What do I do about "not genuine" Windows?

Moved for better exposure.

What laptop model? What operating system is currently installed on the laptop? Did you buy the laptop new?  Where did you buy the laptop? What OS was pre-installed at the factory? Have you tried to use the Acer recovery software to reset your computer to factory condition? Have you made any hardware changes to the laptop such as cpu, HDD, or motherboard?

  • No updates installed, error 80004002, not Genuine Windows

About a month ago WU started reinstalling 5 or so updates over and over. I have tried all the suggestions in these forums with no luck. As near as I can tell no one else was ever able to recover from this problem.
After one of the many reboots from trying the various attempts to fix including downloading and running the "windowsupdateagent30-64.exe", "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab", and "MicrosoftFixit.wu.RNP.1346062406214304.3.1.Run.exe"
my firewall wanted permission to let WGA run and of course I did since I have had this computer for more than a year and know it is "Genuine Windows". So now I have the added problem of win7 telling me I do not have "Genuine Windows".
I was at the point of attempting to try the inplace upgrade but I am afraid it will still think this is not "Genuine Windows"
Please help. How can I get rid of this not Genuine Windows.

Post your issue to the Windows 7 Genuine Issues forum.  Here are the instructions on how to produce a diagnostic:
    MGA
    Diagnostic Report:
To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop -http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.
    One
    Issue Per Thread:
Most Activation and Validation issues look the same, on the surface, but can have many different causes and fixes. This is why we ask for a diagnostic report and this is also why we ask that you create your own thread for your issue (in other words,
don't post your issue in another person's thread).
It just becomes too complicated to try to troubleshoot multiple different issues in the same thread.

  • I cant recover my computer to normal factory settings because of not genuine windows 7

    2. not genuine windows 7... before that windows vista
    4. i downloaded windows 7.
    5. i cant restore back to windows vista, my recovery disk is empty but it says its full. it laggs to much and i think it fryed my video card

Here are the specs for your Compaq Presario CQ60-211DX Notebook Computer. According to the specs your system shipped with Windows Vista Home Basic SP1. HP states in its Upgrading to Windows 7 FAQs, that you should create a set of HP system recovery discs before upgrading the OS. If a problem occurs during the upgrade process, you can use the recovery discs to return your computer back to its original software configuration. Your recovery disk (partition) is most likely near full but the folders and files are hidden. It is likely that the link to the recovery partition was removed from your system during the upgrade to Windows 7. This HP Recovery Manager Installer Patch may help, if you did an upgrade and not a custom or clean install.
Did you create a set of HP Recovery Discs??? If not, you will need to order a set from HP.
Did you purchase a Genuine Windows 7 installation disc with COA and product key??? If not, you will need to purchase a Genuine copy of Windows 7 from Microsoft or a retailer.

  • Not Genuine Windows

Hi guys! I know someone else has had this, though I couldn't find it on the boards. About a month ago my computer started turning my screen saver into a black screen. The main problem is I'm getting this ""This copy of windows in not geniune"", and ''you may be a victim of counterfit software''' and to resolve now.  Problem is, everything I run says I am using Genuine Windows, which I knew. This is very irritating. I want to upgrade to Windows 10 when I get it, but I can't do that. When this first started I reset the system back to original condition (recovery disk).  I have a feeling this is something to do with the HP Support Assistant for some reason.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello , Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I read your post about the black screen, and wanted to assist you! Please have a look at the following resource, as it may help to resolve the issue for you:How to fix This Copy of Windows is not genuine on Windows 7, 100% working (Not a HP supported Web site). Please let me know if this information was helpful by clicking the thumbs up below.

  • What's that message about not being able to do automatic downloads if I download purchased music from an old account?

I wanted to download music to my iPad from an old iTunes account so I logged of my current account and logged in with the old one. I went to the purchased section and hit download on a song and when I did, I received a warning that my iPad was linked to another account (my new account) and that if I downloaded the files I wouldn't be able to do automatic downloads for 90 days.
I don't quite understand what that is about.
Can anybody tell me what will actually happen if I DO download music from my old iTunes account and then switch back to my new account?
How else can I download all my old purchases without affecting my new account?
What does that warning actually mean?
I don't have a computer so that rules out uploading from a PC or Mac.
    Thanks a lot!

Well I tried your suggestion in the Permissions screen for Components There isn't an Owner Tab.  I made the suggested changes but I still got the error.
    The Owner data is:
So what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

  • Re: "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message

Hello, this morning the following message appeared as my wallpaper:
    "Windows 7
    Build 7600
This copy of Windows is not genuine"
Windows came pre-installed on my laptop (i.e. is genuine).
I searched Microsoft, their solution is to run rsop.msc - when I try to do this, I am given the message 'Windows cannot find 'rsop.msc''.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
Toshiba preinstalled image is already activated and does not need to be activated again
Also the serial key at the bottom of the unit will not help you. It belongs to the image (OEM version) which is already installed and activated

  • Windows 7 Product Key Blocked - Not Genuine notice

My T420 is 3 years old and suddenly yesterday I got the notices and black screen saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine." And nag screens about it roughly every half hour (and annoyingly at boot-up).
I tried several fixes online, including re-entering the Product Key. When I do that I get error code 0XC004F063. There's no place to contact Microsoft for a replacement key, it says to contact Lenovo.
I talked to Lenovo support this morning and was told I may need to reinstall Windows and they were mailing me Restore discs. He checked and said with that error code I needed to call Microsoft.
I called MS and they checked the Product Key...it's blocked. I gave him my Product ID and that's blocked too. He said get back to Lenovo.
Lenovo knows nothing about this. Or what to do about it. The woman told me she had someone call this morning with something similar, though it was with Windows 8. She checked and several other support people had had similar calls this morning. She also said I'd probably have to reinstall Windows. I asked if she'd ever had this before and she said no. I asked if she knew of others having these calls before and she said not that she knew of. I asked if it seemed suspicious that suddenly a few people were having this problem. Sounds like Lenovo blocked a series of Product Keys. She hedged about whether it was truly escalated and said the Floor Manager was aware of it and they'd look into it. When I asked if they'd contact me if they found out anything, she said it doesn't work that way. They're mailing me the Restore discs and I'm to call back Friday to see if anyone knows anything.
In the meantime, here's my MS Genuine log. It looks okay to my untrained eye....anyone have any insights or know of other instances of this, especially in the past 24 hours?

  • "This copy of windows is not genuine.Build 7601". G71-333CA Notebook PC

    Hi,
Few days ago I got the blue screen and after reboot I got the message ""This copy of windows is not genuine.Build 7601". Error code 0x8007007E.
I tried to restore the system to a previous state but it didn't work.
Now, after rebooting I log in and all I get is a black screen with a small text in the right low corner as mentioned. No other command works.
How can I recover the system without reinstalling windows?
    Product number: VM115UA#ABC, G71-333CA, Windows 7
    Thank you,

What is the difference between a purchased recovery disk and the ones that I created?
I don't understand why HP installs a different key than the label one. Why bother to place a label with a product key that is not real? I would have knew about all this twist I would have bought a proper Windows licence (at least I would have had the installation kit) and laptop without all the HP useless applications (which proves that if you are in trouble they cannot help at all).
    Thank again,
    Dan
    1. Recovery discs from HP perform the same recovery but take longer to do the recovery than the one's you make yourself.
"HP shipped media covers multiple series and many different configurations. (One set of discs may cover a series that has 10 or even many more unique configurations)
Because of this the process first lays down a 'base' image, and then customizes the image for that specific configuration.
The F11 and customer created media recoveries are specific to that model PC, and are quick because it is laying down an image that is designed only for one configuration.
The last phase of the HP shipped recovery  is installing and customizing the software for that specific model. This last phase can take a very long time, can have popup windows (that should not be clicked), and can involve multiple reboots. Specifically around 12%-19% on the display is where this occurs.
Please don't interact with the PC during this time.
Don't click on any popups unless the system completely stops for significant time.Unless there is a unknown error, the recovery process is actually designed to handle this.
For notebooks, this process can take 4-6 hours on certain configurations."
    2. All OEM PC manufacturers use what is called a Volume License Key (VLK), it makes it much easier to install and activate 10's of millions of Windows installations. By Law they have to give your a Single User License key because you paid for the OS when you purchased the PC, so they put that key on the sticker, this is an Industry wide standard.

  • "Build 6002: This copy of Windows is not genuine"

    Hi everyone..
I have had my TOSHIBA Satellite L40-139 for over a year. It was bought from PC World and came with a pre-installed version of Windows Vista Home Premium. I do not have any of the disks that came with the laptop but the Windows installed is genuine.
I went to install Vista Service Pack 2 having downloaded it. I restarted my laptop only to find my desktop wallpaper had gone and been replaced with a black background and the following in the bottom-right corner of the desktop:
    Windows Vista (TM)
    Build 6002
This copy of Windows is not genuine
This was followed by a pop-up window with two options, 'Activate Now' or 'Activate Later', followed by an error pop-up that says Windows must be re-installed as an "Unauthorised change has been made...please insert CD or DVD". If I press 'Activate Now' it just goes to another pop-up that says I can contact TOSHIBA. If I click the link it just goes to a standard 'Help' screen!
I don't know what to do..I have the COA product key sticker intact and have tried entering it but it just comes back with various errors. It's as if as soon as I installed service pack 2 I've had problems. Again I do not have Vista or a toshiba recovery disk (I don't even know if it came with one). I have tried restoring Windows but it just returns with the same screens!
    HELP!!
PS. Is the Toshiba support line a free number? Does anyone know a number that is free to call from mobiles? (I do not have a landline).

    > As per my first post I do not have a Recovery DVD as mine didn't come with one..I take it I must be doing something wrong and there is another way to sort this? Even the Toshiba product spec states that no recovery DVD comes with it.
As per my first posting I wrote clearly that new notebooks dont come with recovery discs but with HDD recovery only and you must create recovery disc alone. Everything is described in Users manuals document. If you dont read it and dont pick up info about your notebook I cannot help you about it.
If you cannot start HDD recovery installation as described in Toshiba document then something must be screwed up. Why? I dont know.
You can try method posted by Paolo but if this will not help you must install OS again or activate preinstalled version. If you dont have possibility to install original recovery image you can order new disc under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx or try to clarify situation with nearest Toshiba service. Call them, explain the situation and maybe you will get one for free.
Sorry but I dont know what else to say.

  • Shutdown while browsing and get errors 0x80000ffff,0x800700b7,Windows 7 build 7601 not genuine, etc

I can't get this HP Compaq PresarioCQ60 2CE927T6QQ to work. It shuts down, it won't start up past the login unless you wait hours and it slow and shutdown and bring me back to the login. I'm currently using it in safe mode. I've tried system restore about 4x and start-up repair about 2x. I've tried removing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Schedule\TaskCache. And about to try other things!
I first got errors 0x80000ffff and 0x800700b7 withe the system restore failures. Then The Audio Service is not running and also found elsewhere that Windows Service not running and failed. Now I have Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not Genuine. Arghhhh! What caused this torture? How can I fix it without cost? I'm going to keep trying stuff until I get help.

    Hi,
For Windows licensing issue,  we 'd better seek help with the Local Microsoft license support team.
In addition,  we could take a try to ask in the following forum:

  • Windows not genuine, after a while.

    Hi,
We are a local pc repair service, and after we reinstall Windows 7 (or Vista, not XP) Windows Activates just fine (trough OEM License, that did come with that PC or notebook)
But after a month or so, Windows will start up and says: This copy of Windows is not genuine.
    So we have to reactivate.
Anyway to prevent this from happening?
    Regards

Hi have had this computer with windows seven for 4 years now and it just now is telling me that I may not have a genuine system. I suspected the problem since I could not download an update from about 3 months ago. Then about 4 weeks ago my system said
it could not find the serial number. Is this a virus? I have seen the price for windows genuine and I want to be sure before I spend money on something that I may not need.

  • Windows 7 Enterprise is not genuine after installing new hard-drive and cloning the old one

I retired from my job as a university professor two years ago, and they let me keep my laptop computer, which is a Dell Latitude E4300 with Windows 7 Enterprise installed. I do not have any of the original disks for Windows. Recently, the hard-drive began
to fail, so I replaced it with a new one, cloning the old hard-drive onto the new one. Soon after that, a popup window began appearing saying that this computer is not running genuine windows. One important consequence of this is that I can no longer use Windows
Update, so I have concerns about security. If I go to the control panel under “System”, it says windows is activated and gives me the Product ID. I have talked to tech support at Microsoft, and they tell me something along the lines of the following: that
the problem is the new hard-drive is not recognized as being licensed to use this copy of Windows, and that I should post a question on one of the forums asking this: How can I reinstall Windows 7 Enterprise on the new hard-drive? Any assistance will be much
    appreciated.
PS I have no idea which forum this should go under, so pretty much just picked one randomly.

Thank you for the reply. Below is the diagnostic report:

PLEASE anyone help? I am not a techie person and i dont know how to fix this problem. Thank you and regards.

Now, this is pretty complicated for me to understand but one thing is just clear, this is counterfeit. I have asked help from other Windows7 forums and all they tell me is to report this to Microsoft.
MANY people have counterfeit installs - very few of them actually know it! And im one of them.
A large proprtion of counterfeiting is done b vendors who can make a quick buck by buying/building OS-free machines, and installing 'Ultimate' to unsuspecting purchasers.
Another thing is that I cannot see any COA sticker anywhere my unit.
I used a keyfinder softwareto find my product key but it's not valid for activation since the key used in here is a Default Key. is is getting worst.
I am not very good with this technology stuff and im getting really frustrated.
Is it possible that if i upgrade my system to Windows 8, and use a legal purchase, will i be able to get rid of this "Windows 7 Build 7601 this copy of Windows is not genuine." thing???????
    Please help. Thank you.

  • My HP computer saying my Windows 7 copy is not genuine

I have HP TouchSmart 610 desktop pc Windows 7 SP 1 and my windows OS was activated 2 years ago without any probem.
Several days ago a pop up alert started showing up saying "this computer isn't running genuine Windows."
An option exists to "resolve online now."
After clicking on that a message comes up saying "validation process cannot continue because your web browser may not be configured to run the required script." To continue with validation please do the following:
    1. Click "Validate now" to run the alternate validation process [optimized for browsers unable to run original validation script.]
    2. When prompted click Save, or run this program from its original location.
When I click "Validate now" the message says "What do you want to do with legitcheck.hta?"
    size: 2.56KB  from: www.microsoft.com
So  I choose run this file and after open window from Microsoft - Install genuine Windows with this information -
Files that Windows needs to work properly have been modified, removed, or disabled. To resolve, you need to install genuine Windows.
I called today Microsoft Activation Center and Support - I give them COA code - They said that my OS windows 7 home  - is OEM version - so I need to contact HP support with this problem.
I check Start/Computer/Properties/Windows Activation - and there is - Windows is Activated
I also clean up my pc using instruction from bleepingcomputer.com so there are no any viruses and my pc is clean.
    Please help
    John

This has been known to happen for some unknown reason and sometimes resolves itself after a couple of boots.
    Tryrecreating the Licensing Store.
    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sitcker on eht machine's case
Please mark my post as SOLVED if it has resolved your problem. It helps others with similar situations.
