What difference do adding 'Plus Archivelogs' make to an open database backup

Hi,
Does adding the 'plus archivelogs' command to RMAN>backup database;
make any difference to the backup when the database is open ?
If the database is open, then RMAN>backup database; is having to include the archivelogs anyway to ensure the backupset pieces will have a consistent SCN and are not fuzzy.
So it seems to my mind that RMAN>backup database;
effectively implicitly adds 'plus archivelogs' anyway

Hi Jim,
As far as I understand , its not a compulsion to take archive log backups ( though highly recommended).
You may run into a situation where you just need the DB backup and while recovery you could use the archives already present without taking the rman backup.
For example in case of creating a DR standby database , you can use the rman backup from prod , ship it to the BCP location and thn simply restore using a standby controlfile. Post that start RFS process and it will bring the archives on its own.

Thanks for that. No I'm not unhappy with my 320 GB boot drive but was just wondering why so many seemed to be switching boot drives. I have a new 750 GB Samsung F1 (32 MB cache) which I have installed in my Mac Pro. If I made that my boot drive would I notice a difference in speed over my 320 GB drive? It would be a waste to ignore a possible speed gain if it could be easily achieved.
This often mentioned barefeats boot drive comparison http://www.barefeats.com/harper9.html makes no reference to the standard 320 GB drive which comes in the standard Mac Pro.

I am using 10.2.0.3. What is the difference between "backup database plus archivelog" and "backup database"?
I deleted the archive logs after disabling the archive log option. How to fix the below problem? thank you

Even if you've switched your database to NOARCHIVELOG mode, the ArchiveLogs that were generated earlier are still "known" as they are still cataloged in the control file (a query on V$ARCHIVED_LOG would show them).
As you are running NOARCHIVELOG, you really do not need to do BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
Your backup would be in MOUNT but not OPEN state so there would be no transactions.
If you really want to "clear" those older archivelogs so that RMAN doesn't attempt to backup them, you need to run these commands in RMAN :
Crosscheck Archivelog All;
Delete Expired ArchiveLog All;The first command will verify the controlfile records against the files actually present on disk and mark as "Expired" all those they do not exist on disk. The second command will "delete" them in that RMAN will no longer look for them.

What's the best way to make a bootable, incremental backup of Boot Camp?

I'm curious as to what's the best way to make a bootable and incremental backup of Boot Camp, similar to Time Machine? I'd essentially like it to replace System Restore as well, because that's currently not working for me (System Restore backups get deleted every time I restart).

System Restore gets backed up to what and where?
You need system image one way or another, and you want data and file backup.
Windows 8 takes File History feature is similar to TimeMachine but not for system.

Why do I have to convert t2i files to pro res in fcp x? What difference does it make ?

Just wondering why do I have to convert canon t2i files to prores in fcp x? What difference does it make ? I'm able to edit in fcpx the files that have just been imported diectly in. Does it cause any problems in export?

I am not familiar with Canon files.
I assume that they are like AVCHD which are really designed only as a delivery format and not for editing.
Though they can be edited it is concidered better to convert them to ProRes 422 for editing.
Though nothing terrible will probably happen if you don't convert them, you are likely to get improved results and faster rendering of complex effects with the converted media.
The best thing is to do 2 very short (sub - 5 minute) identical test projects adding lots of effects etc. with both methods and then you will be able to determine which technique suits you.

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

Shift+restore is to restore form an ispw file on your computer.
Control+restore to restore from backup.
Above for iTunes 10.7 or earllier or so I have read.

Adobe has a DPS add-on for InDesign (http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-publishing-suite-single.html) and it handles all the page transitions as well as swapping between portait and landscape. I think the way most people work is the pages are built in inDesign and regions of animation from EA are added second. But if every page had full screen animation, I suppose you may want to build your pages in Edge first.

Hi Liu,
I'm sure other people will coreect any errors I am about to make
(if I make any :-), but some time ago, Oracle mad a licensing
agreement with a company called IronFlare, regarding IronFlare's
application server product called OrionServer. After that, Oracle
came out with a new product -- Oracle Containers for Java (OC4J)
-- which is based on OrionServer. In the first version (that had
the version number 1.0.2.2), the application server basically came
bundled in the "orion.jar" file, so in order to start up the application
server, you used a command like:
java -jar orion.jar
However, the next version of OC4J (with version number 9.0.2.0.0
[go figure ;-]), contained the "oc4j.jar" file (which replaced
the "orion.jar" file).
So I would say that the first version of OC4J was almost identical
to OrionServer. But I think subsequent versions are becoming more
and more different. Remember that at the same time, OrionServer
is also still being developed. I think the first version of OC4J
was based on version 1.5.2 of OrionServer. The next version of
OrionServer (that should be released soon) is version 1.6.0.
I have no idea how similar the latest version of OrionServer is
to the latest version of OC4J. But if Oracle's history is any
guide, then I would say that, eventually, OC4J and OrionServer
will have very little similarity between them. Just look at the
paths that Oracle's JDeveloper has taken in comparison with Borland's
JBuilder. Originally, JDeveloper was based on JBuilder. Today,
they are two completely different products.

If you have a gift card balance, iTunes will use that.

I can't backup database plus archivelog

After deleting expired archivelogs, backup is working fine...

Error in recovery after BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG

With Oracle 9.2.0.6 on Unix Aix 5, I made:

Copy files from /base/tempora/% to another server in a directory with the same name.
Recreate the pfile and directory structure, and then

Original base seems to works fine (can be stoped and restarted).
I thought that this BACKUP DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG would contain in itself all the data needed to restart the database. Database has been stopped and restarted last week with no problem and I regularly do full backup with RMAN and TSM (we are testing now backups without TSM for a spacial case).
Has someone an idea of what's wrong?

When I try to do a set until sequence..., the RESTORE CONTROLFILE fails, telling it has nothing to restore. I think this is the same kind of problem I encounter with the full restore.
Aniway, the restore being good, i try to finish the recover and it fails, asking for a very old archive. Is it possible a transaction to be active after so much time?
In fact, I just decovered a file is in RECOVER status. I did an :
alter database datafile '...' offline drop;
since that, the recover is ok, from oracle (not rman):
recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;

What makes a jpeg open in ACR?

Working at a print lab we receive files from all kinds of sources. Some of the jpegs that we get seem to automatically open in ACR, some go straight into Ps when double clicked (PC). Does anybody know what makes an image open ACR? Even if I have the "prefer ACR" turned off in Ps, the file continues to open in ACR. The reason this is a problem is because the setting that the customer is making in ACR is not being saved/applied to the jpeg file. Customer submitted file, prints were too dark, customer increased brightness +20 in ACR and resubmitted the jpegs. But when we print they look just like the first batch. When I double click the file, it opens in ACR and I can see the +20 brightness but when printed its not there! Does anybody have any idea what could be happening? Is it the manner that the customer is saving the files out of ACR? Could it just be a bad action? Thanks for any feedback!

If a customer modifies a jpeg file within ACR and then clicks on either Done or Open, the changes are recorded as tags in the exif data of the jpeg file; no modifications are made to the jpeg image data. If you want to honor the customer's ACR edits you will have to open the jpeg file in ACR and Photoshop and either print from within Photoshop or save the file out of Photoshop. Photoshop is the only app that will honor the exif tag modifications.
Added by edit - The reason I reiterated the info is I predict this will happen more and more often as customers with a jpeg workflow "discover" how easy it is to change white balance, brightness, contrast, crop, etc. within ACR and never have to muck around in Photoshop. It's very easy just to click on "Done" when they're through editing, rather than go to the pain of saving it out as a new file. And Adobe hasn't done a wonderful job of explaining all the consequences, IMO.

What's the best way to make my Aperture library more manageable?

I'm running the latest version of Aperture. My photo library has become quite large and it takes a long time to load. Any advice or opinions on how to make the library more manageable would be appreciated before I go ahead and mess it all up. Obviously, I have a lot of photos there that I never view but I don't really want to simply delete them.

I have now disabled FACES, XML and previews. I'll test this shortly to see if it helps. I'm not sure what difference this will make to other apps.
That will be important, when you want access the APerture library from other applications using te Media Browser or when you want to sync your images to your deviced usin iTunes. For images, that you want to use in the Media Browser you will need previews, or for browsing your aperture library in quick Preview mode. You can craete previews indivudally, if you do need them only for selected images. If you want to use the Media Browser with third party applications, however, you will also need the XML. See:

Okay. I've closed Aperture and reopened it 4 times. It appears to go through this 'IMPORTING FROM iCloud November 2013' every time.
Either it takes a very long time, or there is an image or a video in your Photo Stream that cannot be imported, because it is incompatible or corrupted.
For iPhoto libraries it used to help, to remove the current "Importing" or "Auto Import" folder from the library package. Try, if this will help for your Aperture library.

If you cannot get the import to stop this way, post back, Then you have to delete the photos from your Photo Stream or reset the Photo Stream.
