What  codecs does Elements 7 understand?

Does anyone know what codecs Elements 7 understands?
I have both .avi and .mp4 files that I'd like to edit.
I believe the avi files have been encoded via Xvid.
Can I make Elements 7 work with these types of files?
Thanks
-Mike

Michael,
As Steve says, it is "best" to feed PE the files that it likes the best, DV-AVI.
Now, PE *will* work with many files in other formats, provided that you have the proper CODEC's installed on your system. It's less about PE's working with CODEC's, and more about it working with file types. For instance, PE can Export to most CODEC's, that you have properly installed.
Now, let's go back to "feed[ing] PE the files that it likes the best... " Since every AV file that you Import will be converted into DV-AVI for editing by PE, I find that it is better to do this conversion outside of PE. NLE's, like PE, really do not need to do extra work, and the conversion of AV files IS extra work. NLE's are designed to edit AV files, not convert them.
I use a shareware converter, DigitalMedia Converter (Deskshare), and it works almost perfectly for me. It WILL use every properly installed CODEC on any of my systems. At last count, my workstation had about 450 and the laptop 340 installed (Audio & Video). It allows batch conversion, is quick and quite good. There are freeware, and other shareware converters available. I do not use any others for 99% of my work, as DigitalMedia Converter just handles it - including DivX and Xvid, with hardly a hiccup. For me, it's about the best US$40 that I've spent, right next to the "Pro" version of QT.
In my workflow, I always start a Project by organizing and converting all of my Assets, so they work best with my NLE. If I had a bunch of non-DV-AVI files, I'd gather them into a folder, "Video," and make a folder, "Converted Video." While I was getting any stills ready in PS, I'd turn DigitalMedia Converter loose with the conversion of all Video Assets to DV-AVI with PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit stereo Audio. By the time my stills are re-sized and corrected for TV (assuming I'm in a DVD Project, like I normally am), my Video files are all converted and ready for Import. I do the same thing for all MP3 Audio Assets, as PCM/WAV (to spec above) is what works best.
Now, I'm ready to Import and get to editing, which is what PE (or any NLE really) is all about. They use a good amount of a system's resources already, so I do not want them bogged down having to convert file types also. Besides, 3rd party converters usually do a much, much better job with the conversion - that is what THEY do best.
It will save you a lot of grief if you incorporate ideas, like these, into your workflow, and do them outside of your NLE. Also, I find that it's also better to organize one's Assets into the Project's folder hierarchy, than to grab Assets from all over the system. It pays off, when you wish to "archive" the Project. It also means that I am not working with my original Assets, but copies that I have placed in the proper folders, within my Project's structure.
Now, you do not have to do this. You can try and force your NLE to work with whatever you try to feed it. Your results *migh* be OK, but I'll bet that you encounter problems someplace, even if it's just sluggish performance.
There are several recommendations for freeware and inexpensive shareware converters in the FAQ's section. Be sure to read all of those, not just the ones for your version of PE. If a program is recommended in the FAQ, it's because they work. I just happen to have some others, that I own, know and that work for me.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • What codec does SpeedGrade render mov files to?

I just  rendered my first SG project. It was exported to MOV but my QT player won't play it as it's apparently missing a codec. What codec do I need?

Most likely you rendered to an uncompressed codec (i.e. AJA/BM uncompressed)
Click "Other..." -> Quicktime and then choose a codec that was installed with Quicktime player. For example H.264

  • What codec does iDVD 09 use to burn the DVD?

    Hello All,
I might be looking in the wrong place, but I couldn't find this information. Does it use MPEG2? Can I use H.264?
    thanks,
    Mike

DVDs use 720x480 mpeg2, with AC3 audio or PCM audio up to 24bit/96khz. They also accept halfD1 mpeg2 and mpeg1, although that is not used much at all these days. Every DVD you are probably familiar with uses 720x480 mpeg2.
H.264 is not part of the DVD spec; it is used in Blu-ray, as are VC1 and mpeg2 in high-def resolutions.
Also, it doesn't matter what format you feed iDVD; it will transcode to mpeg2. Just be sure to use a good editing format that won't degrade quality. H.264 is a bad choice; the transcoding to mpeg2 will introduce problems.

  • Photoshop Elements cannot load mts video and says I need to install the proper codec. What codec do I need and where do I find it?

I have a new Dell Inspiron with 8G memory and an Intel i7 processor. I just installed PSE12 and Premier12. I tried to import some video into the Organizer, but the thumbnails are just grey squares, and when I double-click, I get an error message that the system does not have the required codec installed. I don't know what codec this might be or where to find out. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
Let me add that I'm running Win 8.1 AND the Premier 12 package runs the video clips just fine. The problem seems limited to the Organizer display.

  • FAQ: What OS does Photoshop Elements run on, or Will PSE run on my computer?

There are many different combinations of Photoshop Elements (PSE) and the Operating Systems (OS) it is supported on. Here is a table to help identify which versions of PSE are supported on which versions of Windows and Macintosh. By "supported", we mean that the application is designed and thoroughly tested to work on. Just because a platform is "unsupported" does not necessarily mean that it will not work. What it does mean is that you operate the application on that platform at your own risk. In most cases, a version of PSE is "unsupported" on a specific platform simply because it was released before that version of the OS.

Regarding what versions will or will not work on certain operating systems...I would question even your Photoshop Elements FAQ reference.
What Adobe has not tested is not the same the impression that the program does not work on a certain operating system it has designated as " - ".
I have not seen a Premiere Elements document comparable to this FAQ document that you present for Photoshop Elements.
    I have found no problem installing and running Premiere Elements 4, 7, 8.0/8.0.1,  9.0/9.0.1, 10, 11, 12/12.1, 13/13.1 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit or Windows 8.1 64 bit.
The version updates, if available, should be used to give special obvious features as well as other less obvious ones.
In the case of the current version, Premiere Elements 13/13.1, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and OSX 10.7 are not supported. Interestingly, I have found that you can
download the Premiere Elements 13 tryout from Adobe to a Windows XP computer, but you cannot install it.
Also, on a comparative basis, Premiere Elements version 32 versus 64 bit application
    Windows
Premiere Elements 10, 11, 12, and 13 are 64 bit applications only when they are specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Premiere Elements earlier then 10 are 32 bit applications whether they are run on Windows 32 bit computer or Windows 64 bit computer.
    Mac
Premiere Elements 9 was the first version to be offered for Mac as well as Windows.
Premiere Elements Mac was not available as a 64 bit application until version 11 - and with Mac 64 processor.
    Miscellaneous
Premiere Elements as a 32 bit application will block you from importing still images beyond a certain total pixel count.
Lots of other details, but let us start with these.
Please let us know if you need clarification on any of the above.

Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0.1 - New Project
I getting a "codec not installed" message for simple .m4a and mp4 files.  I am trying to create a video of gameplay footage (.mp4) and adding a song (.m4a CD file).
I get this message for both files when I attempt to import them into my project.
I have used these files successfully before and this is the first time using Adobe Elements 8.0.1 since re-installing Win 7x64 about a year ago.
I guess there can never be too much information so:
I use nVidia's capture program (Shadowplay) for my footage using the .mp4 codec..
The music I am trying to use is from a (manufactured - store bought physical) Louis Armstrong CD and is the .m4a file.
I did see Adobe suggest removing any "codec programs" and the only one I can think of is called MPC-HCx64.  No difference when it is removed.
I have used Audacity to reformat the audio file into .wav and .mp3 files.  The .wav file is acceptable, but not the .mp3 file.
According to Adobe's site, these files are "supposedly" supported.  Am I missing something?  Any ideas?

In all cases, please review the copyright situation with regard to your files. For now, I will assume there is not.
For the music, please consider taking the file into iTunes and converting it to the wav version.

With the .mp4 video...your message does not say what codec - video or audio or both. The "mp4" is just the file extension
(container format) that wraps the video and audio compression). You can download and install the free codec utility GSpot
and look at Video Name Codec Status and Audio Name Status information.

  • How Does Elements Store Photos?

Is just gotten version 11 for the mac.  I imported one folder of images (which has subfolders) to try out the organizer.  I think I need to understand better what Elements is doing with my images before I proceed.
When I look at the left pane, I see Albums (there are none yet) and My Folders.  There I see the folders of images that were imported.  They are all shown at the same level, with no subfolders.
This leads me to believe Organizer is not actually making copies of my images and importing them, but merely creating a catalogue that points to them.  Do I have that right?  I can use Albums to organize the photos, but once again, the Albums won't contain the photos, but only point to them, correct?
My photos are woefully organized in folders on my hard drive.  I'm almost thinking that before I import into Elements, I should get my folders organized and cleaned up outside of Elements.  Even though I could have good Album structure in Elements. it bothers me that down there at the actual folder level, it's all a piece of @#%&.  Can I use Organizer to do that folder organizing even before I start the Album organizing?
How does Elements handle editing of images?  iPhoto (which copies photos into its catalog), keeps a version of the original when editing is done.  Does Elements do that, or is there only one version of IMG_001 no matter how many edits are applied to it?
If the images are kept in my original folder structure and I edit an image outside of Elements, when I open the image in Elements, do I get the edited image?
I'm trying to decide between iPhoto and Elements, mainly for organizing purposes, so answers to these questions will help me decide.  I appreciate your help.

Under normal circumstances, the organizer is just a database: it merely makes entries for the photos you import, without copying anything. The one exception is the "from iphoto" command, which duplicates the photos in your iphoto library in another location (although, again, the copies are not stored "in" PSE). The reason for this is that poking around at the iphoto library from outside iphoto is a sure way to eventually corrupt the library and lose the photos it contains.
If a photo is in the organizer, you can save as many PSE versions as you like. This is one advantage that organizer has over iphoto. You also have access to all the versions all the time (unlike iphoto where you must lose your edited version to get back to the original.) Overall, I would not say that organizer is a clear winner over iphoto, but this is probably the biggest point on its side in the debate.

  • What exactly does the global switch command line do ?

    Hello All
Just foraging in the dark world of APP-V. I have a question which I cannot find answer for through google.
There are powershell commands to publish an APP-V application globally. What exactly does the global switch do ?
I understand it makes the application available to everyone on the machine for anyone who logs onto that machine.
However in the absence of this global switch the application is still available to all users who logon to that particular machine. So what exactly is the reason for using the global switch ?
    Thanks

Correct, the global switch makes the application accessable for all users logging on to that system.
This feature is required for some packages, like Office. But it is ofter used for applications used by everyone, like Adobe Reader.
However in the absence of this global switch the application is still available to all users who logon to that particular machine. So what exactly is the reason for using the global switch ?
A package can be added to the system but until it is published a user cannot start it. They won't see any shortcuts in their startmenu/desktop/etc.
So after you added the package to the system, it must be published to a user or globally (every user) to start it.

  • What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in Print do?

What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in the Print module do?
I know it's a controversial button, especially now that there are proofing options available. Also, since you're using it "blind" it's impossible to know how much or what it's really doing.
Does anyone know if it's e.g.. the same as going to quick develop and going up on "exposure", or "brightness", or "shadows"... How exactly is it brightening the image, and is +100 a full stop or how is it calibrated?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

    Ooops,
Obviously there is NO brightness control in LR...is the print adjustment similar to an exposure adjustment or more like moving the "shadows" and "whites" adjustments (which if I understand corrrectly, moves tones above or below mid tones, but not highlights or blacks)?

  • What exactly does "Secure Empty Trash" do?

There's very little technical detail on the web about this. I'd like to understand exactly what secure empty trash does.
What method does it use to overwrite?
How does it deal with temp files?
Why does it take so long?
Why, when there's only one file in the trash, does it always claim it's erasing 9 files?
What other files is it erasing in addition to the visible trash contents?
Can it work across network connections and external drives?
Has the method changed in Leopard?
    etc.. etc..
Feel free to get all technical, if you know the answers!
    Thanks!

What method does it use to overwrite?
It writes over the files with 0's.
How does it deal with temp files?
Not sure what you mean. It treats any file in the trash the same. Could you elaborate?
Why does it take so long?
Because it has to first write over the item with 0's, then delete the item.
Why, when there's only one file in the trash, does it always claim it's erasing 9 files?
What other files is it erasing in addition to the visible trash contents?
    It's a bug.
Can it work across network connections and external drives?
    Yes.
Has the method changed in Leopard?
    Not that I know of.

  • What exactly does a switch do with the frames it recieves?

I've become ultra confused all of a sudden.
Switch is a layer 2 device. So this means it deals with frames (builds and examines them). So when it receives a frame, it looks inside to see where the destination mac address is. But since the mac address is on some further away network, and not directly connected to the switch, how in the world can it decide which way to send it? The switch doesn't have a routing table so theres no way of determining. So it either sends it down a trunk link or out all the vlans associated with the source port. Now if its sending the frame out all the vlan ports then this certainly does not break up broadcast or collision domains. Switches have no idea of the topology of a network and therefor must be sending frames out every possible hole they can to get rid of it.
But this would end up being huge problems. If I have a router on a stick topology, with trunk link. And a frame gets sent out all possible ports and a trunk link, the packet is going to get to the source, then after being routed through the router and come back it will be sent to the source again. Also isn't it making a storm if the router routes the packet back to the switch and the switch then sends the same packet down the trunk link, since everything gets sent to the trunk by default?
Or not even with a trunk link. Just linked up to any router. If the mac address isn't directly connected to the switch it must send the packet out every port it can because it doesn't have any idea what else to do with. And if it sends it to the router, and the router says, no it has to go back towards you, wouldn't the packet just go in circles for years with the router saying, "its in your direction", and the switching saying "i don't know where this is supposed to go, so i'll send it anywhere i can"
thanks for any help at all. really frustrated.

    Hi There
In your topology example "Host A -> Switch1 -> Switch2 -> Switch3 -> Host B", for Host A to have any chance of communicating with Host B, they would have to be in the same VLAN/Subnet, as you have no layer 3 device to route between different VLAN's/Subnets.
Therefore when Host A wants to send a frame to Host B it would check its own MAC address table to see if it has an entry for Host B. If it does, it will send the packet with the frame towards Host B. The source MAC addresses will be that of Host A and the destination MAC addresses will be that of Host B.
If Host A does not have the MAC address of Host B it will send an ARP request out on to the wire to Sw1.
Either way, as this is a single VLAN/Subnet, the way Sw1 and the other switches treat the frame will be exactly the same.
Sw1 will receive the frame and check the source MAC address against its CAM table. If no entry exists, it will add the MAC of Host A plus the port to which Host A is connected to its CAM table. If an entry does exist, it will then examine the destination MAC address to see if it has an entry for it. If it has an entry it will forward (switch) the frame out through the interface through which Host B can be reached (This would be the uplink port to Sw2 in this case). If no entry exists, it will flood the frame out of all ports which are in the same VLAN as Host A, except the port the frame arrived on.
SW2 will receive this frame and it will check its own CAM table. If it no entry exists for Host A's MAC address, an entry will be added. If an entry does exist, switch be will then check the destination MAC address.
If it has an entry for Host B, it will forward (switch) the frame out of the port through which Host B can be reached. If no entry exists, it will flood the frame out of all ports which are assigned to the same VLAN as Host A. Sw3 will receive this frame.
It will check its CAM table to see if it has an Entry for Host A. If not it will add one. If it has it will check the CAM table for an entry for the MAC address of Host B. If it has one, it will forward (switch) the frame out the port through which Host B can be reached. If no entry is found then Sw2 will Flood the Frame out of all ports which are assigned to the same VLAN as Host A.
Once Host B responds to the initial frame,
Host A will have the MAC of Host B
Sw1 will know that to get to Host B it sends frames out through the port through which it connects to SW2. To get to Host A it sends the frames out through the port to which Host A is connected.
Sw2 will know that to get to Host A it sends frames out through the port to which it connects to SW1. To get to Host B, it sends frames out through the port through which it connects to SW3.
SW3 will know that to get to Host A, it sends frames out through the port through which it connects to SW2. To get to Host B it sends frames out through the port to which Host B is connected.
At all times in this scenario, when Host A sends traffic to Host B, the Frame will have the source MAC of Host A and the destination MAC of Host B. Like wise when Host B sends data to Host A, the frames will have the source MAC of Host B and the destination MAC of Host A.
What you want to understand is how a switch builds its MAC address (CAM) table.
It checks the source MAC first, If an entry exists, then it checks the destination MAC. If no entry exists, then the switch creates and entry and then checks the destination MAC address. If an entry exists the frame will be switched to the relevant port. If no entry exists, then the frame is flooded out of all ports (in the same VLAN as the frame of the originating host) except the port the frame arrived on.
    Best Regards,
    Michael
