What date did Apple's discussion forums begin?

Does anyone know when the Apple discussion forums started?
I ask this in in relation to Apple being aware (through these forums) of consumer issues /problems / suggestions and then taking the information onboard in development of their products. In my mind the users of apple computers have fed back into the design and updating of hardware/software over the years and the forums (including the criticism they sometimes contain) have facilitated Apple to respond to user needs.
Thanks.

Apple folks may peek in here from time to time, but this is not where they get much, if any, such info. The only place I've ever seen an Apple employee post is in this one forum, about how the forums work. Otherwise, it's user-to-user.
I've asked a couple of Apple Product Engineers (for Time Machine) if they ever look in the forums for problems, and was told no. If you follow many threads here, especially the ones with lots of posts that might look like a fairly general problem, you'll usually find different problems, different hardware and software, all sorts of digressions, etc., and rarely enough specifics for anybody to figure out what's actually going on. It just wouldn't be very productive. They use actual problems reported to AppleCare, the bugreport site, or the feedback site, and no doubt do various sorts of market research, surveys, etc.
In addition, they do beta testing with experienced users who provide feedback for changes and enhancements, as well as problem reports.

  • What date did production of the Macbook begin?

Week 25s our out in the stores now?
I got a week 20 that I ordered online on 16th of May when they were first released.
What was the date of week 1?
Does anyone out there have anything less than a week 19?
    thanks
    Paul

Perhaps you haven't been caught in the "Apple
    Infinite Loop".
I've had over 15 calls with Apple over a brand new
Macbook that in the end they decided it needed a new
Logic board and offered me a refund.
Average calls were 30 min or more and I lost a chunk
of my time that I can't get back. That's not to
mention the hours/days spent troubleshooting, the
lost sleep and the heart ache.
I'm trying to keep tabs on the week numbers so that
when I buy a new one I have the greatest chance of it
    being faultless.
If you’re not interested in the topic don’t read the
    post.
Now get back in your box.
Hey, don't be that rude because you lost sleep and have heart ache.
And I'm sorry to hear your problems with apple infinite loop, and I hope now the problem resolved.
I do interested in the topic, and I try explain to you people that this is a support not a poll forum, and corelation between "week number" and "using the MacBook" is very slim to none.
If there is a forum opened for "week number", feel free to flooded with similar post like this one. And I'll stay in my box.
And here is quote of the agreement you "must" read and agree before posting something:
    http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#adua
    2. Submissions
Don't post non-constructive complaints, polls, or petitions.
    Peace out.
ps: just to kill my curiousity, when apple found out your logic board need to be replace, and offer you refund for your money, did they told you the reason because is was build on the "bad week".

  • What data is apple services?

I'm using Onava to identify excessive data use on my iPhone. One of the culprits is listed as "Apple Services". Anyone have inisght as to what that might include? It is not the App store for that comes under a different category.

From what I understand, that would be the diagnostic data sent to Apple. Check in Settings, General, About, Diagnostics and Usage. Do you have Automatically send checked? If so, check Don't Send. That sends diagnostic data to Apple on occassion to help them improve iPhones. It does not send anything about you, just about your phone. I have mine turned off and the phone works just fine, so it does not have to be on.

  • Apple's Discussion Forums: an important technical resource

There have been ongoing discussions within Apple regarding whether or not to continue supporting these discussion forums, specifically, the issue of continuing to employ live humans to monitor and moderate them. It seems to me that it would not be a significant drain on Apple Computer Inc.'s resources to employ 1-2 persons to comb this (very large) discussions site for significant unresolved issues having broad relevance to the Mac user community. Said issues could then be routed either to a small, forums-dedicated team of Apple engineers, or distributed to the larger second-tier support group such that each tech rep would only have to handle a few responses per week (or month, depending on the size of the available employee pool). The net benefits to Apple -- in terms of reduced number of tech support calls, a more-empowered, self-sufficient, and satisfied user base, and increased goodwill toward the company -- would, in my estimation, more than repay the salaries and efforts required to keep these discussion forums running efficiently and effectively. I believe Apple is savvy enough and responsible enough to know this; they have probably done the calculus. Perhaps, then, our most important task is to let the parent firm know that we use and value this resource. Hopefully, Apple managers will note and make the right decisions.

Yes ... but why pay for it when they have a very good base of people that respond to postings? ... actually let me ask a better question.... if you were apple why would you bother to tell everyone the screen name of the moderator ... don't you think they'd get absolutely bombarded with email?
    Maybe I'm a moderator ...

    jinxter,
You may wish to post your topic in the Feedback About Discussions forum found at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076&start=0
    That forum specifically states:
"This Feedback about the Discussions forum is intended for questions about how to use Apple Discussions and for general constructive feedback about how the Discussions system is operating or how it may be improved."
    hope that helps some,
    littleshoulders [:-)
edit: I see that you already have a topic in the Feedback/Discussions forum. I'm not sure of the purpose of your topic here?

  • What exactly did Apple Repair accomplish?

    Hi,
I sent in my MacBook for repair last week because of a high pitched chirping that occured on playback when I used the built-in mic and built-in iSight simultaneously. I just got it back about half an hour ago, and the problem still exists.
They did change out a few parts, one being the heatsink assembly (HEATSINK ASSY, K36), but I have no clue what "PCBA, MLB, BEST" is, or what either of them have to do with a faulty microphone.
The problem description on the work order read:
"Issue: When recording audio with the built-in microphone, you get a loud, annoying high-pitched noise when activating the built-in iSight camera. The sound goes away when recording audio only."
At the moment, I am nowhere near an Apple Store, and my complimentary phone support is expired. If I call Apple Support about the repair in particular, will they try to charge me?
I may just end up driving out somewhere just to have it sent for repair again...

Alright, so I was digging through my Trash in hopes of finding some evidence (QuickTime recording-- or something) that Apple tested the hardware before shipping it back to me.
Thankfully, I did... and playing it back, I noticed two things about the video:
    1. The high-pitched "chirping" interference was gone
    2. The location of the recording was in a warehouse-like environment -- which means lots of background noise and very bright lighting conditions -- (i.e. tungsten-based light sources)
You may be wondering why I even bothered to mention the lighting conditions... but let me try to explain.
All the tests that I've run were under "normal indoor lighting conditions", meaning 75- watt light bulbs. Further testing proved that when reducing the amount light, the interference would get progressively worse, maybe because the iSight is working harder to pick up whatever ambient light is available.
Right now, it's raining outside, very cloudy.. House lights are off, and the window blinds are open. I start recording (both video and audio), and the interference is very loud. When I turn on some lights in the house, the interference is still there and still very noticeable, but nowhere near the level when lights in the house were off. When I point the camera to the ceiling at the light source, the interference (which is nearly "chirp-like") smooths into a steady tone and greatly reduces in volume.
Hmmm...Another thing I've noticed about the video left behind by Apple:
    3. The iSight camera was pointing toward the ceiling and the bright warehouse lights when the test was conducted.
    Any takers?

  • Why isn't there an Apple Support/Discussions Forum app?

I think this would be very useful.

Just FYI, the forum software wasn't developed by Apple. It's a commercial package from Jive Software, and this rather old version of the software, to the best of my knowledge, did not have a "mobile" version. Apple is working on a new "Communities" which will use different forum software, and at that time it's possible that there might be a mobile version. We'll have to wait and see, though, until such time as Apple is ready to say more.
    Regards.

  • What program is apple using to make there website?

I was wondering (because I would like a website as powerful as apples and as easy to use as iweb). What Program did apple use to make there website and do you need multiple programs to do those things such as. the way buttons are animated not using flash, and the search function, and forums and store, etc.
Anyways, this aught to be an interesting discussion

There is really no way to know what Apple uses to build their site.
There is no reason why you can not make a good looking, fast site in iWeb. The only reason why your website may not look as nice is because you are probably not a professional website designer like the people behind Apple's site.
If your site is too slow consider reducing the number of images you use on your website, making sure your text is not converted to images, you switch to a real web hosting provider and not rely on MobileMe, and you run your iWeb website through a web site optimizer.

  • FCP and 3D animation discussion forum?

I have noticed, this apple support discussion forum site is very useful.
However, I'm in the 3D animation editing filed using FCP.
I have post several question regarding using my rendered frames importing into FCP and yada yada yada, and I have hard time have get down to the final solution. (don't get me wrong, I really appriciate whoever gave me suggestion and it has been helpful!!).
Here is my question... if there is anyone know forum that's more toward 3D animation using FCP?
I googled them but not much luck finding them.
If there is anyone who know any site, please let me know!!

  • What format do Apple IIGS CD-ROM's use?

I am trying to make a CD-ROM that is readable on an Apple IIGS. What format did Apple II CD-ROM's use? I'm assuming that they were not ProDOS because ProDOS has a maximum capacity of 32MB. They must have been some kind of hybrid format.

This article (from a search including Archives) says they are ISO 9660:
    SYSTEM SOFTWARE:
The Apple IIGS Personal computer features Version 5.0.4 of Apple IIGS System Software, including the following:
    • GS/OS Operating System. Exclusively created for the Apple IIGS personal computer, GS/OS dramatically increases the speed of both disk access and program launching. It also includes File System Translators (FSTs) that allow applications to directly access files created using other file systems, such as the ISO/High Sierra file system used by CD-ROM devices.

  • Strange Problem Logging Into Discussions Forums

Lately, I have had trouble logging in to Apple's Discussion Forums. Here's a typical experience:
    - I go to the Discussioins forum (I am current logged out)
    - I click on Login
    - My user name is already filled out.
    - I manually enter my password.
    - The forum takes me to a "create new account" screen.
    - I ignore the "new account" screen and click on the Discussions tab at the top of Apple's website.
    - I'm back in the Discussions Forum, but it still shows Login.
    - I click on Login and I'm automatically logged in.
Any idea why I'm having this issue?

Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

    Hi,
Apple in this case has to rely on what software is out there that can handle the amount of Traffic that these boards get.
This is from the Brows Option the selecting People in the box
    Note the Number
At the Launch of the new software this was at just over 2,250,000 and has now topped 2,300,000
That is well over 50,000 people joining in just 2 weeks.
Jive are the only real players in this market.
To some extent the software is a one size fits all, much like the previous software was.
We got used to the look and the Folder type layout of the Previous software.
We ignored the foibles of where things were placed.
Things are somewhat double edged in my view.
    I post mostly about iChat.
I don't like that the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums that were are now "Refine the List"/Tag led searching to read specific threads. (not to mention that returning to "Dicussions" loses the "refinement").
On the other hand those same threads and anwsers are now a lot more viewable in the OS forums than the subforums of before.
As a regular poster I use a couple of Boiler plate things for a welcome message and my Signature.
Some were made with TextExpander and included the HTML code to sttyle things slightly.
These no longer work without going to the HTML editor.
Posting link used to use the BBCodeXtra add-on to Firefox but this action is now included in the Regular and Advanced Editor.
That means I equipped myself and used things to get around shortcomings of the old software which is some cases I either don't need or need to learn the new way.
I am sure the Style will morph as we go along.
Of course some of this relies on what exactly you mean by:-
