What display to choose ? Glossy or matte ?

I am hesitating between a black MB with a 13" glossy screen and a more expensive MBP with a 15" matte display. I will use it mainly for seeing movies (DVD/AVI files), for navigating in the www and for receiving/writing emails.
What is the best display choice for this usage ?
Thank you.
Joao Antunes

I have a matte screen, and I love it.
What the guys at the Apple Store told me was:
Matte Screen
- not as crisp as glossy screen
- doesn't pick up background light
Glossy screen
- clearer screen, more detail
- picks up background light (not fun to use outside)
If you're going to watch movies on it, and you're not in a totally dark room, your glossy screen may reflect the background light, depending on how light it is. Personally, I can't stand screens that have glare, so I went with the matte screen. It's to bad that you can't have a MacBook with a matte display.
Hope this helps!

  • So what is the verdict glossy or matte display.

The macbook pro now comes in glossy or matte.
Which is better? has anyone seen both stlyes side by side?
I saw a macbook and I like pure sharp contrast of glossy but it has so much glare, that I think it might be better to stick with matte.
Is this something apple is testing out or do they plan on making all there screens glossy in future?
    Opinions?
    Dell 8300 Windows XP

Matte. It is a matter of opinion of course, but I really dislike the glossy screen. I come from the PC world and tried a number of them in various lighting situations at home and at work and found the reflections and glare to be very distracting and straining on the eyes. The matte screen was a major concideration in my decision to make the move to a Mac. I have spent a fair bit of time with the Mac glossy screens in the store (though I did not take one of these home) and I don't feel that Apple did anything vastly different with theirs.
As a photographer I would disagree that they are better for displaying photographs or anything else. It is a constant battle with glare, reflection and incremental color shifts when the screen is viewed slightly off center. Again it is a matter of personal preference and opinion. My opinion is I will never have one until they have vastly improved or the choice of matte is no longer an option. You may find you like them though. I can't speak for anyone but myself.

  • Same filesize no matter what bitrate I choose

    Hello everyone.
So, I just noticed this problem. It doesn't really matter what bitrate I choose (Only matters if I go below 70) I get almost the EXACT same file size and quilty.
    Here are my export settings.
I have a YouTube channel and I upload videos everyday so I want them to be in the best quality possible. This has always worked for until recently. If I export the same video with a bitrate of 300 and then again with a bitrate of 200, the filesize difference is usually about 1MB.
This is starting to annoy me a lot because if I check the videos bitrate after I've exported it, it is NOWHERE NEAR 300. For some reason it chooses to render at a bitrate of 76-80 no matter what.
Here is a picture of my timeline:
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CC on a Windows 7 PC.
    PC SPECS:
    GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 670 4GB
    CPU: Intel i7-3770k @3.5Ghz (Overlocked to 4.1Ghz)
    RAM: 16GB
    MB: GIGABYTE GA-Z77P-D3
If there is anything else I need to tell you that I might've missed, please tell me so!
I really need to get this fixed as my videos look nowhere near as good as they used to now.

Also, please stop telling me that the bitrate is too high or something, that's not the problem.
I get that. As I said, you have hit a wall of some kind. I am not sure that anyone ever tested about 70Mb/s. Maybe that is the wall that can't be climbed over.
Submit a bug report. Perhaps it will be an easy fix. Perhaps they already know about it and are just waiting for enough people to complain that it becomes worth spending engineering resources on it.
If you want to export at that high a rate, and the software seems to let you try it, the the software should actually do it. I agree.
Although at that bitrate you might as well export to a lossless codec. What is the point of a lossy codec at a bit rate higher than the original recording? It can't be quality because you can't get higher than 70 right now, so my guess is that you have never seen a quality improvement at 300. You can't get to 300. Not really.

  • No matter what tool I choose, all I get is a hand cursor

I recently installed Photoshop CS4 and didn't have any problems with the installation.  However, quite frequently the program gets into a mode where no matter what tool I choose all I get is a hand cursor.  I've tried logging off to correct the problem, but that doesn't work.  Rebooting the computer is normally sufficient.  I haven't determined any specific actions that always cause this circumstance to arise.  Does anyone have any ideas on what my problme might be?
BTW, I'm running on Windows XP Pro, 32-bit, with 3.5 GB of memory and a 2GHz dual-core cpu.
    Thanks.

This is my expereince as well.  I've never seen the problem in any other application and I've been using Photoshop for over 15 years, and this is the first version that I've encountered this problem.  And like you, when I switch to any other program the mouse and keyboard work just fine, so it is not a physical keyboard problem.
But, if hitting the space bar a few times solves the problem, then I'm happy for now.
    Thanks all.

    My PSE12
will only type CAPITAL letter no matter what font I choose.  Started doing this yesterday and I can't get back to having upper and lower case letters.

Perhaps you could reset the tools using this method:
    1) Launch PSE in Editor Mode
    2) click on the Expert Tab
    3) At the bottom right corner look for something like this :
This should solve the problem quickly.

  • Glossy or Matte? about to make the leap, need advice ...

I am about to finally make my much anticipated leap into the world of well, you know ...
The plan is to order a 17" MBP, 2.6GHz, 200GB 7200, enhanced rez, mostly for photoshop CS3 and graphics design, and the question is: glossy or matte?
All timely feedback greatly appreciated as I am ready to 'pull the trigger' on this and have it for the holidays, etc, etc.
    Thanks,
    pcg

I was in the same situation as you about one week ago
And although I won't be touching photoshop because I'm an audio guy, I found the glossy display to be much better +for me+
I went to my local Apple store and sat two MBP's side by side, one glossy and one matte.
Both of the laptops were on Apple.com and I scrolled around a bit on both and within 15 seconds I knew I wanted the glossy display. All text was much clearer and smooth looking than the matte imo.
I asked a genuis and he said that he owned a glossy MBP and it is easily cleanable. (he told me he usespledge wipes on it, not a bad idea.)
It was definetely right there where I was 100% sure what I wanted, went home and ordered it. (Not to mention we'll be having the same system specs.
...Needless to say, nice choice of configuration
Bottom line, I'd go to an apple store if one is close and do what I did, look at a few pictures online or something of the sort and see for yourself.
    Good luck.

  • Help!! glossy or matte?

yes its that question again i'm afraid.
i thought my mind was made up by reading what other people thought over the last few weeks, but today i saw a glossy and matte macbook pro side by side in the apple store, and the screen looked so much richer on the glossy!!
i work in graphic design, in quark, photoshop etc. i understand you can get some glare on the glossy, but are there any other downsides? are they less accurate? can this be counteracted with calibration?
i looked closely to see if the pixels were a bit blurred on the glossy or anything, and i can honestly say the only difference i could notice, even close up was that the matte looked so washed out in comparison.
i was all prepared to get a matte screen, but i really liked the vibrancy that the glossy had today, so pros and cons please, hopefully with a graphic design skew.
    thanks a lot guys
    N

The glossy display is coated in such a way that colours look brighter and more saturated. This is great for looking a photos and video. However, due to this colour skew colour representation is nowhere near as accurate as it is with a matte display.
Next to each other the matte display does look flatter. Just be aware that much of this can be negated by the way your set up your colour calibratrion. But again, doing this reduces your ability to colour match.
One thing that one needs to be careful with the glossy display is the lighting conditions. In situation where you have a high number of spot lighting or hardsh, point lighting then the glossy displays behave poorly due to their high reflectiveness. They work best in diffuse lighting with bright spots away from the rear and sides.
As for durability, I've not noticed that my glossy display scratches any easier than a matte display. While you may see an equivalent scratch more, the ease with which it gets this scratch is no worse.
if you are a grahpic designer and wants colour accuracy and consistency go for a matte display.

  • I spend lots of time staring at LP7...Glossy or Matte Screen??

Hey everybody. OK, I know this isn't exactly a LP7 forum issue so much as it is a MacBook forum issue bought thought it applies to all of us who are investing and have invested in the new intel technology provided by Apple.
Glossy or matte screen? That's what I'm trying to decide on and I know there are some opinions floating around this forum that I'd like to hear! I'm spending more and more time in front of my LP7 and want to know, as I am purchasing a new MacBook Pro, if the glossy screen would help, hinder or really make no difference to my working environment. It seems enticing and easy on the eyes and I'm planning on ordering the glossy but don't want to regret my decision because I'm already accustomed the the matte screen on my titanium.
    Any thoughts? Please share! Thanks

I had the same question but decided to go for the matte screen. The glossy screen is nice for photos, but the reflections get in the way. Whatever gains you get with the glossy screen in terms of color is not very relevant for Logic or audio software in general, isn't it?

  • What Display Gamma - 1.8 or 2.2?

    Hi,
I'd like to hear from all you guys using Aperture, what Display Gamma do you use on your Mac (in System Preferences > Displays > Color)? All Macs still seem to ship with the gamma set to 1.8, but a lot of people seem to suggest changing it to 2.2.

Except for WebKit-based browser (ie, Safari (Mac/Win), Omniweb, Shira) no current browser knows anything about CM and will ignore embedded profiles.
But, if the images are always viewed in CM-aware applications, the difference between gamma 1.8 and 2.2 does not really matter too much. It still have some effect, as will the brightness setting of the respective monitor and color temperature setting and even more the room lighting.
Calibrating your monitor and using CM-applications are the most important step, setting your gamma to 2.2, the temperature to 6500K (or even better native, which will be close to 6500K for LCDs), the brightness to ~120 cd are additional steps to standardize and optimize the viewing conditions. Having a neutral, rather dim room lighting is another important factor. Having a strongly colored wall in front of you, will noticeably shift your perception of colors.

  • Glossy or Matte Screen

What is the difference between Glossy and Matte screens?

The difference is that the new glossy screens have richer color than ever before; the problem is that you may never enjoy all that fancy new bright color. The glossy screen, in addition to enhancing the screen's vividness, also increses reflectivity. If you sit under or near a flourescent light, say in an office or classroom, the screen will show you a reflected image of that very flourescent light, which competes with the projected on-screen image.
To offset this problem, I recommend one of three things:
    (1) turn off the lights, if you can
    (2) spend an extra $700 on the Macbook Pro, and exercize your option to purchase a matte screen
    (3) buy the now obsolete iBook
I also recommend being vocal about your screen preferences. Perhaps the open minded folks at Apple will realize the folly of their ways. Its uncharacteristic of them to abandon one of the characteristics that distinguish Macs from PC's to the user's benefit. Shouldn't there at least be an option?

  • Is it possible to have a MBP 2011 converted from glossy to matte?

    Hi,
Bought a MBP earlier this year. Love the machine, but even after lots of comparing in the store, I think going with the glossy was a mistake. The glare is starting to get irritating, and photo editing is harder when you're seeing an enhanced image. Is it possible to have my screen changed by Apple?
    Thanks,
    David

No, Apple won't do it, but third party companies will, likely will void your warranty.
However you can go the route of expensive stick on aftermarket anti-glare films, get a few and keep them in a good spot, your'll be replacing them as they dry out, peal and bubble.
Google search for your model and anti-glare films.

Sorry I couldn't reach you sooner, I advise everyone to get a anti-glare laptop.

    Hi,
these are the original specs. your T40 left the factory with:
    ThinkPad T40 (2374-BG9)
    Based on 2374-8CU: P M 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD(slim), Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), Wireless upgradeable, Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 6 cell battery, WinXP Pro
"Wireless upgradeable" usually means that your T40 did not leave the factory with a wireless card installed. However, I.B.M. used this marketing term to indicate the model has the wireless antennae installed in the lid of the LCD assembly and can easily have a mini-PCI wireless card added. I have opened up dozens of T40's (including, I believe, some listed as "wireless upgradeable") and I have never found one which did not have an internal wireless card installed. It seems most of these units were upgraded with a wireless card at some point in their history. I also have a theory that many of these "wireless upgradeable" units were purchased in bulk and had mass installations of wireless cards by a secondary party/ technicians before being sold on the final retail market. That's just a theory of mine.
The T40's came with the following three wireless 'B' cards:
ThinkPad Dual-Band 11a/b Wi-Fi Wireless Mini PCI Adapter
    Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b
Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter
These are the official names designated in System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. These were all wireless 'B' adapters, but T40 can easily be upgraded to some of the wireless 'G' cards you see listed for the T42.
There is only one way to know for sure which (if any) wireless card your T40 has. You will have to remove the keyboard and take a look under the hood. Follow the steps in the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. Then we can help you locate the appropriate drivers.
Here are some movies with step-by-step instructions which can help you and others who may be reading:

As for audio, make sure you are first updated to Service Pack 3. Allow Windows to do other preliminary updates and it should then inform you that Service Pack 3 is ready for download. After installing SP3, you will be able to install audio drivers successfully. See my post here for a few additional hints: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T60-no-sound-after-reinstalling-XP-sp2/m...
If Windows updates is taking forever to give you the option to install SP3, here is an official Microsoft link where you can directly download SP3. (Many people don't know about this link :http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24). Just keep in mind, however, that you should have a stable XP SP2 setup before installing SP3 as it makes many registry changes and configurations and can lead to blue screens or cause your system to hang upon reboot if not installed properly. (I am speaking from experience LOL ). Also, make sure you have a stable hard drive before installing SP3 as it gives your hard drive a major workout. If your hard drive is corrupted or has just a few KB of bad sectors, this can lead to your system hanging when you try to restart after installation. SP3 will write important data to bad sections of the hard drive, then fail to re-start successfully and it will be a big headache. Therefore, you should run Chkdsk several times to attempt to close off any bad drive sectors before attempting to install SP3. SP2 is quite merciful and installs in a breeze, but SP3 can be treacherous. I mention this because you told us above that your hard drive has previously crashed.
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • What direction to choose after getting ocp

    Hello, guys
I am thinking about next step in my education. What course to choose among Oracle products?
I have OCP 11g already and had course in performance tuning.
Can someone give me advice what Oracle product to learn next? I must say that our organization's budget is limited, so I can choose any of 1 week Oracle courses.
I consider Oracle RAC (however, its not used widely in our country), WebLogic, Application server or SOA Suite.
The main criterias are a product's popularity and it should have perspective for the next several years
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

You are lucky that your organization is paying for courses !
If you want to continue being a database administrator, RAC would be the direction (the 11gR2 Accelerated Grid and RAC course is the most expensive course I've seen).  However, if you are also supporting other products -- e.g. WebLogic is popular -- you'd do a course in that product.  If you perceive being an EBusiness Suite administrator, you'd consider a course in EBusiness Suite or Fusion Applications administration.

what display settings do i need to change to what tv and display my macbook pro with hdmi cable connected to computer.

Well, if it's 1080p TV, then go into System Preferences > Displays.
Sometimes you have to click on detect displays & a PreferencePane should appear on each display device for you to change the resolution.
Also decide if you want it mirrored, or extended. And also move the display to the correct position for extended so you are moving the mouse in the direction of the 2nd display being the TV.
Option + F1 = Brings Display preferences up immediately.
Command + F1 or F2 = from memory that's the shortcut to switch back & forth between mirroring & extended.
