What Determines download speed using Wi-Fi on 4S?

When downloading using Wi-Fi in a home or hotel, the speed is determined by the underlying carrier for the Wi-Fi, not the carrier for the 4S, correct?

Well, the most important thing is the ability to make/receive calls. 85% dropped calls is certainly unacceptable. If at your house only, ask AT&T about giving you one of these:

They work.

  • Loss of download speed using airport extreme and express.

I have Wifi using an Airport extreme base station and an airport express extender.  However, the download speed drops from 21 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Any suggestions to boost the express other than an ethernet connection which would be difficult.

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and take speed measurement at that exact location.
Whatever that is.....likely in the 8-10 Mpbs range......is what the Express will try to "extend".
In other words, the Express can only extend the bandwidth or speed that it receives. It cannot make the connection that it receives go any faster. In that regard, the term "repeater" is probably a more accurate description of what the Express is trying to accomplish.
If you want the Express to extend faster speeds, then it must be located closer to the AirPort Extreme. In addition, anything that you can do to reduce any obstructions in the signal path between the AirPorts will help.
Ideally, you want a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPorts to help reduce the amount of speed loss that occurs with any wireless connection.

  • Slow Download Speeds using itunes store?

    Hi.
For the last couple of days any song i've downloaded on itunes has been downloading painfully slow, and im pretty sure it's not a problem from my end. Is anything like this happening to anyone else?

I have noticed the same thing. For the last days I have conly download speeds od 300 kbps from Itunes. At first, I thought it was my internet connection speed. I have checked and recchecked it. With differen meters I have 3 Mbps. So it is not a matter of my connection. It must be something happening at the iTunes store.
Please, if anybody knows about this problem, please advice.

  • Very slow download speeds using Safari

I am on cable and using a wireless network. My MacBook Pro (running Snow Leopard) is very slow to download compared to an old PC that I keep around for "stuff" on it. Is anyone else having the same experience? Do I need to take the MacBook in to the geniuses to have them look at it? I don't dare try Netflix as much as I'd like to.

    Start by troubleshooting networking.
    Drivers for your Windows chipset.
Include more details as to router, firmware, what MAC you have even?
I would never disable firwalls or AV and security settings but you don't want to have two firewalls running.
Most people complain that Windows is faster and their OS X is slow.
Also, wired or wireless? you have not given us anything to go by.

  • What determines import speed?

I'm digitizing my CD collection, computer was importing around 8x-10x speed, then dropped to .6x speed when I put in a new disc! This happend 2 or 3 times already...is there a setting I forgot to check? Or does import speed change depending on the cd?
    Thanks for the help!

Do you have error correction on in the settings? Not usually needed, as most disks import OK. That will slow it down. Your DVD drive could be getting old or they could have been harder to copy disks.

  • Continous major drops in download speeds Using HighSpeed

I have been having this ongoing issue for almost two weeks now with my highspeed connection dropping instantly from 2.294 to as low as 0.034. My web pages won't load,my music won't play and my games have become totally useless now to me. I have contact Verizon multiple times in regaurds to this issue. Last I was told was it was an issue at the Central Office and would be fixed on April 10,2011 by 5pm. Well here it is April 13,2011 and i am still having the same issues.
I have a few other friends in the neighboring area who also have been having the exact same trouble with their connections.
I am going to contact live chat again and request yet another report be made.
We have done all we could think of on MY end-checking wires, restarting modem, settings,pw's,wireless settings, scans for malware/virus,you name it,it's been done.
I am seriously considering leaving Verizon as my provider if the issue is not fixed and soon.

You are making us shoot into the dark. It would help to know at least:
#1 What is the brand and model of your modem?
#2 What is the brand and model of your router?

  • Using Speedtest, all my iOS 7.1 devices are showing slow internet download speeds on my home WiFi network.

I have four iOS devices, an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4, and an iPad2.  All but the iPad2 are running iOS 7.1.  The iPad2 is still iOS 7.0.4.  I am only getting 1mbs download speeds with the iOS 7.1 devices.  The iPad2, as well as my Windows 7 laptop on the same WiFi network, are getting a full 15mbs download speed using the Ookla Speedtest.  I have tried resetting the wireless router, as well as resetting the network configurations on the iOS devices, rebooting the devices, etc., but the slow speeds persist.  While I can't definitively tie the issue to the iOS 7.1 upgrade, I distinctly recall running speedtests on the iPad Air in the past, and getting 15mbs.
    Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks for the reply, Jim.  I double-checked my wireless router settings against the recommendations in the link you provided.  Only one setting was different.  I had the 2.4GHz channel width set to auto, and the recommendation is 20MHz.  I made this change.  The 5GHz channel is disabled on my router.
After the change, I got mixed results.  My iPhone 5S now gets over 15Mbs, but my iPad Air gets less than 1Mbs.  My iPad2, as well as my laptop, continue to get over 15Mbs.  I don't think the issue is with the router configuration at this time.  Any other suggestions?

  • Slow Modem Users-Please Test Download Speed & Report Back

    Dear iMac G5 Users,
Several of us have tested download speeds using our built-in 56K modems. Nobody has been able to get our iMacs to download at anything over about 29 kbps or 3.6 KBytes/sec. That looks to be about half of what is advertised. (No surprise really - I can only burn DVD-R's at half Apple's advertised speed). My old G3's modem will easily download at least 5.8 KBytes/sec or 46K. That's much more reasonable for a 56K modem.
Could you users check your download speed at some place like: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and post your results here?

I did the Speakeasy test from my home, and I got 24 kbps. However, this is the same speed
I got on an iMac DV with its built-in modem.
Yesterday I took my G5 iMac over to a friend's house; I wanted to test the modem
speed from a better line, and to verify that the airport card worked properly.
When I connected, Internet Connect app reported 50667 kbps.
When I did the Speakeasy test, it reported 43 kbps. This location used to
get 40000 on a Bondi iMac when it first came out (OS 8.1) so I figured this was about right.

  • My download speed - Problem or just this slow?

Well I've always had bad download speeds, guessing because of my area and such, but they seem to have gotten worse lately. My max download speeds used to be around 120kb/sec but now I'm lucky if they even reach 60kb/sec ( not in peak times )
Now I'm not exactly networking savvy, but I did that BT speed test and the results are:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 413 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-500 Kbps.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Because you accidently disconnected it, you'll need to remain connected for 3 -5 days (which shouldn't be long now) and allow the profile to rise, I dont think it will rise, but it may just nudge the system and may work...
Alternatively you could contact the mods, and ask for an SNR reset which should give your sync speed a boost and in turn give the system a kick up the backside and tell it to get its ass in gear .  You can contact the mods using this link http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 .

  • Apple TV 2 Download Speeds Very Slow

I am using an Airport Extreme with ATV2.  My ethernet connected download speeds are very fast yet my apple tv (and my other IOS devices  - ipads) struggles to download movies from itunes.   Most recently it showed over 2 hours to download a rented movie from itunes.
All equipment is updated with the latest software.
Any ideas about how I can see what the download speed is on my Apple TV?
Any thoughts on how I might be able to fix the problem wiht my apple TV

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Very slow DOWNLOAD speeds compared to other household computers?

I am connecting via Wireless. All other computers are connecting via wireless aswell. The same router is used for all computers. On all the other computers in the house, download speeds are up to 3 Mbps. On my computer, download speeds are up to 20-50 Kbps. I don't understand why. My download speed used to be 1 Mbps, and that changed about a month ago. I don't understand why. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

I would have to disagree with ornahp.  Being a computer technician myself, it seems more likely that the computer experiencing the issue is configured differently (as Smith6612 indicated).
There could be several reasons why 1 computer experiences different download speeds compared to another.  Without knowing the specs, programs, and physical location of each computer and what is between the computers and router, there is no real way to give a difinitive answer/solution.
Also, how are you testing/monitoring your download speeds?  Are you downloading items from a website, downloading items through a torrent/magnet, using a speed test site?
Your computer could be infected with malicious software (virus, spyware, etc)
Your computer could have multiple "Auto-Update" programs running (Microsoft Updates, Adobe Updates, etc)
Your computer might be connecting using older technology (not likely, but possible) 802.11b compared to 802.11g
The times that you are download might be during higher traffic times causing more load on verizon's network, decreasing your speed.
Other computers on your network may be using bandwidth shrinking the access that you have.
These are only a few things that can affect download speeds.

  • Very slow download speed with Airport Express

    Hi.
I've recently experienced painfully slow downlink (download) speed using Airport Express.
    My WiFi configuration:
    - main router: WRT54G connected to my provider (speed limit: 4Mbit up/down link),
    - AirPort Express with WiFi N and Airtunes hooked up to stereo in living room,
    - AirPort Express WiFi G and Airtunes connected to stereo on bedroom.
Second Airport is currently not used to simplify tests and description of my problem.
The problem: when connecting from MacBook to Airport Express I can't reach more than approx. 512kbit downloading from internet, usually even 300kbit, while uplink reaches easily 2.5Mbit (limited probably by my network provider). While connected to WRT54G I can get 2.5 up to 4Mbit downlink, same when using cable directly plugged in to WRT54G.
I tried changing channels, switching different options in Airport with no effect - still getting pathetic download speeds. Even worse - browsing experience is awful, with frequent slowdowns, etc.
I tried different encryption methods, and seems like only switching it off at all (unprotected network) seems to let my Airport work on full speed (2.5Mbits symmetrically up/down, up to 4Mbits - provider speed limit) - which is unacceptable, I refuse to set up and use unprotected network at home.
Problem is clearly in Airport or in interaction between Airport and Macbook. I've just ran out of ideas - can you help me?

I can't offer any help with your problem except for the fact that mine has recently done the exact same thing. It's ridiculous, for months and months it was extremely fast and then all of a sudden it takes 20 minutes to open a simple browser page. Something is definitely wrong with the airport because all other wireless internet connections from other routers are as usual. \

  • Very slow download speed though modem line rate no...

    Hi
I recently noticed (today, 31st December) that our download speed had dropped very low, to approx 0.5Mbps. The upload speed is normal, approx 1Mbps. The modem line rate is however normal (8Mbps dowm, 1Mbps up). I have checked the download speed using http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/. I am at postcode SK237FN and have had consistently reliable download speeds for several years, 5-7Mbps.
    Please help!
I already tried rebooting my router but this has not improved matters.
    Thanks...

  • Suspected Malware slowing computer and Download speed?

I've done a little research and found out that certain malware on macs can be obtained through certain downloading sites. My computer is becoming slower and slower and download speed is being affected by something ( tested speed 2.3MB/s but the speed im getting is 40-100Kb/s ) both of which seem to be traits of malware or other viruses? Download speeds used to be higher and are still high other macs on the same connection. Ive tried downloading and running BitDeffender Virus Scanner and it found 4 problems, 2 of which where deleted, 1 quarantined and the last roams my computer free, but nothing improved anyway. Is my iMac infected, if so how to i remove the infection?
( its only 5 months old and is running 10.10.1 if that helps)

Please provide an EtreCheck report of your computer. However the first thing I will tell you is to uninstall (following the developers instructions) any antivirus, cleaning or other third party maintenance applications. Not only are these 100% useless some (most antivirus apps) tend to create more problems than they solve. There are zero viruses for OS X, however there is some malware out there that antivirus will not find. To avoid the small amount of malware out there takes just a small amount of common sense.
    Common sense primer!
NEVER download from a torrent! Next do not fall for any popups, ads, e-mails or phone calls that advise your computer has been compromised. These are SCAMS!!!!!!! Next is do not download anything from a site you do not 100% trust. That's it, it is that simple.
    Finally keep your Mac up-to-date!!!
