What compression settings to use from finalcut4.5HD to quicktime to toast?

I've been looking thru the forums and there are a lot of questions pertaining to this issue but I'm still having issues so here goes again...:)
I'm trying to burn quicktime movie files that I created in Final Cut 4.5HD onto a data dvd. When the files are created and played from the computer, they play fine. But when I burn them onto a DVD, a few of them are really jerky in motion and sometimes the video stops while the audio keeps going. I've been reading on Apple's forum that it may have to do with the compression or the data rate at which the file is created from FinalCut. Any suggestions on what export settings to use out of Final Cut?
I tried using - File - Export - Quicktime Movie (setting: current settings...include: audio & video...make movie self-contained)...created a .mov file but it was large and jerky on the data dvd when burned...
I also tried using the - File - Export - Quicktime Conversion option as well with different variations of the settings...(i.e. quicktime movie/mpeg-2/mpeg-4 with different compression types (dv/dvcpro-ntsc/none/video/mpeg-4/animation), key frames, compressor quality, etc)...The only thing I wasn't sure about was the data rate (i.e. automatic or restrict to?....and if I use the 'restrict to' what's a good amount?).......i
I have played around w/ these settings and still get jerky motion when played on a data dvd...the only ones that played correctly were the ones created thru the mpeg-2 format setting but these were .m2v files and are separated from the audio .aiff files...(the person getting the file needs the format in .mov format)...
My purpose for these particular exports are to create relatively small but good quality quicktime files that someone else can take and post on the web
I would also like to know what settings I should use if I wanted to 'backup' files for archival purposes in case I needed to go back and use the footage for editing purposes (in this case, file size the normal 720x480).
I'm using quicktime player 7.04 basic (not pro)
I'm using Toast 7 to burn the files. Just been dragging the files onto the Data Tab - Mac & PC format.
Thanks in advance!

Just use the movie project file in Toast, it is DV and Toast will transcode it to MPEG-2 when authoring the DVD. DOn't encode to a lossy format before Toast as Toast makes MPEG-2 which is lossy enough already without two compression cycles.
You also don't use Toast to just burn a data disc as playback of a very high bitrate QT file might be more than the DVD can deliver.
Use the Toast video tab, DVD video button and add the movie project to the drop area or select from the media browser. Read the Toast manual as well.
For backup - export the project to a fresh DV tape or store the raw DV files on a external hard disk - do not compress it to some QT format and expect it to be "archival" footage to re-edit later - it will look terrible ( and while some people think encoding it to H264 is a way around this - it isn't and takes a ton of time to encode to H264 anyway).
$5 DV tapes are the best backup in addition to a 2nd hard disk.

  • How to know what compression format is used for images in pdf file? (jpeg2000 issue with iPad)

I have a pdf file whose images are compressed in jpeg2000 format which the iPad doesn't support. I used Acrobat to save the pdf file using the zip compression for the images and another time using the jpg compression. I set this in the PDF Optimizer screen. The images in the pdf do not show up in the iPad.
I am not sure if I am doing something wrong. How do I know what compression was used for the images in a pdf file?

My work around for now is "Make Compatible with…’ from Acrobat 4.0 " which does not support JPEG2000 compression.

  • What PDF settings are used when creating DPS articles?

When you create a PDF file using Acrobat Distiller or InDesign you can modify settings such as font subsets, image down-sampling and compression which will have an impact on the final file size. Does anyone know what settings are used when articles are rendered in PDF format in DPS and can the settings be modified? Specifically, what type of compression is applied to images? If I were to place two images on a page, a png and a jpg with medium quality, would they be embedded in the PDF as is or re-compressed in another format and/or level of quality?

    Thanks for your help.
So images placed in an InDesign retain their original file format and are unzipped when the article is loaded in the app.
I'm assuming that if compression is applied to the original image files it can have an impact on performance. If you were to use jpeg files in a document they would need to be unzipped and decompressed. I've read other forum posts that suggest the iOS jpeg decompression engine is too slow to present a fluid user experience in a DPS app. The combined processing time of unzipping and decompressing jpegs files may steer me towards the png format.

  • What Video Settings to use in Premiere before adding to Presenter

I am editing several videos in Adobe Premiere and will then add them to a presentation with Adobe Presenter.  What video settings do you suggest (frame size, codec, container, frame rate, etc.) for use with Presenter.
    thanks!

good call, turns out it's not exporting at 500x375 like I tell it to. Instead, it exports to 640x480. The .fla document size is 500x375... yet when I go to quicktime export settings, it says 550x400. And when it finishes export, it's 640x480. huh??
well, I guess I can make my premiere project 640x480, not going to matter much when the final product is 320x240. I just can't figure out why it insists on exporting to 640x480

  • Ihave a virgin super hub and would like to know what firewall settings to use?

I have a Virgin Media Super hub and would like to know what firewall settings to put it on, low, medium or high or whether it makes any difference? I am trying to make my network and Mac as secure as possible and need help, i've always had PCs.

The Mac operating system has very good firewall built-in to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> File Sharing.
That said, if your hub has 802.11g or higher WiFi, be sure to use WPA2 security, and see if there are settings to prevent ping attacks.
If your hub is only ethernet, find out what settings to ues to prevent ping attacks.
802.11b WiFi is fairly insecure, and you are better to use ethernet instead, if that's all it provides.

  • What Project Settings to Use?

    Hi,
I am very new to this program and would like to put together a movie using video clips taken from my iPhone. When complete, it will need to be saved as an FLV for web viewing. What settings should I use when I create a new project in PrE12? Also, I want to insert slides in between clips. If I create them in PhotoShop or Illustrator, what dimensions should they be if I want them to be the same dimensions as the video clips? Thanks for any help!

    HapJax
Premiere Elements 12, like version 11, takes over setting the project preset (project settings) based on the properties of first drag to the Expert workspace Timeline. If that project preset set by the program matches the properties of your source file, then you should have no colored line over the the Timeline content (as the first drag to that Timeline).
Sometimes the program does that OK, sometimes not. If not, then you set the project preset manually yourself based on the file properties that you know before importing media into the project. When the program does not do it right, it does not give you the closest to what it should be but rather its default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 or its PAL counterpart.
Now here is the bottom line here...if you let the program set the project preset for you and you get an orange line over its content, you do not render the Timeline to get the best possible preview. You set the project preset manually according to the properties of the source media and then move on as indicated above.
Once you start editing your video (working in a project set with the correct project setting), you will get an orange line over the edited content - program telling you that you need to render the content to get the best possible preview. The time for "rendering" for preview purposes according to the color indicator system is after edits, not after the first drag to the timeline.
That is my take on the situation.
If clarification on anything that I have written, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thanks.

  • What compression type to use when exporting?

I need to export a Final Cut Pro Movie File to a QuickTime Movie file. There are so many copression types to choose from. Which should I use so that people with both Mac and PC could open the file? Some friends have complained that they can´t open files that I´ve exported using H.264 which is the default I get in QuickTime.
    thanks in advance

Backward compatibility has always been a QuickTime strong suit. Files made in version 3 still open just fine in version 7.
But H.264 (and the preset export options) make this a bit more confusing.
MPEG-4 Video codec will open in version 6, or higher and, since version 6 has been available since 2002, it is a very good chance your viewers have version 6 to view it.
Older machines that can't be upgraded to version 7 or viewers that still haven't upgrade their version of QuickTime beyond version 4 (Win 95) would like to view Sorenson 3 Video codec.
Don't bother with any conversion to AVI as the QuickTime export options (Cinepak) haven't been used since Win 3.
If you have a lot of videos to share or are making files to be used in a Web page you'll probably get the best results by choosing:
Export > Movie to QuickTime Movie
and choosing MPEG-4 Video codec. These .mov files work just fine on the Web and also in other players (iPods, etc.) as long as you don't exceed the specs for iPod.

  • What settings to use when exporting HD into QuickTime Movie

This help call goes out to any Mac user with Final Cut. I need help!!!
I have a Mac G5 and use Final Cut Pro V. 5.1.4. I Just bought a Canon XH A1 and filmed a few test shoots. Then downloaded to FC Pro. I have been trying to export using QuickTime Conversion. Every setting I have tried comes out more or less square. HELP!!!!
    My Settings:
In Easy Setup - HDV - 1080i60 FireWire Basic
    Under Sequence the setting is:
    Frame Size - HD (1440X1080) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio - HD 1440X1080
No check mark in Anamorphic 16:9
    Field Dominance- Lower
    Editing Timebase - 29.97
    QuickTime Video Settings:
    Compression - Motion JPEG B
Under Export - using QuickTime Conversion - QuickTime Movie - Options - Video Settings:
    I tied:
    HDV 1080i60 and 50
    Motion JPEG A and B
    DVCPRO HD 1080i60
    All settings come out squarish!!!

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the info. But I can not get any setting to come out looking widescreen. All settings come out square looking. I have tried every setting I can think of but all the QuickTime exported movies come looking like (i.e.: 800X854) more box than widescreen. I think it must be some setting I do not know about or some combination or possibly the capture setting (easy setup).
    Thanks for your help.

  • 158 minute movie. What compression preset to use?

My movie is over the 150 limit for preset on compressor. I kept on using the 150 minute setting. Bu tis there a better way?
    KT

No, that is not what I asked.
If the 150 minute preset works for you, say hooray and go home happy.
If you do not have enough space on the disk after compressing the video material using the 150 minute preset with ac3 audio, then you need to create a custom preset with a lower bitrate and give it another go.
The lower the bitrate, the less likely the material is going to look good.
On the other hand, who wants to sit through a 2 1/2 hour home made movie anyway. Try trimming it back to something like - oh 90 minutes and your audience and the DVD authoring program will thank you.

  • What scan settings to use when creating multipage pdf for best opening speed.

Example: A four page text pdf created directly from my Epson Perfection V500 photo scanner is 193 kb.  It opens quickly and perfectly on my iMac.  Opening it on my iPad in iBooks, it takes awhile, and when I turn pages, there's a blank page at first, and then it slowly fills in.
Now,  much larger pdf's that I create in Photoshop and InDesign open quickly and perfectly in iBook on my iPad.  What gives?  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Tom

Hi!  The previous answer is right on, just wanted to add that the reason that larger PDFs from Photoshop or InDesign might open faster is that they are likely text-based.  If your particular project allows for it, you could use the OCR features of Acrobat to extract the text from a scanned page, which would ultimately result in a smaller PDF, which would open faster on your device.  See this page for some more information on this process: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/convert-jpeg-scan-ocr-to-pdf.html  Hope this helps!

  • In Acrobat 6 and 7 Professional, what compression methodology is used with the "Reduce File Size"?

    For example, bicubic downsampling to 72 pixels/in.?, to 150 pixels/in.?, to 300 pixels/in.?,
Are all embedded thumbnails also removed?
    Are all layers also flattened?

My work around for now is "Make Compatible with…’ from Acrobat 4.0 " which does not support JPEG2000 compression.

  • What DNS settings to use in server setup with a time capsule

I have a mac mini and am to install leopard server on it for our office.
i think the standard install is for me...small business needing filesharing and vpn access only. We have outsourced exchange which i'm probably going to keep, and also an outsourced web server.
I had a trial run at install and came across some problems (clients couldn't use vpn or ichat) so thought I better check my assumptions with you experts!
i presume DHCP will be run by the time capsule, and 5 or 6 macbooks will share the broadband connection. Got to the 'Network address pane' and it had an IP and subnet assigned by the time capsule (10.0.2.2, 255.255.255.0).
I clicked next and got the 'network names' pane...maybe this is where i went wrong...I set primary DNS name as macserver.[mycompany].com and the computer name as Mac Server.
I went through the rest of the set up...added some users and file sharing is all work fine. Client machines auto set up via directory utility
    PROBLEMS:
iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
    VPN says internet connection problem
i can access internet from clients and server machine; can file share no problem.
There is something obvious that I am missing...

iChat says it cannot connect due to mac server ...something to do with ssl
It would help if you quoted the actual error message, rather than some vague reference.
The chances are it's complaining about the SSL certificate that the server is using - it probably doesn't match the server name. There are many reasons for this, but the upshot is that you need an SSL certificate that is valid for the hostname that users use to connect to the server with.
So if you're using 'ichat.mycompany.com' as your iChat server name, you will need a SSL certificate for 'ichat.mycompany.com'. Or you'll need to turn off SSL.
You can manage SSL certificates via Server Admin.
    VPN says internet connection problem
I assume this is remote clients trying to connect to the server, right?
Have you setup all the port forwarding rules in the router to allow incoming VPN connections to get routed to the server?

  • What compression type to use for disk image files

    Hello all
I was wondering if a more experienced user than me could give a recommendation as to which compression format I should use to compress an image I made of my / partition. I used dd to make the image file.
For me, (de)compression time is more important than compression ratio (size), but I'm of course looking for a good blend of both
    Thanks for any advice

If you have a multicore processor, use pigz instead of gzip etc. Start with this app and only after you're not happy with it, look for one that's faster / compresses better.
BTW, do you have a lot of incompressible data in there? Movies, pics, music and already compressed files won't compress any more.

  • My browser does not remember history no matter what privacy settings I use. What's wrong?

    Windows XP

    Hi!
Have you checked this article? [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
If so, can you be a little bit more specific? What does happen when you have "Remember history" activated? When is the information deleted, etc. Is it after closing Firefox? After restarting your computer? Is it your personal computer or is it a work computer? Are you the administrator of the computer? The more information you give us the easier will be for us to give yo a precise answer.
