What component do I need to play back .vob files?

A client just handed me a DVD with .vob files. I have streamclip on my machine but a prompt came up saying I need more. What do I do?
Best.
Tom

You need to download the Apple MPEG-2 Playback component and install it using MPEG Streamclip. The instructions are on the Streamclip web page or here

    Quicktime should be able to natively handle .mov files. Make sure you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on your computer. If that doesn't work, try an alternative media player like VLC, which can play just about any type of media file.

  • Why doesn't QuickTime 7 or QT-PRO or the MPEG 2 Plug-In play DVD\VOB files?

    I can’t tell you how ripped off I feel. Please explain why you don't come out and say “QuickTime 7, The latest, greatest, best thing since sliced bread, doesn’t play DVD\VOB files. Neither does the $32 QuickTime-Pro nor the $23 MPEG 2 Plug-In. Why did I have to pay $55 dollar to find this out? The ads are deceptive. Maybe it’s by accident, once you know it doesn't play commercially-produced DVD movies and you re-read the ads you notice that they never come out and say it will play commercial DVDs either. The only place it actually comes out and says it does not play commercial DVD Movies is in the last sentence of the help file that says you need to purchase the plug in to play VOB movies......
    Here are the links:
    QuickTime page:
    Never actually says you will be able to view this type of store bought DVD but it shows pictures of them(king Kong).
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/win.html
    QuickTime PRO Page:
    This is the really deceptive page, it shows a scene from Kong Kong and the "recording tool bar" over it as well as out and out deception like where is says "Even those who simply like to watch movies or movie trailers in full screen and save their favorite movies for viewing later will enjoy using QuickTime 7 Pro."
    it also has a right info bar titled
    "Don’t Steal Movies”
    followed by
    “If you see something you want to watch again and again, QuickTime 7 Pro lets you quickly save your favorite content to your hard disk.
    (Picture of menu showing “Save as QuickTime Movie”)
    “Professional studios around the world spend millions of dollars and man-hours producing commercial entertainment. Please don’t steal their work or in ten years, it will cost $50(2) to see
    a movie in the theater."
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/win.html
    Finally the truth, "Using the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component with VOB files" support file page:.
    The first paragraph says this:
    "If you have the optional QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component"(a Link to the store) "installed with QuickTime 6 or later, you can play back video in Video Object (VOB files), which are used in the DVD-Video specification and contain the mutiplexed audio and MPEG-2 video data."
    Then in the very last sentence on the page it says "Please note that the component will not play back encrypted VOB files, such as those found on commercially-produced DVDs, in QuickTime Player."

    Mr. Napoli, I fully understand that it is illegal to circumvent the anti-coping protection however, it is my Understanding via "Fair use and Practices" provisions in the US copyright laws that I can make a copy of my DVD for personal use. If this was truly illegal then Apple's MAC app "HandBrake" is illegal. So lets not pretend the functionality to move/copy commercial DVD content to your IPOD for viewing is outside of Apple's realm, it’s not. As far as being “clearly stated” the information would have to be presented on the same page as the offer to purchase in order to be “clearly stated”. Apple puts the info in a “support” FAQ you would only read after you realize the software doesn’t do what you expected. The application support guys at my local store told me today that “everyone thinks that QuickTime will let you watch commercial DVDs” Apple need to offe3r a “FREE” update enabling this functionality.

  • DVD Player do not play DVD[VOB] files when on a network storage

    Hi, since installing ML [10.8] [clean install] DVD Player return an error "The media type is not supported" msg when I try to play a movie stored on a readynas NV+ network storage. The RN is accessible in finder and all movies are there, there is no username & password required to access the storage which is on public. DVDplayer is set to accept incoming files through the firewall. The file was playing normally before when the mac was on Lion [10.7] with same configuration. If I copy the file to the computer HDD, no problem. I am computer literate but not an expert. Any tip is welcome, thank you.

    I have exactly the same issue on my mid 2011 MacMini which I recently upgraded to ML. I have connected an external DVD drive to check whether the country code had to be changed to overcome it. The Apple DVD-Player played the DVD fine, I noticed from the "DVD information" menu that the country code had it fact changed (4 changes left). However the next time I tried to play a file from my NAS (External HDD connected to TC) the Apple DVD-Player showed the same error message "The media type is not supported". My network setting are unchanged vs. before when I was able to play such VOB files from the NAS, my end 2006 iMac running on Lion does also play those files. What's wrong here?

  • HT3775 What codec do I need to play video that is called .avi.  It will not play on my new Macbook Pro.

    What codec do I need to add to play a video that is called .avi
    It will not play on my new Macbook Pro since I put it into the movies section of my launchpad.  When it was on the desktop It worked fine.  I moved it back to the desktop and it still does not work.
    The error message says  The document "   .avi" could not be opened.
    A required codec is not available.

    Download VLC Media Player which plays anything you throw at it and  Perian (AVI and FLV support).

  • HT204382 what software do i need to play movies on avi file . have connected a external memory disk and all the movies are in avi format.

    What software do i need to install in order to be able
    to play movies in .avi format.
    have connected an external memory and all the entertainment
    files are in .avi format.
    Ansver i get : does not support

    VLC is a good choice. While I don't know if it will play your files, Perian is a helper app for Quicktime which allows you to play a lot of things in the Quicktime Player.
    There is also Flip4Mac which allows you to play windows media files in Quicktime.
    Finally, note that the extension on a video file doesn't really tell you what you need to play it. The .avi, .mpg, etc. is only the wrapper around the actual video. The video is encoded by some means and needs to be decoded. The video inside the .avi can be encoded in one of many different schemes.
    VLC, Perian, Flip4Mac, and many others, are all able to decode various flavors of encoding. Having all of those in your toolbox will help to allow you to play most of the things you'll find.

  • Slow playing back swf files

    Hello,
    I am running OSX 10.4 11 server and have an internal web site I am running. It's on a G4 Xserve with 4GB of RAM. Not that many people access the internal site so I don't think it's the load, but I guess you never know.
    anyhow, I created this swf file about 400k and they are very slow opening and playing back.
    any clues on what it may be or what I can check?
    Thanks,

    The way your doing it now can get really confusing over time.
    save  a reffrence in an object or an array that would indecate to you if it  was loaded allready or not for example the full switch you have up there  could of been this instead:
    1. give your clips there URL so you don't need to ask for it again if your working with movielclips for your buttons or if you created a class for them just give it a public var such as 'actionURL'
    so for example
    btn1.actionURL = 'link1';
    btn10.actionURL= 'link10';
    now that everything knows what it loads all is left is for you to now follow after things
    1. when the buton is clicked you can ask itself what is the url e.target.actionURL
    2. you can then have a flag (boolean value such as isInTransition) that lets you know if there is an animation going on
      2.1 there is no animation so lets load it up
      2.2. ther is an animation so lets save the data and wait for the animation to complete before we start the load
    and thats about it
    if you want to save a reffrence to if the clip was loaded or not you can save your result in many ways one of them could be an object/array that holds everything that was loaded already
    var oLoaded:Object= {};
    onLoadNewItem(e:Event):void{
       if(!oLoaded[e.target.actionURL]){ i was never loaded before
           oLoaded[e.target.actionURL] = new Loader(....
       }else{
           oLoaded[e.target.actionURL] //here is my loader do with it what ever you want to do
    hope this hit the nail on the head

    Hi!
    Flash videos (ie .FLV files) are supported by your phone. It comes with adobe flash lite 3.0 which is based on Adobe Flash 8. Btw, are you playing the video from a the web such as youtube or you have the file stored to your phone?
    Hope this will help.

  • Need Help playing a wav file on PDA

    Does anyone have a SIMPLE example of playing a wav file on a PDA using LabView PDA. The only working example I can find from NI "Advance Sound Example for LabVIEW PDA for Pocket PC" is a jumbled of confusing functionality. I'm mainly looking for a simple "play" example, but a simple "record" example would be helpful also.
    Thanks - Bruce

    Hello,
    Well, I looked through the example code I tried to break it down to the point where you could create a simple Play VI. Unfortunately, I don't have the PDA target, so I'm uncertain if the little example that I have attached will run or not. If not, I also took a screen shot so you can see what VIs I used. I'm pretty sure I only used VI's that I found on the example itself.
    Good luck.

  • How to play VIDEO_TS.VOB files?

    I have a tv show that I would like to watch on my MacBook Air. I inserted the DVD in my external dvd drive and an image of a cd showed up on my desktop. I opened it and it had two folders (AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS). The AUDIO_TS folder is empty but the VIDEO_TS folder has .BUP, .IFO , and .VOB files. I bought the show online and I checked their FAQs and it says that all their DVDs are Region Free and will work in any country and can be played on any computer and dvd player. It works fine on my blu ray player but I want to watch it on my MBA, how do I do that?

    Never mind. Got it played on the built in DVD Player app.
