What "Components" of After Effects require QuickTime?

I get the message "quicktime is not installed on this system some components will not work correctly" whenever I startup After Effects.  It is true that I do not have QuickTime installed on this system, but I do have several questions.  (This isn't any type of error, I just want to know what QuickTime does):
What "Components" of After Effects require QuickTime?
What version of QuickTime do you recommend that I should install for the best performance?  I've heard that there are a bunch of different kinds and I don't know what Adobe After Effects uses specifically.

After Effects uses QuickTime for importing and exporting several kinds of QuickTime movies (.mov files).
Install the most recent version of QuickTime 7.

  • After Effects error: Quicktime export failed - Out of memory (-108)

I am using CS3 After Effects and have been receiving this After Effects error: Quicktime export failed - Out of memory (-108).  Can anyone help with this issue?
I am using a Mac Pro 6-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz with 6 memory slots at 1GB DDR3 ECC at Speed 1333MHz.

Sounds like one of those many "old version of AE on new hardware" issues... You may need to fiddle with Rosetta or install it in teh first place, if you haven't already and you may also require a specific older version of Quicktime...

  • Does adobe after effects require OpenGL?

Hello, I'm purchasing a new laptop, and I'm trying to find one with a graphics card that has openGL, but I'm having a hard time doing so, but, does adobe after effects require openGL? and if so, could anyone recommend a laptop in the $400-$600 range?

    > Open GL is not mendatory but for one effect which is the cartoon
effect. And i think that pixel bender plugins needs open gl too, but
    i'm not dead certain.
No, OpenGL is not required for Pixel Bender plug-ins or for the Cartoon effect (which is written using the same underlying technology as Pixel Bender plug-ins). The Cartoon effect is certainly much faster when you have a graphics card; if you just run it on the CPU, it's quite slow.
In all cases, things that can run on the GPU (the chip on the graphics card that OpenGL is making use of) can also fall back to running on the CPU.
Personally---as Sebastien suggested---the Cartoon effect is the only thing other than interactive previews that makes me glad to have an OpenGL-capable GPU.

  • After Effects CC: Quicktime is not installed on this system

Trying to find a solution for this weird message "Quicktime is not installed on this system" when starting After Effects CC on OSX 10.9.3 for days now, but nothing worked out so far. Read lots of threads to this topic and followed all the different kinds of instructions (like changing the firewall settings, deleting files from the preferences folder, reinstalling quicktime7, changing the default audio devices, deleting certain components, ...), but it seems hopeless. For some reason also Media Encoder CC doesn t start. Media Encoder CS6 works just perfect, like After Effects CS6 does too. Unfortunately I do need to use the mask tracker which forces me to work with CC.
Please help! What else can I do? Need to get After Effects going very urgently.
I m working on a MacBook Air 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM.
Thanks a lot for any reply!!! Aloha!

Troubleshooting QuickTime errors with After Effects

  • After Effects and Quicktime - a love hate relationship

Since Apple released QT 7.4 in January and every forum was bogged with users posting their AE error messages, I've been very weary of Quicktime vsoftware.
I'm a apple user at home and avoided updating to Quicktime 7.4, but recently realized that at work my computer was running Quicktime 7.4 with AE CS3. I occasionally get the error (-54) but not on a regular basis it seems to be completely arbitrary.
I've been searching the forums trying to discover what (if any) is the best QT version to be running for a studio that works mainly in After Effects?

    > Since Apple released QT 7.4 in January and every forum was bogged with users posting their AE error messages, I've been very weary of Quicktime vsoftware. <
I'm just weary of getting up on weekdays.
I'm not hearing anything that comes close to "bogging" down any forums about Quicktime but I understand your decision to be wary of Apple's inability to get it right the first time.
All of the Macs in our shop are required to run Software Update regularly so the jihadists can't launch malware form Safari. We all run Mac OS10.4.11 and are running QT7.5.5 with CS3

  • After effects cs5 - quicktime h264 very large file size

    hi,
I'm wondering if anybody can recommend a good quicktime codec for very small file sizes, for preview renders.
current project - my wmv renders are coming out around 10mb and reasonable quality which is excellent.
some of my clients don't have flip for mac so I need to render them a quicktime.
the quicktime h264 are coming out a lot bigger than expected. same timeline, pixel dimensions and frame rate = around 150mb and similar quality.
I thought in the past my h264 QT renders had been maybe double the file size of my wmv renders, not 15 x bigger.
am I missing something really obvious?
    pixel size = 1000 x 250,
    frame rate = 30fps,
    timeline = 4m 30s
    h264 quality = 50%
    audio = aac stero
using after effects cs5, win7 pro
    thanks in advance
    s

the size of the file is directly related to the bitrate at which you encode, not frame size or fps. So, if you want a 10s clip to be 15 MB (not including sound), divide 15 MB to 10s and you get 1.5MBps bitrate, or 12Mbps. You might get better quality if you encode 2-pass VBR with max bitrate set to what you computed previously.
Anyway, it's usually better to render your comp to some losless format (QT none, or TGA sequence, etc) then compress your clip with Media Encoder. This way you can play with the settings for H.264 until you get an acceptable result, without having to render from AE every time.

  • After Effects Mavericks QuickTime not available

    Hello.
I have the following problem. I have OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks. I use After Effects CC. I want to render a video as MOV (QuickTime). I go to the Render Queue -> Output Mode -> format not the opportunity to select MOV. It just is not there. QuickTime is installed on Mavericks as default all codecs would be theoretically available. What am I doing wrong?
When I try to render the video in Media Encoder CC I have the opportunity to select MOV (QuickTime). When I render it I get an unknown error.
    THANKS

    Hey Szalam
I use the following version of After Effects CC (12.2). I have solved the problem. I uninstalled After Effects CC and installed it again. Now I have the missing format (MOV). My After Effects has always been on the most current version. Why a new installation has helped I can not understand. But it works now and I'm happy
    Thanks

  • Adobe After Effects CS5 & Quicktime ERRORS / crashing...

    Greetings,
I am having a lot of AE CS5 crashing (app just quits for no reason while scrubbing) and other weirdness...like today, and I am being told on the Adobe Boards that it 's Quicktime related. I am rendering a 3 minute piece in ProRes 4:2:2 (1280x720p) to my RAID (no special plug-ins or anything) and I get the following error at the very end of every render:
+After Effects Error: Rendering error while writing to file (insert my RAID path here). An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted (-1610153464)+
They are telling me the long number at the end indicates a Quicktime problem, which is unfortunately not so rare with 64bit AE due to how Apple does not really have a 64bit Quicktime and Adobe needs to work their way around some of that.
Is this true? Can I fix this on my own or is there a 64-Bit QT Pro coming with the new Final Cut Studio? Any input is gratefully appreciated...thanks.
    Joey

  • After Effects CC Quicktime is not installed?

I've tired everything I can, even tried installing Twixtor plug ins not luck so far.... Can any one help?
I am using After Effects on a 2011 iMac, running a fully updated Maverick OS and Quicktime.
I 've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, nothing so far.

I read that this could be a permissions issue so I repaired permissions and that didn't help. I also read that it could be related to Blue Stacks but I removed that a while ago (found it useless). I ran a removal application again just in case but that didn't help either.
I am really stuck now.... I posted a similar thread here..... still waiting to hear from an "Adobe Expert". Nothing so far.

  • After Effects PC Quicktime Audio Sync

I'm putting this here for fellow PC-users who are experiencing this major frustration.
When RAM previewing, your audio is in sync.  But after rendering, when you play back a rendered Quicktime movie in Quicktime player - no matter WHICH codec you render to - the audio is out of sync.  If you try playing it in a browser (Quicktime plugin), it is also out of sync.
Fear not, PC users: your movie audio is not out of sync.  Quicktime playback via either standalone or browser plug-in is not playing the file properly.  You can test this a couple of ways: 1) Try playing it with VLC on your PC: magically, it's in sync.  2) Open your rendered movie on any Mac, or via a browser on any Mac: magically, it's in sync.
The Quicktime platform and its various implementations continue to set the lowest standard, given the enormity of the resources at Apple, and its prevalence in production.  As a VFX and multimedia content creator for 20+ years, I wince every time a client asks for ProRes, lossy files, as "masters."  Between the inconsistent gamma-shift issues and local playback sync, I avoid using Quicktime wherever possible.
    Hope this helps,
    _Mike

Well, first off, my personal preference whenever any media comes to me is to immediately split the audio and video, and convert to .wav and image sequences.  With any .mov or .avi or .mp4-type container, one small corruption and the entire file is lost.  For safety's sake, image sequences are infintiely safer.  They're also easier during the production phase, where changes from a client can mean simple patching of just the relevant frames.  On tight deadlines, knowing that the entire output comp is ready to go at a moment's notice is often a lifesaver, and this allows me to make changes and re-output approval masters very quickly.  Time is money.
My preferred image sequence codec is OpenEXR, but I'll use TIFF, or even PNG, depending.  Ultimately, I deliver client masters as uncompressed TIFFs with .wav and/or .aiff audio. For as long as I've been in post-production, these formats have been around and withstood the test of time.  Usually, clients will want some sort of Quicktime with the master files, in which case it's Animation (lossless) codec with embedded audio.  But I can't sleep at night knowing how easily corruptible that is as a master, so I provide it in addition to the image sequences and audio files.
During production, I'll render to whatever the client wants to see/whatever's easiest, and I have plenty of Macs and PCs around here, though my primary workstation is PC.  Locally, I render my disposable tests to After Effects' default: lossless .avi.  I posted the original information about working with Quicktime above because I see this error 1000x a week, as many of my clients like to see .h264 media, and about 1% of them ever seem to notice the [obvious!] gamma issues or sync problems.  These are the world's biggest media corporations spending millions, and they rarely seem to notice or care.  Miss a word in the legal disclaimer, though, and they can see that in 6-point type from across the room...  priorities.

  • After Effects says Quicktime Not installed

    My computer setup:
    Macbook Pro Retina i7
    16gb RAM
    OSX 10.9.4
So, I've gone through all of the various ideas on this page and the pages it links to and the pages those pages link to as well! But no luck... After Effects CC 12.2.1 works fine, the dynamic link manager and the QTServer32 both run and everything is great. If I try to open After Effects CC 13.0.2 it hangs on initializing the media core, and then after a few minutes finally opens, but gives me the warning that Quicktime is Not installed and obviously I can't do anything useful with After Effects. Acitivity monitor shows that dynamic link manager and QTServer32 are not running. I turned off my firewall, and I've gone through all of the various solutions (removing import/export codecs, fixing permissions, etc.) carefully and throughly. Last night I reinstalled AE 13.0.2 after using the Adobe uninstaller with "remove preferences" checked. But this morning, same problem. Any ideas? It seems like a common problem with a myriad of solutions but none of them seem to fix my problem...

You say that you "fixed permissions", but are you absolutely certain that you made the entire Adobe preferences folder and all of its contents readable and writable? Mac OS setting items in that folder to read-only is by far the most common cause of the problems that you describe.

  • What versions of After Effects can open project files from which versions?

Since this question comes up a lot, I just created this article that gives the details for all of the versions going back to After Effects 7.0:
"opening After Effects projects from previous versions and saving back to previous versions"

Please look at the Oracle Text reference manual for a list. Ultra Search uses the INSO filters of the underlying Text engine.

  • What can cause After Effects project files (.aep) to be large?

Some of my AE project files are over 100mb and I can't figure out why. Other projects that were created in a similar fashion are just a few KB or about 5MB and smaller. Any ideas what I could have done differently for the .aep file to be so large?

  • After Effects error: Can't import file "(FILE TITTLE)" unsupported filetype or extension

Hello so I was working with AE3 for 2 years and i had no problems with it but.. when i reinstall my windows and install AE3 with same installation file as always i was using.. and  I got problem. When i try to import AVI or wmv or other video clips except mov format I getting this error "After Effects error: Can't import file "(FILE TITTLE)" unsupported filetype or extension".. i tried everything: 3 different installs of AE3 but nothing always same.. so decided this is windows problem so I installed new one  with SP3 but i got same problem then I tried it on SP2 but still same problem.. So i installed windows7 and my AE3 was working but i didn't liked a windows 7 and i back on xp SP3 and guess what guys? yes! i got same error again on AE3. I don't know guys what to do. Can you help me?

I assume that you mean "After Effects CS3". After Effects 3 came out more than a decade ago.
Do you have QuickTime Player installed? After Effects requires QuickTime to be installed to import some file types.
Could you be explicit about exaclty what files you have tried to import? Even giving file names might help. For example, this error has been seen when the characters used in the file name were non-standard characters (e.g., this thread).
When you re-installed Windows, did you also re-install any codecs that you may have previously had on the system?
