What DCIF directory formats does iPhoto 11 recognize?

Hi.  When I connect my Motorola DEFY XT phone to my Mac by USB, the following file structure shows up related to camera images.  I'm starting at the top of the SD card (which has the path /Volumes/DEFY on my Mac):
/DCIM
   /.thumbnails
      .thumbdata3--1234567890  Ten digits, not dates, these aren't the real digits.
      .thumbdata3-1234567890
      1357964898997.jpg        Eleven digits, Unix date ints.
   /100ANDRO
                               empty directory
   /Camera
       IMG_20130111_201317.jpg
       IMG_20130111_201330.jpg
       IMG_20130111_204252-1.jpg  8:45 pm
       IMG_20130111_204252.jpg    8:42 pm
       VID_20130111_232802.3gp
When I plug the phone into the computer, the SD card mounts, and iPhoto starts up, but it doesn't offer to import any photos.
With the Image Capture utility, the device is there, "open iPhoto" is checked, and no pictures are shown.
(I have done "repair disk permissions" on my Mac disk FWIW.)
Except for the empty 100ANDRO directory, the above doesn't quite match the DCIM spec as described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_rule_for_Camera_File_system which is more like
/DCIM/123ABCDE/IMG_1234.JPG   Literally 3 digits + 5 alphanumeric / 4 "alphanumerics" + "a number".jpg
...but then again, many cameras don't.
So, my question is, does iPhoto 11 (or Image Capture) accept anything but the strict directory and file name formats?  Is there any way to configure or convince it to?

Poking around Help in Image Capture, I noticed it says, "Some camera manufacturers supply software that makes the camera compatible with Mac OS X. Check with the manufacturer or visit the manufacturer’s website to find out if software is available."  Manufacturers like Canon, for instance, from some information I found linked off Wikipedia, don't follow DCIM correctly and must be supplying plugins to Image Capture.  Anyway, that clued me to google for "macos x developers" "image capture", which led to
http://www.figuiere.net/hub/blog/?2012/06/20/827-android-phone-camera-failure#co
Which lead to the Android developer forum.  It's a known bug in the base Android software that some manufacturers like Motorola haven't patched.  Quoting  http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2960
"While iPhoto 7.1.5 (OSX 10.5) had no problem reading it, iPhoto 8.1.2 (OSX 10.6) is more picky and refuses to work on it."
From the same Google Code discussion, there's a link to the
SOLUTION: Download "DCIM Helper" from the Google Play Store.  It's free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.sineo.android.dcim&hl=en

    Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

    There have been many issues reported with Kodak cameras - serach the forums for them
    Actually the best practise is to use a card reader to import your photos, verify that they are imported ocrrectly and wait at least one backup cycle and then use the camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it - this assures no lost photos and always having the card properly formatted

  • What video file formats does premiere like?

    I have been having sync issues when i import mpeg quicktimes, i notice its a thing with premiere. I have to use these files. Other people in my office love their final cut, and making it another type of file would not sit well with them. But what files run optimally on premiere? FCP works wonderfully with ProRes files. Is there a preferred file for premiere as well?

    For SD (Standard Definition) the "native" format for CS5 Windows is DV AVI type 2 with 16bit 48khz sound
    But... what is the exact codec inside that mpeg, and what are it's settings?

  • How does iPhoto recognize duplicates?

    I recently imported a folder (including several sub-folders) of photos into iPhoto.  It asked me if I wanted to import duplicates, and showed me a side-by-side of the two pictures in question.  Since they we're clearly the same, I said no.  After doing that for several photos, I finally said no for all duplicates, and the import rapidly completed.
    But then I got to thinking.   How does iPhoto actually recognize a duplicate?  Is it solely by the external characteristics (name, date, size), or does it have a method to actually analyize the content of the two photos to see if one is actually a copy of the other?  I  really hope it is not just by name, as I have a number of photos that have the same name but complelely different topics.

    Duplicate files are detected by comparing file name and the EXIF Capture Date.
    There is one photo duplicate detection app that detects duplicate images by comparing the bit map or histogram of the image.
    PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.

    Ever since I installed Leopard I've noticed this happening more and more - especially when I install an external hard drive or unplug my ethernet line - this is plainly weird and never happened under Tiger - the temperature shoots up to 84° also - I always to a restart to get rid of it but it's kind of worrying....anybody have any ideas?

    Had this happen myself.
    It does have something to do with Spotlight/searching. Should go away after a while, or so I have heard from other users, 'cause it hasn't stopped driving me and my fan mad yet.
    Am going to have my MacBook index and follow-up on indexing and whatever else it feels is necessary to finally allow me to search in peace over the weekend while locking it away where I can't hear it.
    Hopefully that does the trick.
    If it wasn't for things working better/faster and most things looking better I might actually consider taking Leopard off again ...

  • In what character format does CS5 Export HTML?

    In what character format does indesign export html?
    I am having trouble writting a parsing script because text that looks like:
    of mutations to particular “hotspot” regions
    becomes, to my chagrin,
    of mutations to particular “hotspot regions
    Here is my java code that simulates this problem. Perhaps somebody knows which encoding to choose on Windows 7 pro x64?
        public static int CopyFile()
            try
            StringBuffer sb = null;
            String NullSpace = System.getProperty("line.separator");
            //Writer output = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(outputFile));
            BufferedWriter output = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(new FileOutputStream(outputFile),"UTF-8"));
            String line;
            BufferedReader input =  new BufferedReader(new FileReader(myFile));
            while((line = input.readLine())!=null)
                    sb = new StringBuffer();
                    //Parsing happens
                    sb.append(line);
                    output.write(sb.toString()+NullSpace);
                return 0;
            catch (Exception e)
                return 1;

    This particular line is the culprit (a case of What You Ask Is What You Get, really a rarity):
    BufferedWriter output = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(new FileOutputStream(outputFile),"UTF-8"));
    -- and what you see is UTF-8 Encoding in action (rather, what you see with a non-UTF-8 aware text editor).
    Check the Javascript Tools Guide, section "File- and Folder-supported encoding names", for an encoding that better suits your needs. Actually, you might want to check the generated HTML file -- UTF8 is a perfectly acceptable character encoding, but you have to tell your browser it is this one.
    Alternatively, you can always check the string buffer text for any character codes (which are Unicodes) above 126 and replace these with the universal "&#xxx;" notation for out-of-range character codes.

    The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
    iLife 08's full system requirements are:
    Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
    iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
    iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
    512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM
    3 GB of available disk space

  • HT3258 what about final cut does not recognize mts file

    what about final cut does not recognize mts file

    If you have an AVCHD camcorder, you need to select one of the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec Easy Setups in FCE that matches how you shot the video in your camcorder.  (eg, AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 would be appropriate for camcorders produced for North America unless you selected some other video type in the camera's setup.)   After selecting the appropriate Easy Setup, create a new sequence then import the video from your camcorder.
    If you only have the .mts files themselves (perhaps because you copied them to your hard drive without their entire surrounding AVCHD folder structure), that's another matter.  In that case you need Clipwrap or similar app to transcode the .mts files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing them into FCE.   You still need to have the correct easy setup in FCE.
    It would help to know exactly what make/model camcorder you have, and what model Mac and versions of OS X and QuickTime.
