  • Proper Planning for P7N Diamond

After several years of a desperately inadequate computer, I have decided to upgrade. Instead of a simple and easy (but less powerful) upgrade, I decided to build my own. I'll be frank; I have very little idea what I'm doing. I know possibly a little more than the average person, but I possess almost no in depth knowledge. I've selected the parts I wish to buy (haven't purchased yet), and I'm simply finishing up proper research and planning before I go ahead and make the financial commitment.
Here's the major components of the build, at least the ones I'm moderately concerned about.

    EVGA 896-P3-1260-AR GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card
    Kingston HyperX 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) RAM

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit
My main worry is the Mobo and CPU. While according to http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1372&maincat_no=1&orderby=cpu_name%20ASC#menu
Q6600 Quad is compatible, from what I've seen from a few other purchasers of these two there have been a few problems. Considering the Mobo is one of my biggest investments of the build, I want to make sure it can work with everything.
I am NOT CURRENTLY concerned with Overclocking and SLI (maybe further down the line, not right now).
To put it simply; using the P7N Diamond Mobo and the Q6600 Quad core CPU, what are some of the snags I might run into? Will the mobo be able to recognize the CPU right off the bat? Will I need to Flash the Bios? If so, I will need a Floppy Disk Drive, correct? Is there anything severely wrong with the PSU/Mobo/CPU/ETC that would require me changing anything?

A poster above is looking for P6n diamond it is available new from a Dealer on Ebay about 79.00dollars Shipped.i purchased an Asus p5e-3 premium wiFi open Box for 150.00 shipped 3 months ago no issues.he also auctions open box p6n diamond but charges 14.95 but people have won with 40.00 and it averages 50.00.
well i am typing from a P7n running a Q9550 2gigs OCZ 1150 running at 800mhz.No luck whats so ever getting past
2775 overclock.very frustrating but I probably have the original bios.i bought this on ebay at an Auction unopened. It was thirty dollars less with shipping than NewEgg even with the rebate they had.
this a great board i hope and I have to download the Latest Bios and try again.if I am still stuck will have to buy a Q6600go and fallow the various successful overclocks that are listed as i want a modest 24/7 stable overclock at 3.6.
I considered the P6N but having the crystaliser built in pluss the overheating issues with 680i boards coupled with the memory burnout issues decided to spend more money as I am a Semiprofessional Dj and needed something that will last me at least five years running overclocked.P7n has an extraordinary chipset cooler set up.i run old 486/386 fans blowing over everything.
I run two 8800GTX 768m and run 3 22inch lCds and 1 DLP projector and I am driving through the Soundblaster 3 5500 watt amps.MMX6 dj program waves Plugins.Having the ability to swap out the audio Card to another CSB specificaly for recording and midi key board was a Pluss.though could have done with that with the P6N diamond.
Part of my agravations with this board i think is that I am running Xp64 Bare to the bones as fast as linnux but a few minor issues like Asio crashing.i do not like vista but she is triple boot xp64 xp32 and shoosh dont mention it 32 bit 8&56^.
Hey was looking at the quad I think q8500 forgot basicaly same price as q6600 but tired of the hassles would prefer just to get it over with.read on other boards at idle q6600 at 3.6 runs 20-22c.
My board definitely has issues with 45n processors.  At idle 49-50c stock speed on a Modded OCZ II vendetta monster cooler heat pipes with TWO loon fans in push Pull??Well time to cut the Dribble and see what BIOS's are available.Probably I put the  wrong ram into this also.was a Bargain 19.00 shipped after rebate.expected the old style OCZ ram and got the new one same heat pipe desighn nicer lines.
amazing still eist is running only 5percent CPU usage temps stable but high.Going to crank up my audio editor reaper hmm let me ripp some CDs at the same time and see if this CPU will crank up.ah convert some vidio at the same time!
this board computer is also a DAW.My asus is used for vidio editing running a pair of Akimbos.and q9450 and a xifi .CSB of course!Building another asus p5k wi fi to run  connect to 8 wireless cameras so put this q9550 into the Asus vidio editor take the q9450 and get a q6600 for this board and be done with it.
Ah almost forgot the MSI update software etc does not work in my xp64 nlite.
just realised install it on the other partitions!!
forgot to mention the hassles and hours spent installing drivers on this xp64bit build.still have a minor issue my ethernet is labeled ethernet port then ethrnet port 2? and Xp64 keeps trying to Install a 3rd one on bootup?Afraid to uninstall #2 and go through the hassles I went through last week.I guess xp64 is not supported yet on this board just Vista 64 .Which I have on an Hp 9200t media center.i cannot use foul language  as to how frustrating Xp64 Vista is to me.

  • PSU and CPU cooler for Mega PC 651

I got my hands on a 2nd hand msi Mega PC 651 for free because the case does not contain any CPU cooler and PSU.
Where can I bye these components?

    Hi Lewis,
I presume you are refering to this guide?
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/manual/note/quick_installation.pdf
I don't think there are any better instructions, other than what you might get with the CPU. Here's some breif comments that may or may not help though:
Get an anti static strap and attach it to earth, (ie I leave my main PC plugged in and attach to it's chassis, when working on another PC)
Your CPU may be attached to the heatsink with thermal paste, if it is be very careful
On my 865 the CPU heatsink is screwed to the motherboard, it may also be held on with levers. Disconnect it as appropriate
Once the heatsink is loose gently remove it, you may need to lift one side first or it may lift the whole CPU out
Once the heatsink is out lift the CPU lever, the CPU will easily lift out
you may wish to remove the old thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink, I use ArctiClean 1+2 check your CPU supplier for options
put the CPU straight into an antistatic bag
Only when you are finished playing with your PC insides should you take off the antistatic strap
If you are still unhappy with these instructions try checking out the Intel or AMD website for help
    Hope this helps
    cheers

If you're not overclocking, then the standard cooler that comes with retail boxed CPU will be just fine.

A inch off: wlahdone, much dust gathered in front of the processor fan, on the graphics card, tells me you can improve on the air flow. Two ideas:
     - A stronger exhaust fan.
     - An air filter of some kind for the intake fan, or turn it off completely.
     - A tower processor fan that directs dust towards the exhaust fan.
Yes there is some dust on the HAWK That has accumulated since i ve bought it, high quality ~1 year dust
I usually clean the video card on the other area Don t want to disturb something with static as it works.
For already 2 months i ve replaced the case with a Nexus Clodius and indeed i may put the front fan to the mobo and set it at a lower speed (as the included controler sets them both in same time) ,to create that required air pressure.
And the case alows me to put one on the top of the case as well.I usually use a Cooler Master TX2 for the CPU and that one does send the air to the exhaust one.

  • Quietest CPU Cooler for K8N Neo 2 Platinum Motherboard?

I am just now getting around to concentrating on making my system as quiet as possible (without water cooling).
Searching the forum and the net, I found lot of favorable comments about the Zalman 7700 cooler, but their website indicates it will not fit on the K8N Neo2 Platinum.  Has anyone actually tried to see it if fits or not?  Also if it does fit, will it work with the MSI stock backplate as I do not want to have to remove the backplate.
Any suggestions for other CPU coolers that are quiet that are known to fit on this mb?
Can people who have had experiences getting CPU coolers to work with this MB please post your experiences here?  If there are sufficent replies to make this thread useful, I will add it to the sticky section.

  • Which CPU Cooler for AM2 board

    Hi!
Right now i am just running with the Box cooler from sempron 3400+ on my K9N-platinium board.
I hope soon to get the AM2 Mountingkit for my Noctua but it can still take 3-4 weeks, so i am looking for another cooler untill then.
I know it is different from country to country which cooler are available, but which Cooler do you use?

ok, you didn't mention the OC-ing part in your post. like always, i would suggest zalman if you're after something cool and quiet
    My Bad ;-)
Right now my Sempron gets 1.45V and running 2400mhz...in prime stress test 2004 it gets up to 42-43C.
I think around 1.4-1.25V probably would be enough, but the Atrix 500W psu that a have in the system right now is not that stable.
Anyway, i'm hoping to hit 2600MHZ with the right cooling.

  • CPU cooler for HP Pavilion m9340f

My CPU fan is kaput. Already replaced fan once. Wanted to replace whole unit. Nothing fits. Old heatsink is screw-in. Can't seem to find replacement unit with screw-in heatsink and 4 prong fan plug. I've searched Fry's, Tiger direct. Now using unit that doesn't fit and is bad for long-term survival of cpu. • PWM Fan for P7N Diamond

I was thinking to swap my "Scythe S-FLEX 1600RPM Ultra Quiet" fan that is currently pushing some air through my Thermalright Ultra Extreme to some 120 PWM fan. I don't actually want to replace it, I was more thinking to keep that Scythe to use it with a push & pull method on my TRUE 120 (PWM to push and regular one to pull). But before I do that I have few questions:
    1) Is there any actual difference between regular fan & PWM fan by that I mean performance / efficiency / energy wise? Is there any benefit?
    2) Will I somehow be able to control both of those fans, (I wouldn't want to have them on full speed at all times)
    3) With which PWM fan should I got with?
I did find few quite promising fans. Maybe someone has more experience with them? Anyway here they are:
Nexus 120mm PWM Silent Case Fan more details from here http://www.nexustechnologyusa.com/c/ntusa/nexus_pwm_fan_120.html
Scythe 120mm "KAMA PWM" Fan more details from here http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/020/dfspwm_detail.html
Arctic Cooling 120mm AF12025 PWM more details from here http://www.arctic-cooling.com/fans2.php?idx=108&data=6&disc=
With the "Kama PWM" I would have to do some customisation as it has closed corners. The other 2 seem to have a open corners. I really wouldn't like to bother with that Schyte but if its best of those three I would buy that one.
All ideas and thoughts are appreciated
    Janx

The thumb of airflow rule is to maintain a good balance of air (cfm) flowing in and out.
This is to say that if you have a fan that is capable of pushing in 30cfm of air into the system, the balance point is to have a fan that is capable of pulling similar amount or slightly higher amount of air out of the system, example 30cfm ~ 35cfm. You must not have overflow of cfm flowing into the system as this will cause warm air to circulate and stuck in the system. The same goes for the amount of air being pulled out as the system will be vaccumed in a way if there's not enough ventilating holes for air to flow in quickly.
Just rememeber that the cfm demand for both inlet and exhaust fans must be maintain at good level. Next will be the cooling circumference and fins. Wider circumference will help to spread the airflow to the hardwares within the system, and well designed fins will help in creating less decibels while maintaining good airflow cfm.

  • Which CPU Cooler did you use for your CPU?

Hi guys, just wondering, what CPU Cooler did you use in your mega 865?
Did you use the Intel or the MSI CPU cooler?
Which do you think is better?
I used the MSI CPU Cooler, Which I think is better cause it has a copper base which can transfer heat faster. Also the heatsink must have been designed for the case too.

    ^
The Mega 865 came with an additional "extra page" on how to install the Intel CPU Heat Sink into the 865, so it could be that msi thought that intel's solution was better? The manual of course had how to install the msi heat sink, so rather than printing the manual again, they provided an extra information sheet.

  • Stability Problems with P7N Diamond Continues

Big bummer. I've had this system since April, took a month to get it working as the first board I ordered was bad, this one seems to be a bum board. I've came here and a few other places, but help has been kind of hard to find.
    Here's what I got:
    MSI P7N Diamond
    Intel QX9650
    2x 2GB mushkin DDR2 1066 (XP2-8500) Timings: 5-5-5-15 2T
    I have 4 HD's: all are seagate baracudas: 250, 500, 750, 1TB
    MSI NX8600GT1GEZ
At this point overclocking is out of the question. All I want is a reliable PC that runs to its specifcations. RMA-ing this board is a last resort as often enough the RMA boards aren't worth a crap anyway, dont know if this is just the case with lower-end boards, but I hate having to wait, and I'm really ticked about the whole thing.
The computer reboots at random, I've found "more stable" configurations, but usually the machine will not stay running for more than 24 hours without a reboot. The most stable configurations are with the official 1.2 BIOS, setting the NB to 1.250 v, CPU Volt: Auto, SB: Auto, DRAM: 2.10, and I have manually set the memory timings: CL: 5, trcd: 5, trp: 5, tras: 15, and Command Rate: 2T. The FSB Speed: 1333, and the DRAM Speed: 1066. Temps are normal, and range from about 100 F at idle, and 120 F load on the CPU.
The voltage on the CPU is on the high side on Auto, the QX9650 can run on as little as .98 v at stock and this board is giving it 1.23 v on auto. The board also tries to set the timings on the memory to 7-7-7-24, which I feel has something to do with it.
I'm not an overclocker, I don't know what all these voltages do, I've only changed settings that have either been reccomended or have a warning setting (ie turn red).
I'll try a beta BIOS if one is available, but I was unaware that this board doesn't fully support the 45-nm CPU's.
There is NOTHING wrong with any of the hardware (except the board perhaps), I've tried other memory, PSU, even RMA the CPU, does the same thing. Everything has been tested, every possibility I can imagine, this problem has been haunting this system for months, and I'm almost to the point of buying a cheap as board that has some credibility that my hardware will work.
This is my most critical computer, I do everything on it, but I didn't buy a $300 motherboard to have these problems, or find that my CPU scores half of what it should when it is running stock, everything on this board is below stock, benchmarks are way below what they should be.
I'm up for some ideas, suggestions, if needed, I'll RMA the board, but it the return board does the same thing, I've lost all my faith in MSI. My last system had a P4M900M2 and it kicked butt, and it's a $50 board!  Go figure these boards are worse than imported cars.

Quote from: NovJoe on 27-September-08, 12:40:17
By means of instability, can you describe the symptons of events that happen?
Can I have a list of the PSU models and RAMs models which you have tested?
Have you try the hardware on another board? If you have done so, what are the results?
I have not tried any of my hardware on this board, I have tried other memory on this board, this is the only board I have avialable to me that support LGA775 so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on that. The memory I tired, couldn't tell you the exact model, but it was Apacer DDR2 800, and was listed under this board as tested memory, i do remember that much- if that helps any.
As far as overclocking, I was told that overclocking my rig would make it stable, which i feel in this case is a little more than bumping the FSB eitherway. But no this happens under "stock" settings. Orginally with the 1.0 BIOS the machine would sometimes give me a multitude of BSOD, CLOCK_INTERRUPT (A clock inttrupt was not recieved in a timely manner on a secondary processor), DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
Only way to get the machine to run "stable" is to severely underclock, with the FSB at 1137 and DRAM at 1034.
Other things. Benchmarks (SiSoft Sandra Lite 2007)
CPU: Drystone: 39000 MIPS / Whetstone: 28000 MFLOPS
    Memory: 7 GB/sec (1066 with correct timings)
Both appear to be under par, CPU particularly, and in the event of tinkering, only see a jump in performance when adjusting the multiplier from 9 to 10.5, which isn't stable, stable enough to run a benchmark. So I'm not sure where the problem is.
This might help, the original thread from back in June.

  • Msi p7n-diamond and coolermaster hyper48

    Hi friends
Just wanted to know whether coolermaster CPU cooler Hyper48 will fit with msi p7n-diamond mobo with intel q6600.Will it work?
    Kindly suggest

I can't answer specifically, but did purchase and install a Rosewill RCX-Z4 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for my p7n board with an E8400 processor.  I looked at that Coolermaster product but was a little concerned it wouldn't fit because of the heat pipes.  I opted to use the Rosewill brand as it had a better form factor, and it vents out the top of my case.
My only complaint about the Rosewill is you can't get to the CPU power connectors on the board (8 pin) inside the case with the cooler attached.  The fan assembly gets in the way.
