook Pro constantly freezes when I'm working in a Word document or while on the internet. What causes this and how can this be avoided? I have cleared the Download and Trash folders, but it didn't help.
There are any number of causes for example when the OS is writing to or reading from the hard drive, if you have run low on available RAM for the number of concurrently running applications, if the hard drive is full, if there is a crashed process, or if there is a problem with the OS itself. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on beachballing.

The problems began when I deleted a ymail account and replaced it with a new ymail account. My main account is a gmail. At some point Yahoo appear to have changed the suffix from ymail.com to yahoo.com. I could not and indeed cannot get iCloud to accept my new account. I kept getting told that my id and password could not be configured. Eventually I tried it on my mini iPad and "hey presto!" no problem at all. My new yahoo account nestles comfortably in iCloud on the mine iPad. But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.Killerfinch wrote:

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do. -
For some reason everytime I add things to my phone this "other" section grows just a little more. I am not sure entirely what I might be able to do to delete this and if I may be able to keeo it away in the future. I thought restoring my phone would do it but this only reduced it I still have space taken up by it. If anyone has any solutions for me please help...
There will always be a certain amount of "Other". Amounts to .8gB could be considered normal.

What is the best DVD burner to buy for use with my Mac?
I have a MacMini with a DVD player/CD burner. I would like to buy an external DVD burner for use with the MacMini and my Tiger OS. Could I get some thoughts on purchasing a good external burner and using the best burning program with it. Thanks
Paul,

$179.99 includes full version Toast 7
$129.99 includes Toast 6 Lite
The $129.99 unit that comes with Toast 6 Lite can be found on the web for a lot less. Later, if you outgrow Toast 6 you can upgrade to Toast 8 (which is the latest version).
External Multi-Format DVD RecorderDRX-830UL/T $129.00

My experience with Lacie and Sony burners has always been positve and Toast is good to have around, it's always complimented iDVD well (in addition to having a host of other useful features).
Note:
I'm not familiar with any of Toast 6 lite's features, but I do know you can burn DVD's with it. It adds another means of authoring a DVD outside of iDVD. -
I'm having trouble with the spinning wheel
What causes the spinning wheel? And how do I fix it? Should I be running a maintenance procedure periodically? And if so, how is that done? As you can tell, I am pretty computer illiterate. I am running Safari 5.1.10 as my browser.

Google Desktop and the spinning wheel of death
For anyone who is reading this who has installed Google products on Leopard: DON'T!
I don't know what exactly caused the spinning wheel, but what I can tell you is that I used Onyx on my system. After that, I had huge problems with my node structure. I fixed those problems with Disk Warrior 4 and was able to at least get my computer to boot reasonably fast, but not as fast as it should. I kept getting the dreaded, spinning wheel! Why? Why? Why?, I asked myself.
Well, after reading someone else's post about running activity monitor to see what could be running, I saw that Google's Dektop analyzer was running. I quit it, only for it to restart automatically by itself.
I ended up getting CleanApp to delete a bunch of stuff I didn't need to see if that would get rid of the problem. When that didn't, I went back to the Google products and delted anything and everything Google from both Library/Preferences folders as well as from my Applications folder.
I can tell you that I am now back running smoothly and typing this note faster than I could type anything for the past 5 hours!!! Woohoo!
You can't imagine how frustrated I was. In the middle of homework and I get crunched by the spinning wheel of death.
So, for all of you who are running Google Desktop...beware! Even if you quit from your activity monitor, it will launch again immediately after. You just have to delete the darn thing.
I'm not sure if Onyx affected it or not. That's for someone else to figure out. But I haven't had good luck with both Onyx and now Google Desktop, so I'm steering far, far clear of both of those applications for now.
Hope this helps someone. Here is an update on my situation with Google Desktop. I found out that was not the problem at all. Actually, Software Update - 10.5.2 caused the problem. I even wiped the drive, reinstalled 10.5.1 and then upgraded again to 10.5.2 and the same issues arose. The spinning pinwheel (beachball of death) would appear for a few seconds before most operations and the system would not shut down after the Updating Boot Cache notice appeared.
I contacted Apple support by phone and they walked me through a number of steps to try and resolve. When those steps did not work, which included setting up an alternate user and trying to log of from that user, they assigned me a incident number and notified me that they'll have to scale it up to engineering to see if there will be a solution. -
What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
What is the cause of the Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD) and how can we fix it?
I get the SWOD using Safari, Mail, Google chrome, Firefox, Mathematica, and other programs. This cannot be a browser plug-in issues as other forums suggest. I suspect a windows process at the root but I don't enough to know how to trace. Does anyone know what's causeing this epidemic?I'm having a similar problem. Someone PLEASE HELP!
I'll start with just an example of what I've been facing. During the composing of this post, when I switched from Firefox to Word, I had to wait 60 seconds before the spinning wheel stopped and I got a cursor. I then copied one set of Etrecheck results, switched back to Firefox, hit Command-v to paste and had to wait 45 seconds or so for the spinning wheel to stop. And the paste operation didn't paste until I hit Command-v again (with no wait this time).
Here's what I've done:
I tried three times to run a scan with avast! and all three times the scan was unable to complete.
I restarted holding down Command-r and it found and fixed many permissions, but found no problems with files.
I ran Etrecheck in a "Safe Boot" and in a normal startup and there were two things that were tagged as "[failed]" in the normal startup:

User Launch Agents: [failed][email protected]
I apologize for taking up so much space, but here are the results from both Etrecheck runs:

my macbook pro 2011 is just hanging and showing the spinning wheel every 2 seconds after i installed OS Yosemite 2 days back. there is still a lot of spce in my hard disk so thats not an issue! What can i do to fix my MBP- please help?!
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

I click, the spinning wheel goes on and on, and finally it clicks in! Does it everytime time ...Could it be MacKeeper fault? I have 90GB available on my mid 2009 13inch MacBookPro with 8GB memory. I am Mac OS X Lion. This is disconcerting. Thanks for any help.
First, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk. You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds before the screen changes. This has been happening the past 24 hours. Any ideas?
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
