Hello, I hope by now you have resolved the upgrade issue, but if not, here is what I ended up having to do:
“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”
Here is my original post explaining what I had already tried:
“Hi all,
I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.
Can anyone help? Please?!
Thank you!!!
P.S. We have a PC, with Windows XP Home.”
Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!

P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution.

  • I got this message after trying to download a movie: an unknown error occured (-50). please check that the connection to the network is active and try again. I'm pretty sure that my internet is connected, especially since I downloaded a song before that.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure my internet is connected as I just downloaded a song right before I tried to download the movie. The extras for the movie downloaded by the way, but not the actual movie. Any ideas?

Perhaps try the "Error -50," "-5000," "8003," "8008," or "-42023" section in the Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) section of the following document:

  • IOS 5 on 3Gs iPhone,There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone

I have attemepted to update my iPhone 3Gs 8-10 times now over the past three days and keep getting the following error message:
There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone " My iPhone". The network connection timed out.
Make sure your network settings asre correct and your netowrk connections are active, or try again later.
This is after i wait 45-60min for iOS 5 to download each time.

    Hi,
I am having the same problem as eimaj311 - and I dont have Kaspersky. I would like to believe that the error is not even related to network speed. I understand there would be a high demand on the servers - but this would have been anticipated and addressed - if so why the error message. I think downloading 700Mb would have been easier if iTunes can save whatever was downloaded and resume from that point in the event an error occurs.
In the mean time I am doomed - looks like the timeout error messages are there to stay.

    Hey GaryScar,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with connecting to the iTunes Store. The following articles may help to resolve your issue:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
    "Error 3000" through "3999"
Alerts with codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, or due to your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try removing the proxy settings, or using a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

    Hi,

The last time I got the following message: "Unknown error occured (1604).
I am then told to re-install again and the above errors occur again. It this like a never ending loop.

    Thanks in advance.

No, you shouldn't lose the stuff on your ipod. If you have synced your ipod recently, itunes would have made a backup file of all of your settings and files on the ipod. This is used when you restore.
Plug your ipod in and the screen that pops up in itunes will have a button to "restore". This will wipe everything off the ipod, reinstall the firmware and then reload all of your stuff. itunes will use the most recent backup file to reload everything. about halfway through the process, itunes will ask you if you want to restore as a new ipod or use a backup... choose the backup.
Be patient, it takes a while, but when it's done your ipod should be good as new.

  • There was a problem downloading...

    Hi,
    I am having an extremely frustrating issue where I am unable to download any podcasts from either MSNBC or NBC. I recently moved over to a mac an all other podcasts are updating as usual however any NBC/MSNBC podcasts that I am subscribed to can not be downloaded. I receive the following message;
There was a problem downloading ... An internal server error occurred. Please check that the URL is correct and the connection to the network is active and try again.
    Help...

I have had similar problems and using Store>Check for Purchases does not fix the problem as it says I am only allowed to download purchases once.
I have also attempted to contact Apple regarding this issue but their phone support stone walled me. I was told that I must use the online form to submit problems but whenever I try to use the form I get a mailer daemon error from their end returning my e-mail.
Any help is welcome regarding this issue as I've lost an album and I can't download one song to another album.

  • I have been trying to update to iOS 5 and every time I hit update it says, " There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. The network connection could not be established."  What do I need to do to update to solve this problem?

I have been trying to update my iPhone 4 with iOS 5 for about 30 minutes and I keep getting the same thing. It says,"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. The network connection could not be established." What do I need to do to solve this problem?

iOS: Resolving update and restore alert messages
For error -50: See error 13 and 14:
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
