What computer would be best for me?

I am currently 13 years old, and ready to buy a new computer. But would a laptop be better for me? or a Desktop Computer?
I already have a laptop, but I will be replacing it with a new computer.
I don't think I should worry much about portability.
Price is very important, as my parents cannot afford a computer that is higher than $2000.
I do casually play online games, but will be mainly using it for surfing the web and doing homehork.
I would like to have a good size of memory and storage without having to pay a lot for it.
But the most important thing is to have a computer that will last for a couple of years without having to replace it.
And, if a laptop is better for me, should I get a Macbook Air or Pro?
Or, if a desktop computer is better, should I get an iMac or Mac Mini?
Thanks!

Hi and Welcome!
I concur with Allan. Go for an iMac. Go for the 21 inch screen models. I would go for either model, but you have to order either with the complete 16 GBs of RAM as you can add RAM at all, in the future, EVER!
If you can, for speed, get it with the 1 TB fusion drive option, also.
Good Luck and have fun!

  • What amplifier would work best for Airport Express?

I have built in a ceiling speakers in all my rooms and all the rooms have their own apple macmini or laptop
All wiring of the speakers come to a central media room, and in this, I want to place 8 airport express to allow each room to be able to play through itunes onto their ceiling speaker. Effectively we could also put all speakers on from one room and create a party mode
The problem is that airport express requires powered speakers and these ceiling speakers are not powered of course. This means I would need to put an amplifier between the airport express and the speaker (I think)
Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this?
I have had a look at multi zone amplifier like
    http://www.htd.com/whole-house-audio/mid-level-whole-house-audio/MCA-66-Audio-Co ntroller-Amplifier
Most multi zone amplifiers have their own keypad, but with apple you do not require this as you can control it straight from your mac! So what I want to do is control the INPUT level on the amplifier, and fix the output level on the amplifier, if I am thinking right..... as I thought this would work best ...
then if you put the volume control on the mac to MAX the amplifier would already be preset to max and the ceiling speakers would rock
    Any suggestions or .....
    Thanks

In this Macworld article, they just use multiple Parasound Zamps, which are single zone amps that turn on and off by themselves, depending on when sound is passing through. I'm planning on doing this with my new construction because it looks like a simple setup with no remotes needed save the iPhone, which I always have on me.

  • [Solved]What WM would be best for a dedicated console emulator box?

    Hey all
So, using a recycled, slightly old small-form-factor computer, I am making a dedicated emulation box. It will run game console emulators for every game system I can think of. But anyways, that is what I intend to use this box for, and only that. I have been setting it up from an Arch Linux base install, aiming to consume the least resources I can (because it is an older box, and I want the best performance with my emulators). I need a recommendation on a Window manager that therefore:
-Does not have ANY sort of taskbars/titlebars/other stuff in the way.
    -Consumes the least resources possible
Now, the current winner is just a default X11 shell that is seen when xinit is run. However, the shell does not cover the whole screen. I want the screen to be all one colour. Because I want the look of using this box with my friends to make it look put together.
    Any recommendations?

I dunno about dwm, it has some bugs with fullscreen apps - funnily enough emulators seem to give it trouble, ScummVM will not run fullscreen on my install for instance.
I'd vote for Openbox, it has no taskbar or anything by default, windows will be initially themed but you can disable window borders and even the right click menu if you wish.
I was thinking openbox at first, because I use it on my main computer and know it pretty well. Thanks.
I was considering dwm, but thanks for the advisory about the fullscreen bugs.
I'll give evilwm a shot too. And give making the x11 shell bigger a shot too.
Thanks for the recommendations, but I have another quick question:
Is there any way to automatically login to the root account on the TTY without the use of X? This machine, once setup, will be only in my house and not connected to the internet, so the dangers of running as root are virtually 0. I want this because, on boot, I will just have to press power, and then without doing anything (aided by a bit of bash) I will be taken to a menu of sorts to select what console and game I want to play.

  • What router would work best for my app?

    Hi,
I have been looking at two Cisco routers for my home/work network. They are the 1811 and the 871 series.
My network consists of 1 2K3 SBS (It dose my DHCP, Domain Controller, Wins, and active directory.), 2 Cad stations, 1 Email/web PC, 1 Notebook, and I will have 3 people VPN'ing in at any point in time for files.
Also, my broadband connection is cable (8m/768k) as of right now and will soon see FiOS in my area and I am looking at possibly getting the 15m/2m tier or the 30m/5m tier if the price is right. So will aether of these routers handle this wan connection speed?

The 871 peaks at about 12mbps vs. 35mbps for the 1811.
Check out this document to compare all models.
Hope this helps. Please rate this post.
    Thanks,

  • What laptop would be best for gaming? (e.g. skyrim)

Someone please help me with my question please. Also the laptop will be used for education purposes. Lastly, when can i get the laptop at its cheapest.

  • I have a new (mid) 2011 imac and want to transfer my old records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for a new mac that would have compatible software for ripping to itunes?

i have a mid 2011 i5 imac and i want to transfer my vinyl records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for my imac that has compatible software for transfer to itunes

    Hallo,
I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.
    Success, Jean

  • Which Mac Pro would be best for editing?

I'm upgrading my editing system and I was wondering what type of computer would be best. Again, the system is used almost solely for editing film in regular def and high def. I'm wondering what processor speed would be best. Whether I should get a duel core or quad core and why? What are the bells and whistles that are not needed? Price is no obstacle, but I don't want to just buy the best if it isn't necessary.

The amount of RAM is of more influence than the difference between the processor speeds of the Mac Pro models. RAM is not that expensive, so always put as much in as you can, when using software that uses lots of memory. You're even better of using a slower processor with plenty of RAM than using on that is a little faster, but has few RAM.
Then there is the speed of the hard disk memory that will be your next bottleneck, specially when using video or other large files. All Mac Pro 2008 models have 4(!) drivebays you can shove more SATA hd's right in. Then use the disk utility to configure them (2, 3 even 4!) as a RAID set, that is 2, 3 or 4 times as fast! Use the same type and size hd's for a set. Read up on RAID before you decide to use it. I use a striped RAID of 3 hd's and a 4th for a Time Machine backup of the RAID. They all fit nicely in the Mac Pro and hd's are not that expensive either.
BTW Both RAM and HD's are cheaper when you buy them outside the Apple store, I'm sorry to say.

  • What Router Would Be Best If Using Two PlayStation 3 Consoles?

What Router Would Be Best If Using Two PlayStation 3 Consoles That  Are Connected To The Same Broadband Internet Connection? My Two Cousins Aren't Able To Connect To The Same Lobby Party Together As I Am To Play COD MW3. They Have Tried Having Both Consoles Hardwired to the Router But The Same Problem Of Having Only One Of My Two Cousins To Be Able To Connect To The Lobby Party While The Other One Can't Connect.  Thanks For Any Help With This Issue.

My router easily handles 2-4 PS3s at a time during Uncharted multiplayer and its a few years old.  Its a Linksys Wireless N (model no. WRT150N).  Like I said, its not the newest but it handles all our consoles just fine.  My internet speed is 24mbps, maybe your cousins need a faster connection? Hope this helps.

  • I have a MacBook Pro OS X v.10.9.1 that doesn't seem to have a DVD player installed. Any thoughts on what app would be best?

I have a MacBook Pro that doesn't seem to have a DVD player installed. Any ideas on what would be best for viewing?

    Hi
I would try this - from Apple
To burn DVDs  - You know that they come in two versions ?
Data-DVDs - to store files (even movie files) onto - Can not be played on any Video-DVD-player.
Video-DVDs - as commersial movie DVDs
Data-DVDs - can be burned directly from DeskTop/Finder (but only one time/DVD - no incremental storage)
    Video-DVDs - needs a DVD-authoring program.
    • iDVD - is the best possibly for most of us (not avail. from Apple any more)
    • DVD Studio Pro - best ever made ? (not avail. from Apple any more)
    • Roxio Toast™ - I like (I got, I use - rather often)
    • Compressor - $50 from Apple
    • Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store (very simple - Quality ?? not sure - looked problematic reg. Interlacing)
    • Burn - a free alternative from Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
My old note on this - same same:
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Free solutions:
Burn - a free alternative from Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
Gives a fairly good resulting Video-DVD
Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store
(very simple - Quality ?? not sure - looked problematic reg. Interlacing)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Which imac would work best for Graphic Design?

I am a Graphic Designer, currently using Creative Suite 2 (soon to be upgraded to CS3) and I need a new Mac for home. A Powermac takes up too much space, so I'm thinking about an imac with a 24" monitor and I have a few questions for the experts:)
Which imac would work best for graphics?
Is the monitor acurate for Pantone color matching?
Is the 24"monitor on the imac clear and bright?
    Is Leopard a stable OS?
I also need an (inexpensive) color laser printer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a bunch!
Suzi (Machead since the beginning of Mac history)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The 24" iMac uses a superior LCD panel to the 20" model and so is certainly better suited to your purposes. I don't know how badly having a piece of glass in front of the display would affect you as a designer though.
The display certainly is clear and bright. I use it on it's lowest brightness setting.
Leopard is stable but it's worth checking that drivers for any devices that you currently rely on are available. For example I have to go back to my 10.4.11 iMac G4 to use my scanner. Personally I can't get iCal to alarm in Leopard but that's a fairly minor gripe.
As this is the forum for much older iMacs I'd suggest re-posting in the Intel iMac forum and even Mac OS 10.5 Printing forums for better informed opinion:

  • What office program is best for macbook air 2013

what office program is best for macbook air 2013

    To create some sanity here:
If you are going to share files with family, friends, and coworkers Microsoft Office is the obvious and easy (though expensive) choice.
If you are trying to save money and still remain compatible with friends LibreOffice is free and can read/write Microsoft Office files nearly perfectly.
Another free choice is Apple's iWork suite (you'll have to download it from the App store because it isn't pre-installed) Numbers, Pages, and Keynote. These programs read Microsoft documents mostly accurately but not quite as well as LibreOffice and export to Office compatible documents. But neither LibreOffice nor iWork saves in Microsoft formats by default which means you must remember to export them. That can be a problem.
In terms of ease of use I give iWork a slight edge over the other two. In terms of doing annoying things I don't expect, Office is the hands down winner.

  • What MacBook Pro is best for playing, say minecraft - TF2

I am saving up for a MacBook Pro, but I really need some help choosing the right one, help? ^^

Well I talked to a Genius, and they said the 13" model would be best for gaming, and I really don't have £1,200 right now, so I think I will stick with the 13" model.

  • What cable would be best to transfer files?

I just brought a 2013 rMBP- 13' and want to transfer files from a 2009 iMac running 10.6.8. Can I use Migration Assistant...if so what cable would be best? Firewire to firewire?  Also will Snow Leopard be able to talk with Maverick?

Just to be sure....Since there isn't a firewire port on the new 2013 rMBP, I add the Apple ThunderBolt to FireWire Adapter then connect it with a firewire 800 cable to the 2009 iMac.  Then Migration Assistant will be able to transfer over files, etc. Correct?

  • Can i use Avid mbox pro with logic pro x? And also which mac would be best for using avid pro tools 11 ;)

Can i use Avid mbox pro with logic pro x? And also which mac would be best for using avid pro tools 11

If your info is correct you need to first buy Snow Leopard from the Apple on-line store ($20) install and update to 10.6.8 and then buy Lion from the App Store for $20.
