What do I do if I have received a phishing email from HMRC?

I have received a phishing email from HMRC which I opened. I then deleted it.  Do I need to do anything to remove any potential threat?

No but if that happans again, "forward" the email to Apple at this address:   [email protected]
Apple wlll never send you an email asking you to verify your Apple ID.

I received a phishing email from what I thought was my bank.  Do I need to do anything to my MAC for security? I have no anti-virus software.

Evelyn, there is nothing that can prevent you or anyone from falling victim to those attempts to defraud you – other than you.
"Phishing" scams are the most common way of getting people to voluntarily supply information that should be kept as secure as any other personal possession. "Anti-virus" solutions can't possibly prevent that sort of fraud, and if anything can only lull you into falsely believing you're being protected from threats, be they real or perceived.
Do you have any further advice so that I don't fear my Mac?
There is no reason to fear your Mac; it's a tool to be used for your sole benefit. Like any tool though, it can be misused. If there is any explanation for fear, it's a lack of education. Knowledge conquers fear and renders it inert. Learn what real threats actually exist, how to defend yourself from them, and how to distinguish them from those propagated by fear mongering psychopaths that justify their existence by keeping others misinformed. There are an abundance of the latter.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it. The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

The thing was, when I clicked on the login thing, it took me to another site and I instantly shut the server down before anything happened. Is this a real email or is it a fake? Has anyone else had this? I have already updated from one to the other so I don't know why I am receiving this.

As long as you didn't enter your iCloud username and password on the site the link took you too, you will be ok.
If you did, change your password immediately, and be vigilant for any suspicious activity in your account.

cannot receive or send email from my hotmail account, refuses to verify server. I have changed my password, deleted the account numerous times, any solutions? all on ios 6. it was working up until a few days ago and now refuses to load on both my ipad 2 and iphone 4S
in the process deleted all my contact, very annoying.
    all help is much appreciated.
interesting that my gmail account does work perfectly.

this may or may not help - but give it a try.  On a forum some were reporting that talk21 is now under the yahoo umbrella.  below are the steps this use listed.  (This was an android forum, but the email settings should be the same.  In short it looks like their server names have changed.  An existing account may have simply been forwarded - but if you are reinstalling, it may want a clean install to the right servers.)  Pay particular attention to the server names and port settings.  (this thread was started based on a discussion of Imap vs pop - you are already an Imap person - so ignore that part)
    See if this helps.
why settle for pop3, when IMAP works with talk21 and not only does mail get pushed out faster with IMAP, but when you click refresh it will be received faster than pop3.  The other advantage is subfolders are also supported with IMAP but cant be seen with POP3. This mail feature works with my android eclair & hero phone and the settings are exactly the same for win mobiles also (not tested). The mail setting up roadmap is the same from what i can remember once in the mail feature for win mobi.
This is what you need to do to setup Talk21 email with IMAP.
    Incoming server settings
    IMAP server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 143
    Security type - none
    Outgoing Server settings
    SMTP server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Port - 25
Security type - none Also important note - Enable 'require sign-in'
and enter your talk21 username and password The End...works a treat for me p.s. Its only taken me 3 years to work it out with win mobile and recently with android. Finally got it to work...hope this helps all the talk21 users out there. if there are any other similar posts out there with no answer...dont forget to mention my name when passing this post around.

  • I have received a spamming complaint from my email server - help?

I have received a spamming complaint from my email server that I was not aware was happening.  They want me to clean my computer, what do I do first?

There are a few trojan horse programs that can infect a Mac, but none found in the wild send out spam messages, so those aren't a concern for your current situation, and if you stay current with your updates to Mac OS X, Apple's blocked most of those trojans that do exist (there's a new update just today, I believe, for one discovered recently). Overall I don't see much need for antivirus utilities as long as you exercise common sense and caution in what you download from the web. Those trojans all depend on unsuspecting users downloading fake software from unsecure sites. Download only from sites you can trust - the software developer for applications - and don't open attachments you aren't expecting - and you should be fine. If you do feel the need for some sort of scanning, the freeware ClamXav should be sufficient.

Trouble opening pdf's - I have received several pdf's from a friend via e-mail (Thunderbird). Some of them open just fine but others give me the message: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." My friend made sure that the files in question opened without issue on his computer (a PC). Further, I was able to open one of these "damaged" files on my Android phone, but I cannot open them on the Macbook Air. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

When I trash e-mails I have received on the iPad from Outlook, are the e-mails also deleted from the Outlook server at the same time?

    Hello falconrig,
It sounds like you have some questions about how your email account stores your information. This article has some information about different email account types and how they work:
    Mail (Mavericks): About email accounts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14873
    IMAP accounts
With IMAP accounts, incoming and outgoing messages are stored on a mail server until you delete them. When your account connects to the server, it’s synced so that the messages on your Mac are the same as those on the server. You can read and manage messages from any device that you use to access your account, and download messages or attachments to work with when you’re not connected to the Internet.
    Microsoft Exchange accounts
These accounts are similar to IMAP accounts, in that messages are stored on a mail server and accessible from different computers and locations. You can use flags in an Exchange account with some limitations.
For an Exchange account to be set up in Mail, the Exchange server must support Exchange Web Services (EWS). Contact your server administrator for more information.
    POP accounts
With POP accounts, incoming messages are stored on a mail server and are downloaded to your Mac when you access your account. The messages remain on the server until they’re deleted from the server.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I cannot receive a verification email from icloud on my comcast email account.  I have tried looking in spam, going to appleid and asking to resend the verification email many times, and I get nothing.  Any suggestions? Thanks.

Most likely it is blocked on server level, you need to go to account settings and unblock everything that has word apple in it. Also just to make sure, verify that you didn't misspell your e-mail address.

I received a phishing email supposedly from my bank and clicked on url - didn't enter any data though.Bank says to get ipad checked for viruses, but I understood ipad has built in security.I've cleared cookies in safari via settings.  Anything else to do?

I know this has been solved as you reported, but I think you need to check with your e-mail provider. Did you also get this same e-mail on your computer? If you use the same ID for e-mail on computer and ipad, it should have appeared on both. It's very common spam. Check your computer to see if on it, the e-mail is in spam, or, if you deleted it on your ipad, check your recently deleted e-mails.
You might want to consider changing your password, though people sending spam, don't need it. My e-mail provider had me change my password, not because I was getting spam, but unknown to me, I was sending it!  (You'll still get some spam, though.) It's when you learn that you're unknowingly sending spam...that you must change your password.
    Hope this helps.
(Ss I was sending this, I just got an e-mail notification from the Nigerian... it got to my e-mail instead of going to spam.)

What you are describing sounds like you created a new apple id with your new comcast email address. There may be apps on your ipad that are associated with another id that was using your verizon email address. If thats what you're saying then those apps need to be updating by using the apple id that was used when they were downloaded.
If you're talking about something else then maybe a lttle clarification is necessary.
Go to settings/itunes and app stores. make sure the correct apple is shown.
Go to settings/mail, contacts and calendars. Makes sure all of the accounts are current.
Go to settings/icloud, facetime and messages, verify the same.
